cottman and algon avenues in northeast philadelphia. police say the two cars collided just before 4 o'clock this morning and the force of it was to the point that one of the cars ended up on the lawn of northeast high school. both drivers had to be extricated out of their cars weren't rushed to the hospital with multiple injuries. >> let's turn now to david and karen for weather and traffic. good morning. >> good morning, everybody. we're off to a mild start this morning. it's real that last gasp of mild air before the cooler stuff arrives later today. you can see there is some cloud cover around the area to start out and in fact there is also some dense fog that's popped up in areas close to the coast, dense fog advisory until 10 o'clock in all of our coastal counties where visibility is below a quarter mile. this goes until 10 o'clock this morning and current visibilities are pretty low down along the coast. under a quarter mile in some spots. we're now seeing that fog migrate a little closer to philadelphia. the visibility in the city has dropped from 10 miles to 5 miles just in the last half hour. and so it could be that this fog starts to become more of an issue closer to

philadelphia as well as the morning goes on. mild to starter out though. 57 degrees in philadelphia right now, almost 60 in wilmington and close to that down the shore as well. 57 millville. still 49 in allentown but even that is a relatively mild number. as we head out the door this morning, 55 degrees by six and 56 by 8 o'clock. some of you may be dealing with fog. mild today although we'll hit that high of 66 relatively early. i could see that happening around 1:30 or 2 o'clock. after that the temperatures dip. 64 by 3 o'clock and by 6 o'clock all the way down to 53 and karen that does not bode well for the overnight hours when we are going to get down right cold. details coming up. >> all right dave. we'll enjoy that mild commute. you're right we're dealing with the fog this morning. david showed us how the visibility reports were worth in south jersey and delaware. here we're looking morrisville bucks county but you can also detect at least a touch of fog right here so you got to lower your speeds and be careful. don't forget to use your low beams not high beams. this is route 1 at pennsylvania avenue. we have that serious accident that matt and tam have been

talking about in northeast philadelphia here, cottman avenue and algon avenue, they've shut down cottman between algon and somerdale. if you're in this area youy you can use rhawn street and levick or use when it can kerr avenue or castor avenue as options. tacony palmyra bridge is in the clear. the construction has wrapped up right on schedule so looking a little better there and speeds on i-95, the schuylkill and the the blue route mostly in the 50's at this point with no big problem. one more live look outside. this is the vine street expressway approaching the schuylkill, not too bad right here and traffic is very light, tam. >> thank you karen. we're learning more about a man who was shot and can killed in philadelphia over the weekend. it turns out he was the father of the l.a. lakers wayne ellington. "action news" reporter katherine scott is live at police headquarters with the latest. good morning, katherine. >> reporter: good morning, tam. this happened on sunday night and since then detectives here at the homicide division have been working to find whoever is behind this. the basketball star tells "action news" that he heard the news about his father from

his fiancé right after his game on sunday. it still hasn't set in. >> for a son to lose his father, it's very tough. >> reporter: right after l.a. lakers guard wayne ellington played in his team's first win of the season sunday night. he heard the news. his father wayne ellington, sr., had been shot and killed back in philadelphia. like always, he had just heard from his father right before the game. >> he text me like he always does before the game. just said ball hard. get this first win tonight. philadelphia police say ellington sr. was found inside his car on the 5200 block of marion street in germantown just after 8:00 p.m. he had been shot in the head. >> he was smart. he was funny. and he loved his family a lot. >> reporter: ellington jr. explains his father played a huge role in his basketball career first putting a ball in his hands at five years old. he later was a standout player at episcopal academy, went on to play at unc before being

drafted. his father would always text him before his games. sunday was the last time. >> i don't think it really set into me yet that my next game my dad's not going to text me because somebody decided to take his life. >> reporter: and again, so far no arrests in this case. ellington is on leave from the team while he grieves with his family. we're live at police headquarters, katherine scott, channel6 "action news." >> thanks, katherine. happening today, kidnapping suspect delvin barnes will face a federal judge. he is the man accused of abducting a woman off a germantown sidewalk earlier this month. erin o'hearn joins us live from the satellite center with more on this. erin. >> good morning, matt. the 37-year-old was brought to philadelphia yesterday from virginia where he is -- where he was accused of abducting a 16-year-old girl but first he will face a judge here this afternoon on kidnapping charges and perhaps be assigned a lawyer. now, barnes has been in custody since last week.

of course authorities believe he is the man seen in a disturbing video that was released right here abducting 22-year-old carleesha freeland-gaither after she had gotten off a bus. a witness said she kicked out the rear window as she fought with her attacker. federal investigators used gps device placed in barnes' car by a used car dealer to help locate the vehicle and rescue freeland-gaither three days later. again, barnes will be in court today. of course we'll keep you updated on any developments as they happen today and throughout the week. i'm erin o'hearn live in the satellite center. tam, back to you. >> erin thank you for that. hang today, the first person will be sentenced under pennsylvania's brad fox straw purchase law. stacy dawson of chester will be sentenced today for the straw purchase of two guns for her boyfriend a convicted felon. the brad fox law is named for the plymouth township police officer, the gun plan who killed officer fox got his weapon through a straw purchase. the law mandates a minimum sentence of five years in

prison for individuals who are convicted a second time of straw purchasing guns. it is 5:06 and detectives arrested a man accused of vandalizing two cemeteries in bucks county including the burial grounds of veterans. bensalem police say 29-year-old anthony carter of feasterville removed american flags and then set them on fire. detectives were able to collect dna evidence from the flag's wooden handle and it matched their suspect. police do not believe there was any motive beyond making mischief. carter denies the charges. >> so, david, it's nice to set that fog option on storm tracker 6. >> yeah, it's been a good morning for that. we have some dense fog down by the shore but it is beginning to push inland a little bit and philadelphia's starting to see visibilities drop a little bit. nothing real dense in the city just yet but that could change and it's something we'll be watching through the morning. your thickest fog though is right down in those coastal communities where we have less than a quarter mile visibility. let's head outside and we're looking at the airport and the fog not all that bad here just

yet. we have been noting a little bit of a misty look in some of the lights above the terminals but so far officially 5-mile visibility in the city. still mild is your first highlight of your forecast today. one more day of the milder air, although this afternoon we are going to start to feel those temperatures drop a bit and then overnight we are looking at an all-out plunge in temperatures. temperatures right now, though, aren't that bad. 57 degrees in philadelphia. 57 in millville. 54 in trenton. 49 in allentown and 57 in sea isle city and the winds right now aren't all that strong. mostly in the single digits. you've got satellite showing you that morning cloud cover. could be a little bit of drizzle mixed in in areas where the fog is thick. and then out to the west some clearing and it does look like we're going to transition to a mix of clouds and sun and this precip out to the west is going to fall apart before it gets here. as we take a look in allentown, we are going for a relatively mild high of 63 degrees, a little on the cool side, clouds mixing with sun as the day goes on. at the shore also above

average temps today with a high getting up to 66 degrees, clouds mixing with sun, once we get rid of that dense fog advisory which expires at 10 o'clock. after 10:00 we expect the fog to be a little bit better and then in philadelphia, we're looking at a high of 66 degrees. again, clouds with some morning fog giving way to some afternoon sun and as we go through the afternoon, those winds are going to turn out of the northwest and pick up to about eight to 16 miles per hour. here's how the numbers are going to go today. 56 by 8 o'clock, 60 by 11:00 your high probably strikes around one:30 or 2:00 with 66 and then we really start to fall in the afternoon. by 5 o'clock we'll be down to 56 degrees and there will be that breeze blowing. speaking of the winds, here's how you'll see that wind shift. notice how the winds just during the day slip out of the northwest and start to pick up. so, look for it to get blustery later on and we're also looking at cooler temperatures as we get into the afternoon from about 1 o'clock, 2 o'clock where we're going to hit that high down the 6 o'clock you go from the 60's down to the 50's in philadelphia and then just continues to drop overnight by

11 o'clock tonight cecily will have numbers in the 40's for you and by tomorrow morning i'll be showing you numbers in the 30's. that's the way it's looking. your exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, going for that high of execs today. clouds and sun temperatures falling in the afternoon and winds picking up. tomorrow brisk and chilly, a high of about 51. at night there could be a sprinkle or maybe a flurry around. doesn't look like it's goy going to be much more than that. brick and cold on friday, 45. saturday chilly, 46. starting out with temperatures around the freezing mark both of those mornings and then on sunday evening, clouds get thicker, we get a high of 59 and there is the chance of some showers rolling in and maybe some wet snow north and west of philadelphia. doesn't look like a lot but that's something we'll keep our eyes on. we're also keeping our eyes on that annual accuweather winter weather outlook tomorrow night on "action news" cecily tynan will unveil or forecast for the winter looking at the possibilities of above or below average snow and whether or not it's going to be colder than usual or milder, that would be nice. >> yes. >> so that's coming up tomorrow night.

>> ♪ >> welcome back. you're taking a live look here on sky 6 across center city. you can see a little bit of haze in the back light there and that's because we're dealing with some fog out there this morning. it's 5:14, 57 degrees. >> karen has got a bad accident near a school in philadelphia. >> yeah, we have been talking about this one in northeast philadelphia. cottman avenue blocked. here you can see that car and look at the damage of it. it's up on the sidewalk right here. debris on the roadway and there are police blocking off cottman avenue want to algon avenue and summerdale avenue. the action cam live on the scene right by the northeast high school here so you got to watch for this, a serious accident. people were injured on the scene. stick to rhawn street or levick street as your alternate as we see it right by the school there and the car right up onto the grass. we have a messy situation. let's check your suburban traffic report and go outside live and we want to see what it looks like here.

this is i-95 in bucks county right near 332. we can see the fog in this area and the visibility reports have been showing us it's much worse in south jersey and delaware but even looking here in bucks county we can see the fog. i mean, people are moving okay so no big deal here but just be careful with that fog. the fog is causing problems specifically in new jersey. they've reduced the speeds at this point to 45 miles an hour on the new jersey turnpike between exit 7a heading north between exit 7a and 12. let's take a look at some of these visibility reports right now. you can kind of see why. half a mile visibility at beach haven. down to just a quarter of a mile along the coastline. .3 of a mile invilleville and in dover delaware. 5 miles at philadelphia international airport. so not a big problem right now in the city. a little touch of it you can see up towards the north as well but in allentown 9-mile visibility. i just want to show you some of these temperatures. it's 57 degrees right now. we're almost at our high for the day already. our normal high is 18 degrees

warmer in millville 19 degrees warmer in wilmington than it was yesterday morning. you get the idea. it's a milder start to the day, matt. >> okay, thanks karen. new this morning, fire has leveled a church in a chicago suburb. flames tour through the building last night in the village of island lake. firefighters spent several hours bringing the blaze under control. so far, no word on injuries or a cause. >> a burglar georgia crawled on his belly to try to avoid motion detectors but he probably didn't expect the store to have surveillance cameras with night vision. police say the suspect broke a hole in the fence of this business, tore his way through an exhaust fan and then spent hours trying to disable the alarm system. and after all those hours of crawling around in the end the crook bust need a haven'ting machine and made off with a couple dollars. police are still trying to figure out why a man got stuck inside a wall at a colorado marshall's store. even more bizarre, he was apparently trapped there for several days. firefighters had to cut

through the exterior to rescue the 35-year-old manly he had been screaming so loudly that people inside the store could hear him. the man originally crawled through a vent on the roof for some unknown reason. no charges have been filed. >> 517. the fbi released its annual crime statistics and actually show an improving trend. >> a new report suggests when it comes to lasting weight loss many popular diets come >> ♪

daughter filed a lawsuit to force her estranged parents to pay up and when we speak with their daughter's attorney this story takes another shocking twist. >> kaitlyn did not voluntarily leave the home. she was thrown out. >> she's also suing us for a new car. >> now these parents are being required to pay for their daughter's schooling. could this happen you to? you won't want to miss our special report coming up tonight at 11:00. >> got some fog out there this morning. let's take a live look outside and show it to you. it's not a big deal near delaware county. the blue route at macdade boulevard looking pretty good. as you look under the street lights there you can see a touch of fog, not any pig deal as you're heading out. route 70 between 38 and cropwell road construction blocks one lane until 6 o'clock. fog is lot worse in south jersey and delaware. be careful especially with these construction crews. cherry hill as well on route 41 dave. >> most us are in the 50's so it is rather mild. probably cool enough for a

sweatshirt. you can probably take the hood down. this afternoon i would keep it handy. the winds pick up and we'll see temperatures get a bit cooler. rooting for lasalle as our college of the morning. it is homecoming week at lasalle this week. as we take a look at our forecast for the bus stop and the el, 57 degrees by 9 o'clock, still very mild but probably cloudy. we have that fog that is getting dense down at the shore and starting to creep up toward philadelphia. that may still be an issue in some spots at nine. by noon 63, coulder degrees by 3 o'clock. we are going to see a high of 66 but that's probably back here around 1:30 or 2:00 and then the winds presidential candidate up and we go all the way down to 6 o'clock. how about that. down by the airport hong to see all green aircraft despite the fog down by the shore and so far so good in boston though fog is being reported at logan so maybe some delays later there tam. >> thank you david. going on to health check the long term impact of popular diets doesn't seem to have good news. research at mcgill university found they could say some good news but not so great news for the 70 percent of americans

trying to do a historic landing to get a spacecraft onto a comet. the lander has spent 10 years fixed to the side of a mother craft making a journey across the solar system. it can't be steered once it's released so they've got to launch it which they did overnight and hope that that probe is able to continue on its way to the comet where it will actually latch on using harpoons and screws. now they'll get confirmation of whether or not this all worked out by about 11 o'clock this morning. and the scientists are hoping that the probe will help us learn more about the composition of comets and also what happens to comets as they get closer to the sun. >> some believe comets are why we're here. they dropped all these elements that are exotic that allowed human beings. >> we got a matt o'donnell out of the deal. >> and a tamala edwards. >> hey. >> pretty nice deal. 5:27. a pregnant panhandler drives off in a mercedes benz out west and leaves some wondering if it was part of a scam >> also officials in ferguson, missouri are getting ready for more protests with a grand

>> ♪ >> this morning on "action news," the father of an nba star is murdered on the streets of philadelphia. only on "action news" we talk to wayne ellington about this crime. >> some of us are seeing a foggy start this morning and that could slow down the commute from the forecast to the roads, what you need to know before you head out the door. >> and a pregnant woman begging for help from strangers. but it's what she did next that made some of them start to call the police. >> good morning. good to see you. it's 5:30 on this wednesday. weather and traffic with david and karen right now. >> one more mild day and we're starting out that way. take a look as we have some low lying cloud cover across most of the region. the promise of some sun breaking out later but for now, it's not only cloudy but also foggy especially down by the coast. we have a dense fog advisory up until 10 o'clock in all of our coastal counties. in some cases visibility is below a quarter mile and if we take a closer look at this you can see that the fog is beginning to push up a little closer to philadelphia. the actual visibility in philadelphia is still at 5 miles but in trenton we've dropped to a half mile.
