today's deposition comes after months of negotiating with cipollone. >> reporter: hey, pat cipollone is a big get for the select committee. and it's easy to see why. he was a key fact witness and had a front row seat to a number of pivotal episodes leading up to january 6 and also on january 6th. sources tell cnn that pat cipollone was in and out of the dining room with donald trump on january 6th during those critical 187 minutes where trump refused to act even as he watched on television as the rioters stormed the capitol building. and so that critical time period of inaction is expected to be a large focus of one of the upcoming hearings. and pat cipollone could really help the committee fill in the gaps, especially since there are long gaps in the white house records from that day. now we've also heard from other witnesses who have testified that pat cipollone was expressing concerns about trump's behavior and the potential legal concerns there on january 6th. and witnesses have also said that pat cipollone threatened to quit over trump's plan to overturn the election, calling it

you will see certain segments of pat cipollone's testimony today. also see today how president trump summoned a mob to washington and how the president stole an election lies provoked that mob to attack the capitol and hear from a man induced by president trump's lies to come to washington and join the mob. and how that decision has changed his life. today's hearing is our seventh. we have covered significant ground over the past several weeks. and we have also seen a change in how witnesses and lawyers in the trump orbit approach this committee. initially their strategy in some cases appeared to be to deny and delay. today there appears to be a general recognition that the committee has established key facts, including virtually everyone close to president trump, justice department official, white house counsel, his campaign, all told him the 2020 election was not stolen. this appears to have changed the strategy for defending donald trump. now the argument seems to be president trump was manipulated by others outside the administration, that he wa

overall what did you get from pat cipollone? what more would you want from him and what did you think about where he chose to use privilege? >> well, i would have loved to have heard exactly what he said to the president, but they engaged in this sort of artificial game, i guess, to avoid a fight so cipollone would have the fig leaf of pretending to uphold a privilege that really doesn't exist and to that the committee could get something out of cipollone. he pretended that what he said to the counsel -- excuse me, the chief of staff and to other people at the white house that were serving the president was not privileged and what he said directly to the president was privileged and that's just baloney. the executive privilege would cover telling the chief of staff what the president needs to do from a legal standpoint. that would be privileged if it were privileged to begin with. of course, it wasn't privileged here because privilege has been waived six ways to sunday and the privilege also belongs to the public and the justice
