a skilled table tennis player, wasn't he? >> that kid's got game. >> good morning. >> good morning, jeff. >> good morning, everyone. also this morning we're going to talk about the case of josh hamilton. as you know he's a recovering drug addict and alcoholic. he became mvp in baseball, made this stunning comeback. now, though, he admits he went drinking again. we'll take a look this morning at what that might mean for his career and his future. and there's a new survey out of japan. apparently one-third of teenage boys and girls there just aren't interested in sex. their parents are probably thrilled to hear that. could playing video games the reason? if so, could a lower sex drive also happen here in the united states? we'll take a look at that. >> or they're just too busy watching football. first, parts of colorado, nebraska, wyoming and kansas are digging out from a powerful blizzard. the storm forced the closing of interstate 70 from denver to the

kansas border. hundreds of flights have been cancelled and correspondent bill whitaker is in snow-bound denver this morning. bill, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, jeff. this massive winter storm is tapering off here finally, moving east, losing strength as it passes over kansas and nebraska. but not before dumping a near record amount of snow and misery here in colorado. for the second night in a row, snow fell continuously, getting deeper and deeper, meaning more and more work for sam. he owns a snow removal company with a contract to keep denver's streets clear. >> it seems like you plow it once, it keeps snowing and you have to do it again. >> we go through and plow. covered and drifted again. >> reporter: this was the biggest storm to hit the region since 2007, one of the top ten storms on record. as it approached, people swarmed stores, stocking up and staying

in. when it hit, it was with a vengeance, stranding thousands of passengers at denver's airport, closing schools and closing i-70 almost all the way to kansas. roads were almost impassable, even for emergency vehicles. to the east of denver, blizzard conditions were even worse. >> it's been horrible. just going down the highway at 35 miles an hour, i'm in a skid. >> reporter: it wasn't horrible for everybody. brothers daniel and elijah harrison were charging $20 to clear a sidewalk and driveway. >> does it seem futile, you do this hard work and then it gets covered up again? >> well, we can come back and charge them more, but that's the way it is. >> reporter: those harrison brothers could have a lot of work. the average amount of snow here in the month of february is about 6 1/2 inches. this storm dropped more than twice that in just 48 hours. nancy.

>> wow, bill whitaker in denver this morning. thank you. and now to politics. mitt romney appears to be on cruise control. the republican presidential candidate is expected to win big today in the nevada caucus. romney was on the stump friday trying to convince voters he can put the nation's economy back on track, even as stronger than expected job numbers sent the unemployment rate tumbling. national correspondent chip reid is in las vegas this morning. chip, good morning. >> good morning, nancy. the caucuses begin here in nevada in a matter of hours and people here in las vegas are putting their money on mitt romney. for months mitt romney has accused president obama of making the recession worse. but after friday's surprisingly strong economic report showed unemployment falling from 8.5 to 8.3%, romney's tune changed a bit. >> we got good news this morning. job creation in january. i hope that continues, we get people back to work. >> reporter: but here in nevada
8:06 am
where unemployment has soared since the president took office from 8.7 to 12.6%, highest in the nation, romney still found plenty to criticize. >> this recovery has been slower than it should have been. people have been suffering longer than they should have had to suffer. this president has not helped the process, he's hurt it. >> reporter: in three campaign appearances, romney did not even mention newt gingrich, who trails romney here 45 to 25%. >> my goal is not to ignore or forget the poor. my goal is to turn the safety net into a trampoline to allow the poor to rise an be like the rest of us. >> reporter: nancy, you may recall that earlier this week when romney won the florida primary, his new debate coach got a lot of the credit. apparently he got too much of the credit. he's been let go for that reason by the campaign. >> the campaign likes to give
8:07 am
all the credit to the candidate. does it appear mr. romney has gotten past that comment about the very poor that was dogging him all week? >> reporter: i think he has gotten past it in the republican caucuses and primaries at least, or at least here in nevada. gingrich has brought it up and it hasn't seemed to have helped him. you can bet over the summer and into the fall if romney is the republican nominee, the obama campaign will bring it up repeatedly to make the case that romney is out of touch. >> then they head from here to colorado. in that state looking good for him as well? >> reporter: well, i don't think that is going to hurt him there. they think they really are, as you said earlier, on cruise control right now. they think they're going to do very well in colorado. as far as the romney campaign is concerned, this thing is just about over and i think that's the message he's sending by not even mentioning his republican opponents in his speeches now. nancy. >> chip in las vegas this morning, thank you so much. >> reporter: you bet.
8:08 am
as we reported here, there are signs the economy is getting stronger now. 243,000 new jobs were added last month. that is the largest gain since april of last year. the unemployment rate dropped to 8.3%. that is the lowest in three years. here with more is the chief invest strategist of charles schwab. good morning. >> good morning. >> good to see you again. >> thank you. >> these numbers from yesterday, okay, good, great. >> pretty close to great. i think what was unique about this month relative to past months was there was not much you could follow the word "but" with. the skeptics have dived into each month's number and found some fault with it. this time it was strength across the board and i think that was -- that made it particularly unique relative to recent trends. >> so increased jobs four months in a row. does this happen the next four months as well? >> most of the leading indicators suggest continued strong job growth. in fact one of the interesting things about the number, and
8:09 am
particularly yesterday but in general is there's two surveys used to create the numbers we get on a monthly basis. there's the payroll survey which is where we get the number of jobs lost or gained and then there's a household survey and that's where the unemployment rate is derived. that showed 631,000 jobs created and that's good news because it tends to lead the payroll survey. >> what are the biggest issues outstanding for the economy then? >> the debt crisis. i think we are just in the beginning of the deleveraging cycle. the private sector started a few years ago because of the financial crisis. now the public sector is being forced, government sector is being forced to delempverage. the jobs picture is improving. >> we always look at these reports week to week and month to month but we're still talking about something that takes years. >> it does. and there are structural problems that will be an impediment to getting the unemployment rate down to something i think would make all of us feel comfortable.
8:10 am
there's a skills gap, an education gap, the fact that mobility has been hampered by the jobs crisis -- i mean by the housing crisis, so i think there are issues that will mean we're going to have a slower pace of decline. >> let me talk about this, the jobless rate as it pertains to the presidential election, because that obviously is a huge topic of discussion. is it possible the rate ticks back up again before the election? >> you know, it is historically the case that you often see an uptick in the unemployment rate because as things start to get better, more people jump back into the workforce. they say things are improving, i'd like to look again, i consider myself in the market again. so if more people are in the mix, that has a tendency to boost the jobless rate at least for a short period of time. so it is certainly possible that this trend is not going to be unidirectional and history suggests that. >> you'll be watching, we'll be watching. thanks very much.
8:11 am
appreciate it. now to the growing power of social media. the susan g. komen for the cure foundation, the nation's largest breast cancer charity, has had a change of heart. it decided to continue funding planned parenthood but only after suffering a firestorm of controversy on the internet. correspondent elaine quijano has more. >> reporter: three days after the controversy publicly erupted, the susan g. komen for the cure foundation said sorry. quote, we want to apologize to the american public for recent decisions that cast doubt upon our commitment to our mission of saving women's lives. in a phone call with reporters, planned parenthood's president, cecile richards, said she was grateful. >> what we've seen over the last few days and outpouring of support sends a real important message that women are willing to stand up for women and women's health. >> reporter: it was an explosion of anger online and in the halls of congress that prompted komen to reverse its earlier decision to cut planned parenthood's
8:12 am
funding. washington state senator patty murray congratulated komen cautiously. >> we will remain vigilant to make sure politics doesn't come between us and our health care. >> reporter: the fury seemed to catch the largest breast cancer charity off guard. recently ranked the second most trusted nonprofit, the komen foundation managed to outrage people on both sides of the nation's most divisive issue, abortion. charmain leads the group americans united for life. >> we have been working very diligently to get all the information out there about how planned parenthood does this. there are real serious questions about their financial stewardship of public moneys that they receive. >> reporter: in its statement komen said it would continue to fund planned parenthood's existing grants and would preserve planned parenthood's ability to apply for grants in the future. i'm elaine quijano, new york. joining us now is john able, new york bureau chief for
8:13 am
wider.com. john, good morning. >> good morning. >> thanks for being here. >> my pleasure. >> wow, talk about the power of social media. >> how about that. score one for the internet. >> yeah. i mean you think that this all ended so quickly because of this huge outpouring of anger online. i mean ten to one the messages were against susan g. komen on its own facebook page. >> there was volume. you had the mayor of new york, mayor bloomberg and lots of other people saying this was an outrage. so you have the trajectory of lots of people expressing scorn. but actually i think it saved komen. because they were able to see so much blowback so quickly, they were able to process that information and come to what many think is a very wise decision to just say we got it wrong, we're not doing this anymore. in the old days, a couple of years afoe, if they had been allowed to just suffer in the fwoi wind for two weeks, they might have damaged themselves permanently. >> they tried to use the internet to their advantage as
8:14 am
well. the founder put out a statement on youtube the very next day trying to explain why they had done this. how did that go over? >> it just made matters worse. the issue isn't the social media component, it's the tone deafness. what komen was able to do was say, look, this isn't working. we clearly have gotten this wrong somehow. by definition, wrong is people don't like us for it, especially for a charity. whether or not you believe in what they're doing or what they're not. wrong by definition is people don't like this and they're going to not donate anymore so they got it right by virtue of being able to see how many people disliked what they were doing. >> there are a lot of people in this country who are anti-abortion. where were those voices? why weren't those people flooding komen's facebook page saying we applaud you for this decision? is it just outrage is a bigger motivator? >> there was quite a bit of that on twitter, quite a bit of this is the best thing that ever happened kind of thing, we hate
8:15 am
these people. but the actual really rise of sentiment was from donors, from people who actually do believe in whatever you want to believe in, the neutrality of this or whatever, that this was something which was done for perhaps the wrong reasons. those are the voices that rose highest. komen is about charity, it's about getting money from people who don't have it to give it to them so they have to keep that in mind. >> does this remind you of other controversies that have played out on the internet in the past, say with bank of america and its debit card fees or netflix when it changed its policies? >> yes. all of these examples are great. netflix decided to divide up its dvd business and people said you're crazy. bank of america raised fees, which in the old days would have been on page 92 in terms of service and nobody had read. in hours it was gone. you had the rejection by congress of two bills which were nearly ready to pass that would have changed the internet in very important ways. we can't get into that.
8:16 am
boom, gone. we had the arab spring. boom, gone. what's happening is the information is so rapid, so accelerated, so available to everyone, there's no doubt what's going on in the psyche of civilization anymore, so you have more pure information to decide what to do. >> and it gives everyone the power to affect their organizations. john, thank you so much for coming in this morning. we really appreciate it. and now for the rest of the morning's headlines, cbs news correspondent and morning news anchor, betty nguyen is at the news desk. good morning, betty. >> good morning. huge numbers of protesters braving temperatures of 1 degree above zero filled the streets of moscow this morning. they're demanding an end to what they say is election fraud and prime minister vladimir putin's rule. elizabeth palmer is in the capital and joins us now live. good morning, elizabeth. >> reporter: good morning. it may be 1 degree above zero, it actually feels a lot colder
8:17 am
than that because of the windchill. about 20, maybe 30,000 people marched from a very famous square in central moscow through the city and then assembled for speeches. it was a great big coalition of opposition groups that included everybody from very far right wing nationalists to huge groups of liberal middle class people fed up with election fraud and pcorruption in russia, and then of course they were joined by the communists and some of the old opposition. they listened to speeches briefly down in the center of moscow by the river and then because of the cold, the crowd dispersed quite quickly. it was a very good natured demonstration but it certainly made the point that people were unhappy. >> to stand out there in that kind of cold which you're experiencing unfortunately right now. but what are the marchers actually trying to accomplish with this? >> reporter: it would be fair to
8:18 am
say that they're all opposed to vladimir putin and his totalitarian rule, but they recognize that they can't get rid of him. he's still very popular in russia. he's going to run for president next month. so what they're saying is if we're going to have presidential elections in march, they must be clean. we want elections that have no fraud. and of course the point they're trying to make is if they can, for example, have no fraud in moscow, that will show that president putin is a lot less popular than he and his propaganda machine would have russians believe. >> all right, elizabeth palmer in a very cold moscow today. thank you so much. stay warm out there. it has been one of the bloodiest days in the nearly year-long anti-government uprising in syria. activists say more than 200 people were killed in this city in a ferocious assault by government forces. syria denies the assault. the united nations security

make it a great saturday. jeff, nancy, over to you. >> thank you very much. it promises to be a big game. nancy is really -- >> what game are you talking about? >> naency is really into. the new york giants battle the new england patriots for the second time in four years. >> the winning team gets the vince lombardi trophy and each player gets $88,000. for the first time the game is being played in indianapolis, which is where cynthia bowers is right now. >> reporter: good morning, nancy. you know, hosting this super bowl week is a huge financial undertaking and exactly how much money it generates for the local economy is hard to quantify. economists here say between $150 and $400 million.
8:22 am
but so far until today, the weather, 50s and sunny, has played a huge role in boosting those numbers, getting tourists out and about. for people who joke indianapolis is flyover country, there may be something to that. thousands of tourists are opting for an airborne view of the city 80 feet above downtown indy on a zip line. what sets super bowl xlvi apart is the setting. in a smaller host city, most events and attractions are within a one-mile radius, making it more intimate, like an olympic village. >> it feels like the entire city is a part of it. >> reporter: out of towners here for the big game agree, indy is doing it up right. >> i want to compliment indianapolis, one of the best setups in my 26 super bowls how they made it. >> reporter: souvenir shops are selling lots of red, white and blue colored caps, jerseys and
