Written proof either way is very subjective.
As almost every newspaper and lyric sheet in 1964 wrote, "I can't hide!"
Yet all of us knew those guys were singing "I get high!"
(Yes, newspapers did print the hit songs lyrics.)

If the clown wants you to laugh at his big shoes it shouldn't matter if his feet do fit them.

No. They really were singing 'I can't hide' whatever you might have wanted them to be singing. 'It's such a feeling that, my love, I can't hide.' McCartney wrote the song for Jane Asher and in 64 the Beatles were more into speed than weed.
