now we are going to go see the ceramics gallery, where we try to tell the whole history of the south in objects made of one material, objects made of clay. we are looking at one of the largest and most monumental of pottery produced in edgefield, south carolina. in the 19th century, it was home to a number of what were essentially pottery plantations, places where free and enslaved potters converted the clay of the ground and the local materials into these very useful, practical vessels. the names of all of these enslaved potters worked in these places, but there is one big exception, and that is david drake, whose work we see here. dave was a phenomenally talented potter. the sheer physical force required to convert raw clay into a vessel this large is a test of his skill. but dave also speaks to us through his work. more than 150 examples of his work in which he signed and sign of a a potter, but even more significant are the pots where he adds his own poetic inscription -- here is a man at a time when it was illegal to teach and enslaved person to read or write, is doing both. he
