>> ♪ >> "action news." delaware valley's leading news program. with matt o'donnell, tamala edwards, karen rogers and meteorologist, david murphy. >> good morning everyone. it's 6 o'clock. >> good morning everyone. developing this morning. >> philadelphia police say they are close to making an arrest in the killing of a young woman whose body was found in a duffle bag. >> a slip of the foot turns into a trip to the hospital for a man in philadelphia overnight. >> storms stick around for the southern part of the region this morning but accuweather is tracking a change to our rainy rut. >> karen's talking about that. she's until for david. matt is taking a look at track. good morning. >> good morning. we're starting with a flood advisory that's new this morning so let's show you the area that it covers and that's because of rain that's happening right now south and east of the city. so, this is until 8:15 this morning. the national weather service has a flood advisory posted because of heavy rain in cumberland ocean atlantic and

burlington counties in new jersey where you could see a half an inch to an inch of additional rainfall after everything that fell yesterday. let's look at storm tracker 6 live double scan radar showing exactly where the rain is. so, we could see we're dry in philadelphia, feels damp out here. the match maout of the rain stays south and east of the city this morning. as we go in a little closer we were watching this morning as that leftover tracked through millville. it's now in mays landing. look at the area of red. some very heavy rainfall. not seeing any lightning strikes at this second. this is live radar. as soon as it happens we see it. a few minutes ago i noticed eight lightning strikes in this storm so it is producing lightning. hammonton getting heavy rain. slowly lifting up to the northeast. something we're watching closely. satellite 6 and action radar showing the rest of us dealing with cloud cover. it's still horribly humid out here at least for the morning hours but this changes later this afternoon. let's show you what it's going to look like. by 9:00 a.m. 75 degrees lots of clouds, still humid, only rain south and east of the city. by and in, 81, everyone's dry.

you start to see more sunshine. by 3:00 p.m., it feels better with lowering humidity and we're dry, 85, more sunshine. that's the high for the day. by 6:00 p.m., 83. so, the first half of the day a lot different than the second half of the day and some new details coming in on the weather for the weekend so all that's coming up in just a minute matt. >> i bet you're ready to be bored for a few days, at least i know i am. good morning to you once again, karen. we have that heavy rain as camp has been saying coming down closer to the shore points but here in camden county we're looking pretty good along 42 by creek road. maybe a little tiny bit of drizzle but for the most part the roadway is just damp. northbound headlights we see a few more of them now headed up towards 295. so far though no major delays. no delays here on the roosevelt boulevard back in philadelphia by broad street, southbound come the headlights towards the schuylkill expressway moving along at a good clip. northbound between goodnall and grant both drivers are opened as that overturned vehicle crash and downed pole have been cleared out. there's still a downed pole in lower moreland closing byberry

road this morning between buck and pine roads. maybe stay up on county line or tomlinson to get around that. broken done vehicle on the southbound side of 476 the northeast extension about a mile approaching the mid county tolls taking out the right lane. you play start to see some slowing as you come down from lansdale towards plymouth meeting. upper providence watching a downed tree alongsider mill road at arc cola road. no issues so far on 422. >> philadelphia police may be close to making an arrest in the murder of a woman whose body was found sinufed a duffle bag. katherine scott is live in the mantua section of the city with more on what is next with this investigation. goodgood morning, katherine. >> reporter: good morning, matt. police do have a person of interest. they have been questioning. as they do that homicide detectives are waiting to execute a search warrant at this apartment building where both the victim and the person of interest lived.

23-year-old laura araujo and the person of interest in her murder lived at the same mantua apartment building at 40th and brown. araujo was a recent graduate of the art institute of philadelphia. she was born and raised in new york city. her parents have arrived to town and are searching for answers. >> she was very special because her main goal in life were related to religion. >> reporter: araujo was found monday morning in kensington beaten strangled and stuffed into a duffle bag. homicide detectives say her hands and feet had been bound. she was placed in a trash bag and wrapped in a blanket before being poured into that duffle. a few weeks ago araujo had moved out of a home on eighth and diamond where she had lived with two roommates. >> we know that she was looking for long term housing and she was responding to ads about apartments in different sections of the city. >> reporter: investigators believe araujo's murderer set her toyota rav4 on fire and left the vehicle on bambrey in

south philadelphia. "action news" has learned the 23-year-old person of interest has burns all over his body. he was picked up at crozer chester medical center. araujo's father says there have been no indication the last time he spoke to his daughter that anything had been wrong. >> she never talked about anything going on in her life. she never gave any signs of distress. >> reporter: and the name of that person of interest has not been released. we are hearing that charges could be filed as early as today. we're live in mantua, katherine scott, channel 6 "action news." >> katherine thank you for that. new this morning a man was rescued after falling into an uncovered hole in west philadelphia overnight. it happened around 1:30 in the morning on the 6100 block of vine street. the hole was part of street construction near the sidewalk. the man was that rushed to the hospital with a back injury. he's now in stable condition. and happening today, philadelphia city officials will join the family of a fallen police officer to

dedicate a mural in his memory. the mural honors officers chuck cass deal. it will be unveiled at the penncrest gym in northeast philadelphia during a ceremony at 6 o'clock tonight. officer cassidy was a 25 year veteran of the force who was killed while responding to a robbery in 2007. his killer is now on death row. >> new on "action news" an autopsy is that scheduled on a body discovered in a lehigh valley park. a family was walking through canal street park in the borough of northampton last night when they noticed a man face down in the lehigh river. they immediately called 911. police say they recovered the victim's bicycle, backpack, shoes and socks. right now they do not suspect foul play. >> tesla cars are pricey status symbols but a new report is knocking a little shine off the electric vehicles. maribel aber live at the nasdaq in times square with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning tam. a chinese company will actually pay you to hack a tesla.

they are offering a $10,000 prize in a contest to break into the computer system of tesla's model s. the company says it discovered a major software defect in the electric car and tesla says it's okay if the competition is designed to find flaws but warned against anyone trying to control its neck network or server. water saver. takes its name very seriously. the chicago false set company is limiting the amount of time employees spend in the bathroom. this is according to a complaint that was filed by the union. the union says workers are being disciplined for using the washroom for more than 60 minutes over a 10-day period. do the math. works out to six minutes a day that workers are given for bathroom breaks. talking stocks mixd day for the markets after federal reserve chairman janet yellin expressed concern about the evaluation of stocks. futures are higher this morning. lays will test a cappuccino clip. the company is rolling out for

expressway up near hammonton as well. so, really getting hit and i can start this in motion just to give you an idea. it's lifting up to the east-northeast and it's the been moving not very quickly just allowing the rain to really dump through the region so that's what you're getting right there south and east of the city of philadelphia. philly we're dry. let's head on outside. we're going to see what it looks like right now. we've got lots of clouds and it just feels horribly humid out there still. the change doesn't really happen until the second half of the day. so, at least we're dry in philly but south and east you got to watch for that rain. that temperature 73 degrees right now in philadelphia the. the dewpoint 67. and in some spots it's over 70. just feeling oppressively humid in much of the region. the winds have switched to the northwest but we haven't really been able to feel that lowering humidity just yet. the pressure is still falling. satellite 6 and action radar slowing here's the back edge of that front. that front has been plaguing us has not quite left the region. we're left with clouds, it's humid and you can see the stream of showers or in some case rainfall moving especially south and east of

the city of philadelphia. slowly this front is going to move during the day and things are going to get better for us and you can kind of see this happen on future tracker 6. at 10 o'clock in the morning still lots of cloud cover in the city and some showers hugging the coastline and then we advance this until the afternoon and we've got a good amount of sunshine through the day. it's going to take awhile to clear at the shore. you can see at 2 o'clock you're still kind of dealing with that but in philadelphia things get better and feel better in the afternoon as well. so, we're on our way. let's check the forecast. clouds to sunshine, a nicer afternoon in store, 85 degrees for your high. so breaking down the day, by 8:00 a.m., about 74 with lots of clouds. by 11:00 a.m., 79, maybe some peeks of sunshine. you're dry in philadelphia. by 2:00 p.m., 83. throws showers starting to exit the coastline at that point but feeling less humid everywhere else. and by 5:00 p.m., 84 degrees and feeling pretty good. so, if you're headed to the shore you're socked in the clouds, you've got rain at this point a thunderstorm. wait until the very end of the day to go outside. by 11:00 a.m., 78. by 3:00 p.m., it's starting to get better and 81 degrees.

>> ♪ >> welcome back. you're taking a live look here down the shore into cape may. 6:15. 73 degrees. when you walk outside the air will still have that sticky humid feeling. karen rogers says give eight few hours. by this afternoon that will break and it will feel pretty nice. >> see why traffic is almost like a spaghetti western this morning. here we go. >> i'm down the shore over the weekend. my mom meets this woman mary from wilmington who says i love the bridge roundup. so mary, this one's for you. get out your lassos. we're going to crack the whip. [laughter] >> thank you for the sound evenings roy. >> thank you for the sound time for the bridge roundup starting with the tacony palmyra bridge looking good so far this morning. no bridge opening scheduled at this point in the background little hard to see through the haze but the betsy ross bridge is also in the clear. not quite clear here on our good buddy ben, the ben franklin bridge. of course we still have the eastbound construction taking out the two right lanes and

what that means is coming westbound where we're usually busy in the morning you only have three lanes getting by headed in towards center city. that's been the setup all week this week and it has caused delays so we expect them this morning. the betsy or the walt might be better than the ben for your morning commute. this is the platt bridge over the schuylkill river. looking fine right now if you're headed to or from the airport but during the mid days the next couple days we go down to one lane here on the platt in each direction and one of the things they're doing is installing some new speed limit signs because we're going down to 35 miles per hour permanently on the platt. again, after those signs are installed today keep in mind you have to drop the speeds, a little slower than what you're used to. during the overnight hours on the burlington bristol they're doing construction. construction on the commodore today. westbound during the midday you'll have two lanes into pennsylvania just one lane into new jersey from 9:00 until 12:30.

into jersey on the commodore you could see delays. delaware memorial looks fine at this point in either direction between salem county and new castle county. that is your bridge roundup. tam back over to you. >> well done, matt pelman. >> thank you. >> firefighters are gaining ground against a destructive wildfire in southern oregon. a shift in the winds forced the fire back on itself and that's helping them out. the blaze destroyed six homes and 14 other buildings near the sprague river. many of the 100 residents who had been evacuated were able to return home. but the cause has not been determined. however, lightning has been ruled out. >> comcast is apologizing to a tech savvy customer from california because a comcast representative had spent 20 minutes on the phone trying to talk the customer out of canceling his service. ryan block posted eight minutes of the conversation online. it attracted more than 2 million hits. throughout most of the call the comcast employee refuses to take no for an answer. >> so, what is it about this other internet provider that's making it sounds so much

washington bridge and into new york city because several roads in that area were flooded. a flash flood in the town of madison maine swept that car into a gully. high winds and lightning toppled dozens of trees in the state. this one in the town of albans crashed through a woman's roof. look at that. the storm left thousands of households in maine without power. >> whereas they would normally spend an hour on the george washington bridge they spent several hours. always jammed up there. let's go to the northeast extension where we're seeing some slowing this morning. not as you start headed southbound by lansdale you're moving okay, speeds in the mid 60's. as you get towards the mid county tolls those speeds drop down to 40 because of a disabled vehicle approaching the mid county tolls that was blocking the right lane. they're in the process of getting that pushed off to the side. in morris township cumberland county watch out for a downed tree because of storms rolling through along 49 eastbound approaching hunters mill road. unlike yesterday so far we're

looking pretty good this morning on mass transit with no major delays at the moment. septa's cynwyd ryan line running unlike yesterday. >> double scan showing we're dry in philadelphia but you can see the rain that's south and east of the city. so we've got some heavy rain moving into cape may right now. in atlantic city you're just getting pounded right now. this is the garden state parkway, route nine, atlantic city expressway and this is slowly lifting up to the east-northeast. we have four lightning strikes just in this one area over the past couple minutes as well. storm tracker 6 live 3-d showing there's more to the south where that came from. so, the majority of the morning rain is south and east of the city of philadelphia and you can see that we dry out for the rest of us looking better as the day progresses. by 9:00 a.m., 75. just lots of clouds. you'll still get some rain on the coastline. by noon, 81 degrees. we're dry. we've got some sunshine mixing in. by 3:00 p.m. lowering humidity. feeling a lot better, 85. that's your high for the day and you'll be dry at the shore by 3:00 p.m., too. by 6:00 p.m., 83 degrees.

being treated for injuries stemming from a hazmat incident at a philadelphia public school. emergency crews responded to arts academy at bench run rush on the 11,000 block of knights road in the torresdale section around 7:15 last night in response to a report of chemical fumes coming from the basement. fire crews detected high readings of acid. this all may have come from a broken air conditioner. no evacuations were necessary. >> a princeton professor is getting an education in the justice system because he has been arrested. 67-year-old john mulvey faces theft charges. police say he stole 21 business signs from someone's lawn on rosedale road. they are worth nearly $500. mulvey is considered an expert in financial portfolio optimization. princeton university had no comment on the professor's arrest. >> 6:27 now and clear skies are coming from the second half of the week. accuweather update coming up next. >> developing overnight more air strikes in the middle east as an urgent warning goes out for residents

parts of cumberland atlantic ocean and burlington county. with our live radar we can see now 16 lightning strikes happening just within the past few minutes south and east of the city. we're dry in philadelphia. we go in just a little closer you're getting some heavy rain there. it's stretching from atlantic city up just northwest of surf city right now. it is slowly lifting to the north and east. it's going to take awhile for the front to clear and this rain to clear the coastline. but right now only raining south and east of philadelphia. you see a wider view of this radar. we're still stuck with the clouds but that stream of moisture still coming in because the front hasn't cleared yet but it does clear during the day. by 9:00 a.m., 75, dry in the city but still rain along the coast. by noon more sunshine, 81 degrees. by 3:00 p.m., you feel much better with lowering humidity, 85 degrees, sunshine and clouds. we should be dry about everywhere by 3:00 p.m. by 6:00 p.m. 83 degrees coming

down from your high of 85 so pretty good looking afternoon and the weekend's not bad, either. details on that coming right up, matt. >> my yard is going crazy with all this rain that's coming down and apologies to my neighbors. looking forward to drier days ahead. things are drying out on the roadways early on this wednesday morning but it's busy here on 95 by now. southbound side from the betsy ross bridge through this point at girard with no delay. it will be a 14 minute trip from woodhaven into the vine. that's what it is on the northbound side. sitting at 21 minutes now in the southbound direction. also starting to slow on the schuylkill expressway westbound by city avenue in the normal busy spot. 30 miles per hour. just three lanes available again this morning on the westbound ben franklin bridge headed in towards center city so as the morning progresses, we could see delays there and we're seeing delays right now on the southbound northeast extension, 476, because of a broken down vehicle approaching the mid county tolls. still taking out the right lane. expect those speeds in the 30's as you come down from lansdale. in lower moreland there's

"action news" has learned the 23-year-old person of interest was covered in burns. he was picked up at crozer chester medical center. as for that person of interest the name has not been released but we're hearing charges could be filed as early as today. we're live in man clue, what katherine scott channel 6 "action news." >> we know you'll keep us posted. thank you katherine. a south jersey father faces charges for a disturbing discovery made at a camden day care. police say 25 year old rakim williams tried to hide a fully loaded stolen handgun in daughter's diaper bag. a worker at the day care recovered the weapon yesterday morning. the fbi dug into its investigation into a decades old cold case murder. crews on the 300 block of eerie street came in with a backhoe, dump truck and jackhammers. neighbors say the search was focusing on the basement of a

home but the fbi will not say what, if anything, they have found. the area had been a hot bed for drug activity until a massive police crackdown back in november. and also new this morning, a berks county mother who is about to give birth is now behind bars charged with the murder of her 11-month-old son. "action news" reporter erin o'hearn is live at the big board with the full story. >> matt, this is a horrendous story coming out of reading. investigator say this young mother who is also eight months pregnant became frustrated with her infant's crying. police say while trying to settle him she became violent and injured him so badly he died days later. 20-year-old myra smith is behind bars charged with third degree murder for the death of her 11 month old son jeremiah rivera. police back in may first responders were dispatched to a nome reading where they found jeremiah unresponsive. the alleged abuse occurred a few days earlier. in court documents, smith admitted to forcefully grabbing her son off the floor and squeezing him near his

stomach when he wouldn't stop crying. this is obviously a tragedy on so many levels. an infant is dead and his mother is being held on $750,000 bail with just weeks left before she's expected to deliver another baby. tam. >> thank you, erin. developing out of the middle east israel has hit the gaza strip hard with airstrikes after hamas rejected an egyptian ceasefire proposal. in northern gaza the israeli military warned about a hundred thousand palestinians to clear out that more attacks are imminent. the message was delivered using automated calls and text messages. it's not clear though exactly where residents can go. the un shelters are full. health officials in gaza say israeli bombs have killed almost 200 civilians. one israeli has been killed by a palestinian mortar. the obama administration has israel has a right to defend itself. still dealing with some showers right now. >> yeah, and after so much rain already. it doesn't take much to have flooding concerns. that's why we have that flood advisory posted in south jersey. let's take a look right now at storm tracker 6 live double scan and you can see we're dry in philadelphia. it's south and east of the city we're getting the rain. you're getting lit in cape may right now and we go in a little tighter with our street level view and with double scan you can see why they've got that flood advisory posted. this is for cumberland parts of atlantic, southeastern ocean and burlington counties until 8:15 this morning. you're getting some heavy rain moving through. it's now hitting atlantic city. you can tell it's heavy by the areas of red and orange indicating some really good downpours as well as a few lightning strikes out of this storm. and were he can see that's moving just north of surf city as well. it's slowly pushing offer the coast. let's head outside and show you what it looks like in sky 6. looking at lots of clouds in philadelphia. let's check the numbers right now. it's still warm out there, that's for sure. that temperature 73 degrees. the dewpoint has been slowly dropping, 67 but feels humid

for the first half of the day. the winds switched to the northwest so the breeze will actually help when it picks up and the pressure 29.78-inches. satellite 6 and action radar showing we've got a good amount of clouds. that front that we have been tracking it's right here, it hasn't left yet and you can see the flow of moisture coming in ahead of that front from the southeast so we still have those showers most especially south and east of the city of philadelphia. and this front is going to squeeze all this out of here and by the second half of the day it's looking better. at 10:30 in the morning still some showers hugging the coastline. still clouds in philadelphia. and then we watch this progress during the day. we get more sunshine, lowering humidity and the showers eventually exit the coastline. this is a look at 2:30 in the afternoon. so, looking at the day ahead, by 9:00 a.m., lots of clouds and 75. by plan to, 81 degrees with some sunshine mixing in starting to feel better. by 3:00 p.m., 85, that's your high for the day and by 6:00 p.m., 83 degrees. so, we can see that's what it looks like during the day and it really depends on where
