new chevy tahoe earlier this morning. federal authorities are investigating thomas for allegedly taking $300,000 in city grant funds and spending them lavishly on himself. the grand money was intended for youth sports and other community activities. thomas has denied wrongdoing, but he has agreed to repay the $300,000 to the city. again, the agents are still inside. some have left. some have gone. boxes have been stataken away. cars have been taken away. no one has come out to officially say what is going on, nor has thomas' lawyer come out to talk to us. we're still waiting to see what happens. this has been a day-long event. started about 8:00 this morning. still going on. >> tom, we hear other members on the council are calling for a meeting right now. this is a behind closed doors meeting. what do we know about this?

>> reporter: yes, a meeting was called to discuss a personnel matter. they were to meet at the wilson building at 14th and pennsylvania avenue. they have to go to a meeting. they have to vote to close the meeting. they all have to have a vote there. they have to have a majority vote. they'll go behind closed doors to discuss what is going on here today. there is some indication that maybe the council will remove councilmember thomas from the ethics committee, the government operations committee, which is re-writing the city's ethics bill right now. there's a meeting scheduled for monday to re-write this new ethics bill. maybe they don't want councilmember thomas to be a part of that while this investigation is going on here. >> all right. tom, thank you so much. the family and friends of a local man are gravely concerned over news that he may now be held captive by al qaeda. warren weinstein was captured in

afghanistan. there was no claim of responsibility until yesterday. one terror leader posted a message claiming that weinstein was kidnapped by al qaeda. there was also a lengthy list of demands to be met in exchange for his release. >> all he did was do good work in helping people develop things in pakistan to make the people's lives happier. >> warren is a former aid worker. he had been working in pakistan for a u.s. company that handles projects in companies with emerging economies. the once in a decade wind storm that ripped through the west coast is finally calmed down today. it left behind serious damage that's still impacting thousands of residents. it looks like there will be more wicked weather on the way. gina kim has the latest. >> reporter: thousands are still without power, and many streets, school, and businesses remain closed in southern california today. >> this is one of the worst wind

storms in a generation. >> reporter: the worst in at least a decade, according to the national weather service, which reported hurricane-grade gusts of 97 miles an hour blasting through the los angeles area at the height of the storm. >> i ask for a continued patience on the part of angelenos as we recover from what has been an incredible display of the power of mother nature. >> reporter: the result is this, a dozen homes are red tagged in pasadena. millions of dollars of property destroyed. griffith park, home to the hollywood sign, shut down. the same storm slammed new mexico, and in northern california blew down chunks of the bay area. >> it sounded almost like a hurricane. i've lived here all my life. i was amazed from all the stuff that was flying last night. >> reporter: today brought calm but temporarily. weathercasters predict another fierce wind storm to sweep through southern california this weekend.

gina kim, nbc news, los angeles. taking a live look outside right now here. the big story for our area, still the cold. >> storm 4 meteorologist veronica johnson has the details. so veronica, it's been chilly today. what's coming up? >> it's been pretty chilly today, but did you like the sunshine? guys, a lot of tweets i've been reading today. folks saying they love today. the fact i can get by without a coat. that is nice because it's winter, right? it's winter. you're going out to get the tree. well, you expect to be all bundled up. we're doing just fine today. we talked about those winds out on the west coast, the santa ana winds. i saw an official report overnight. a wind gust of 167 miles per hour. those winds out west, at least for today, really calming down as you've heard. let's talk about what's happening with that weather system. it's making its way eastward. for us, though, today awfully, awfully quiet.

you can see some high clouds. we remain in the clear here. that means that we've got a clear night coming our way. 54 degrees is where we are right now after a great friday evening. it's going to be chilly here. temperatures will be dropping from the 50s down to the 40s. we're at 54 degrees. down around stafford, 43 degrees. maybe you got by without the coat today. you won't be able to get by without a coat for the evening. we'll look at the weekend forecast. could be a busy weekend coming our way. i'll tell you why in a couple minutes. >> all right. thanks, veronica. after a blockbuster thursday on wall street, stocks didn't do a whole lot today. the dow was basically unchanged. the nasdaq basically unchanged. up less than a point. the s&p closed down less tan a point. friday ended on a flat note after positive gains through most of the week. investors chose not to rally

despite the good economic news that unemployment fell to 8.6%, which is the lowest rate its been in two and a half years. according to that report, many of the new jobs are coming from small businesses. here's steve with more on that. >> reporter: gearing up for dinner at boundary stone in d.c. it's a new place. 24 new jobs for cooks and waiters. the boss is excited. >> obviously, a good, healthy national economy is beneficial for big business, small business, any business. that definitely adds to our optimism. >> reporter: this restaurant is part of a trend. because of hiring by startups and smaller firms, our nation added 120,000 jobs last month. >> it feels like we're starting to get small businesses kicking in. that's so vital to getting the job market moving forward. >> reporter: the unemployment rate stuck around 9 dropped to 8.6%.

president obama celebrated. >> the american economy has now created, in the private sector, jobs for the past 21 months in a row. that's nearly 3 million new jobs in all. >> reporter: but people have given up looking up for work were not counted. republicans still say the president has failed. >> the american people want action on jobs. they want it now. >> reporter: president obama and clinton argued today for middle class tax cuts and a stimulus paid for by a tax hike on the rich. competing visions of how to get the nation hiring more workers, like boundary stone restaurant is. up here in congress, that competition between democrats and republicans on jobs and taxes has stalled action on the payroll tax cut. i'm steve handlesman, news 4, capitol hill. d.c. mayor vincent gray is in new york today trying to get more tv shows filmed here in the

district. the mayor will spend some time courting tv producers. he's proposed a tax on movie theater concessions as a way to help build a film incentives fund. in the past, some industry officials have said it's too difficult to film here between capitol hill, the national park service, and the district. movie makers have to work with three different agencies to just get the permits. metro will start using new mobile patrols to crack down on crime in garages starting next week. you might see a metro transit employee on one of these. it's an enclosed golf cart, also known as a gator. metro workers and police will use these vehicles to patrol different stations. they're going to be monitoring parking areas for suspicious or illegal behavior. >> if you plan on riding the metro this weekend, give yourself plenty of extra time. six stations on the red line will be closed for repairs.

she's come a long way since that hit back in 1999. today, pop super star britney spears turns 30 years old. the singer's currently in mexico wrapping up her tour. there are reports she plans on throwing a huge party. no details yet just on when and where. over the years, spears has had two kids and her share of tabloid drama. she's still a music power house though, selling 100 million records worldwide. country singer mindy mccready is defieing a court order to surrender her 5-year-old son. the singer's parents have

custody of the boy. mccready took him during a recent visit to her father's home in florida. she's now hiding in tennessee and says she won't return the child because she claims he's being abused at her mother's home. the father of the boy appeared exclusively on the "today" show. >> we have gone through this in the past, and i've been through it. i got back on track. my life is in order. i'm doing things right now. since she has that same opportunity, instead of taking it, she chooses to abut it. i wish she would do what's right, especially for our son. >> yesterday's court order allows police to take the boy into custody no matter which state she's in. lady gaga has a new epic music video out. true to gaga form, it's bound to have a lot of folks talking. ♪ the video called "marry the

>> we're not talking about cereal or lady gaga or any of that. >> first up, though, we are talking about an issue that's important to one viewer. he's worried he might have to toss out his liquor from the last holiday season. he wants to know if liquor has a shelf life. >> he only drinks once a year. we checked with the virginia department of alcoholic beverage control. it says distilled spirits do not spoil unless they're mixed with something else. a regular bottle of liquor such as rum or vodka is fine, even after it is opened. however, it's important to always check the label because some drinks like eggnog do need to be refrigerated after they're opened. if you have eggnog from last year, let's start again. >> you don't want to go there. our next question, liz, comes from paul. he wants to know why harris teeter requires identification information such as a driver's license number when registering for its customer rewards card. >> it's a lot of info they're looking for. paul, we checked with harris

teeter for the answer to this question. they require a valid form of i.d. like a driver's license or even a passport in order to obtain a vic card. vic, by the way, stands for very important customer. your i.d. information helps them prevent customers from applying for multiple vic cards. it also helps with personalized offers and rewards. however, they will never sell or distribute your personal information. other grocers do not require a documented form of identification when signing up for their rewards cards. harris teeter asks for a bit more. it's got some people a little edgy. >> i keep it on my key chain, but i never knew what vic stood for. our last question comes through e-mail from a viewer named bren da. she's noticed a bad smell coming from her kitchen drain. that doesn't sound good. she wants to know what she can do to stop that odor.

4:00. i'm pat lawson muse. >> i'm jim handly. right now, the fbi is raiding the home of harry thomas jr. authorities are looking into allegations that thomas misused $300,000 from a youth program, spending the money on an suv and personal trips. thomas has maintained his innocence, although he's agreed to settle a civil lawsuit with the district attorney and repay the money. al qaeda claims to be holding a rockfeld man hostage. he was kidnapped in pakistan in aug. there was no claim of responsibility until yesterday when al qaeda released a lengthy set of demands to be met in exchange for his freedom. got some good news about the economy today. the unemployment rate is down to

8.6% now. that's the lowest it's been in two and a half years. economists say small businesses are started to hire more. the boost was also helped by temporary holiday hiring. herman cain says he'll make a major announcement tomorrow. he's been reassessing his campaign since monday when a woman named ginger white came forward to say they had a 13-year affair. he says they were just friends, but has also acknowledged he never told his wife about the friendship or the money he gave to white. seems authorities in aruba still have their eyes on gary giorda giordano. they say he's making unclear and contradictory statements. as soon as their prosecutors can charge him, they will ask for his extradition. giordano remains the prime suspect in the disappearance and presumed death of robyn gardner. he was released from an aruban jail this week. he's back here in the states

now. since his return, giordano and his attorney have continued to insist he's innocent. tonight, giordano talks to "dateline" in his first primetime interview. that's tonight at 10:00 here on nbc 4. the wife of mega-church pastor eddie long has apparently had a dramatic change of heart. vanessa long had issued a statement this morning saying she had filed for divorce yesterday. now there's word she has withdrawn the divorce papers. in another statement released this afternoon, vanessa long says she loves her husband and believes in him. eddie long is the pastor of the missionary baptist church in suburban atlanta and a father of four. he made national headlines earlier this year when he was accused of seducing teenage boys. he settled lawsuits filed by the teens out of court. rapper jay-z has conquered the music and business worlds. now the brooklyn-born singer is leaving his mark on the classroom. as craig melvin reports, he's

inspired a new course at georgetown university. ♪ >> reporter: this record-setting rapper and hip-hop icon has become a business tycoon and best-selling author. and now jay-z's street rhymes are being taught at one of america's top schools. in the georgetown university syllabus, it's called "the sociology of hip hop, the odyssey of jay-z." for about 140 students it's 90 minutes of head bouncing and dissecting. >> you have someone who kind of perpetuates the same impediments that were imposed upon him. >> reporter: dr. michael eric dyson has taught a course on hip-hop the last 15 years. jay-z gives him a fresh angle. >> god, forgive me for my brash

the family of a missing florida woman now has established a new timeline of the hours after her disappearance. this, as the search for the woman, shifts to the areas near a bar where she worked. mark potter has the latest. >> reporter: at a bar in orlando called the barn where michelle parker was a popular bartender, a fundraiser for the family and search effort drew a large crowd. >> these are all of our friends, our family, and her friends and her family. it's just good to be surrounded bay lot of love in here. >> reporter: meanwhile, police search for a second day at a lake near the area where a ping from parker's cell phone was last heard two weeks ago. a spokesman says nothing of

our top story tonight, a surprise raid in northeast d.c. fbi and irs swarming the home of councilmember harry thomas jr. good evening. welcome to news 4 at 5:00. i'm wendy rieger. >> and i'm jim handly. this is a story that continues to unfold. harry thomas jr. being investigated for allegedly spending $300,000 to pay for his fancy ride and personal trips. tom sherwood has been covering this story all day long and from the beginning and joins us live from northeast washington with the latest. >> reporter: jim and wendy, federal agents are still coming and going from the house here as they've been doing all day. it's been a long day for them and for harry thomas jr. this is a major step up in the federal investigation of him and the spending of hundreds of

thousands of dollars in city government funds. just after dawn friday, federal agents raided councilmember harry tommy thomas' house on this cul-de-sac in northeast washington. federal agents towed away an expensive motorcycle and thomas' new chevy tahoe. federal authorities confirmed they took action in an ongoing investigation, but they declined to even confirm it was thomas' house. federal authorities, including the irs, are investigating thomas for allegedly taking $300,000 in city grant money for youth sports and spending the money lavishly on himself. thomas has denied wrongdoing, but after a separate investigation by the d.c. attorney general this summer, thomas agreed to repay the entire $300,000. he did not admit wrongdoing. the agreement got the attention of federal authorities and u.s. attorney ronald machin, who is
