moved indoors of the white house. it became a private space for the first family to enjoy out of the public view. this is a very early photograph of the white house conservatory. obviously this large glass building here. and the conservatory was steamy and exotic and overflowing with all types of hothouse plants. one 19th-century news reporter somehow did manage to get inside and describe the scene as "almost like penetrating the luxurious fragrance of some south american island. so warm and odiferous is the atmosphere." and first lady lucy webb hayes, seen here with her children and one of her friends in the conservatory had a tremendous amount of plants and was an avid gardener. she and her husband, rutherford b. hayes, utilized the conservatory in a special way. they were teetotalers, so there was no alcohol at the white house. after a dinner with guests, instead of serving drinks, they led tourists in the conservatory. it seems to have gone over surprisingly well with guests going away pleased with the experience.

white house stonewalling into the inquiries. the question is whether the legal, narrow legal reason they might give might be just because of the mcgahn refusing to testify. the overall point again is russia, trump, stonewalling the investigations. the question is i think whether they can make the case this is specifically about the stonewalling part, the white house refusing testimony and refusing to comply with requests for investigation and not about the broader russian question. you look at what trump is saying, he continues to say no collusion, no obstruction, let's move on. >> that's my point. the tax returns, that's a serious constitutional matter. if congress has the right under law to subpoena tax returns and he refuses to give them over, we have a constitutional crisis. we have a confrontation between the executive branch and legislative branch that is hard to sort through. that's why it is important if you want to be serious about this to go at things. what the white house is doing, we're not complying with anything. s
