nbc's maggie vespa is live from davenport, iowa, near the mississippi. nbc news meteorologist bill karins is with me as well. maggie, what are you seeing on the ground >> well, chris, we're seeing that the mississippi is essentially a lot closer to us than it was even 24 hours ago. i mean, this is the water of the mississippi here you can see kind of awkwardly the shell gas station behind it. we're not at the normal banks of the river. in fact, it's several hundred yards that way typically, and again, just one day ago it was basically at least a city block farther back, so this has been moving inland. it's been moving in steadily, ask y and you know, our team has been calling this a slow moving disaster that's when people are realizing this is indeed going to be low lying areas already flooded. people already in those areas getting to and from home by boat in the last couple of days, a local utility provider started cutting off gas to those homes arguing they have to it's a safety issue but people in those homes telling us they're really angry one woman

this is the mississippi river, behind the treeline. it has spilled over into this downtown area of davenport, iowa. where we are expecting the water level to continue to rise here until midday on monday. that is when we expect the highest level of this flooding here in davenport. there have already been points further north from here where the river has already crested but that is what we are bracing for here. i can tell you that it is not any kind of situation where there is a frantic evacuation going on. it is pretty calm, almost business as usual down here. they are used to flooding along the mississippi rivers. so this is something that they are expecting almost, seasonally. they've had it come through before, so it is not catching anyone off-guard, per se. broadly speaking, there have been people who say that they did not expect the flooding to be as bad as it has been and unfortunately people have had damage done to their homes and seem to have lost some possessions. but it is a pretty quiet slow-moving problem here. >> what abou
