ability. we're talking about the ability to forgive, in a situation where forgiveness seems impossible. we'll introduce you to two people who have forgiven. it's part one of a two-party series on the power of forgiving. and thanksgiving means time with family but often we spend too much time in the kitchen preparing the holiday feast. we have a guest chef joining us this morning with tips on how to cut down on your kitchen time so you can enjoy family time. >> now "we" means relatives. >> what do you mean? >> nothing. >> you'll be doing all of the cooking? >> no. we have a chef doing the cooking. >> tucker, take it away. right to the weather forecast. i'll leave that one alone. rain showers out there and continuing through the day. cool as well with temperatures only in the middle 50s. hd radar showing you the rain shower activity and again right through the city here, generally south and west of the

city is where it's heaviest. and you notice toward front royal and winchester we have some embedded areas of moderate rainfall. so this will be with us throughout the day today. not going to rain all day. but i'll tell you what, it will be cloudy and cool throughout the day and we'll have periods of rain. let's open up the picture and show you the bigger satellite radar and there you go, look at that stream of moisture moving in from the south and the southwest. area of low pressure will ride up the appalachians during the course of the day today and bring us the cloud cover and the possibility of rainfall right through the evening commute. and even during the overnight hours we could hear a rumble of thunder out there. and gradually improving into tomorrow. temperatures 51 at reagan national. 50 at both dulles and in downtown baltimore. our highs later today, you're looking at them, mid-50s. kind of cool out there with cloudy skies and periods of rain. more details on the forecast. it gets better from here and then a cool-down toward the end of the week. i'll have those details in a few minutes. allison and tony, back up

stairs to you. we continue to follow a big local story. one massive corruption investigation four years in the making in prince george's county. here is what we know right now. nine people arrested yesterday, including three police officers and a well-known business owner. the charges involve smuggling across state lines and protection for drug dealers. the fbi confirms those arrests are connected to a sting that took down county executive jack johnson and his wife on friday. they are facing corruption charges. today county leadership is realing and -- reeling and more arrests are on the way. sarah simmons is covering this story this morning. >> reporter: as you say, the investments are all part of the ongoing corruption probe. they are not saying exactly how these cases are related to the jack johnson case, the arrest of jack johnson and his wife leslie last friday. but now again three prince george's county police officers have been arrested in the

corruption probe. two of the officers arrest ready sergeant richard delabrer and corporal chong kim. this started on monday morning with agents searching 11 different locations in prince george's county, including tick tock liquors in langley park. the owner amrik singe melhi and his wife and the police officers are among seven charged in the first indictment. investigators claimed the liquor store owners would pay the officers in exchange for them to ensure they transport untaxed cigarettes and alcohol in maryland and virginia. now the prince george's county police chief very upset about these allegations and calling this a disgrace to the department. >> i'm outraged at the disgraceful conduct demonstrated by three of our officers who tarnished our badge for their own greed and personal gain. >> reporter: now the third

officer in the second indictment, sin isa simic is charged with conspiracy to transport cocaine and the use of firearms for drug trafficking. all of the officers are on suspension without pay. if they are convicted they could face up to 20 years in prison. and the fbi, as you mentioned, said this could be far from over. there could be more arrests that will follow and this is an investigation, the fbi said, that dates back for more than four years. we're live here in upper marlboro, sarah simmons, back to you. >> as for the johnsons, it is business as usual. the newly elected councilwoman left her home and did not address the scandal. jack johnson did thanksgiving county residents and well- wishers for their support. he said he will finish the term spending the remainder of his time focusing on budget issues. and the man elected to take over prince george's county

rushern baker, has spoken out for the first time. baker said despite what has happened over the past few days, he wants citizens in the county to know that his administration will deliver a first-class government, one that puts people first. >> we remain focused on kitchen table issues of our residents. whether it is job growth, transit-oriented development, new business opportunities, comprehensive health care improvement, and of course a top-ranked school system. >> mr. baker did not make direct comments about the charges facing johnson and his wife. baker will be sworn in as county executive on december 6th. our corruption investigation continues on myfoxdc.com. there you'll find the latest details, a time line of the arrests and plus a look at the

charging documents. everything you need is right there on the home page. and we are following a developing story from overseas this morning. the rumors have now been put to rest. a royal wedding is in the making. >> after years of speculation, prince william is now engaged. official word came from the office of his father, prince charles. greg palka joins us live from outside of buckingham palace in london with the greatest. good morning, how excited are the people there? >> reporter: excited, excited, excited; guys, we are in front of bucking ham palace and just a short distance from where we are came the official announcement that prince william would be engaged to be married to kate middleton. and second in line to the thrown, father prince charles first in line and the son of the late princess diana. they will be married next year sometime either spring or summer. it will be happening in london. as you noted, guys, this is

long-awaited and waited and waited. in fact kate middleton got the name of waity katie. they've been together some eight years. and they've some some downs but mostly ups. apparently the big vacation was popped last month in kenyan. considering the appetite for media, this has not leaked out until they announced it. they are both 28 and well liked. her sense of style and common upbringing reminding people of diana and a bit like his father. the queen has to approve it and she did along with the duke of edinburg. and the mayor of london was delighted. my favorite reaction is from the u.k. ambassador from israel. his words -- his word, mozel to have. and 2012 is the diamond jubilee for the queen and all bets were

the chandra levy murder trial is coming to a close. lawyers are expected to present their closing arguments this morning. as expected, the defense rested without calling suspect ingmar guandique to testify. the defense did question one of his former cell mates. that man said that he never heard guandique admit to killing levy. prosecutors also dropped to more charges against guandique, attempted kidnapping and robbery. they dropped to others last week. he is still facing two murder charges. a reward is now on the table to help find the person who fired shots at several military building in the d.c. region. justice department is offering as much as $20,000 if you can lead them to the shooter. investigators have linked the bullets to a particular type of weapon but won't say what kind

of firearm that is. they've also speculated the shooter may have a connection to the par -- marine corp. a soldier from our area has died after been wounded in afghanistan. he was hit with an ied on november 8th in afghanistan. he was taken to germany to be treated but died last week of his injuries. lutz was assigned to the 101st airborne division out of ft. campbell, kentucky. he was 28 years old. a 13-year-old girl found gagged in a basement of matthew hoffman. he may have been watching her family before they vanished. the girl's mother, brother and family friend still missing. investigators will continue the search today after pulling a car and suv from a lake near hoffman's home yesterday. no word on if they are related

to the case. and a little girl from australia who disappeared from her north carolina home. czarra barker's remains were discovered last week. her mother is behind bars charged with obstruction of justice. her lawyers are arguing that her bond should be decreased because of her cooperation -- excuse me baker should be released because of her cooperation with police. now baker went with police to three sites that she said contained her stepdaughter's remains. in connecticut, one couple is reliving the nightmare of their son's death. the man convicted of hitting and killing the boy is now suing them. david weaving is serving a 10 year sentence for hitting matthew kenny with his car. and now weaving is blaming parents for not requiring their son to wear a helmet to wear his bike. he is suing them for $15,000 in damages. this morning we are taking a closer look at forgiveness,

an act many don't take lightly. >> but some who experience terrible, life-changing events have made the decision to forgive even when outside observers didn't see how it was possible to do that. kim carver gives two outlooks on forgiveness. >> reporter: in a split-second your life can change forever. maybe it's happened to you, maybe it hasn't. it has happened to mark cronin. >> i remember driving the motorcycle. i remember the headlights coming at me and not having a chance to react and get out of the way quick enough. and i just remember blood pouring out of me and saying my leg. >> reporter: the day after being struck by a drunk driver traveling the wrong way on the highway, mark woke up in a hospital bed. >> i kept tapping down to my leg. i didn't know if it was gone or not. and i couldn't speak because i had a tube in me and my wife

let me know my leg was gone. >> reporter: and this girl's life changes just as quickly. >> i was on the porch with my sister and then you could hear it sounded like fire crackers but it wasn't the 4th of july. >> reporter: the gun shots that she heard were the result of an argument in a first floor apartment, a stray bullet hit the then 3-year-old. her mother recalls that night at the hospital. >> she was laying in like a trauma room. i looked at the x-ray and i couldn't really read it but i could see a bullet. it had severed her spinal cord 99.7%. >> reporter: that shot fired by this man leave her paralyzed. [ music ] ♪ >> kye, tanya and mark made the choice to forgive and their acts of compassion played out in courtrooms for the world to see. >> i know you're sorry.

i really do. i wish we could turn time back but we can't. i lost my leg, my family lost a lot and i know your family is a good family and have lost a lot too. what i do in my life will reflect on my three small children and i do have forgiveness for you and i wish there was something we could do and i hope in the future we can get together and talk to young kids about drunk driving. >> i could never -- until you are in the situation, i don't know what you can do and can't do. it made is easier knowing he was sorry. it was easier to forgive. as long as i can be here for my kids and still walk them down the aisle. i won't be as active but i'll still be there to see them. that is huge for me. if this is my son or daughter, i might have a different attitude. i don't know. i don't foe how i would react. >> reporter: kylie won't walk down the aisle and her mother knows what it feels like to see

her daughter robbed of so much. but she found it in her heart to forgive and did it before she reached the hospital. >> i don't know why i did, but i believed she would live and not die if i forgave, if we forgave. >> reporter: the impact statement is a reflection of that decision. >> [ inaudible ] >> the courtroom, that was a heavy day that day. >> and i was angry and me and my family were angry at him. i guess he was shocked because he probably thought oh, i'll just do the time in prison and then i'll get out. but he probably took that time and said, it's nice to be given another chance. >> it's reformed our lives in

one millisecond and i wanted him to realize that this forgiveness that you received, take it even one step further and forgive yourself so that you can be effective in telling this story to others and it will change their lives because it's like a domino effect. the power of forgiveness is when you release the unforgiveness, the healing begins. >> well kye's mother tanya david has started an organization to promote forgivenessch the motto is the quality of life that you live each and every day is determined by the choices you are willing to make. tomorrow at this time part two of kim's report and she looks at the healing power of forgiveness and the impact one decision's to give can have on the physical and mental well being. we want to know about your experience with forgiveness. post a comment on our facebook

a fox 5 follow-up on the cholera epidemic in haiti. health officials expect the outbreak could grow to hundreds of thousands. there are protests and there are reports that two people were killed and six more hurt in two separate incidents. rescue workers continue to pull survivors from the deadly building collapse in new delhi, india. 65 people are confirmed killed and dozens more injured. hundreds of people, most migrant workers and families, lived in the building. investigators suspect monsoon rain weakened the building. a missing strike in pakistan is now up to 20, the

what grant said, i think the contract was given by daniel snyder. i think if shanahan said no, you can't do this, then it probably wouldn't have happened because shanahan does have complete control. but i think kyle shanahan probably would not have wanted this to happen. he and mcnabb have had conflicting issues and had a dicey relationship on how they handle each other. but i think dan snyder wanted to do this. mcnabb is a really, really good guy to put as the face of this franchise. there is no other quarterback they have right now and he gave him $40 million. think of what he gave albert haynesworth and mcnabb is a guy respected throughout the league. albert haynesworth is not. >> could the game have played out any worse after the contract. they did this for a reason. it was a good p.r. move, monday night football and here comes the old team the

and gaithersburg. winchester and front royal have had good rain and light showers inside the beltway. to the east toward prince george's county, out towards anne arundel county, annapolis, severna park, lighter shower activity. but that doesn't mean we're done with it yet. rain continues to stream in from the south and west and will be with us on and off throughout the day today. let's push on to satellite radar and i'll show you the bigger picture here and off to the south and west there is the rain shower activity. i speak of it. and when i open it up, you'll see the area of low pressure and the associated showers and even thunderstorms are further to the south, down into the deep south. and this will travel up the appalachian and push into the washington area. so clouds with us today. and even the possibility later this afternoon to get a frontal system during the nighttime hours. we could hear a few rumbles of thunder and get gusty winds during the nighttime hours. so look out for that later tonight. let's go to the future-cast and show you we are modeling the

so you want to decorate for the holidays, but you don't want to spend a whole lot of money. >> well fox 5's holly morris is at joann fabrics and craft this is morning where sher learning thanksgiving projects you can do with your family are on the cheap. holly? >> reporter: there are a lot of great ideas here. and the thing that is fun about this is everything is better when it's homemade. so this is something you can do where -- with your family to gear up for the holiday and things to do when you are in the food coma. sandy sandler behind the bodabra is here to help us because she is the creator of all things easy and cheap. so start off with this. >> so we took a candy jar and

fill it with candy or bubble gum or whatever and fill it with fabric and use pinking sheers to cut it and screw the top on and put a bow in front of it and that makes a great little hostess gift. >> and that's a good use of small little pieces of scrap fabric that you have. and that's what we do here. and this is just a crafting cork and we took again the pipe cleaners and we just put a little picture here. and this is a fun thing to do where you take a picture at thanksgiving dinner and then the following year you use the pictures. >> reporter: oh, that's fun. because then it becomes a recurring thing every year. >> and then i love repurposing so you take your pumpkins from halloween and decorate them up with a little paint and it's really easy. someone had said, oh, i'm not artistic. well these are lines. a line this way and this way and you're done. >> reporter: and you get your kids, if you are doing this ahead of time, involved in the

tradition of the holiday. >> absolutely. and it's so -- and they feel proud that they were able to participate. now what we have here is just a cute -- we took a terracotta pot and the foam and glued it on here and these are just crafts and we just put the foam on the front of that and then you just stick your little feathers in the back of the turkey. >> reporter: and none of this is expensive. and you can get this at a craft store like joann's and it's on the cheap. >> very inexpensive. >> reporter: and people will be impressed. >> and then your kids will have fun. supplies at home. >> i love foam because you can -- it's almost like construction paper but thicker and it cuts really easy. and that's what we used here. it's fun to use and we just -- here that's what we use on the turkey, we just put it around here and that's what we use for the spoon. >> and i find when you buy things for certain projects you have leftovers. when you have a bunch of left overs, you become more creative. >> and look at what they are doing here. and this hasn't been just for tv. they've been expanding here in between -- standing here in between segments and coloring. >> reporter: this shows you are never too old to color. and this is great you punch a hole in the construction paper and then color the indian corn there. >> right. exactly. now this is really -- over here we have -- this is such a great way to decorate your table or your decor. this is a fake gord but you can use real ones and take your tea

star burns up and explodes, becoming a supernova. it falls in on itself creating a gravitational force so strong each light can't escape, hence the name black hole. >> we want to watch how this system evolves and changes in the useful stages from when it's first born to when it go news a child and teenager and gets older. >> reporter: many experts believe it formed when a star 20 times more massive than the sun collapsed. >> when we say it's 30 years ago, it means that's when we saw it. now the galaxy is 50 million light years away, so in its own frame of reference it occurred 50 million years ago. >> reporter: when it comes to black holes, 30 years old is considered young and this one, which is an estimated 50
