good morning, america. breaking overnight, fatal shooting. a crazed gunman opens fire in this upscale houston neighborhood then leads police on a child chase. >> the car has yet to be stopped. >> officers throw down an a nail strip, corner the suspect, a dramatic hour's long standoff. how he finally surrendered and the hero victim who helped prevent more carnage. terror plot foiled. new details targeting two of the world's most popular tourist destinations, the eiffel tower and the louvre. how police took down the suspected terrorist. incredible rescue. the family stranded in the middle of the pacific ocean. their 1-year-old daughter sick and clinging to life rescued by the navy. now the parents are telling their side of the story for the first time. >> i can't make it. i can't make it. ♪ i will survive.

the decision and a lot of hopes being raised in cleveland. miami hoping to keep him. >> his hometown, they're keeping their fingers crossed. to that deadly shooting. six people killed. the suspect in custody after that long standoff. abc's ryan owens is in the houston suburb of spring, texas, with the latest. good morning, ryan. >> reporter: good morning to you, robin. behind me is the home where a total of seven people were shot. five of them children. one a 4-year-old little boy and when the gunman left the house, well, that's when things got even more dramatic. a dinnertime car chase through the crowded streets of suburban houston that ends in a standoff with a gunman in a cul-de-sac dotted with huge houses. frightened families forced out of their homes for nearly four hours. the mayhem started at 6:00 p.m. detectives say 34-year-old ron

lee haskell opened fire. authorities say he shot five children, plus two adult family members who were looking after them. a violent end to a domestic dispute he was allegedly having with his estranged wife who lives out of state. only one victim would survive, a 15-year-old girl. police say she called 911 despite being shot in the head and told them, the gunman was on the move. >> the car has yet to be stopped. >> reporter: she probably prevented more bloodshed. at 6:17 police catch up with haskell in this silver car after chasing him for four miles before throwing down a spike strip. >> the left rear tire is flat on the car. >> reporter: his tires blown, snipers corner him in that cul-de-sac. >> it's just a terrible thing. >> reporter: at 8:00 p.m. police bring in one armored vehicle then another sandwiching haskell's car for nearly two hours. >> he held a gun to his head so he has an active dialogue that we tured over to the hostage negotiation team.

>> reporter: then the conclusion before 10. he gets out of his car, hands over his head and police swoop in to finally end it. that gunman will face a judge first thing this morning. he will be charged with capital murder. george? >> okay, ryan, thanks very much. we'll get the late ever on the border crisis and president obama meeting with rick perry in an attempt to find some common ground to stop the surge of children crossing the border from central america. jon karl covering it. the president is still taking heat for not actually going to the border. >> reporter: the president has been hammered over and over again by democrats and republicans for going all the way to texas and not going the extra miles to get to the border but after arriving last night in dallas he stood his ground. >> there's nothing that is taking place down there that i am not intimately aware of and briefed on.

this isn't theater. this is a problem. i'm not interested in photo-ops. i'm interested in solving a problem. >> reporter: although he didn't go to the border he did spend nearly two hours with rick perry, the governor of texas including 30 minutes one-on-one. george, he is pleading with perry to support his bid to get $4 billion or nearably $4 billion from congress to deal with the problem. >> jon, in the meantime, the president also seemed to say he was open to sending the national guard to the border which critics have been calling for. any chance of finding common ground here? >> reporter: there isn't much chance with his big proposal. i haven't heard a single prominent republican come out to support miss plan to get the money to provide for children on the border and rick perry last night was cite critical of the president's plan. >> jon, thanks very much. to the escalating violence in the middle east. rockets falling on both sides of the border with the gaza strip

and possibly ground invasion. alex marquardt is in gaza city for us this morning. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning, robin. the israeli air force stepped up its air strikes overnight pummeling the gaza strip. the death toll here quickly growing with more than 800 israeli strikes so far in this operation as hamas and other militant groups fire rockets further and farther into israel. in gaza the ground shaking israeli air strikes rained down with drones and jets targeting militants and rockets often destroys much more. so far, around 80 palestinians killed. the vast majority civilians, this morning, eight members of a single family mistakenly killed. we've seen the destructive power of the strikes up close. here the three-story family home of umsami now a pile of rubble. "there is no reason to attack my

house" she told me angrily. "there are no militants here." terrified civilians fleeing to shelters for cover. over the past three days, more that 250 rockets and mortars have been fired from the gaza strip. hamas now able to reach 100 miles away with its powerful arsenal. but so far, no israelis have been seriously wounded. and israeli military officials told me they've mobilized 20,000 reserve troops so far for a possible ground invasion that israel's president says could come soon turning this no a much longer and bloodier conflict. robin? >> which is the great concern right now, alex, thank you. now to "gma weekend" anchor dan harris with the morning's other top stories. >> good morning, everybody. we'll start with breaking news. police in tennessee have taken a teenager into custody after shooting inside this national guard armory near nashville. a target and 20-year veteran was killed shot in the chest.

no word on a motive or how the shooter got into the building. overseas there's word that authorities in france have foiled a terror plot targeting the eiffel tower and louvre. the plot in the early planning stages was uncovered last year when police say they intercepted messages between al qaeda and an algerian butcher living in france. this has prompted french lawmakers to consider new laws to expand police powers there. new details about a frightening headline out of iraq. concerns that sunni militants may have seized nuclear material from a university in the city of mosul. this morning, international experts believe the material is low grade and does not pose a significant threat. a massive new data breach to tell you about this morning involving the federal government. hackers broke into computer networks that ham government american knell records and specifically targeted employees who had applied for top security clearances. one report says they were chinese, it is unknown what information was taken, if any.

for the wild ride to the hospital for delivery and linsey davis is this under the category of too soon for you? >> i was having flash backs and almost reduced to tears. the mom is pregnant with their third child and she actually works as a childbirth edge indicator. the dad loves to use it while biking and surfing. he thought it was only natural to strap it to his head for the birth of his child. childbirth is often videotaped but not quite like this. the gopro camera was intended to document the ride to the hospital with his pregnant wife kristin but it caught so much more. >> i knew i wanted to get this birth on camera. i had no idea it would happen. >> reporter: almost two weeks past her due date kristin knew she didn't have much time before he baby arrived. >> i now there was no way i

could make it. >> reporter: watch as troy high-tails it to the hospital. >> his head is right -- >> reporter: they arrive at the hospital but it's too late. right there outside the hospital -- >> get a doctor out here. >> reporter: a curbside delivery. >> i got him. i got him. >> as soon as a little bit of shock wore off in the beginning, i just felt really relieved to finally be in my arms and healthy and see his face. >> i love. oh, baby. i love you. >> we got it on video. >> did that really just happen? >> did that really just happen? this was actually their third baby. kristin was scheduled to be induced the next day, typically childbirth is 13 hours. it lasted one hour and only pushed twice and the baby popped out. >> oh, my goodness. >> like not edited because it's

>> reporter: this morning police are studying surveillance cameras to retrace the last steps of 31-year-old maggie daniel, teacher, coach and motion recently a counselor at this high school near charlotte, north carolina. this newly released image shows her shopping with a friend at walmart hours before her death two weeks ago. >> we're trying to narrow it down and pin the point where she was and on that day, the 27th. >> reporter: neighbors found the 2011 teacher of the year dead in her apartment. >> she was in there laying down. i didn't even want to touch her. >> is she alive or not. >> i'm not sure at all. >> reporter: investigators will not say how she was killed only that there was no sign of forced entry. not a surprise because neighbors say she often left her front door open for students to stop by. >> i would say the police are looking at every person that she regularly has associated with, had contact with and probably

the two weeks prior to her death. >> this former student says he saw daniels the day before her body was found. >> just taking out her trash and i said hey and she said hey and i told her to have a good day and last time i saw her. >> reporter: students gathered at her former school for a memorial service. >> she had that personality that connected her with students and adults. >> reporter: police say no suspects and no answers why someone would kill an educator beloved by so many. for "good morning america," gio benitez, abc news, america. >> incredibly tragic. to that family rescued at sea by a u.s. navy warship three months ago speaking out for the first time this morning in an exclusive. the parents were called irresponsible for bringing their young children on the trip and cecilia vega has that story for us. >> reporter: it was a trip eric and charlotte kaufman spent

years planning, sailing all the way from mexico to new zealand with their two young daughters. >> how long was that supposed to take? >> about 3,000 miles. >> reporter: but 18 days in it came to a crashing end. they that they were stranded in the pacific ocean 900 miles off shore. their 1-year-old daughter sick and in dire need of rescue. >> that's when we realized we entered a very bad spot. >> reporter: the parents who face harsh criticism for bringing their children on that adventurous sea this morning are telling their story for the first time. why bring them on this trip? >> why -- why wouldn't you? >> this is how we are living. >> reporter: lira had fever and a rash. the antibiotics they brought weren't working. it was only getting worse. what did you do? >> we grabbed the emergency position indicating beacon and activated it and then we sat there.

>> reporter: 12 hours after they hit that button national guardsmen parachuted out of a plane into the frigid waters to save this baby. >> to see people show up is amazing. >> members of the 129th rescue wing stabilized her. they believe she had typhoid or salmonella but the journey wasn't over. it took three more days for the "uss vandergrift" to reach them. only then did they learn about the firestorm of online criticism. the word ka kept coming up was the word reckless. what do you say to that? >> we're both experienced sailors and raised our daughters on a sailboat. we were very prepared. we knew what we were doing. >> reporter: they plan to sue their satellite phone carrier that cut off their only connection to land while stranded. they hope any money they mite win will help pay back taxpayers for the cost of the rescue and

of "brooklyn nine-nine" which was the golden globes winner but the real shock is in lead actress in a drama series where tatiana maslany again does not get nominated for "orphan black" despite the fact thee plays, what, four characters, five characters, lizzy caplan, a real surprise for "masters of sex," fantastic news for her and nothing for elisabeth moss from "mad men" after a fantastic season that included that dance with jon hamm's -- don draper's character to "my way." big surprise. >> how about the big league for "game of thrones," what is it, 19? >> this is a show that never quite gets the love when they pass out the nominations. they pass out the awards but nominations are always great. had a great season and fantastic finale. >> somewhere amy robach is rejoicing, big fan of that program. >> somewhere is wearing like some weird cloth and they're going over a mountain and they're very happy. >> jim parsons will be tough to beat. >> he will and so is julia

connelly, one packed category. >> this one is just loaded because you've got bryan cranston getting nominated again. if he won for another time it would be four for him but he hasn't won since 2010. and he's up against matthew mcconaughey, a lot of people think matthew mcconaughey's performance in "true detective" because it aired during the oscar voting last year, kind of helped him to win the oscar because people said, wow, that's not just a fluke he can bring it. so now he's in that category against cranston. cranston may be looking for that gold watch, that final win for number four. you know, and mcconaughey really strong performance and also up against woody harrelson in that same show but look at that category. kevin spacey, jon hamm who can't seem to buy a win in this category. maybe next year we'll see him as the show goes and last year's winner, jeff daniels who surprised everybody so we'll see what happens. >> do you think it's bad news for the "breaking bad" that "true detective" entered into the drama category -- >> they threw down the gauntlet. great news for "fargo" and

"american horror story coffin" they're not competing against "true detective" but it's hard to say. was last year's award for "breaking bad" their gold watch because the night the emmys ran last year was the night that the second to last episode of "breaking bad" aired. >> a long time ago. >> was that their victory lap or get another one almost a full year after the show went off the air? so that's -- everything in drama is up for grabs right now. it's a big fight against shows that people really love and care about. >> that is. people get so passionate about these shows. i'm one of them but to see "mad men" the way it is and elisabeth moss, that blew my mind. >> two years without getting a win. >> what is that about? >> i think it's a more beer for us situation. it's like they got everything. they got everything for so long and now let's spread it around a little bit. with that final season coming maybe there will be a reconsideration next year but maybe this isn't the year for them. >> i feel more beer for us all
