communities all across the country are gathering to speak out and reject the hatred that culminated with a woman's death and dozens of injuries when a white nationalist and counterprotestorses clashed. sunday night, i'm walter p res, sarah is off. a massive show of solidarity across the country after deadly violence in virginia. hundreds of vigils today, including several in our area to honor the victims and condemn the hatred that fueled the rampage. we begin in charlottesville with elizabeth herr of abc. >> reporter: at the scene of terror and chaos in the streets of charlottesville that ended in death and devastation. the city is now sharing messages of unity and condolences for the victims. >> i want the country to know that the city of charlottesville is a place of extreme compassion. >> reporter: including heather heyer, a 32-year-old paralegal

from virginia killed when a car plowed through a crowd protesterring against the white nationalist rally. >> heather was a strong person who always defended what she believed in. and heather's life was not about hate. >> reporter: the suspected driver, 20 year-old james alex fields jr. from ohio sits in jail, charged with murder. meanwhile, the man who organized the unite the right demonstration. >> i was the organizer of the unite the right rally. >> reporter: tried to hold a press conference today, instead, heckled and confronted by counterprotestors and ultimately escorted away by police in riot gear. this, as the virginia governor continues to denounce and condemn the supporters of white supremacy. >> to the white supremacists and the neo-nazis who came to our beautiful state yesterday, there is no place for you here. >> reporter: and antiviolence

vigils and rallies are held across the country, honoring the victims. and tonight this clarification from the white house. a statement which read in part, the president said yesterday he condemns all forms of violence and hatred, of course, that includes white supremacists, kkk, neo-nazis and all extremist groups. charlottesville, virginia. back in our area, hundreds gathered in parks and public spaces to condemn the violence and call for peace. action news reporter annie mccormack stopped by several events and has this story. >> reporter: hundreds came out to the vigil. the eventually began with words from a rabbi who was in the center of it all in charlottesville. rabbi klein leading the vigil in roxborough in song. went as a part of the group, answering a call for human rights. they got word the white national

ist rally was forming a month ago. >> marching down the perpendicular streets to face the white supremacists. >> reporter: her experience resonated with the crowd. >> as a person black and jewish and dedicated to liberation for the people, this means my life, you know? this type of -- not just the vigil, but like the actions that we take. >> reporter: organizing the event. >> i don't think that it's right to stay silent. so coming together, standing up. >> reporter: tonight there was the same show of support in west chester. elkins park in south jersey, and in south philadelphia and center city. local leaders in philadelphia quickly spoke out sunday, including the president of the philadelphia naacp. >> this wasn't a ballpark game where a fight broke out. this was organized. and one person even described the way some of the white

nationalists were dressed, that they came for combat. they came for battle. >> reporter: mayor jim kenny released a lengthy statement, saying in part, all of us have the responsibility to create the future we want. just saying we oppose something is no longer enough. we have to remind people what we stand for. archbishop sharing these words tonight. if we want a different kind of country in the future, we need to start today with the conversion in our own hearts and the insistence on the same in others. the response came from the football field, from philadelphia eagle chris long, a charlottesville native and university of virginia graduate. >> you grapple with how you react when you see that imagery and know it's your home down. >> reporter: the mayor encouraging philadelphiaens tonight to remain peaceful, but engaged. annie mccor mack. and similar vigils across the country. san francisco to austin, texas, most of these vigils were somber, but peaceful. things took a violent turn in

seattle where hundreds of people took part in another counterprotest and clashed with police. coming up a little later in the newscast, a closer look at the victims from yesterday's attack in virginia and hear from those who witnessed the violence. moving on to the accuweather forecast. today was a great day to get outside and enjoy the beautiful conditions with another nice day on deck for tomorrow. melissa mcgee is here tomorrow for the first check of the accuweather forecast. >> hi there, walter. the humidity stays low for the start of the workweek on monday. and not a bad finish to the weekend. high in the city of 84 degrees. right now, 74 in philadelphia. cooler off to the north and west. syracuse, buffalo and pittsburgh have numbers currently in the upper 60s or the lower 60s across the region. that's all because of high pressure. satellite 6 with action radar showing high pressure out of the eastern great lakes. we're tapping into a northwesterly wind tonight. mostly clear, quiet, and stays pretty comfortable. as we fast forward into the

start of the workweek on monday. 8:00 in the morning, sun to start the day. temperature of 72. by 11 a.m., 81 degrees. the clouds start to build into the area as we get into the afternoon hours. so 84 by 2:00 tomorrow, and it's mostly cloudy by 5:00 and 11:00 in the evening. as we look at the weather headlines, the humidity remains low on monday. but the showers creep back into the forecast by tuesday. details coming up. >> thank you, melissa. it was a violent saturday night in chester. three people injured in a police-involved shooting. today members of a local church gathered outside the chester police department and four locations to pray for peace. >> the things going on in the streets, the church cannot be silent about it. >> we trust god to give us guidance to know what to do, how to pray. praying for our mayor and the officers. >> as for the shootings, police say gunfire erupted outside of

the gold room bar on edgemont avenue. one shot, two fled the scene in an suv. and at one point reportedly shooting at responding officers. the suspects crashed six blocks later. they had been shot as well. all of the wounded were taken to local hospitals. the incident remains under investigation. the new jersey turnpike was at a standstill today after an oil tanker overturned in burlington county. viewer video of the scene. you can see in chesterfield township. happened this afternoon and forced officials to shut down all northbound lanes of the turnpike. that stretch has been reopened. no word on possible injuries in this case. over in atlantic city, a woman was taken to the hospital after crashing a jet ski. police say she was skiing in the back bay near rhode island avenue this afternoon when she crashed. no further information has been released. fire fighters had to rescue a man who fell into a sink hole last night in the strawberriy mansion section of the city.

eugene clark said he was trying to put back cones around the hole knocked down by people driving by. but the pavement buckled and he tumbled at least eight feet into the sink hole on the 3100 block of norris street. >> i was terrified. it was quick and fast. because i stood over there trying to put the piece and straddle my feet over the hole. when i opened it up, the ground just went in. >> clearly rescue workers were able to pull clark to safety less than an hour later. injured his ankle, wrist and lower back, but expected to recover. the water department was notified of a potential leak on thursday, but no word when those repairs will be made. we have an update now to the controversial dune project in margate. and the army corp. of engineers say it's makes progress. they now plan to resume drilling this week. that's making a lot of residents and vacationer ins angry.

christie ileto is here now with the latest. christie. >> reporter: and walter, residents are not backing down. saying the cleanup, as the project continues, is just a temporary fix to a problem that could have easily been avoided. it's become their rally cry >> this is your beach. these people were not invited here. >> reporter: margate residents pressing on in the fight to stop a controversial government-ordered dune project intended to stop flooding, but only created headaches and potential health hazards. >> there's no beach. we have no beach. we have a giant cess pool swamp. >> zika, air borne illnesses, bacteria. >> reporter: a judge ordered the army corp. of engineers to clean up, but getting rid of the storm water ponding from the excavation. adding sand to raise the elevation and building an elevated walkway for access to the ocean while work continues. >> i was hoping for either a fix, but i'm really hoping they

put it back the way it was. >> our damage from storms comes from the bay, not from the beach. because on average, our bulkheads are six foot tall. and the wave is not going over it. >> this city voted against this thing. >> reporter: residents say their fears are now a living nightmare. >> we knew this was going to happen. it's happened. it's worse than we thought was going to happen. >> they had an idea. it was a bad idea. they could have done better. they didn't. but now the fact that you have judges still backing them up against all the evidence. it's a little suspect. >> reporter: and as the fight continues, the feds say the ponding water is fenced off, and dredging operations continue on tuesday. >> thank you, christie. happening tomorrow, lane closures will once again be in effect along roosevelt boulevard from the bucks county line to red lion road and to ninth street. running monday through friday, 9

presidency, you have to call that out. >> he admits that steve bannon never told him he was a white supremacist, but he never asked. but scaramucci thinks the extent to which bannon tolerates is, quote, uninexcusable and a drag on the agenda of the president. 17 undocumented immigrants found in a tractor-trailer this afternoon in texas. a family member reportedly tipped off police to the smuggling operation. police found the trailer in the town of edinburgh across the mexican border. first responders knocked on trailers parked at the rest stop until they located the immigrants from mexico, honduras and romania. the suspected ringleaders have been detained. that massive powerball jackpot is even bigger because nobody won the drawing. so the new prides stands -- get this -- at $430 million. that jackpot has been growing since june 10th. meanwhile, this past friday,
