Compilation footage of Nazi concentration camps in the immediate aftermath of World War II. The footage was gathered by the US Department of Defense as part of the effort to conduct war crimes trials.

Subject: Friedellino's review is pure poetry
To Vienna Mikel (Friedellino) I can only say your English is good enough, friend! And your review is pure poetry in it's power.

To those who would argue that more Jews should have fought against the Nazis at that time, I would say that most of the Jews (especially those who had lived in Germany for generations)simply could not believe that any government would perpetrate such a monstrous crime.

To those who would say it never happened, even the SS did not stoop to such a ridiculous lie. Here is a quote from the trial of SS Oberscharführer Josef Niedemayer, the Commandant of the bunker, which was the prison inside the camp, and also the officer in charge of the infamous Block 20, "There was a gas chamber in the camp. About four thousand prisoners were gassed there. When a transport arrived for the gas chamber, I informed the S.S. officers Bachmayer, Zutter or Altfuldisch. The men to be gassed were taken to the bunker where I, personally, with my assistants, S.S. officers Rommel and Proksch, verified the list of names and removed articles of value and documents. Then S.S. guards Roth and Gerber accompanied the condemned men to the gas chamber. After the execution, the S.S. dentists, Henkel and Franz Jutmann, removed the gold teeth. During March and April 1945, one thousand four hundred sick prisoners were gassed, selected by Doctor Wolter, the chief doctor (from August 1944)."
And this is just one of several examples that can be cited.

The following is usually attributed to Doetrich Bonhoffer or Martin Niemoller, both pastors in Germany and it describes the situation under Nazi rule quite well.
"In Germany they first came for the Communists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist.

Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Catholics,
and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant.

Then they came for me —
and by that time no one was left to speak up."

The politics of hate that has grown around this period in history is disgusting, but hate has been around for many generations and shows little sign of disappearing, I am sad to say.

The Signal Corps did a fine job with the filming, and when Ike and Patton walk through a camp, they look angry!

When they knowed about that all was shit what Hitler sayd to them it was much to late .He told at 30 Jänner 1939 what he will make with the Jews when the world war will come again and so he made all what he said .like he always made what he said.Himmler and Heydrich were the blooddogs . For every one who dont belive hear the Posener Speach ,read their writings look at the thausends of peoples words after the war and the most sayd the same Nobody can make such a big miracle taht all people say the same .After the war many of the Nazis lived in our country and they never saw a prison ,because there was abig problem they had good Positions .And when they had realy had been killers theey lived on the country where nobody would look.The problem with the justice was like the same from the principe you have now with the People from Cia under the gouverment of Bush.How can I say they made wrong things when the state said to make it ? And so many nazis went trough the years in our country with out problems .In the first years they were quiet but after twenty years the thought they can talk now of this "glory time" They never said we did not only the young Neonazi tried this lie .The old said Yes we did ,are we great ?It was hard but we made ! This footage should be restored to its full clarity and it an any similar evidence be easy to locate.

The extreme suffering endured is reflected in the eyes of the survivors, overwhelmed in their sadness, numbness and gratitude. As I looked at the masses of crumbled dead I could see the life that had left each body - that sparkle that once came from their eyes, the blush of a cheek, the smile that had once been. The energy that departed at the sigh of death. The lost soul.

I am glad that the American and British liberators made the guards (both male and female) and Camp Commander deal with the moving and burying of the dead. If ever there was a reason for the death penalty this was it and I hope each one of them was hung. They just didn't think they would ever be caught and be there when their perverted atrocities were discovered by the world. They never thought they would be accountable for their actions.

May all the perpetrators of torture, rape, murder, and genocide and their progeny meet God's vengeance for eternity.

Subject: a gruelsome account, an important find
Almost everyone wants to see this kind of a Holocaust documentary, something that openly reveals the dreadful sacrifices and pains the Jews and other prisoners had inflicted by the Nazis. We all know the Holocaust isn't just about the Auchwitz, labor enslavement and gassing of the Jews. We crave for more information and we want to know more.

Luckily, something like this is available to everyone. Although it may give severe discomfort to some people, this is definitely a must-see. I'm more than blessed that Internet Archive has this.

Why didn't they get out of the country when they had the chance? It was not stupidity as Sandra O suggests.

The program that was to allow the Jews to leave Germany was like many other programs applied to the Jews--it was deceitful and deceptive. (For instance, after the Germans had taken over a town they would sometimes post notices for Jews to report for a census under the charade of forming work details. When the Jews reported as required, they were then marched a few kilometers out of town to large trenches and then murdered--shot in the back of the neck--this included men, women and children.)

The main reason they didn't just leave was that in order to leave Germany the person had to find a country that would allow them to immigrate--very few would. (Roosevelt held a conference of 39 of the world's "civilized" countries with the expressed intention of increasing immigration quotas--not one country would increase their quota.)

Also, if a Jew wanted to leave the country, they had to overcome the Nazi bureauracy that made the process so difficult that only those with connections and money could succeed. This process applied to each individual member of the family so rarely would an entire family be allowed to leave.

If a person found a country that would accept them and they succeeded in overcoming the Nazi bureauracy, they then had to surrender ALL of their property to Germany before leaving Germany with only 10 Marks in their pocket. Not to mention leaving their families behind.

Many did run, entering other countries (like France, Spain, Sweden, etc.) illegally. Others ran to the east (Poland, etc). For most, these countries were only temporary safehavens.

Many of the comments i read here and the repulse me(and i just watched this movie in its entirety). Many are supremely naive comments about how the holocaust is a lie made by Zionists. These comments make me think these people have not watched the videos but simply decided to post there hate here, I am Dutch and my mother lived in the Netherlands during the occupation, these atrocities did not happen solely to Jews. Anyone who was outside what they saw as acceptable would be sent off to camps, young men were rounded up and forced into the army or would be sent to camps, people who were caught supporting the Dutch government in exile were sent off to camps. These horrible camps were a method of keeping people down. For the few and extremely naive who decide to post on this page about this is all Jewish propaganda, please grow up and get a life.
I think this video should be shown in schools to teach just what the Nazis did. My family had cousins who were taken away to never return and i could not help but think this was probably where they turned up. You can cite numbers and teach facts but to see this video and realize that every corpse was once a person with a life and family brings it home.

This is a film that depicts the truly grotesque side of humanity; the result of a society permeated by psychopaths. These low-lifes still live among us; look no further than some of the comments here for proof.

The only pleasurable part of this documentary was seeing the pathetic villagers, who either rejoiced in the death and torture of others, or cowardly feigned innocence, having to take part in the removal of the corpses.

A fitting end would have been to to move them to the same camps for a little taste of their own medicine.

back in high school, we had a teacher who would every few years put on a 'show' and give a nazi speech. i remember when my friends and i entered the audotarium(SP?) we were playing and clowning around not taking it serioiusly. 'yeah, yeah Mr. x is going to role play for us today' shortly after we took our seats he came marching in to the audotarium(SP?)and started his 'speech'. at first we students laughed and catcalled at him, but the more he talked the more we started listen not out of entertainment but out of shock at what was being said. i dont think i have ever seen that many open mouths...i wont bore you with the parts of the speech that i remember from almost 25 years ago except to tell about his 'closing'. he gave us what i think of as the nazi salute then walked off the stage. half way to the door he stopped, took off his jacket and rolled up his sleeve to show the numbers tatooed there and then finished walking out.

over and over . . . u.s.s.r, former yugoslavia, many parts of africa, killing of most native peoples in most areas, over and over and over. it may take a different form but it is still i hate you because you are different.

Yeah, what Green Peace says about global warming and what the holocast ment to the jews are equalent, right... especially since just twenty years ago Green Peace made a buck or two out of the "global freezing" preachings.

Gunter, that comment was just based on hysteria and it was really disgraceful to the people that suffered through the WWII exterminations. To even compare... it's... nasty.

this helpless dokument is a very good documentation of the cruel things that happened in Germany. The brutality in the people came with the way the society changed in this time. IT could have been you, because you did not choose where and when to be born! watch it and keep it in mind, than this helpless documentation becomes help !

Subject: unbelievable footage
The footage is good for its age, but the subject matter is difficult to watch all at once. Not for everyone, but still a must-see.

Would it be possible to break down into the separate reels? I had a connection interruption, and had to re-start download. What i was able to watch was worth the effort.

Reel 1:

Army Lt. Col. George C. Stevens, Navy Lt. E. Ray Kellogg and U.S. Chief of Counsel Robert H. Jackson read exhibited affidavits which attest to authenticity of scenes in film. Map of Europe shows locations of concentration camps in Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czechoslovokia, Danzing, Denmark, France, Germany, Isle of Jersey, Latvia, Netherlands, Poland and Yugoslavia. At Leipsig Concentration Camp, there are piles of dead bodies, and many living Russian, Czechoslovakian, Polish and French prisoners. At Penig Concentration Camp, Hungarian women and others display wounds. Doctors treat patients and U.S. Red Cross workers move them to German Air Force hospital where their former captors are forced to care for them.

Reel 2:

At Ohrdruf Concentration Camp, inspection team composed of Allied military leaders, members of U.S. Congress and local townspeople tours camp. Among them are Generals Dwight David Eisenhower, Supreme Headquaters Allied Expeditionary Forces commander; Omar Nelson Bradley; and George S. Patten. General Eisenhower speaks with Congressmen. They see bodies heaped on grill at crematorium and Polish, Czechoslovakian, Russian, Belgian, German Jews and German political prisoners. Col. Heyden Sears, Combat Command A, 4th Armored Division commander, forces local townspeople to tour camp. U.S. officers arrive at Hadamar Concentration Camp, where Polish, Russian and German political and religious dissidents were murdered. Maj. Herman Boelke of U.S. War Crimes Investigation Team (WCIT) examines survivors. Bodies are exhumed from mass graves for examination, identification and burial. Four-man panel interviews facility director Dr. Waldman and chief male nurse Karl Wille.

Reel 3:

At Breendonck Concentration Camp, Belgium, methods of torture are demonstrated. At Harlan Concentration Camp near Hannover, U.S. Red Cross aides Polish survivors. Allied troops and able-bodied survivors bury dead. At Arnstadt Concentration Camp, German villagers are forced to exhume Polish and Russian bodies from mass graves.

Reel 4:

At Nordhausen Concentration Camp, there are piles of bodies. Troops treat, feed and remove survivors who are mainly Polish, Russian and French. At Mauthausen Concentration Camp, Navy Lt. Jack H. Taylor stands with fellow survivors and describes his capture, imprisonment and conditions at Mauthausen. Volunteers bathe victims.

Reel 5: At Buchenwald Concentration Camp, Army trucks arrive with aid for survivors. Piles of dead, mutilated and emaciated bodies. Some survivors among dead. Huge ovens and piles of bone ash on floor of crematorium. Civilians from nearby Weimar are forced to tour camp. They see exhibits of lampshades made of human skin, and two shrunken heads.

R.6: British commander of Royal Artillery describes conditions at Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp. German Army Schutzstaffel (SS) troops are forced to bury dead and aid survivors. Woman doctor, former prisoner, describes conditions in female section of camp. Belson commander Kramer is taken into custody. German guards bury dead. Bulldozer pushes piles of bodies into mass graves.
