some of us felt the shaking in our nbc bay area newsroom. stronger jolts were felt by a few producers in the gilroy area. rob mayeda joins us with more on the intensity of this afternoon's quake. rob? >>> at 4.5, that is enough to get your attention in terms of magnitude. the area in green is light to moderate shaking closer to hollister, the epicenter, we did get reports felt up to marin county, san francisco to the east bay, and a bit further out even to fresno. really the focus of the more intense shaking down closer to the hollister area. as of 4.5, that's on the lower threshold of something that could potentially cause damage. 5.0 and larger you would expect to see some of that. noticeable shaking and, again, as it did occur about six miles deep relatively shallow but, again, farther away from downtown hollister, and you see the red lines on the map. here are the fault lines in the vicinity, the san andreas fault and also the calaveras fault. as usgs continues to go over their data as it continues to come in, will figure out which fault

this is "nbc bay area news tonight." i'm raj mathai. we're going to get to all those stories in just a few minutes. but we want to start with some breaking news. a confrontation at a walnut creek high school. here's what we know. a stabbing this afternoon at northgate high. the superintendent there says a freshman is in custody, and another student is being treated at a nearby hospital. police aren't saying what they think led to the stabbing, but they did say the two students that are involved were acquaintances. other students tell us the victim is a ninth grade girl, and the suspect is a boy. the suspected attacker is now being held on attempted murder charges. an nbc source telling us the girl was stabbed in the neck. >> i was super shocked to hear that a stabbing happened at northgate because i've never heard of anything like that happening at our school district. >> i mean it's crazy. it's going on everywhere, and, you know, what is wrong with people? you know, i just don't get it. there's guns everywhere. there's mass shootings.
