i worked in the d.c. office all summer, and i was up in the press tent day of the march on the monument grounds you were at the lincoln memorial somewhere near there were were we started out at the washington monument with the press tent. but then when it got, you know, about time for the speeches, we got a van, something took us up closer. but also in that year you had the bombing in birmingham, alabama. oh, that was an awful year. well, we had fire hoses and police, not just in birmingham, but first in danville, virginia. anybody here from danville, we've heard of it. and we had a sit in. we had the assassination of medgar evers. yep. we had the church. what we and then we had the assassination of the president some. did i forget anything? you know. okay, i got it covered. if i forget, he generally remind me if i left out a little detail and so it was not a good year i mean, the only bright moment was the march on washington. the yearbook your son's connects, of which i had not looked at all those event

but d.c. was able to do many of the same things. if you look at across the united states, right, the metros with the highest percentage of african-americans were college are number one. washington, number two, atlanta. and so so having howard university with, its large universities, i think i'm not sure if is larger than the entire u.s. combined, but it is so large. that we've got a howard bias. we've got bison over here. we can't we can't believe the island of iowa. it was a double check dog. yeah, yeah, yeah. um, the business school, medical school, all of that. yeah. think you know it. i you know. yeah. you spend quite a bit so so that that is i think a very, very important factors why atlanta and d.c. become these places. the other thing is there's a i share the story i love the story there are two fascinating stories. i shared it with friends. there's a white comedian came to atlanta and he was like, he he had a show in atlanta. this was recently made last few weeks. and it came on my feet and he was like, yeah, i came atlanta

the soon she made several visits and to poverty stricken areas in washington, d.c. and she also requested that a black opera singer sing at the white house. so following some of the leads of some of her predecessors in terms of using entertainment, lady bird johnson took the next major step, and that was in 1964, after the passage of the civil rights bill. she went on a whistle stop tour, campaigns to her tour. it was difficult for lyndon johnson to go into the south after the passage of the civil rights bill. but lady bird, who had southern roots and who had family from alabama and used to spend much of her childhood there, summers said she would take it on, and she gave some pretty dramatic speeches that made it very clear what her position was. she said in one speech, i know that many of you do not agree with the civil rights bill or the president's support of it. it would be a bottomless tragedy for our country to be racial divided. this is not a challenge only in the south. it is a national challenge. this was such a dangerous trip that they were bomb threats.
