highs in the mid-60s near 70. we'll have a breeze out of the northwest at times gusting over 20 miles per hour. this morning, clouds are breaking in some spots. thats a hay lowed fog to form. cumberland out to oakland, a half-mile or less. 51 at national. lots of low to mid-40s off to the north with upper 40s down across prince george's county. low 50s in southern maryland. again, highs today. 65 to 70. grant shades! >> monika? >> i'll start off with the yellow light this time not because we have any major incidents, just slowing down a bit. a couple of incidents to tell you about. beltway looking fine all around town. let's zoom in first to the north side of town. you have the minor delays leaving 95 as you head toward silver spring then you're ok in bethesda heading over to 270. we'll take a live north at the

beltway. no problems as you head for oxon hill and the wilson bridge. westbound on the suitland parkway at first sterling avenue, just got word that police are on the scene of an accident. back to the maps now. this time, we'll zoom into the other side of town. over to the american legion bridge. no problems from 270 across the bridge. we'll take a live look just north of the bridge span here and if you're traveling in toward virginia, tysons corner and 66, you will be ok right now. let's take a look at the travel times starting off with 66 on the inbound side. it is 11 minutes, the beltway 95 to 270. 95 in from 260 in ten minutes. in my next report, i'll update you on the accident in southeast at 6:12. back to you guys. at the top of the hour, let's get a check on some of the stories happening today. a test program for airport security begins at four major airports. it is called risk based screening. flyers offer up more personal information to get through lines faster. it is being tried out in

atlanta, dallas, detroit and miami. >> gadget geeks getting excited watching for the announcement from apple. it is expected to unveil the iphone 5. no leaks believe it or not on the new features. it is expected to be available on sprint, verizon and at&t networks. >> virginia's governor will join donald trump in cutting the ribbon on the vineyards estate in charlottesville. governor mcdonnell hopes it boasts nationwide -- it will boost a nationwide interest in wines made in the commonwealth. also today, we expect amanda knox to arrive back here in the united states. she'll be leaving italy in any moment. >> monday, an italian court set her free. >> surae chinn is live. she's been following it. she has new reaction from actually amanda knox herself this morning. surae? >> in a letter, she thanked all of those who supported her while she was in prison. she said "sharing my suffering and helped me survive with

hope." amanda knox, a free woman after an emotional day in an italian courtroom. >> both are acquitted. ordered immediate release from prison. >> reporter: breaks down sobbing after hearing the verdict, the 26-year murder conviction overturned, accused of killing her roommate. there was clapping inside the courtroom as she was led away by italian police. >> we're thankful that amanda's nightmare is over. she suffered for four years for a crime she did not commit. we're thankful for the support we have received from all over the world. people who took the time to research the case and could see that amanda and rafael raffaele sollecito were innocent. at last, we're thankful to the court for having the courage to look for the truth and to overturn this conviction. >> amanda knox's family has been spotted at an airport in rome this morning. amanda is expected to board at

any moment and head back to the united states via london. meanwhile, the victim's family has already spoken at a press conference about an hour and a half ago. we'll have that reaction coming up in the next half hour. >> thank you, surae. former prince george's county councilwoman leslie johnson wants to put her sentencing on hold for awhile. johnson's attorney filed a motion in federal court seeking to delay her october 13th sentencing date. she resigned last june following her admitting in federal court she tried to conceal bribe money given her husband former county executive jack jon. it appears 300 new d.c. police recruits are coming just in the nick of time. authorities say the force loses 15 veteran officers every month to retirement. this is the first recruiting class in more than a year. police chief cathy lanier is hoping to have 3900 officers on the streets next year. some of the recruits we spoke with say they're ready to make

a positive impact. >> i began thinking well, to help fight crime. actually, my father is a police officer here. >> starting pay for d.c. police officers is about $49,000 a year. today, president obama will be in dallas. it is his latest effort to push his $447 billion jobs plan. he's facing opposition on both sides. especially tax hikes on the wealthy. the president blames republicans on the hill saying they need to on this soon while senate republicans say it is the democrat who have been slowing things down. >> it has been several weeks since i set up the american jobs act. as i've been saying on the road, we want it back. >> why are we not considering this american jobs act unless my democrat friends disagree that the act would be the most important job creator available for us today. i really don't believe anybody believes that.

>> the recent tbs poll finds 35% of americans approve of the way president obama is handling the economy. it is 6:06. jessica doyle is back with another "your money" report. >> despite all of those new fees we pay when we fly, a major airline is in trouble. >> well, if you're an investor and you see the stock of your company halted, feel free to -- the general news is there's something bad going on. try the stock being halted seven times in one day! that's exactly what happened to american airlines parent company yesterday. the stock was halted seven times! it hit 2001 lows at one point being offered as much as 41%. there are rumors american airlines could be considering a bankruptcy. behind the rumors, take a look at the airline business. things have been looking better thanks to checked luggage fees but you also had a flurry of mergers among the major

carriers. united and continental got tied up. southwest and airtran. us airways and america west. just to name a few but american airlines was unable to find ar partner to help it shoarld shoulder its mountain of debt. first, the reorganization could mean fewer flights which means less competition which could mean higher ticket prices for everybody! how about your frequent fliers out there. yep, you could be affected in a big way, too. the biggest risk is liquidation that american goes out of business and with it, all of the frequent flier miles vanish. that's highly unlikely. in the recent past, delta, northwest, united, all reworked under chapter 11 bankruptcy program. sometimes the miles become even more valuable. it is a way of keeping loyal customers loyal. the only guarantee to protect the miles is to redeem them.

on president obama's policies. the winner will spend about a year filling the term by joe man chun. >> a not guilty plea from rezwan ferdaus, the man plotting to fill model planes with explosives. his attorneys claim entrapment by the government. in just about 20 minutes -- about 20 minutes ago, winners for the nobel prize for physics was announced. among three splitting the prize, d.c. native adam rice. he's an astro physicist at johns hopkins. the trio won for its work on our expanding universe. this morning, the american planning association is out with its list of the greatest streets in america and among the top 10, king street in old town, alexandria. new, a look at why and what it means for our region. we're joined live by val hawkins. val is the cep of the

alexandria economic development partnership. congratulations and how are you going to celebrate? >> thank you, andrea. good morning. we're just very thrilled to be getting this award today. this afternoon at 5:00, a celebration begins down here at the base of king street from 5:00 to 6:30. at 6:00, our mayor will receive -- our mayor and city planning director will receive this tremendous award for our city. >> what about king street so impressed the apa? >> it is a wonderful, vibrant street that's been here since 1749. the work of our city over the years involving our residents, our boards and commissions, our planning staff, past and present, has just -- and just the whole community involvement and concern by our citizens and

our city folks have made this a wonderful street, a vibrant street. it is the center of commercial activity. also restaurants, merchants, retailers, all participating in this process. which brings us this award today. >> we have a few seconds. given the tough economic times, what does this distinction mean for the commonwealth and the metro region? >> well, there are two cities in virginia. one in culpepper and here in alexandria that have been recognized and one in the district. u street. and so it is just a really wonderful recognition. we're one of ten cities in america this year that have received this award and we will -- we're just so thrilled to be able to celebrate it. >> well, congratulations, again. the party is at 5:00 this evening. everybody come on down and see what king street is all about.

sunrise, 7:07. sun and clouds to start. more sun as the day wears on. winds will be a little brisk out of the northwest at 12, 13, 3:00 p.m. but these are sustained winds. gusts could be over 20. highs today between 65 and 70 which is still just a little bit below average. the average highs in the low 70s. the sun returns today. that's our big weather headline. turning milder, too. low 50s yesterday. today could be near 70 in spots. definitely need the sunglasses and warmer tomorrow. we could be talking low to mid- 70s on wednesday. look at the fog up north from frederick to westminster, a quarter mile. gotten better in hagerstown. west of hagerstown, cumberland checking in at a quarter mile as well. two and a half in gaithersburg showing some improvement over the last hour where their temperature is 45. it is 46 in leesburg. haymarket over toward gainesville in the 46, 47 mile range with 47 for fort belvoir. 49 in baden. 47 in columbia.

laurel on the chilly side at 45. national, right on the water of the potomac, 51. north-northwesterly wind at 6. partly cloudy skies. our dew points are in the 40s. once we shake the storm that's been with us for several days, there isn't much else across the middle of the country. we have to get on the west side of the rockies to see the moisture streaming northward, not eastward. we've got a block now in the upper atmosphere so the jets have been going up and over. this block is going to keep weather systems away from us for days. much like it has kept weather systems on top of us for days. we'll be on the good side of the equation. still a few showers through midmorning here in western maryland, western pennsylvania but by 2:00, notice a lot of sunshine, northwesterly wind. clearing skies tonight. tomorrow, still breezy but mostly sunny for your wednesday. and quite pleasant as temperatures shoot into the 70s. looking at the next three days, today, upper 60s. partly to mostly sunny this

moving on. game three against the rays. josh hamilton broke it open. texas beat tampa bay, 4-3. game four this afternoon. >> well, the four most valuable player awards for peyton manning definitely seem justified now. his colts are winless as manning is out indefinitely with a neck injury. colts are visiting the buccaneers for monday night football. indianapolis took the lead on curtis painter a touchdown pass. that made it 17-10. but the bucs rallied back. tied at 17. garrett ran the ball 35 yards. look at him go. tampa beat the bolts 24-17. colts are now zero and four. ouch! redskins have the weekend off which is good news for tim hightower. he has an injured shoulder following sunday's win against the rams. coach mike shanahan didn't say whether he'll be ready in two

eastern skies. cleared here in northwest and much of the immediate metro. our day planner, it is a good- looking one today. we've got a mix of sun and clouds across the region. low 60s at noon. by 5:00, 66. highs today, 65 to 70. a lot better than yesterday and the previous few days. yesterday was 53. a couple of sprinkles overnight. you'll be encountering wet streets in spots. where we've cleared, that's allowed fog to form. some of the visibilities up north, hagerstown, cumberland, oakland. even warrenton reporting half- mile visibilities. patchy fog across parts of northern virginia as well. grab a jacket and the sun shades because you'll need something to keep you warm with a temperature in frederick of 43. we're at 51 here in d.c. a good- looking seven day. >> unfortunately, i can't say that traffic is that good- looking right now. got the yellow light because we have a couple of incidents to tell you about. let's zoom into 270.

this looks fine out at gaithersburg down to the point where the lanes divide. it is going to take you about -- i would say 14 minutes or so to get through at route 80 and urbana. it is fine here heading down toward rockville. back over to the map, this time we'll zoom into 95 and the bw parkway. they're both fine heading out of laurel to the parkway. live look at colesville road where we're just getting word of an accident on the outer loop at colesville road. i looked at the map at new hampshire avenue. it is very slow heading westbound toward the accident. i don't have any lane information yet. i'll get it as soon as possible. in my next report, i'll update you on that. i do have a commuter alert for you. an update on a big road project in maryland. it is the intercounty connector also known as maryland route 200. we talked to ray feldman, the communications manager. he said the section from georgia avenue to 95 is still on track to open later this year or in early 202012 but the

icc doesn't have specifics. he said the temporary exit at route 28 will close when the rest of the highway opens. and he promised to bring us exact dates as soon as he gets them. the first section opened in february of 2011 if you remember and he's not willing to give us the success story yet. >> i was going to ask you about that. >> until the whole thing is open. they're not willing to say how it is going. if you look at the live picture in the tunnel, it looks kind of empty. >> it always looks like that. >> if you're willing to pay for it. >> i'll go out there early this morning. >> thank you, monika. this morning, amanda knox is expected to leavittly and head back to the united states. an italian court overturned her murder conviction monday four years after her roommate was found dead. >> this morning, we're hearing from the victim's family. surae chinn is live in the satellite center with more on that. >> the victim's family did hold a press conference about two hours ago in italy. let's listen in.

>> we accept the decision that was handed down yesterday and respect the court and obviously the italian justice system. we find we're now left obviously looking at this again and thinking how a decision that was so certain two years ago has been so emphatically overturned now. >> the kercher family says they feel as if they're starting from square one. while one family is coming to terms and accepting the process, "the associated press" now saying that amanda knox has boarded a plane and left italy. she's heading back home to the united states. friends of amanda knox and her seattle hometown have been anxiously awaiting her release and erupted in cheers but say it is bittersweet. >> let's not forget this is primarily a bad occasion. a young woman lost her life. and two innocent young people had a portion of their lives stolen from them. >> amanda knox broke down in tears after the jury overturned her murder conviction because

of flawed dna evidence. her ex-boyfriend was also acquitted. again, "the associated press" saying that amanda knox is heading home to seattle via london this morning. mike, andrea? >> thanks, surae live in the satellite center. "the early show" will have much more on the knox decision coming up at the top of the hour. there is a new health department report about cancer cases around maryland's fort detrick. the report finds no spike in cancer cases immediately surrounding that fort. it does show the rate certain cancers in frederick county is significantly higher than the entire state of maryland. however, this report is only based on a specific timeframe. a two-time cancer survivor attended nearby waverly elementary school. >> i sent out an e-mail response to my classmates in a five-year span and while some of them are reluctant to get involved and give names, i had

23 responses of people in my age group that had cancer that went to school in that district. >> more studies and the ground, air, and water are still being conducted. >> good news for grievers who got speed tickets. they're going to be tossed out. it is along high bridge road along high bridge elementary school. 18 people got tickets there but the camera isn't supposed to operate on weekends. an official county police blog says the tickets will be waived or drivers will be reimbursed. >> jury selection gets one and way in michigan for the man trying to blow up a plane with explosives in his underwear. prosecutors say abdul mutallab tried to blow up a northwest airlines flight between amsterdam and detroit. he supposedly confessed saying it was a suicide mission

inspired by anwar al-awlaki. honors today for the fbi from the antidefamation league. the reason, the sting which netted a man who was plotting to bomb the metro, the man thought he had joined al-qaeda. instead, it was an fbi operation. the would-be terrorist admitted the plot and is now spending 23 years in prison. jessica doyle is watching your money. >> here we go again. yet another apple device and people are really geeked up about it. >> will they or won't they. will they debut an all new iphone five or will it be a tweaked iphone four. whatever it is, apple is expected to announce a new powerful version. it has been more than a year sense the iphone four was connect off. it starts around 1:00 this afternoon. it is expected to allow texting over wi-fi. and offer a beefed up camera, e-

mail and web browsing app. the phones themselves may not be available until later this month. here is more of the news. some sprint nextel customers have been looking for. the "wall street journal" reports sprint is committed to buying more than $30 million iphones over the next four years. the paper reported sprint will sell the phones to -- it will offer the iphone with unlimited data plans. the new orleans superdome will be known as the mercedes-benz superdome. according to a report in the "usa today." the saints and the luxury carmaker are expected to announce it at a news conference later today when they host them. >> there it is. >> have to pay for all of the renovations. >> hopefully, they'll beat the colts when that announcement is made. >> they're 0-4. >> congratulations.

4:00. 8:00 temperature down in the lower 60s. brisk evening ahead. we're saying good-bye to the storm system. spinning now over new jersey. yesterday morning, it was over parts of southern maryland and the northern neck. as it pulls away behind it, the clouds are starting to break up some and the moisture is pulling away from the region. the rain is. at the lower levels, enough low level moisture. gaithersburg down to a quarter mile. quarter mile in westminster. hagerstown, oakland, even down to warrenton, they reported some fog. southern maryland, eastern shore, enough cloud, enough of a breeze that we don't really have the fog. it is in the mid-40s north. low 50s south with some pockets of 40s in southern maryland as well and to our east into prince george's county. to easton, they've dipped to 45 this morning. while national holds on to 51. the dew points, they're in the 40s. once we get some sunshine, we start to dry out. the humidity will drop. this morning, it is up at 86%. we're looking good. look at the middle of the country.

follow the clouds. along the west coast up into canada. then take a dip here. you've got this big ridge in the middle of the country. this thing is going to build in and the closest weather we have from the storm that's over us is now in the rockies with the rain moving to the north. not the east, up and over the ridge. that's going to protect us for days and days here. and i'm pretty confident that we're looking mainly sunny and mainly dry and comfortable here for the next five to seven days. we'll say good-bye to the area of low pressure this morning. we'll see a lot of breaks in the cloud cover this afternoon. breezy, too. today and tomorrow, breezy. but a lot better as we see the sunshine. that's going to warm temperatures up significantly. yesterday, 53 was all we could do. tonight, 40s and 50s under mainly clear skies. breezy on wednesday. 74, that will feel good. thursday a little bit cooler. pleasant, 67. as we head toward the weekend, looking nice friday at 70. warm again saturday and sunday. well up into the 70s.

>> monika stepping in wan update on timesaver track. >> thank you, howard. here is a live look from sky 9 on the southbound side of i-95 here at route 123. originally, the accident was in the hov lanes. it is on the shoulder. the problem is we have rubbernecking delays on the northside of i-95 past the accident scene. first of all, as you can see, all of the red cars, especially through the topside of town because of an accident that had been reported here at route 29, in fact, we're going to take a live look at university boulevard. you can expect it to look like this at route one in college park and it extends all the way around to georgia avenue before the pace improves. a little longer than normal here on the beltway. let's go back over to the maps and this time, we'll zoom in to the southside of town. on 295 earlier this morning, i was telling you about an accident near howard road and you can see how slow it is getting up toward the accident and into the southeast area. let's take a live look at the beltway south of town at route
