right now at 5:00, a fight in the east bay leads to a deadly shooting at an illegal hookah bar. what we're learning about the property and the county's attempts to shut the business down. we are following breaking

news on the peninsula. a wrong-way crash has left a driver dead. we're live with the latest. the news at 5:00 starts now. thanks for joining us. >> we want to begin with that breaking news, a woman is dead after a wrong way driver crashed into her car. happened on southbound 280 south of 92 not far from the woodside road exit. >> that's where mary ann favaro joins us live. you've been talking to the chp, what do you know? >> reporter: this was absolutely a horrific crash that left a woman in her 40s dead. we've also learned that there was a 14-year-old boy in her car, as well, and he suffered major injuries and has been taken to the hospital. chp officers are still investigating this crash of the wrong-way driver. this is what we know so far -- that white ford that you see behind me, it was traveling the wrong way northbound on the

southbound lanes according to chp officers. it crashed into a black bmw that was traveling southbound, killing the driver, a woman in her 40s. a 14-year-old boy also suffered major injuries, and as i mentioned was taken to stanford hospital. we do not know if that was her son. the driver of the white ford was arrested and transported to stanford with some injuries, we don't know yet the extent of his injuries. right now chp officers say it is unknown whether the driver of that white ford was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. now in an unrelated note, we have learned from the chp that shortly after this crash they did receive a few calls saying that a naked man got out of a white vehicle in this same area and started running on the highway. now, chp officers tell us that

they are investigating those calls. they can can confirm they did come in, and as you might imagine most of the lanes here are closed. there are still a few that are open, but traffic is backed up for miles. you're best to avoid this area right now. again, a woman in her 40s was killed. a 14-year-old boy suffered major injuries in this wrong-way fatal crash. reporting live at highway 280, marianne favaro, nbc bay area news. >> absolute tragedy. thank you very much. another deadly wrong-way crash overnight. this one in the north bay. the chp expects alcohol involved. it happened around 3:30 morning southbound 101 in san rafael near the 580 off-ramp. chp says a nissan pickup truck was driving north in the southbound lanes and crashed head on to a bmw. the nissan driver died.

the other driver taken to the hospital. chp says it appears the nissan driver was intoxicated. another headline tonight, a deadly early morning shooting at an illegal hookah lounge in east bay. >> it started as a fight inside the unlicensed business, ended with a parking lot gun battle. nbc bay area's tom jensen reports from hayward. >> reporter: the alameda sheriff's department tells us at least two men began arguing inside the hookah lounge that was operating without a license. and once they took it outside into the parking lot, they started firing guns at each other. two people were killed, and two others injured in the early morning gunfight that broke at around 1:30 in the parking lot of a hookah lounge in hayward in the 21000 block of mission boulevard. the sheriff's department is not releasing the identities of the victims. neighbors say they've seen police here before but never heard birthday to before last night want -- heard gunfire before last night. >> it's scary because i got kids. >> reporter: theishy family lives less than a quarter mile from the business. >> i do see a lot of police

activity there, and it's always between 2:00 and 3:00 in the morning. >> that's unfortunately what happens nowadays. you know what i mean? people don't get out and fight anymore, it's gunshots. you know, it's unfortunate the two people passed away. >> reporter: a sheriff's department spokesperson says something like this was bound to happen at the business that was ordered to close due to a lack of licenses and permits but continued to operate. >> our crime prevention and our crime reduction units has been out here a number of times over the past two years. >> reporter: the sheriff's department is still gathering evidence from the crime scene and taking witness statements. they're encouraging anyone with information to come forward. in hayward, tom jensen, nbc bay area news. and as tom mentioned, the county has ordered the business to close because it doesn't have the proper licenses and permits. still, the lounge stayed open. in the wake of this morning's shooting, the county once again posted notices ordering the business to shut down. oakland police are looking

for a gunman after a shooting in the fruitvale neighborhood that happened after midnight near the corner of east 16th street and 35th avenue. this is video posted on citizen app. when officers got there, they found a person had been shot. paramedics took hip to the hospital. no word on how he's doing. investigators are not releasing more information now. walnut creek police are investigate an armed robbery where thousands of dollars in jewel jewelry were taken. a person hit them in the parking garage and stole $100,000 including a rolex watch. police are looking for them and asking falcon with information to come forward. today is earth day, and all week long we've been celebrating earth week, looking at the ways our changing climate is impacting life now and how it could affect the future. >> today couldn't have been a more beautiful day to celebrate the planet. and folks, maybe topping it all off -- look at that. the golden gate bridge up from

the cotton-like fog, fantastic. our shot from the central tower morning. look at all the fog making a special appearance over the golden gate bridge. the mayor hosted the great american litter pickup. people helped clean up trash in four different areas across the city including parks. the mayor says today wasn't only about cleaning up trash but also about community. >> we live in a world where we're all so busy, stressed out, and on our phones all the time. frankly, kind of disconnected. to have this opportunity to get to know somebody and work side by side to make our city a better place is really special. >> the mayor has been working each weekend with volunteers cleaning up the city. with these weekend cleanups, volunteers have collected -- are you ready -- more than 38,000 pounds of trash. >> that is a ton of trash. earth day festivities continued in the east bay. we stopped by fremont's annual earth day festival at the event

center. booths lined the plaza where people talked about and participated in activities like how to fix bikes so more people can ride instead of driving. people learned how to garden and could even pick up a plant at the celebration. also in the east bay, volunteers spent time in the sun this morning picking up trash at crown memorial state beach. they brought buckets and bags to collect garbage. organizers say most of the trash was plastic straws, cigarette butts, bottle caps, and cans. the weather today couldn't have been much better. celebrating earth day on a perfect earth day. rob? >> we saw the microclimate on full display with the fog earlier. sun around san francisco. lots of sunshine in san jose where we did get into the upper 70s earlier. now cooling to about 72 degrees. still near 80 degrees, 79 in walnut creek. we managed low 80s today in walnut creek and concord. and back to san francisco right

now, you got sunshine, but only 60 degrees. oceans temperatures west of san francisco, it's still 50 degrees. so as long as that wind is out of the west, it's tough to break out of those 60s. as we move forward, we talked about the summer weekend forecast climates here in april. we've got the 70s and 80s down toward morgan hill. 50s and 60s from half moon bay to san francisco. i think inland areas tomorrow will cool down a bit, plus we'll have more low clouds. we'll wake up to some drizzle at times for the morning. even in some of the inland valleys. short term things will be cooling tomorrow into monday. just around the corner, a much more significant warmup on the way where we could see mid to upper 80s in the inland forecast. more 70s bay side. a closer look at the warmup on the way in the seven-day forecast in about five minutes. >> all right. all the recent rain we've been getting has given us new signs of our climate in crisis in the central valley. the rain has fueled the return of a ghost lake of sorts to larry lake. it was once man, four times the

-- massive, four times the size of lake tahoe. farmers dried it out and planted crops on the land. now for the first time since 1983, it is a lake again. tonight we look at what this means for the farmers and our food supply here. >> it's an ocean now. there is no -- there is no end to it. it just -- it keeps on going forever. >> about 15% of the california crop of processed tomatoes is grown in the lake. most of that will be wiped out and not planted for two years. >> as we continue our earth week coverage, nbc bay area's joe rosato jr. takes us on a tour of tulare lake and shows why it will grow much bigger. that's coming up at 6:00. today is national drug take-back day. a safe and free way to get rid of prescription medication you no longer need. dozens of police departments across the bay area are hosting events including san jose police, you see it here. they're accepting prescription medication that's expired or no longer needed. that includes opioids.

the structure was an out building at one of the marina gates. crews were able to get the fire out before it spread to any other structures. no word on any injuries or what may have sparked that fire. new at 5:00, the slow return of life and livelihood in pajaro after devastating flooding down there. one of the first businesses to reopen includes el nepal bakery. the shop specializes in mexican banked goods and treats. the bakery owner says the storms in march caused thousands of dollars of damage, but they are happy to be up and running again. >> we had quite a bit of damage. you know, water got in. we had to tear up walls. it was a process. if they would have let us in sooner, the damage would have been less. but we're still glad that we're open. >> wow. el nopal said the first day back was a very busy one, and owners are hoping customers continue to support them. >> looks delicious. >> yes.

every day, earth day at a climate center in the east bay. today they're planting trees for the bees. in alameda this afternoon, people got a tour of the reap climate center. people learned about the bees and got a chance to look at different hives to learn about the importance of pollination. then they planted treats. the climate center follows a ten-to-one rule. that means in one tree comes down, they want to plant ten in its place. >> if we live within a system, right, and we need support that system to the best of our abilities. as you know, with the changing climate, we're seeing some loss of trees, loss of biodiversity that to some might be alarming. >> and the reap climate center focuses finding ways to help the earth by using tools in nature. >> and every earth day outside story we have done today, and it is just sunny as you can see in the picture behind us. >> yes. >> yes, low clouds a bit earlier this morning. sunshine and -- how are your allergies doing? >> terrible. terrible. >> hers are bad. i sit next to her. i guarantee hers are bad.

>> the sound of tissue boxes opening in the bay area. we're officially into spring. we can quantify how bad the allergies are. we've got the sun out, breezes ongoing. boy, the pollen count numbers continue to climb, especially for oak, cedar, and now sycamore. used to be pine, sycamore's come up a bit. we'll see the levels likely spike here over the next two weeks. and without really any rain, those numbers are probably going to stay high as we head through the weekend. and by the way, warmer temperatures on the way. you're seeing a sneak preview in the seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen. right now sunshine. san francisco, breezy and cool. just can't warm up unless you have the winds turning off shore which we might see develop by wednesday of next week for san francisco. 72 right now in san jose. breezy, winds about 17 miles per hour. 76 into dublin. and our final stop stakes us to san rafael where it's a pleasant 72 degrees, south wind at 14

miles per hour. one change, inland temperatures trending cooler tomorrow ads wind picks up. it's going to bring more low clouds to inland areas tomorrow. as we approach 9:00 tomorrow morning we have drizzle in the east bay and south bay locations. south bay valleys, east bay valleys, sunshine for the afternoon. a slightly stronger breeze will likely keep daytime highs tomorrow running just a few degrees cooler. some drizzle to deal with for the morning. temperatures starting off in the 50s as we move forward from lunchtime to mid-afternoon. no 80s on the map tomorrow. upper 70s around concord and fairfield and santa rosa. 60s from san francisco to oakland. 71 in the forecast for san jose. now as the upper level system makes its way east of the sierra, that's going to lied to the stronger -- lead to the stronger onshore wind as we go from sunday into monday. temperatures trending downward inland. watch what happens tuesday. now look at wednesday. look at these temperatures. 70s and 80s bayside.

mid to upper 80s possible around the bay area wednesday and thursday as strong high pressure builds in. that's going to lead to the warmup as we wrap up the week. very likely we're going to hang on to warm temperatures to the beginning of next weekend. oakland getting clots to 80 by the middle part of the week. and napa looking at numbers in the mid to upper 80s there as that high pressure locks in middle part of the week. even san francisco gets a chance at some 70s we think as we get toward wednesday and thursday. inland areas, the two-day cooldown tomorrow into monday, and lots of 80s in a few areas near sacramento and inland solano county. could be closing in on 90 wednesday and thursday. >> wow, you could maybe put the jacket away for next week. thank you. coming up, teaching technique and skill to kids in the south bay. we're going to take you to the special soccer tournament happening right now in san jose.
