I agree that adding link level encryption to an inherently open network is pointless.

First off, you should never be sending cleartext passwords over the internet, because once the packets leave your domain you have 0% control over them and hence 0% security. On the Internet, your packets can be snooped by anybody who finds them.

Even if the SFLAN were to provide 100% security over its links, because security is only as strong as the weakest link, using the Internet you would still have your security reduced to: MIN(0%,100%)==0%.
