Hello. I'm kinda new to the Dead, but I've got a lot of their studio albums, and quite a few of their audience recordings as well. I was looking through this:

http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=collection%3A%28GratefulDead%29%20AND%20date%3A[1972-04-07%20TO%201972-05-26]&sort=-date

And found that several dates are repeated a few times. Why is this?

Hi Sean, Sure am glad you have found some enjoyment so far and I know that the more you hear, the more you'll find new and wonderful music to enjoy each time. The reason for the multiple choices for a lot of dates is that this archive can be added to by any person who has a different tape/transfer of that show. The shows that are represented here may have likely been recorded by more than one tape machine, some were fed straight from the Soundboard, some may have been recorded by Audience members with microphones placed in the room. So that is the basic place that the choices start. There may have been only one, a couple, or even several of either of these types of tapes made during any show.

Each tape may or may not have been:
Equalized for volume and/or bass/treble response during the taping; maybe Dolby was used too;
May have been recorded from microphones placed in different positions inside the hall - giving a different sound reproduction;
Some tapes may be incomplete- taper ran out of tape; Cassette may have had to be flipped over and missed a few seconds/minutes until the next side started; Maybe someone taped over a portion of the tape with something different; Maybe the tape was already used before the show was taped, result may have been a little weaker than a new tape;
Tape generations: The tape may have been copied one or more times by reel or cassette, each time a tape is copied, a little bit is lost, and maybe a little bit of tape hiss is added each time;
Transfered to digital: analogue (cassette or reel) tapes must be recorded into a digital form to be uploaded. There may have been some variations/fixes made by the person doing the transfer, such as sound levels, noise reduction or enhancements, pitch or tape timing may have been adjusted;
Matrix - a mixture of soundboard and audience sources combined to hear in one listening.
Sometimes, different transfers of the same original source are done with different hardware/software and by different people with different choice in levels for better or worse, changing the sound quality -

All of these variations will make a difference in the final version that you choose to listen to. That's it in a nutshell, and I'm sure there are more things to say about that by our friends who know a lot more about the tech stuff than me. Read some of the reviews and try to make up your mind which ones you agree with to make your listening choice
