of the ice and snow festival. this etherial ice has drawn visitors to china to see how all of this is done. this is harbin china. average temperature 11 degrees below fahrenheit. this is the city of ice every ware. >> so here's downtown harbin. >> reporter: the building blocks come from here. the men and women of harbin literally carve the blocks of ice from the river. it's still grueling physical trade. push aside the snow, cut the frozen river into a grid and huge blocks. each of these blocks weigh at least 2,000 pounds. john has been doing this for 23 years.

trucks then deliver the ice into storage. no further refridgeeration required. here in the backyard of the festival, they wait to be turned into pieces of art. i don't know how long it takes them but they put each of these castles together, block by block. >> during the day it's like a frozen lost city. when the sun goes down, the ice city really comes alive. the ice lit up by led lights can be of any shape and any color. the size of 100 football fields, the harbin ice and snow world is a winter wonderland.
