program. with matt o'donnell, tamala edwards, karen rogers and meteorologist, david murphy. >> ♪ >> good morning. it's 5:00 a.m. on this wednesday july 23rd. matt o'donnell is off, erin o'hearn is joining us. here's what's happening. >> accuweather is tracking a big hike in the heat and >> accuweather is tracking a late day thunderstorms. >> rescuers free a six week old baby who was locked in an suv. we have the video that you will only see right here on "action news." >> international flights into israel remain on hold as the violence in the middle east drags on and the death toll continues to climb. >> first up we're going to take a look at weather and traffic. let's talk with david murphy who is talking about really high heat and humidity today and matt pelman is in for karen. good morning. >> you can feel that sticky air building in during the day yesterday and you're going to feel it again today. it is going to be a little hotter. right now looking at not a lot going on on satellite. hazy sunshine expected to come up over the horizon and all eyes are on this area of precipitation.

that's in association with a cold front that will be making its way in our direction today and by late this afternoon the northern and western suburbs will probably start to hear some thunder maybe get gusty winds. 72 degrees is the current temperature if philadelphia. it is feeling muggy. 70 in allentown, 71 wilmington, 67 millville and 72 in sea isle city. and during the day we're expecting dewpoints between 65 and 70 and that means pretty darn humid air out there. some spots might even reach what we would call borderline oppressive humidity so take it easy during the afternoon. 9 o'clock 78, 87 by noon and by 3 o'clock, we're going to be at 92. we'll actually get a high of 93 probably around 3:30 or so and still be which he is to 90 by 6 o'clock. thunderstorms starting in the northern and western suburbs will be getting closer to philadelphia probably in the early evening hours and eventually to the shore later tonight. i'll have future tracker 6 detailing that and matt pelman of course we have to talk about better weather on the way once we get rid of this line of storms. >> all right, some light at the end of the very hot

tunnel. good morning to you mr. murphy. definitely doesn't feel refreshing out there this morning so i don't blame the construction crews packing up and heading out here along 95 in tinicum township delaware county. we're watching live right now as they pull away from the northbound lanes here by 420 and in the process they're reopening all those northbound lanes so headed up toward the airport now a clear shot as you come away from the blue route 476. other work zones on 95 and the schuylkill are out of the way speeds mostly in the 50's at this point but construction crews are still out and about on the pennsylvania turnpike westbound by the bensalem interchange taking out the left lane causing a little slowing as you head out toward willow grove. and they're still work ought northeast extension as well northbound past lansdale blocking the right lane there. we also have a broken down vehicle in towamencin township along sumneytown pike, 63 at village way and there's another work zone farther north on the northeast extension, again northbound side between quakertown and the lehigh valley taking out the right lane once again. burlington bristol bridge had plenty of construction

overnight. well, that construction is out of the way and all lanes back to normal there on the triple b. tam. >> okay, thank you, matt. israel is calling on u.s. and european aviation officials to allow airlines to resume their flights to the country. but despite that call, it's unclear when the flights to israel will actually start up again. airlines canceled their flights yesterday after rockets fired from gaza landed in a residential area about a mile away from ben gurion airport in tel aviv. israel continued its shelling of gaza. about 630 palestinians have been killed. the un says three out of every four of them were actually innocent civilians. 28 israeli soldiers and two civilians have died in all of the fighting. john kerry has just landed in jerusalem. he's there to continue his efforts to push for a ceasefire. >> the bodies from malaysia flight 17 are finally leaving an airport in ukraine for the netherlands. a ceremony at the ukraine airport took place moments ago before the plane headed off to

netherlands where the painstaking work of identifying the bodies will take place. u.s. officials say they have no direct evidence linking the russian government to the downing of malaysia flight 17. senior u.s. intelligence officials say the jet was most likely shot down by a russian fa11 surface to air missile. they believe the missile was fired by russian backed separatists in eastern ukraine most likely by mistake. the missile strike killed all 298 people on the plane. >> investigators have not decided on the exact charges against a local mother arrested after leaving her newborn in an suv while she went insides and shopped amount concerned crowd recorded this rescue and you're only going to see this video right here on "action news." "action news" reporter katherine scott is live outside of special victims unit. katherine we're just glad that this had a good ending. >> reporter: that's right, tam t the baby is okay. he was checked out at the hospital and places in his

father's custody. meanwhile investigators are working with the district attorney's office to try to determine what this mother is going to be charged with. let's go to that exclusive video obtained by "action news". it was shot on an "action news" viewer's cell phone who captured the video. it was around 6:30 monday evening outside the wal-mart on franklin mills boulevard. you can see people gathering there after a six week old boy had been locked in a toyota highlander. they're talk about breaking out window to retrieve the baby. after a few minutes police officer arrived. that was around the same time the chilled child's mother came out of the wall part. she was handcuffed and taken into custody. the firefighters got the keys and took that baby out of the car. witnesses were relieved the baby wasn't harmed. one witness saying she can't believe they continue to leave their infants in hot cars.

>> i was annoyed and aggravate because why would you leave the baby in the car and i didn't understand why they weren't breaking the windows out trying to look for keys. personally i would have busted the window in order to get the baby out quicker but it was just really hot and just not necessary to do that. >> reporter: and at this point it's not clear how long the baby was left there. the name of the mother has not been released yet. again, no word on what charges are going to be filed. we're live at the special victims unit, katherine scott channel 6 "action news." >> katherine thank you for that report. new this morning police in delaware county have released a sketch of the man who they say tried the lure a girl into his cars. investigators in nether providence. he told the girl he was delivering food and did not know the area and asked him to get into his car to help him. smartly she said no and walked away. if you think you recognize this man, call police. a court hearing is scheduled today for the suspect in a road rage

incident in delaware county. stanley williams is charged with stabbing a man at the sunoco a plus mini mart on macdade boulevard in collingdale yesterday. police say he and the victim had been arguing when williams pulled out a knife. the other man was rushed to the hospital with stab wounds to the arm. authorities say williams fled the scene but was caught a short time later. >> happening today, philadelphia mayor michael nutter will announce who will receiver the marion anderson this year. berry gordy received last year's marion anderson award. it honors artist who's have used their talents for the betterment of society. look for the marion anderson award announcement later on "action news" and on 6abc.com. >> always exciting to see the luminary that is they select. great ceremony. but not such great weather if you're heading anywhere today. >> yeah, it's going to be hot and humid today and late today and tonight we'll see thunderstorms moving in from the northern and western suburbs. as we take a look at storm tracker 6 live double scan

we're dry for your wednesday startup forecast and as we take a look outside we have sky 6 is the airport. everything dry and tranquil, not a lot of wind out there. of course there is humidity and it is muggy. yesterday we start add new deal here during the full forecast on "action news" in the morning and it's something we're calling the seven day always on for those of you with hd screens, we have a seven-day forecast, kind of a brief synopsis for you on the left-hand side of the screen so you can eyeball what's coming but in about 90 seconds we'll all take a look at the big seven day. 69 in trenton, 72 in philadelphia t as you look at these numbers remember it is muggy. that humid air that analyst yesterday is settled in place. sunshine early and up to about 2 o'clock probably not much going on but after 2 o'clock or 3 o'clock in the northern and western suburbs a few of you will start to see pop-up showers and storms. as we get into 8 o'clock another line is possible out there, maybe some stuff popping up closer to philadelphia and then as we go later into the nighttime period this begins to fill in

and comes in closer to 95 and eventually winds up over by the shore in the wee hours of the morning. some of these storms could produce drenching downpours and gusty winds and lots of lightning so be careful of that if you're out and about later tonight. hot and humid in allentown. late thunderstorms possible probably in the afternoon and then continuing into the early evening, 90 the high there. on the shore 86 degrees is your high, a little bit warmer on the beach. sun and clouds, humid, the ocean temperature's running in the mid 70's though and you want to keep the sunscreen handy for moderate to high u.v. indexes today and the high in philadelphia is 93 degrees. hot and humid. those late storms are possible in philadelphia probably holding off until later this evening. numbers are going to climb from the 70's up into the mid 80's by 11 o'clock and probably be in the 90's after 2 o'clock. your high today of 93 probably around 3:30. for the ball game tonight, 86 for the first pitch, 79 in the ninth inning. wouldn't be surprised to see a thunderstorm maybe in the later innings the way things are looking now. tomorrow it's still unsettled in the morning but that front

will get out of here so after a morning shower or thunderstorm it does look like in the afternoon we get the return of some sunshine. your exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, we're looking at 93 today, humid, hot and those late day and nighttime storms rolling down from the northwest. tomorrow a morning shower or storm can't be ruled out but we get some clearing in the afternoon and get back to 82 with lowering humidity. that will be a good day of transition and then friday sunny and nice with a high of 84 degrees. and really beautiful conditions for friday night if you're headed out to the union, the phillies or anything else you want to do on the town. saturday 88, sunshine and then 89 and a bit more humid with perhaps a spotty thunderstorm sunday, okay. >> looks pretty good. thanks, david. >> thank you david its now 5:10. we're following some developing news overseas. a typhoon roars ashore bringing with it powerful winds and torrential rains. >> a reward is now being offered in the case of a dog left chained to a fence. that dog nearly choked to death. matt. >> good morning, erin. nice quiet start here in chalfont bucks county along upper state road at limekiln

when it does come out it's going to get really hot today. it's going to feel like it's almost 100 degrees. >> matt just a moment ago you showed us a picture where you have the road all to yourself. are the suburbs looking that way overall or is there a little trouble? >> for the most part things are nice and open and clear so please be my guest, take advantage of the roadways. a lot of people do remain on vacation as it is mid to late july so it's definitely vacation season and that keeps volume a little bit lighter. as we head to the suburbs this morning i'll tell you who is out and about, the construction crews. they were working hard overnight. one of the spots they were working in was here on the ramps connecting 202, 422 and the schuylkill expressway, all part of that repaving project that they're doing in this area. but as you can see right now on the ramp from 202 northbound and 422 eastbound to the eastbound side of the schuylkill expressway all lanes are opened. you're free and clear as you travel through the king of prussia area on the ramps this morning. but if you're headed north watch out fundraise a few work zones an broken down vehicle

in towamencin township along sumneytown pike at village way. construction on the northeast extension northbound past lansdale blocks the right lane. as you get farther north they're blocking the right lane again between quakertown and the lehigh valley interchange. over on the new jersey turnpike in gloucester county have a southbound work zone near exit two taking out the left lane through 10:00 this morning and in hamilton township don't forget about our mill street closure that's lasting through the end of this week between route 40 and old harding highway, old harding highway gets you around it. time for the commuter report brought to you by the waze app. headed farther south on 295 in salem county towardd delaware memorial bridge one more work zone to watch outer for in pennsville. tam. >> thank you, matt and. it was a water search in allentown had a tragic ending. police say a man drowned while swimming with friends yesterday afternoon at the south mountain reservoir along tenth street. the victim's name has not been released but we know he's in his early 20's. police are treating this death as an accident. a pitbull is recovering

after bergeres crude almost choking to death. responding to a tip spca officers went to awe awbury park in north philadelphia there. they found the dog tied to a chain link enclosure with electrical tape an cable. the makeshift leash was too short for the dog to lie down and she was exhibiting signs of choking. officials are asking for help identifying whoever abandoned this dog. >> it is a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of this individual. this dog almost perished just being tied up there. >> now the dog is named venus and she's being treated at the spca's shelter hospital and they say they expect her to survive. >> turning to sports the phils will try to turn around their home series with the san francisco giants tonight after losing a tough one to the giants last night in 14 innings. san francisco's brandon crawford hit a bases loaded double in the top of the 14th to put the giants ahead eight to five. they went on to win nine to

>> ♪ >> this is breaking right now and coming in to us, the cher tan hotel in downtown center city has been evacuated after the smell of smoke forced officials the take emergency action. the action cam is live on that scene right now. investigators say smoke started coming out of the basement possibly caused by malfunctioning electrical breakers. there are no reports of injuries and crews are setting up fans to clear that air right now.

thunderstorms popping later in the afternoon. that may hold off until the evening in philadelphia and then eventually be down the shore around midnight or so tonight so thunderstorms dropping from north to south during the evening in particular. no delays big time delays anyway on the big board at the airport. and we've got no major precipitation this morning in any of our most frequently traveled destinations. good news, right, tam. >> indeed. thank you david. nearly 17 percent of children and adolescents in the u.s. are obese but an international survey finds they may not be aware of it. researchers examined the differences between actual weight and self reported weight for children between eight and 15 years old. and quite a few of them were not self aware. and overweight children 81 percent of the boys and and overweight children believed they were actually about the right weight and among obese children about half the boys and a third of the girls considered themselves again about the right weight. doctors say for girls and young women with cancer consulting with a gynecologist to discuss their reproductive future before or during
