heart blake and despair. parent who is lost their son in last night's apartment fire are talking about their loss. and what they say could have prevented this tragedy. little alan alexander just moved to that apartment a few days ago, last night his life ended there. his mother said she left her kids to go to the store. darcy spencer joining us here in the studio with just aad tragic story. >> very much so. very difficult being on the scene and seeing this family in so much pain tonight. fire officials say the three siblings were trapped in that apartment building, fire blocked their escape from the front and there were bars on the windows and doors often the back. rescuers pried off the bars and pulled the kids out. for little alan it was too late. >> it's too soon. it's too soon. it shouldn't have happened. >> reporter: a distraught mother is devastated over the loss of

her youngest child. he died in a fire at their apartment building in southeast washington friday evening. >> he was 4, he didn't bother nobody. he was happy, he plate with his sisters and brothers. he woke up every morning, he said good morning to everybody. anybody needed anything, he was right there for them. >> reporter: several people were trapped in the building, fire escaped the exit from the front and there were bars over the rear windows. the child's father had asked maintenance to removes the bars on the door. >> nobody in this building had a key. i'm pretty sure if they had a key, my son would be alive right now. >> reporter: alan was in the apartment with his older brother and sister. their mom had made a quick run to the store. fire officials say they rescued

the three children from the building, alan died at a hospital later in the evening. >> he needs to be back with me, around me every day. and i can't even wake up with him any more. >> reporter: relatives and neighbors gathered for a candlelight vigil. remembering alan for his happiness and fun loving spirit. >> whenever tragedy occurs in the family. you have to pull together. the only way you'll make it through. >> reporter: fire officials have not determined how the fire started. a firefighter who suffered burns in that blaze was released from the hospital earlier today. >> thank you, darcy spencer, appreciate it. a man attacked and shot in his own neighborhood last week says he's thankful to be alive tonight. he spoke exclusively to news four, he was walking to a takeout restaurant early last saturday morning. the robber took his cell phone,

demanded his wallet and threw his car keys to the ground. when he went to pick up the keys he was shot in the back. >> there's a lot of pain. and i can feel my chest cavity starting to lose air. it's a miracle it didn't hit me, and my spinal cord severed other organs. the recovery felt miraculous. i never thought i'd be as close to death as i am. but it feels great to be alive. >> police are still searching for the suspect responsible for that violent attack. gackle moved to d.c. after graduated from the university of south carolina where he was the student body president. when the sunrises in a few hours in egypt, the massive protests will continue for the 13th straight day there. there were reports that hosni mubarak had resigned as head of egypt's ruling party, that is not the case. several top leaders in his party did quit, but mubarak has vowed to stay in office until at least

september. the resignation that did happen today are a good sign, but the will of the egyptian people will determine what happens next. >> and it is our hope that this proceeds peacefully, it proceeds with specific goals being achieved so that people can see that their voices have been heard. >> protesters said the government resignations were not enough, and vowed to keep up their campaign until mubarak steps down. meanwhile, protesters gathered to show their support for the people in egypt. cold rain, hundreds attended a rally this afternoon in the egyptian embassy in northwest, then marched to the white house. they want president obama to put more pressure on mubarak to step down. >> our protests are nothing. we're simply echoing the voices of the people back home and showing them we are standing in solidarity with them. >> democracy for the people.

>> some of the protesters came to d.c. on buses from as far away as detroit and ohio. two u.s. hikers being held in iran will go on trial tomorrow, shane bauer and josh fattal were arrested along the iran/iraq boarder. they're being held on suspicion of spying. their lawyers say they're confident the accusations against the two will be proved baseless. sarah shroud was also arrested and detained. she was released and returned home to the united states this past september. police have proof a man they arrested for burglary is actually a prolific peeping tom as well. he was arrested in december when a resident in anne county found him in their garage. police found the camcorder and found numerous nude videos on that camcorder. it took police several months to identify the victims on the

video. novak faces more than 21 new charges. police say he also had underwear belonging to some of the victims in those videos. if you're headed to the caps/penguins game tomorrow, you may want to leave the car at several streets will be closed tomorrow. eighth street between sixth and seventh street will be closed from 9:00 in the morning until 5:00 in the afternoon. the streets will be closed from 1:30 to 3:30 in the afternoon. the puck drops at verizon center at 12:30. plan ahead, and if possible, you should use metro. you've heard this before, lynnedcy lohan will be arrested. new reports that will actress will be arrested on felony theft charges. her lawyer says she's innocent. the man who was smart enough to pull off the heist the the bellagio, but not smart enough to keep his mouth shut about it,

police had to shut down a high school basketball game in baltimore last night, fans of rival teams got into a brawl in the stands, some fans were stepped on, police had to use

pepper spray to break up the fight. the game was suspended and never finished. lindsay lohan's lawyer says she didn't do it. lohan's legal team is now denying allegations that the actress stole a $2,500 necklace. the police in los angeles are investigating whether she took the necklace from a store without permission. so far no charges have been filed. tmz is reporting lohan will be charged with a felony on monday. she's struggling to complete the terms of her probation connected to a 2007 drunk driving case. a few months ago they were crammed into a small filthy home. tonight lots of cats have new loving homes. a special adoption program today kicked off in fairfax county. it's designed to find homes for the 160 cats rescued from one house in annandale. some of the cats are not used to

aside tickets at face value for cook's group. he hopes to be well enough to attend next year's super bowl in indianapolis. he's accused of robbing one of the world's most famous casinos. now we know whow the cops caugh the guy accused of robbing the bellagio. here he is. police say over the past month and a half, he bought so many drinks for his buddies and people became suspicious. he also allegedly bragged to a lot of people and returned to the bellagio a few times where he lost about 100 grand playing poker. police arrested him wednesday when he tried selling two of the chips to an undercover officer. >> charged with grand larceny and bad judgment. >> among other charges. >> amongst many other things. that's the guy you want to have as a friend at the bar. >> yeah, do you. >> what's the word here fp.
