a rare sight in northern california thanks to a solar storm. check out this time lapse taken by photographer brian fulda. he posted this on his instagram page showing the northern lights over blue canyon. that's up in placer county right off of 80. there people all over the country got to enjoy this sight. the best views away from city lights. that doesn't mean you couldn't see it from the bay area, because you definitely could. these photos were taken by meteorologist rob mayeda in danville. see the colorful lights above the houses there and here to verify that is rob himself to talk about that happened. i was shocked, you know it's fantastic for northern california. it's good if you could see a little bit of red on the horizon. but to see all the colors associated with the aurora that was pretty unique this far south. typically you might find this in alaska or canada, but with the aurora set up as far south as it was last night, the upper energy particles reacting off the earth's atmosphere, the molecules up there, the oxygen and nitrogen mol

the northern lights were shining in california. these are pictures from antioch. the vibrant colors you see there, courtesy of a severe solar system. solar storm photos taken from across the u.s. wow. showing the night sky lit up in hot pink, purple and green. that's a picture from the mendocino coast. the reason for that great view is a g5 level geomagnetic storm. hasn't happened since 2003. sushant mahajan is a postdoctoral fellow at the stanford solar group. he tells us that the region has created solar flares and coronal mass ejections, known as cmes. those cmes are racing toward the earth at 500 miles per second. humans are not in danger, but they could affect power grids, navigation and satellite communications. we might see some voltage fluctuations and radio frequency blackouts for sure. radio communication will be a bit difficult over the next couple of days, and we might even occasionally see cell phone, signals being affected or your gps, is more vulnerable that solar storm is expected to continue tonight into tomorrow, so i guess keep your eyes to the
