"action news" was the first and only station overhead when the nearly week long manhunt ended here on the garden state parkway in lacy township. arthur buckel did not struggle as police took him into custody. buckel wall spotted on surveillance video at a rest to. last night officers searched a wooded area nearby in the early morning hours putting an entire community on edge. >> yeah, we had heard that he might have been hiding in some of these houses but i guess that was not true. the cops were here last night looking under the houses that are under construction in case he tried to get in there which is something he might have done. >> buckel has since been taken to the state prison in trenton for a medical evaluation.

officials have not yet said how he escaped. >> now to the philadelphia eagles. big news for the face of the franchise tonight. quarterback sam bradford is back in the nest. >> that after days of drama and uncertainty surrounding bradford's status with the team. >> "action news" sports director ducis rodgers joins us now with more. was it any surprise that he would eventually come back. >> will he to come back. >> he had no choice, right. >> this was an unnecessary distraction at the end of the day. the stalemate between sam bradford and the eagles came to an end when bradford showed up at the team's training facility he's saying all the right things now. bradford worked out with his teammates today. these are voluntary workouts, those are the ones bradford skipped out on after the eagles drafted their quarterback of the future in carson wentz. bradford and his agent requested a trade very publicly. mind you he had just signed a two year, 35 millions dollars contract in march with $22 million guaranteed. eagles were steadfast and consistent in their response to there trade request.

they had no plans to trade himly they want bradford to be their starting quarterback. bradford issued this statement: like i said he's saying all the right things now. he splay to spend -- mend some fences with teammates in the locker room. >> thank you ducis. >> a show down shaping up between state lawmakers and the federal government about a law that limits protections for lgbt people. about 90 minutes ago the department of justice filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the state of north carolina. according to u.s. attorney general loretta lynch, the state's house bill two amounts to state sponsored discrimination. this comes after the state's governor filed his own lawsuit asking a judge to keep the law in effect.

we'll have much more on this brewing legal fight coming up tonight at 5:30. >> we are learning more about the man accused in last week's deadly shooting spree in maryland. the alleged gunman made his first court appearance today and now he is facing murder charges. abc's elizabeth hur live in new york with more on this story. >> reporter: monica we learned today the suspect rendered a car and turned his phone off to try to avoid being tracked but we are told he simply could not see well enough to drive out of the area after losing his glasses. charged in a shooting spree that left three people dead and three others injured, eulalio tordil has been ordered by a judge to remain in jail. >> the maximum penalty that mr. tordil, life without the possibility of parole. >> reporter: eulalio tordil's run from authorities came to an end on friday his arrest caught on surveillance cameras as police took down one of their own an officer with the federal protective service put on administrative

leave after he was ordered to stay away from his wife when she accused him of beating her. tordil stands accused of killing his estranged wife gladys and wounding a bystander outside of a maryland high school thursday. >> three down. >> reporter: the next day authorities say tordil struck again at maryland's montgomery mall firing eight shots trying to carjack a woman. >> she screamed and two men unknown to her came to her rescue. one of those individuals was shot and killed. the other individual was in very serious condition. >> reporter: the man killed has been identified as malcolm wynnefield. prosecutors say tordil continued on to a supermarket where three more shots were fired and he fatally shot claude dean molina in what appears to be another botched carjacking. >> there were some ♪ that were seized after the first killing in prince george's county that indicated that at the defendant might be suicidal or might attempt to

be involved in a shootout with the police. >> reporter: well, police say they have recovered what they believe is the gun used in the shootings but authorities are now investigating how that weapon was not seized as part of that protection order issued against the suspect. we are live in new york, i'm elizabeth hur for channel6 "action news. back to you. >> elizabeth thank you. police in camden county are releasing new information about a major drug bust. last friday police raided homes in gloucester township and winslow township after a months long investigation. inside they found a a so-called significant amount of heroin, several ounces of cocaine cash and a gun. four alleged drug dealers were arrested including the ring's suspected leader curtis williams. their bail ranges from $10,000 to $400,000. >> an suv ended up on its roof after an accident here in the olney section of philadelphia. this was there scene around 6:30 this morning on olney avenue near ogontz. we're told three vehicles in

accuweather. >> this is severe weather season for the plains and they're getting it tonight. in the meantime we're seeing a lot of this, sky6 taking a look at the center city skyline. the clouds are back after the blue skies and bright sunshine for mother's day. and you'll also notice that sky6 shaking a little bit. we've had some gusty winds, winds gusting up to about 35 miles per hour today. temperatures right now are sliding back a little bit. we made it up to 71 degrees earlier but now with the cloud cover dropped down to 66 in philadelphia. allentown 67. trenton 68. and the clouds are thicker to the south so that's where we have the cooler temperatures, wilmington 62, cape may point currently only 60 degrees and you can see those winds out of the southwest generally about eight to 16 miles per hour. and with that southwesterly flow, it also is noticeably more humid than yesterday. now, satellite6 along with action radar showing the same cold front that moved through early yesterday morning that brought us the clouds and some showers, it's coming back but you'll notice that mainly

we're looking at some clouds right now. it's losing a lot of of its moisture but the problem over about the next 24 to 36 hours, that front will kind of be oscillating right over us and that will bring us some unsettled weather mainly in the form of clouds but also a few showers. call from accuweather for tonight, lots of clouds, a spotty shower or two primarily south of philadelphia, philadelphia the low 51. allentown 45. and cape may 52 degrees. so, future tracker showing 11:30 tonight you can see the cloud deck generally from the lehigh valley down to the south a couple spotty showers, nothing more than that and this is the latest computer model run. this shows that around 6 o'clock we will have some generally light showers across south jersey tomorrow morning and it looks like some of that moisture will advance a little bit farther up to the north early in the afternoon, right along the i-95 corridor and areas south some scattered showers and then they will begin to retreat as high pressure begins to move in on wednesday. so, the five day at 5:00 showing tomorrow it's going to

be cooler with a lot of clouds and showers primarily south of philadelphia and we're not talking about all day heavy rain, just on and off showers. the high only 61. wednesday high pressure nudges back in, that will bring us the return of some sunshine. it will be warmer, 73 degrees and thursday that high pressure right over us during the day so that means going to be a nice day, 74 degrees but rain arriving at night and friday bad timing for the dad vail regatta, periods of rain, 71 degrees and some of those leftover showers will linger into saturday with a high of 69. i'll let you know if we can clear those showers out on sunday coming up in the full accuweather 7-day forecast. little bit unsettled this week but not as bad as last week. >> we'll take it. thanks cecily. much more still ahead on "action news" at 5:30, developing news on the brewing battle between the justice department and the state of north carolina over that controversial bathroom law. what federal authorities announced just a short time ago. >> investigators release new information about a fire that killed three people including a little child in montgomery county this weekend.

>> "action news" at 5:00 continues now with the latest on breaking news from delaware. the attorney general's office has just announced that three howard high school students will face criminal charges in the death of 16-year-old amy joyner-francis. joyner-francis was attacked in a high school bathroom last month. she later died at the hospital. according to police, she did have a preexisting heart condition that was aggravated by that assault and eventually led to her death. authorities say only one girl actually hit amy. she is now charged with criminally negligent homicide and those charges could be moved to adult court. they he could carry a sentence of up to eight years in prison for a conviction. the other two girls are charged with criminal conspiracy. that carries a sentence of up to one year in prison. since those girls have no prior records their cases will remain in juvenile court. we have an "action news" crew on the way to wilmington right now and we of course will bring you the very latest on "action news" at 6:00. >> now to a story that's continuing to develop tonight. a battle between a north carolina leaders and the

department of justice. this over that controversial lgbt bathroom law. federal authorities gave the state until the close of business today to agree not to enact the law which would require transgender people to use the public restroom matching the sex on their birth certificate. if not, the state could lose federal education funds. but both sides are digging in for a fight. abc's karen traverse live in washington, d.c. tonight with all the details. karen, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, rick. it was a dave potentially groundbreaking lawsuits. first the state of north carolina assume the federal government for what it calls overreach. and then the justice department firing back asking for a court order to declare this state law discriminatory. north carolina and the federal government squaring off in a heated legal battle. >> how to balance the expectations of privacy and equality. in one of the most private areas of our lives.

>> reporter: hb2 north carolina's so-called bathroom law requires transgender people to use the public restroom that matches their sex on their birth certificate. the department of justice said law violates the federal civil rights of transgender people. >> we are seeking a court order declaring pb2's restroom restriction discriminatory as well as the statewide bar on its enforcement. >> reporter: north carolina's governor today asking for clarity. >> we believe a court rather than a federal agency should tell a state, our nation and employers across the country what the law requires. >> frailly uniformly transgendered rights have been upheld. >> reporter: there's a massive amount of money at stake here. already businesses and entertainers such as bruce springsteen and pearl jam have boycotted north carolina. one study found north carolina could lose up to $4.7 billion

annual in federal education funding. >> it is not a good idea to play chicken with the federal government over federal funds. >> reporter: and this legal battle could have far reaching implications and could even reach the supreme court. north carolina's governor said today that this is something that he is going to keep up his fight and he said this is now a national issue. reporting live from washington, karen travers channel6 "action news. rick. >> karen thank you. a massive wildfire continues to burn in canada. officials say improving weather conditions have helped keep it from spreading. the fire is already burned 400,000 acres and destroyed 1600 homes and other buildings. 80,000 people have been evacuated and many fear what they will find when they return home. >> gotten pictures and our whole street is knocked down. i think there's a couple can houses left. what are you going to go back to? >> officials are working on a plan to start allowing people to return to the oil sands town of fort mcmurray.

an investigation is still under way to find out how the fire started. >> the mexican drug lord joaquin el chapo guzman one step closer to being tried in the u.s. today a judge in mexico ruled that he can be extradited from mexico to the united states to face trafficking charges. that ruling came just days after el chapo was transferred to the maximum security prison near the texas border. he was captured in january after nearly six months on the run following his most recent prison break. el chapo's lawyers say they do plan to appeal today's decision. severe turbulence forced a plane to make an emergency landing in nashville tennessee. the turbulence was so strong it caused the engine covering to come off. it happened last night while that plane was traveling from atlanta to chicago. delta said the aircraft landed safely. all 91 customers on board left the plane safely. world news tonight with david muir will have much more on the continuing wildfire battle in canada as well as

that fight over the north carolina bathroom legislation. you can watch that that following "action news" at 6:00. >> in other news tonight montgomery county fire officials announced just a short time ago that a fire that killed two adults and a child in norristown over the weekend started accidentally. they say the flames sparked on the enclosed porch of the home along the 800 block of dekalb pike. firefighters rushed to rescue several people inside including the three victims. a seconds child was also pulled from the fire and remains in critical condition at the hospital. their names have not been released. chopper6 was over the scene of a fire at a business in west norriton montgomery county this afternoon. this is along the 1900 block of west main street. dispatchers tell "action news" that firefighters arrived to find fire and smoke pouring from the building. luckily everyone made it out without being hurt. still not clear how the blaze started. >> from our new jersey news room now, police are investigating a shooting that left a man injured overnight. it happened on 45th street near westfield avenue in

pennsauken camden county. the man was shot in the lower body. no word on his condition today. police are still trying to figure out who shot him and why. a convicted rapist sentenced to decades behind bars today. a philadelphia judge ordered antawn brown to spend 40 to 196 years in state prison. in october, the 25-year-old pleaded beltway to raping four teen girls in the germantown section. prosecutors say he wore a mask during all of his attacks which happened in the spring of 2013. he also threatened to kill his victims. they were all ages 12 to 17 years old at the time. >> a new castle gas station was the target of back to back crimes. the valero station on south dupont highway was robbed around 12:30 yesterday morning by a man who fled in an suv. less than four hours later around 4:00 a.m., another man walked in and announced a holdup. he left on foot. investigators say the two robberies appear to be unrelated. no one was hurt.

also from our delaware news room a couple from ar rehoboth beach accused of stealing from a grocery store every day since february. they would reportedly hide things like meat and toiletries on themselves and then pay for other items. the alleged crimes all 83 of them took place at the giant in lighthouse plaza. both of the suspects were arrested yesterday then charged and released. new jersey lawmakers are set to vote on a work leave bill. the legislation would require employers in the state to offer an hour of sick leave for every 30 hours worked. lawmakers say that legislation will help low earning workers who cannot take a sick day without losing pay. business groups that oppose the measure say the bill will come and make it more difficult to operate a business in new jersey. >> time now for an update on the traffic situation monday night. >> over to matt pelman to see what's rolling out there. hey, matt. >> we have people leaving work right now and they're sick of

howard high school on april 21st. the medical examiner determined joyner-francis died from a sudden cardiac incident caused by a preexisting heart condition but officials say the assault aggravated the cardiac problem. a 16-year-old faces criminal negligent homicide. she could be tried as an adult. two other girls are charged with criminal conspiracy. wilmington mayor dennis williams issued a statement saying this is the first step in providing closure "as the process moves forward, i ask there we keep family and loved ones of everyone involved in our thoughts and prayers." the search for escaped convict arthur buckel is finally over. buckle was captured this morning along the garden state parkway in lacy township ocean county. this is exclusive video from chopper6. 20 police officers surrounded buckel near double trouble state park. almost a week after he escaped from the ancora
