carlin to history. happy hour. good evening, everyone, and thank you very much, samantha and the white house. historic association for the invitation to share this presentation of first ladies and civil rights. i've chosen two photos for this title slide down in the lower left. there's a photo of the washington hands, which would have been probably either in new york or philadelphia, showing them at home with their grandchildren and up in the upper right corner. there is a servant who was one of their enslaved workers who they brought from mount vernon to their presidential home. and this would have been a typical scene, apparently up in the upper right hand corner as eleanor roosevelt with marian anderson. and there's a very interesting story that will go with that photo to show the contrast and the change in times between the washingtons and eleanor roosevelt. and then what happened after eleanor? so let's begin with the washingtons. if you think about the history of our first ladies in civil rights, it's a check

first of all, george carlin said i'd like to find out where the line is, cross it deliberately, and then make the audience glad that i did. but most comedians do not know where the line is until they are in front of the audience trying out their material. it is the only art form where the audience is part, a significant part of the creative process. so we're trying to find the line, we're taking a risk, we're talking about something, but the audience is saying no, but we don't know that until we get in front of the audience. >> george carlin is the perfect example. his material from 20, 25 years ago that seemed crazy at the time has played out word for word. >> right. and it's so relevant today. he is, go on social media. and that's the other problem: we have the social media where people have a soap box that don't deserve a soap box. things are taken out of context. and it was like, you know, your uncle who said the crazy stuff and you'd say go on the basement. now they go on the basement, go online and find 10,000 people that agree with them. >> but do you feel like you're in a categor

you know, it doesn't for the people that own paraphrasing george carlin, the people that this country. right. what work for them is when we get together and we talk this about real things and even if we disagree, we try to find ways, common paths where we can find ways to work together or encourage people right to keep doing the things that they're doing. and we ask for help when we need it. right. so yeah, you hit the nail so squarely on the head with the entire literacy issue, you know, it's just it's pervasive. dan, you wanted to say something, yeah, i was going to this, going in it. it's okay good. it's time to go in a different direction. okay. so that's why you're here. yes. if the if you thought the fairness doctrine be repealed in the eighties had anything to do, like does have a significant impact on our media landscape today. and was the american media landscape any better before that was repealed? was it just kind of different problems? well yes and no. and this will definitely occasion me to to have sue maybe say a thing or two. he's done an awful lot work around media own

you can't trust anything he says and he hates trump now now it's a complicated story between michael carlin and donald trump, and that's something about the prosecution and the defense will have to grapple with in terms of what we should expect today. again, for viewers, who are just joining us, we do expect david. i mean, it seems like they are moving pretty quickly you've already heard opening statements from prosecution. we're now in the opening statements from the defense. as soon as this is done, first, witness should be called. >> yeah. prosecutors will go first and questioning that what trump had nothing to do with the invoice as his attorney with the cec being generated or with the entry of the ledger. and that is really going to be what from what? we've gathered from our sources is going to be the heart of trump's defense, which is one you can't trust michael cohen and to michael cohen was doing this on his own, that the people who are involved actually making these payments and legend putting these down in the business ledger that was all of the people who worked for donald trump
