wind is pretty bad. >> flash flooding up. and even a reported tornado. the northeast, hit by storms as it braces for arthur, with the weather ruining holiday travel. drivers slowed by rain. flights canceled. our extreme team out in it all. a helicopter team saving a hiker trapped 5,000 feet up. afraid he wouldn't be able to hold on for long. the chopper, just ten feet from the rocks. how they pulled him to safety. ♪ wiggle, wiggle, wiggle

a live shot of virginia beach. you can see the heavy surf there. and they are really feeling the wind as it is passing by to the east, this hour. >> and look at this. the eye of the storm from space. this storm is literally 400 miles wide. >> so many people impacted by hurricane arthur. let's get to our coverage. our extreme team has it all. we begin with ginger, who is tracking the storm and where it is this hour. >> yep. we're looking at the satellite. a hurricane, obviously. a category 2. there it is. and you can see it off the coast, the eye of it. the brunt will be affecting not too many folks anymore. but the outer bands, touching on new jersey. it will meet up with a cold front. and it will affect a ton of people along the east coast today. but not directly. the core stays out in the ocean. the cape will get brushed.

you'll see parts of canada later. it stays very strong. but going to hit a lot of cold water and have the sweeping motion of a cold front coming through. these will expire quickly. but keep the tropical storm warnings and the hurricane warnings for a couple of hours for virginia beach. and this is the tropical storm warning for the cape and nantucket. we are tracking, still, 100-mile-per-hour winds. now, we want to go to david kerley. >> hey, ginger. you know from covering hurricanes, occasionally you're in place for the eye of a hurricane. that's exactly what happened this morning for us. it passed right over us. you see the waves being whipped up. the backbackslide, a lot of raid a lot of wind. arthur makes landfall with winds in excess of 100 miles per hour

and battering rains. sparks flied as transformers flared, leaving towns without power. we were in the middle of it in the night. the sand is just coming to my face. this woman's umbrella didn't stand a chance. the storm, also bringing widespread flooding. some drivers forced to pull over. it's 100-mile-per-hour winds. this is the leading edge of the storm. a reported tornado tearing through rose hill, north carolina. this man's ceiling collapsing just as he got his family out of the way. >> when i got my kids. >> reporter: with arthur moving up the coast and more than 400 miles wide, folks are bracing for impact. >> anticipating hurricane-force winds. >> reporter: this is an area just down the road, that was actually evacuated, cape hatteras. a lot of folks are hoping if the

weather gets better, they can come back. but this storm is moving north. there's still going to be places hit by arthur. we're going to go to virginia beach, where they are feeling hurricane arthur at this hour. that's where we find alex perez this 340r7bing. >> good morning, amy. the eye of that hurricane just east of us. those waves raging. some people coming up, curious to see what's going on here. i want to give you an idea of what officials here are doing. the big lifeguard towers. they have put them down across the beach sideways to prevent them from flying away. blowing away. one of the other concerns here, of course, wind gusts. up to 50 miles per hour in some areas. and the rain. it rained through the night. and it is expected to continue raining today. another thing to worry about here, tornadoes. there was a tornado watch in the overnight hours. the big fireworks show here at

virginia beach has been postponeden postpon postponpostpon postponed until saturday. >> all right. alex perez, so many holiday plans shifted or having to change because of the hurricane. >> the hurricane not volcano having a major impact on east coast travel. but it's having a ripple effect across the country. bazi kanani is at reagan national airport. >> reporter: this is expected to be the busiest weekend for fourth of july travelers. and for many, it's off to a rough start. a double-whammy, for many of the 41 million americans on the move this weekend. drivers in the northeast are dealing with heavy rains and flooding on the road. amtrak says power outages and

downed trees delayed their times last night. and they expect more today. hundreds of flights have been canceled in the northeast because of hurricane arthur. and that leads to delays elsewhere as connecting flights are affected. i just checked the board here at reagan national in d.c. so far, only about a dozen or so flights canceled. >> having an impact on all sorts of travel out there. ryan smith is with us for the latest on the news. >> happy independence day. happy fourth of july. a major recall breaking overnight, just as so many of us light up the grills. foster farms recalling contaminated chicken. the chicken has a use or freeze by dates between march 21st and 29th. and was sold in nine western

states. the stubborn fire in california wine country. most evacuated are able to return home. but east of san diego, fireworks are canceled after a wildfire broke out near julian. two homes were destroyed. and a tragic start to the holiday, after a trailer carrying fireworks exploded. one person was killed. he was a respected town doctor. this morning, the house is a total loss. but everyone did get out safely. and look at this video. this is from brazil, showing the moment an overpass, built for the world cup, collapsed. look at the damage. two week people were killed.

others were crashed. that's a gas pump hose still attached to a car. the hose, coming close to other cars. no word on how long it took for the driver to find out it was there. but it's sparking as it goes. finally, meet the nation's new powerball millionaire. his name is roy cockrum. look how happy he was. the thing is, he took a vow of poverty as part of a episcopal religious order. so, he's giving the money to organizations and other charities, like that. >> that's the lawyer, dan. >> the vow of poverty. maybe he's just saying he's giving enough but taking a little for himself. >> a $20, $50. >> honorable.

now, to the amazing images of the cruise ship that capsized two years ago. lama hasan has that story. >> reporter: this morning, newly released video shows an eerie scene inside the "costa concordia." here, winding up a case of stairs inside the vessel. a reception area how it was left. when passengers fled for their lives. this bar shows the stools in place. and dust and debris floating everywhere. emerging from the water into the atrium of the ship. murals still prominent on the walls.

it's been more than two years since the ship slammed into a rock off the coast of italy. that minute, she started flooding and tilting. then, an announcement telling the passengers to remain calm. >> this is terrible. >> reporter: twice the size of the "titanic." we saw how they began halling it show up. it weighs least 100,000 tons. later this month, the vessel will be flown to a airport part and scrapped. but the lingering images can be the final haunting pictures from inside the ship. >> stunning images there. now, to the desperate search for a pregnant california woman. she's been missing for a week now. her marine husband says she was going to joshua tree national park.

researchers and homicide investigators are now looking for her. and abc's david wright has the very latest. >> reporter: this morning, a massive manhunt for erin corwin. 19 years old and 3 months pregnant. she vanished without a trace saturday morning, as what police describe as suspicious circumstances. homicide investigators now leading the search in joshua tree national park. >> what do you mean she's missing? i just tore up. >> reporter: corwin's mother talked with the it fill yat. >> you hope maybe there's some news. >> reporter: on monday, authorities found her car in 29 palms, not far from the marine corps basey her husband, lance corporal jonathan corwin, is stationed. he reported her missing sunday.

helicopters and ground search teams have failed to find any sign of her in the scorching desert. police say they don't believe a crime has been committed. but they have not ruled out foul play. >> interviewing people, tracking. looking for specific evidence. >> reporter: the family has set up a facebook memorial page, praying that someone will help them find her. >> i'd give anything to give her a hug right now. >> reporter: for "good morning america," david wright, abc news, los angeles. >> our hearts go out to erin's family. >> suspicious circumstances. homicide investigators. not a good sign. newly released video shows a helicopter team in washington state, saving a hiker at 5,000 feet. worried he wouldn't be able to hang on. reena ninan has the story.

>> reporter: climbing the mountains near snoqualmie county, washington state, isn't for the faint of heart. >> 11:30. >> reporter: on monday night, one headacher found out the hart way. and every vertigo-inducing moment, caught on day. the strandened climber calling 911, saying he was 5,000 feet up. >> there is not much room. get me down there. and we'll see how this works. >> reporter: first on the scene, was the helicopter rescue team. just ten feet, the rescuers lowered down on a cable. after a new words with the climber. soon, they are hoisted up towards the helicopter.

dangling over the mountains. it's a scene right out of a movie. once lifted into the chopper, we can't see what anyone's saying. but the relief on the face of the rescued climber says it all. moments later, the successful rescue ends with a handshake. >> all in a day's work? wow. >> that was incredible. there's always stunning plays at wimbledon. eugenie bouchard is the star. and lara is there with her story. good morning. >> good morning to you, amy and dan. and she is aggressive and fearless. bouchard can no longer be called the next big thing.

she has officially arrived. two years ago, she was wimbledon's junior champion. she's now poised to take the whole thing. >> i'm a believer. >> at just 20 years old, genie bouchard is taking wimbledon by storm. many expected she would be a champion in the future. but it turns out, the time is now. thursday, she was crushing her third-ranked opponent to qualify for her first grand slam final. >> i expect good results for this. it's a step in the right direction. >> reporter: now, the 13 seed is one step away from dinning the biggest title of them all. thanks to her model good looks and smile, bouchard is gracing

at satellite and radar, there's hurricane arthur coming up the coast. we're looking at heavy bands pushing into parts of south jersey and southern delaware. generally speaking rain is worst closer you are to the shore, but the looks like it's going to end quickly by the afternoon. later this afternoon we have high of 80 and sun coming back, great for fireworks tonight and saturday and sunday looks good with sunshine and highs in the 80s. the action cam is live on the benjamin franklin parkway, the skies should be clear in time for the wawa welcome america festivities this evening. 500,000 people are expected for the largest outdoor free concert in america. matt pellman is in for karen, you'll see karen on the parkway later tonight for the jam on the parkway. tell us about the roads? >> reporter: they are restricting the vine eastbound ramp to the parkway.

what every parent needs to know before heading to the beach or the pool this holiday weekend. and abc's sara haines is celebrating the fourth at the birthplace of our nation. >> i'm outside of independence hall where the declaration of independence was signed july 4th, 1776. we're kicking off our festivities here with our affiliate, wpvi. >> no colonialwear? i was expecting a martha washington look or something? no? no? >> no. >> we're happy to have sara anyway. we begin with the shocking details of the father charged with murder for leaving his son in that hot car. prosecutors laying out the case against him on thursday. and abc's steve osunsami has the story. >> a child left out in the car for over seven hours. >> reporter: at times, justin

ross harris wiped away tears, as prosecutors laid out their shocking case. accusing him of leaving his 22-month-old son, cooper, to die in a hot car, on purpose. >> did he call 911? >> he did not. >> reporter: at a hearing, where harris was denied bond and told he could face the death penalty, the lead detectives said harris told them he forgot to drop his son off at day care. but they have receipts from a chick-fil-a restaurant, a mile away, before going to his office. >> how did the child appear? >> the child appeared wide awake and happy. >> reporter: police say harris strapped cooper in his car seat at 9:19 a.m. they say surveillance video shows the parked suv. the child harris allegedly forgot in those six minutes was inches away and hard to miss. while his son was dying, police say records show harris was busy

messaging lewd pictures of himself, to women who were not his wife, including one that was 17. two months ago, harris were reading posts on an online forum about child-free. something his attorney says he stumbled upon. police say harris knew a hot car could kill, after watching these safety videos just days before his son died. warning of the dangers of leaving a child in a hot car. >> please call 911. >> reporter: investigators said that harris and his wife had two life insurance policies on their own. one for $25,000. harris' attorney argues the boy's death was a mistake. saying that harris is deaf in his right ear. >> his mind went elsewhere. >> reporter: a witness for harris testified that when the

father pulled into this parking lot after discovering his life lesson, he seemed genuinely distraught. >> i heard the desperate cries of a father who just lost his son. >> reporter: for "good morning america," steve osunsami, marietta, georgia. >> let's bring dan in this case. it's so disturbing. police charging harris with felony murder. as we're starting to hear some of the evidence, it sounds like premeditated murder. >> and you heard the detective say that he believes there was intent here. when you look back at the fact that the detective is saying they may have had a motive, which may have been money. and he's bringing in the mother, as well. they were having financial problems. they have a life insurance policy on the child. he's looking at child-free forums. looking at videos of what happens in a hot car. police piecing this together, to

believe this was premeditated. >> and among the evidence we heard yesterday, as you referred to, implicating the mother, perhaps. are you expecting an arrest in this case? >> they're going to need a little more. but one of the most startling moments came when the detective testified that the mother goes to child care. shows up to pick up her son. they say, your husband never dropped off your son. immediately, the first thing she says is, he must have left him in the car. instead of saying, maybe he took him to lunch. the first thing she thinks of is oh, he must have left him in the car? police also talked about the conversations the two of them had. i think they may change the theory of this case. it's possible the mother could be implicated. >> so much more in this case. you'll be following it for us. now, to a pool party that got out of control, thanks to social media. a texas housing manager is facing a huge fine for his bash

after a hash tag went viral online, drawing 2,000 people to his pool party. abc's nick watt had the story. >> reporter: here's what happens when a social media marketing campaign is just too successful. >> it was insane. it was packed. all you could see were heads everywhere. people in the pool. >> reporter: last saturday, 2,000 reportedly boozy revelers, showed up in a pool designed for 750 people, max. drawn from around the country by a hash tag that went viral, landing the venue in hot water because they hadn't applied for a permit. >> people were drunk in the water. that's not a good combination. not a good mix. >> reporter: nfl star brian holloway showed gio benitez his upstate new york house after word of a party spread.

in may, teens trashed a mansion in ontario. mercifully, no one got hurt this week. the party promoter told us the permit was, quote, out of our hands. and there was security to keep it safe. >> you can't always say, all's well that ends well. >> reporter: it took nearly every off-duty police officer in town to shut the pool party down. reached out for comment, no reply. and organizers say there will be no next time. for "good morning america," nick watt, abc news, los angeles. >> you know you're getting old when that does not look like fun. >> some people don't get the power of social media yet. >> it works too well. >> yeah. let's check in, now, with ginger, because the weather is going to be a big issue for all of the pool parties that may or may not be happening across the

and we are back, now, at 7:43, with the secrets of lifeguards. the startling story all parents need to see on this holiday weekend, when so many of us are heading to the pools and the beaches. it turns out your children may not be safe, even if there's a lifeguard on duty. reena ninan has that story. >> reporter: good morning, amy. you expect the lifeguards to protect you and your children from the perils at the pool. but we found out, that isn't always the case. lifeguards. buff and brave. ready to jump in at the first sign of danger. right? well, maybe not always. meet 23-year-old harris, a former lifeguard at several

pools in texas. he's blowing the whistle on what he says are shocking secrets of life on the lifeguard tower. >> a lot of lifeguards are not prepared for something bad happening. >> reporter: roughly 4,000 americans drown each year. and one in five children that brown in swimming pools, do so with a lifeguard present. there are examples of lifeguards behaving badly. look at this lifeguard, tuning out the pool and listening to his ipod. >> no lifeguard should be given electronic equipment. no texting or talking on the phone. >> reporter: worst is this guard. he's gone into hibernation mode. no one is swimming. and it's challenging to spot a kid drowning, as i found out myself, with a test dummy, named timmy. how hard can this be? timmy is at the edge of the

pool. a spot where wall huggers drown. i never saw it. never once. we put these young lifeguards to the test with our mannequin, timmy. remember 18-year-old blake has no idea this is a drill. in less than five seconds, blake sees something. and explodes into action. did you think it was a real kid drowning? >> i'm just scanning the waters, and i see something out of the norm, i go check it out. doesn't make a difference to me. >> reporter: what should you look out for? and how many lifeguards are on duty? and who is paying attention? check out clear the water is. dirty or cloudy. it's impossible to spot a swimmer in those types of circumstances. and experts remind us, don't be afraid to confront management. it's so uncomfortable to do that. but it's better than dealing with a trip to the e.r. or even worse. >> one of five kids who drown
