seen yesterday afternoon he was wearing blue pants blue sweater command post is set up in 5500 block b street in southeast. update on an accident involving a dc cab and metro bus this happened in the 3800 block 12th street northeast, police say this all started late last night when a taxi cabin spector was chasing a cab. the driver of that cab, ran a red light crashed into the bus the bus driver and five passengers were all hurt, all expected to be okay. our big story this morning defense secretary, at an official ceremony in baghdad. he is shutting down the 9 year war there. >> pentagon chief is formally retiring the flag of forces in iraq. more on the symbolic ceremony live in arlington near the pentagon good morning stacy. >> good morning. this has been a long time coming certainly president obama has been active in the

new eve -- investigation going on for more than a decade. a new search will be unvailed this morning for the potomac rapist, they will unvail a new website attacks took place in montgomery county in the early 90s ending with a murder in 1998. dc councilman harry thomas junior settling with the federal government on a big debt from his college days he owed, lewis state university $16,000 since early 80s he agreed to a plan for repaying that debt, the councilman is accused of funneling federal court -- funneling $300,000 in city money for his personal use. more tax troubles for former mayor marion barry the irs filed a lien against his home in southeast for not paying last year's income taxes. the washington times first

you know what alison i have passed this carousel a million times, never knew the rich history behind it this carousel came from baltimore, where really the civil rights movement some people say in baltimore was sparked by what happened at that park. i want to show you this book called round and round together taking a merry-go-round ride together into the civil rights movement by amy mason who is here with me the author of this book thank you for being with us. >> thank you. >> first question, how does this carousel play a role in the civil rights movement. >> august 28th, 1963, the same day as the march on washington was the first day this amusement park in baltimore maryland dropped segregation and a little girl, 11 months old she was the first african american girl to go for a ride on this merry-go-round >> now it is on the national mall where we can all ride it,.

>> yeah, you know, just a few hours after she took her ride martin luther king gave her famous i have a dream speech talking about wanting there to be a day when black children and white children would treat each other as brothers and sisters, 40 miles away sharon was riding the merry-go-round with two little white kids on either side of her having a great time there was no problem whatsoever. >> what is happen being the occupy protest and what was seen in the middle east you tie that in together, talking about the little things that can spark a movement. >> i use the story of the end of segregation at that amusement park to give an overview of the civil rights movement as a whole and over the s used nonviolent course of the nearly 10 years that it took to integrate this park and relevant to what is going on with the occupy people, they are trying to find what strategies they want to use. whey did you want to -- why

did you want to write this book? looking at you i wouldn't thing you would be interested in a story like this of course you make presungs and you are often wrong but why did you want the write this. >> i grew up in baltimore lived not far from this amusement park and didn't realize the significance of the august 28th connection between this and merry-go-round and the smithsonian i thought that is an maizing story when i found out and it gives people a way to have a personal link to that era, because when you ride this merry-go-round you know the story what it took to make this merry-go-round one that anyone could ride and gives you a chance to feel you understand a little bit about it. also riding a merry-go-round you circle round and round and get nowhere that must have been what it felt like for civil rights protestors. >> our photographer pointed that out as we were driving here and talking about this story i want to talk more about

your book which features an at the doe tall side bars. yeah, i found wonderful photos from the sun and archives that here maryland, college park and african newspapers in baltimore just wonderful archival photos not only of the protest at the amusement park but what was going on in baltimore from the is 1930s on. >> there was a lot of young people. >> that was so interesting the young people really pushed the pressure along from the 30s up to the 1960s young people leading the way. >> again the book is called round and round together taking a merry-go-round ride into the civil rights movement, author amy mason, thank you for writing such a fascinating book
