devastating flames rip through a local home. brand-new video of a story we've been following all morning long. we're learning now who was inside that home. >> cloudy morning, we're starting to see a few peeks of sunshine in the washington area. how much sunshine is ahead? the forecast in minutes. back in court. watching a baltimore courtroom where the fate of six officers is up for discussion. and all eyes are on las vegas where just hours from now it will be the democrats opportunity to square off.

i'm eun yang, news4 midday starts right now. i'm megan fitzgerald in reston where fire broke out at about 6:40 this morning at this townhouse behind me on purple sage court. in fairfax county firefighters arrived on scene and say they saw flames shooting out of the first floor window that is boarded up. they had to rescue a couple that were upstairs. we're told who dogs and two cats lived inside, unfortunately they did not make it out alive. investigators tell us this all happened at around 6:40 this morning. they say that this home video was shot by a neighbor, his name is james moran. he said he woke up to sirens, came outside and saw several fire engines on scene battling the blaze. fairfax county fire official says it took about 40 firefighters nearly an hour to extinguish the flames. moran says he didn't realize anyone was inside until he saw crews walking up the ladder to

the second floor of the home. >> down the ladder, got him on a stretcher, they put him in an ambulance, took him over to reston hospital. >> now, fire officials tell us that the couple was rushed to a local hospital here. one of them went into cardiac arrest. but was then revived shortly after they were airlifted to washington medical center. but their condition is unknown. fire investigators tell us the cause of the fire sunday investigation. barbara. >> thank you. a person is dead after being hit by a car in the district. d.c. police say the driver took off after hitting the person on sargent road this morning. as for the car, witnesses say they saw a dark-colored suv leaving the scene. that car was last seen heading south on south dakota avenue northeast. developing out of baltimore, the pre-trial hearing for the officers in the freddie gray

case is underway. just short time ago prosecutors played a tape recording from one of the officers and says she was not threatened or ordered to give a statement. it is those statements that are the focus point of today's hearing. statements that the officers want thrown out because they say they were improperly obtained. officers charged in the death of gray include caesar nero, alici. the first of six trials is set to begin at the end of next month. look for more on this story on our nbc washington app. chuck? >> thanks. your storm team 4 forecast has been carrying a chance for rain showers throughout the morning but the rain is coming to an end. not completely done but most of the rain has fallen. breeze will start to increase later this afternoon behind a cold front. another cold front promises a

be on the stage tonight is vice president joe biden. he has not said whether he will run for president. the wait for biden's announcement is starting to wear thin on some supporters. political analysts say sitting out the first debate could be a strategic move on the vice president's part. >> a report from the dutch safety board came out this morning about the crash of malaysia airlines flight mh 17. nearly 300 people were on board and died. the report said the bustle that took the plane down was russian made and that it came from an area of rebel separatists controlled. the dutch safety board also said the plane that should have never been in that airspace. a man is in critical condition after a d.c. police officer ran into him. a 23-year-old woman says it was one of the most horrible things she's ever seen. she says the police cruiser's side mirror clipped a man in the

crosswalk downtown yesterday evening. she said she watched the man enter the crosswalk after making the decision herself she didn't have enough time to make it. right now a firefighter is due out of the hospital in kansas city. four firefighters were trapped in this huge fire in an apartment building last night. look at the flames here. the building collapsed. two firefighters died. you can see just how intense this fire was. the kansas city fire department said it was still putting out hot spots today. did police use excessive force on an elected official? this morning new video shows a tasing incident that has a lot of people outraged. and shut down. the two high profile accounts that twitter suspended.

angle of the confrontation that led police to use a taser on a prairie view city councilman. this is dash cam video. it's one of four videos the district attorney is looking at to see if officers used excessive force. officers tased the 26-year-old councilman after he followed instructions to get on his knees but did not put his hands up as ordered. at the time officers were questioning some of his friends in front of his apartment complex. the police department says it stands behind its officers. a school is closed in prince george's county. this morning we learn what started a fire. an overheated motor in a fan caught fire. the department did not say how much damage it causeded. backlash over the suspension of two twitter accounts. you're looking at deadspin's twitter page which was reactivated last night.

deadspin and sp nation both had accounts suspended after complaints from the nfl, sec and big 12. they say the site violated copyright rules because they had clips of games. for the first time thousands of cue soon have paid sick days where the issue comes

welcome back. tracking a few light rain showers here in northeastern maryland. breaks of sunshine are working their way into the western suburbs. a few breaks of sun here in northwest washington. we can't rule out a shower or two. hit and miss light rain chances until about 1:00, 2:00. later today, again, after 3:00,

4:00, could be a few more showers. rainfall amounts are only going to be a couple hundredths of an inch. have your little umbrella with you to make sure you can stay dry in case a spot shower finds its way over your house or your plans. temperatures will make it up to the mid 70s. cooler weather tomorrow. more about that when i see you next. a former redskins coach says he is ending his career. today is steve spurrier's first day of retirement. he said yesterday he was stepping down as coach of the south carolina football team. spurrier coached the gamecocks for the last 11 years and was head coach of the redskins for two seasons in 2002 and 23. today prince george's county leaders are expected to vote to extend benefits force thousands of county employees if it passes, workers could be eligible for as many as seven days of paid sick leave. the bill would help more than 130,000 employees in the private sector. right now they risk losing money or even their jobs if they take too many sick days off. the bill may put pressure on

state lawmakers to pass a similar measure. it faces a backlash from business owners. if the bill passes, the full council will consider the measure later. get ready for what could be the next supreme court case.

case. his ex-girlfriend took the stand a short time ago. he lived with her when police started investigating him for the murders. julie carey is in the courtroom. she is reporting that a ford motor company employee testified earlier about the car prosecutors say was his getaway car after muthe music teacher w shot and killed. a witness told the court that she learned severance wasn't a normal person and didn't feel safe after meeting him. she says she hosted the accused killer and said at one point he snapped and was out of control talking about losing custody of his young son. we're getting more information from his ex-girlfriend, linda robra. she apparently is telling the courtroom that severance told her that alexandria police came in through a window and took his son when the boy was 14 months

old. his ex also saying that he was not fond of the court system. and says any time that there were police officers shot, he would think that was a good thing. severance is charged with three alexandria murders. follow julie carey on twitter for constant updates on the case. today the supreme court will hear arguments on gun control. the high court will consider challenging a chicago law that bans assault weapons. the case comes at a time of renewed interest in gun regulations after recent mass shootings. the court will hear arguments on banning automatic sentences for teens. getting to and from leesburg is about to get easier. the attorney general is with loudoun county leaders and vdot to break the ground on a series of projects. they will announce a plan to expand belmont ridge road and an

overpass over route 7 to alleviate traffic problems. belmont ridge road will be expanded to four lanes between route and gloucester parkway. hundreds of closures and hundreds of people still can't go home in south carolina now. governor nikki haley says the state is in a massive recovery mission following last week's deadly floods. 19 people died. a canal to provide fresh water to people in the capital is under meticulous repairs. it's not clear how long it will take for the carolinas to totally recover. the governor said fema approved more than $13 million of disaster assistance to help them rite now. emergency response teams from our area are awaiting their next assignment. these are photos from virginia task force once. they're the elite team in the fairfax county fire and rescue department. they said the damage recovery and rescues were important but it's good to be home. >> the devastation was

tianjin. we are told no one was hurt this time. you can see when an alcohol warehouse goes up into flames. a separate explosion in tianjin left 173 people dead or missing. emergency responders said this time everything is stable. name a beer, any beer? if a new agreement goes through, chances are a single company will have brewed that beer. anheuser busch inbev agreed to buy sabmiller for $102 million. if the deal is approved, it would mean a single company would make one of every three beers sold around the world. it is a story that could have ended a lot worse. a 2-year-old in south carolina accidentally shot his grandmother. the grandmother survived. the toddler was riding in the back see the when he found a gun

mostly cloudy sky overhead. most of the rain is in northeastern maryland, southeastern pennsylvania, moving away from us. with the cold front back to the west, there could be a quick passing shower later this afternoon. temperatures should spike up to the mid 70s this afternoon before trending back down to the 60s. turning breezier later today as well. here's the way the next seven days looks. a chance for a quick shower today. breezy and cooler for tomorrow, thursday, plenty of sunshine. another cold front comes by with very little moisture. on the backside of it, way colder weather. as we head into the weekend, temperatures could be ten degrees or more colder than average. fire season is not over yet in idaho. this fire scorched more than 3,000 acres since the weekend.

this fire is burning in boise county. it is moving too fast for firefighters to get a handle on the flames. they say big flames this late in the year can be hard to fight because much of the summer crews have left for the year. people are talk about this one. a woman faces charges after she live streamed her drunk drive home over the weekend. >> i feel like i'm not driving straight, but i should be. because i am -- i am pretty drunk. >> i mean, what more can you say? shaking my head over this one. 23-year-old whitney beall received a dui on friday night thankses to 911 calls and people watching on the periscope app. police pulled her over within minutes, gave her a breathalyzer test. when she was pulled over, she had a flat tire and didn't know where she was. right now on news4 midday,

right now, the six baltimore police officers charged in connection with the death of freddie gray are all in court. five officers want statements to be inadmissible. the defense argues those statements were inproperly obtained. prosecutors played a tape recording of one officer's statement and said she was not forced to make a statement. gray died back in april. tonight is the first democratic presidential debate. five candidates will take the stage, hillary clinton, bernie sanders, martin o'malley, lincoln chafee and jim webb. sanders is expected to go after hillary clinton's stance on key issues. the less well known candidates will be looking to capture voter attention. and a fire in wereston injud two people this morning. >> we have more information on what's happening.

megan? >> fairfax county firefighters arrived on scene and saw flames shooting out of this first floor window. they realized there were two people trapped inside. they were able to rescue those adults but the four animals died on scene. we talked to a neighbor who captured the entire rescue on camera. >> reporter: neighbor's say purple sage court is usually quiet. >> it's a very quiet neighborhood. >> reporter: on tuesday morning when they heard loud sirens, they instantly knew something was wrong. >> i heard the fire engines as you hear down at the intersection. >> reporter: james moran ran outside and started shooting this home video. fairfax county fire officials say it took around 40 firefighters nearly an hour to extinguish the blaze. moments after they arrived, they realized people were trapped inside. >> young couple, early 20s, lived here for a couple years.

>> reporter: you can see firefighters walking up the ladder, breaking the top floor windows and climbing inside to rescue the couple. >> they got him down the ladder, put him on a stretcher and in an ambulance. >> reporter: the couple was rushed to the hospital before being airlifted to washington medical center. investigators believe the fire started on the first floor, but spent hours on scene investigating while neighbors looked on. >> i hope he's okay. i hope they're both okay. >> we don't know the extent of injuries but they suffered from smoke inhalation and some respiratory issues. as far as the cause of this fire, investigators tell us it's still under investigation. meagan fitzgerald, news 4. >> i'm storm team 4 meteorologist chuck bell. you're sitting at your desk, making your plans, where you'll go for lunch, will you walk or drive? here's what you can expect. plenty of clouds, very few rain showers for the next hour or two

you can probably get away without the umbrella. you could see a few more showers after that. after 4:00, 5:00 today, the wind will increase out of the north and west. until that front goes by, we'll have a slim chance for a few more pop-up showers. all the rain has temporarily left the area. again, future weather shows an opportunity for a hit and miss sprinkle or shower primarily after 3:00 or 4:00 this afternoon from washington southbound to southern maryland. don't stray too far from that umbrella. now to a developing story out of kansas city where firefighters are still putting out hot spots of a fire that killed two firefighters. the kansas city fire chief wrapping up a press conference. he said their department lost a 17-year veteran and a firefighter who served for 13 years. this after four got trapped in a building that partially collapsed in the flames.

with high temperatures around 60. sunday, a chance of frost west of d.c. and a killing freeze out towards the shenandoah valley. right now, in the trial of suspected serial killer charles severance, we are hearing from his ex-girlfriend who lived with him starting in 2011. she testified that he told her the only good cop is a dead cop. also she said severance asked her to buy him a handgun, the same weapon used in the murders of the three victims. julie carey is in the courtroom. follow her on twitter for live updates. the state department is calling for iran to release jason rezaian right now. he is a "washington post" reporter. he's been detained in iran for more than a year. the state department says it has not confirmed report that was convicted of anything. iran tv reported yesterday that he was convicted and could face 20 years in prison. it's not clear what he was
