his father was an obstetrician, delivered a lot of d.c. and virginia babies, and danny was a writer. he actually kind of went to back it up for the between journalism and poetry and fiction in the early 1970's. he had investigated the watergate case. i found evidence of that in the fbi files that they were tracking his watergate investigation, and then throughout the late 1970's and 1980's danny wrote about the computer indtry for a small pc-based nslter called computer age, which if you think back to the late 1970's and early 1980's, writing about computers was pretty obscure. the computer industry was small and highly technical, and there were no personal computers really to speak of. these were like huge computers. anyway, danny published this newsletter. it was not necessarily something he was insanely passionate about. she had a child when he was about 21, so i think it was a stable source of income for him, and he wrote about computers, and he really dug into it, then he sold the publication in about 1990, and started pitching ideas,

with the nato summit in d.c. not far off, what will happen to washington, how is policy being formulated among nato allies? >> sadly, i have very low expectations for the upcoming summit, the 75th anniversary summit for the alliance. again, i think we see in washington and in berlin, they don't want to take a clear step forward toward ukraine's eventual membership in nato. we put together a proposal in october that was short of virtually extending an invitation for ukraine to join the alliance -- excuse me, to begin negotiations for alliance membership at the nato summit. we talked about inviting them to a session of membership talks and even that was a bridge too far for the white house. they talk about alliance unity. they talked about alliance unity at the vilnius summit which had a very modest, modest result on nato-ukraine. but they defined not unity based on the actors who are unwilling to move forward. is basically the u.s. and germany which is setting the pace, which is a very slow pace. if the administra

with all of that, not withstanding generative ai, it is clear there is a need for more at d.c. and the states. the states have stepped up in a lot of ways. california has raised the foundation for how they build privacy in their systems, and with judy p.r., it is baked into what they're doing now, but even with generative ai, and michigan, governor there passed a law around the closure of generative ai the head the election, so you can see the state starting to create the approaches for themselves that they think is a problem, and some have pros and others have cons. they are fresh off regulation, but given all of that in the moment that we are in it now, there is a strong need for it, for baseline regulations, but especially for ensuring that we can harness the opportunities of ai with balancing the risks, but the caveat is, as said, there is a lot already in their that does not apply to ai, and really excited that we are undertaking a body of work to see how does ai apply for the department of education or hhs and other organizations? so that is a good starting place for any

i'm always concerned when there is kind of groupthink in washington, d.c. and by the way, marco rubio himself who i have at the top of donald trump's long short list for vp, he was one of the ranking members of the intelligence committee along senator mark warner and a democrat, and he voted against that bill. he voted against anything to the border but again, even stuff like that, we will see what happens. we didn't talk about polls, which is what i do for a living. number one new york times bestseller, but i do hope that we can all get less rosy semi pulling this time, whether it was posters on the right to think everybody was winning everywhere, big red wave, that was silly. 91% accuracy in a year of terrible polling, and the washington post, abc news sure plapoll showing joe biden winning wisconsin by 17 points. you can't do that stuff. wisconsin is never going to show joe biden or donald trump up by 17 points. it is the swingiest of swing states, they each won by less than 1% in 2016 and 2020. i think we should all agree to not use polling as a weapon
