on a new program to get a good night's sleep. ♪ yeah, he's at it again. we'll tell you what got president obama into the singing mood tonight. i'm wendy rieger. something wonderful is about to emerge on the national mall. i'll show it to you in just a few minutes. we begin tonight with a sketch, the best clue the police have to find a man who attacked a 10-year-old girl on the way home from school. shomari stone spoke exclusively to the victim's mother tonight. >> i just -- i'm so -- it's just sickening. that somebody could do this. >> reporter: this mother who we won't identify breaks down in tears in an exclusive interview. and police say the man shown in this police sketch sexually assaulted her 10-year-old daughter. >> i'm mad, very mad. angry. sick.

this man is apparently in his mid-30s. i can't imagine what would make someone do that to a child. >> reporter: police say her child walked home from lakeshore elementary school on maryland road last tuesday between 3:00 and 3:30 in the afternoon. her mother told me she was with her friends. but they ran ahead of her. suddenly, police told us a man grabbed the girl and pulled her into a wooded area a quarter of a mile from the school. >> for him to pull her in the woods in the broad daylight and hold her down, he threatened to kill her. >> reporter: police are on the hunt. our camera captured them tonight doing patrols in the neighborhood. >> it makes me sick. i don't want it to happen to anybody else. >> reporter: investigators passed out flyers like this one right here at businesses and homes in the area. they urge anyone with information about this to call the arundel county police

department. a big development involving gay marriage in maryland. a senate committee gave the bill a green light, clearing the way for a full senate both by the end of this week. supporters say the votes are there to pass it. the governor says he'll sign it. in the district tonight, a man taking on those expensive speed camera tickets and doing at this time same way angry customers managed to get bank of america and verizon to drop their proposed fee. mark mueller started an online petition asking city leaders to lower the fine, fueled by the four $125 tickets he got while speeding. >> i can't understand how they justify $125. show me unbiased statistic that is show me that it does produce safety and why $125 is the mark. >> d.c. police defend the speed camera programs. a spokeswoman tells us a person hit by a car going 30 miles an

hour has an 80% chance of living. but if they're hit by a car going 40, there's an 80% chance they'll die. right now, we're all paying about 20 cents more for a gallon of gas than we did just last month. the question might be what's being done to stop the rising pricing. president obama is expected to address the issue when he goes to florida on thursday. experts point out the last five times gas prices spiked heading into a presidential election, the incumbent lost the white house. franklin graham is in the middle of a firestorm tonight after controversial comments about the president and christianity. the reverend billy graham's son said he could not answer whether president obama is a christian. he said the president has told him he is but he can't say for sure. franklin graham did say he believed both rick santorum and newt gingrich were christians. after being pressed about president obama, here's what

graham said -- >> president obama, the muslims of the world -- he seems to be more concerned about them than the christians that are being murdered in the muslim countries. that's what bothers me. >> for mitt romney, graham said most christians would not recognize mormonism. but he believes romney would be a good president if he got the nominati nomination. it will be the first museum on the mall in years. wendy rieger joins us now. wendy? >> reporter: vance, this is going to be so cool. you have to get this on your radar. the groundbreaking is tomorrow. this is the tent where they're going to have president obama, former first lady laura bush and all the dig tenitaries will be e tomorrow morning. it's right in the shadow of the washington monument. but, boy, oh, boy, when this thing is done, it is going to be something to see.

thanks to the designer, this wonderful guy, david oji is this wonderful architect. he's a rock star architect. born in tanzania. he was the son of a diplomat. traveled all over the world. was educated in london. he is such a rock star. they call him a starchitect. he took the roots and his inspiration from a tribe in west africa. most of the slaves that came to this country hundreds of years ago came from this tribe. they say all the african-americans are descend t descendants of this tribe. he's basing this amazing building on the tribe's sculptures of the late 19th century. it's going to be a work of art here in washington. it's going to be the first green building that the smithsonian has built. it will be the groundbreaking tomorrow.

it will open in 2015. watch this thing rise. back to you. >> thanks, wendy. it could take ten years to complete repairs on the earthquake-damaged national cathedral. the fix is not a fast process. in some cases, stone masons are having to repair pieces. tomorrow, english will become the official language of frederick county, maryland. county commissioners passed the ordinance just a short time ago tonight after a two-hour public hearing. the move means all official actions by the county will be in english only. there are a few exceptions, such as debt collection, as well as public health and safety. cursing is now banned at d.c. council meetings. the new code of conduct passed unanimously and without discussion. the vote comes days after a fierce public outburst. a councilman threw out the "f"

word in a rant. new information about a deadly crash at a landover kfc restaurant. investigators estimate that 29-year-old hellena smith reached the speed of 100 miles an hour before she lost control of her car and slammed into the restaurant. she died on the scene. a search of online court records show that had smith had previous traffic violations, including a ticket she received just last month for driving 91 miles an hour in a 55-mile-an-hour zone. getting a good night's sleep as a new parent can be challenging. for single parents, it can be almost impossible at times. but a new group is stepping in to help and one of the first single moms they're helping is the widow of a d.c. police officer who died in the line of duty. angie goff reports. >> reporter: he lights up his mother's life with a smile that brings shawna both happiness and hurt. >> he has the same big blue eyes that my husband had.

i still feel like i have a piece of him with me. i miss him very much. >> reporter: shawna was eight days pregnant with her son, alex, when her husband, a d.c. police officer, died in a crash while responding to a call. shawna lost the love of her life and soon became a single mom. >> it's hard because having a new baby is such a joyous thing and just mixed with the horrible sadness of my husband's death, it was very hard. >> reporter: little did shawna know that in the middle of mixed emotions a blessing would emerge. "let mommy sleep," a local organization that helps new moms reached out, giving shawna relief and putting the little guy on the right path of some much-needed rest. >> a nurse is going to come stay with me and help me get him to sleep through the night. >> reporter: denise stern founded mission sleep and hopes to help more moms like shawna in the area. >> we would like to make that transition from hospital to home a little bit easier on these moms who are single moms. >> reporter: stern says the

it's something a lot of parents try to track carefully, the amount of sugar their children are eating. but if you look for that information on baby formula labels, you're not going to find it.

>> reporter: the math that starts at breakfast can continue throughout your day. it's easy to spot where sugar is in our diet. but there's one place where sugar content is not listed. and many argue it's the most critical food of all. >> we looked at all the formulas in the grocery store, even the store brand ones. and none of them listed the sugar grams per serving. >> reporter: this new grandmother says she didn't believe her eyes when she couldn't find a sugar amount listed on baby kimberly's formula. >> i called the company and i said, how many grams of sugar per serving are in your baby formula? and they told me, ma'am, we don't add sugars to our baby formulas. >> reporter: she wasn't buying that answer. >> why doesn't it list the grams of sugar? >> reporter: her question brought us here into an independent lab with seven popular baby formulas we bought for testing. >> about five grams of sample. >> reporter: scientists did a

sugar profile on each sample testing for five types of sugar. enfamil and parent's choice had the highest sugar content, 13.5 and 12.4 grams per serving. a significant amount but the best type of sugar. three tested low, gerber, similac contained one of the sweetest kind, measuring in at 3.5 grams of sugar per serving. the soy formula with iron contained four different added sugars. roughly the equivalent of one teaspoon of sugar every five ounces. in europe, concern over childhood obesity led to a ban

on sucrose in baby formula. >> we're conditioning them to crave sweetness. >> reporter: while the number of sugar grams may be low, teed -- this dentist says the impact on babies is huge. >> they're conditioned to like super sweet and their fat cells are saying, more please. >> reporter: some of the formulas, so sweet tasting, boyd calls them baby milkshakes, a major factor, he believes, in her country's battle with childhood obesity. >> if a child makes too many fat cell, they never go away. >> if we're raising our babies on sugar in the baby bottle, they're destined to become overweight. i don't want to see that happen to her. >> reporter: while the food and drug administration does regulate many aspects of formula, it does not require makers to list specific carbohydrate or sugar amounts.

the agency is also silent when it comes to how much sugar is allowed. the makers of enfamil and parent's choice say they don't include sucrose because they're not found in breast milk. the international council said sucrose has been shown to be safe in both clinical trials and years of consumer use. >> that was lisa parker reporting. ♪ same old place ♪ sweet home chicago at the white house tonight, somebody must have said the blues is all right. b.b. king staying there at the white house with the president. taking part in the celebration of the blues for black history month. the president saluted the art form. tonight also included performances by trumbone, shorty and mick jagger.

>> quite a party. i know. that would have been fun to be there. >> toughest job in the world. but sometimes it works out okay. >> sometimes you get to go to a good one. nothing blue about our weather, huh? >> no. unless you're one of those snow lovers that just continues to say, where's the snow, where's the snow? i continue to say, it's nowhere near anywhere that you live. right now, it's northern canada. that's as close as we can go. i'm not even kidding about that. out there right now, we're looking at plenty of warm weather. believe it or not you walk outside tonight, a lot warmer than it was last night. many areas last night were already in the 20s. 50 degrees the high temperature across the area today with a low of 32 this morning. we started off chilly but then we did see some sunshine in the afternoon. we warmed up nicely. but a big warm-up is on the way across the area. out there right now, 44 degrees. winds out of the south, southwest at 9 miles an hour. it's that southerly component that's going to help to keep temperatures up tonight.

last night, manassas was at 28 degrees. 15 degrees cooler than where we are right now. 48 in fredericksburg. a little bit on the cool side there. as we make our way across the area, here's the one frontal boundary here. there's another little system and yet another one just off to the west. we'll continue to watch these little systems come on through the area and with that, they're going to actually bring some very warm temperatures. they're dragging this air up from the south. right now the air to the south is warm. 62 in atlanta. 72 in jackson, mississippi. a lot of that warm air will come in here. this area is going to get really warm and we are going to see temperatures about 20 degrees warmer than where we were during the day today. there's front number one. here comes little storm number two during the day tomorrow and into the day on wednesday. ahead of that, nice, warm air. on wednesday, temperatures into the upper 50s, low 60s in many locations with plenty of sunshine early.

but then more clouds in the afternoon. some shower activity overnight tomorrow night. we'll see rain overnight tomorrow night but clearing out on thursday ahead of yet another system. i think we get near 70 on the day on thursday. this morning, 32 to 37 when you wake up and walk out the door. tomorrow afternoon, turning mostly cloudy. breezy but mild, 55 to 62. winds out of the southwest, 10 to 20 miles per hour. they could gust a little bit more. as we look through the day thursday and friday, still on the windy side. 30% chance of a friday. chance of showers on friday. but this storm earlier looked a little bit bigger. now etc. looks a little bit smaller. 60 degrees on friday. 49 on saturday. either way, still going to bring in cooler air for saturday and sunday. the weekend looking cool. but if we can get some sunshine, not a bad weekend at all for late february. >> looking pretty good. thank you, doug. we know about fat tuesday
