>> good morning everyone, it is 6:00 a.m. on this friday, the 4th of july. developing this morning. >> hurricane arthur roars ashore pounding the north carolina coast with whipping winds and drenching rains. >> the crowds have arrived at the jersey shore ahead of the holiday weekend. accuweather is tracking hurricane arthur along the coastline. >> the sun is up, they are getting ready for the 4th of july festivities. 4th of july forecast david murphy and matt pellman filling in for karen rogers. >> reporter: hurricane arthur is barrelling up the coast and still on a track that will take it well off our coastline. the closest that we have right

now in terms of rain is off to the north and west ahead of a frontal boundary we've been dealing with, not a whole lot of rain directly from the storm a little bit spinning off through cape may and atlantic county. not a whole lot right now. as we go into the morning and the afternoon, we're looking at the flood watch it's still up for south jersey and delaware, because that's where if we get any bands from arthur that's where we would see them. we have an issue with rip currents with the storm off our shore. remember if you get caught in a rip current. don't panic, keep your wits, and swim north or south and parallel to the beach, and you will get out of the rip currents and get back to shore. 73 degrees is the current temperature. cloudy skies, a little bit damp in spots as you just saw. as we roll through the day, it's going to be a day of change. it's changing in a good way.

76 by 9:00 a.m., 79 by noon, once we get past by lunchtime we'll see drying, 80 is the high by 4:00 p.m. back to 77 by 6:00 p.m. with lowering humidity and increasing sunshine the later afternoon hours look good. i'll have the rest of the weekend call coming up. >> reporter: you know how i feel about leftovers, i don't like them. we have leftovers from last night. septa airport and regional lines were not running because of signal problems. they are running shuttle buses between the city and the airport if that's the line you're going to take. no service to substitute for the newark/wilmington line, use the 101 or 1 oh, 2 trolley. -- 102 trolley.

hop on a bus or take a cab. holiday schedules on the regional rails means a sunday schedule. still working on a crash approaching 202 on schuylkill expressway. you're feeling independent on most of the these roads, i-95 looks fine. kelly drive will close for the independence day regatta. the inner drives. benjamin franklin parkway are closed as are the ramps leading to it. expect chestnut street to be blocked at independence mall. indian trail road is blocked by the lighthouse church stay on railroad avenue or the garden state parkway as alternates. >> developing this morning, hurricane arthur spent the night and this morning lashing the coast of north carolina. the storm made landfall before midnight with 100-mile an hour winds people reported seeing

waves as high as 35 feet. the storm brought several inches of drenching rain and caused widespread power outages and reports of tornados. no immediate reports of injuries. although they will not experience the full brunt of arthur, its effects will be felt along the shore, eva pilgrim is live in atlantic city with more on that. >> reporter: good morning, tam, we've got a little bit of rain coming down right now. not a whole lot, just kind of an annoying rain. if you look at the beach, we can see the beach, now that the fog is starting to lift and the sun is up. you can see the whitecaps on the waves coming in. they are very cloud and chunders up with the conditions offshore. while arthur is not expected to bring the brunt to the jersey shore, he'll have an impact on the festivities today. take a look at what it looked

like yesterday. the winds whips the flags around, causing issues for swimmers raising concerns for rip currents. shore towns are bringing in extra lifeguards to deal with the extra crowds and rough waters. in ocean city, the lifeguards kept the swimmers close to the beach. >> rougher with the all the weather and the wind. >> if it gets crappy with the wind and the weather my husband will be happy with the waves to surf, we'll be entertained and drink and be merry. >> reporter: back here live, that's the at -- at toot most people are having, most people are making a point not to let mother nature ruin their holiday now, many shore towns keeping an eye on what happens as far as weather goes, there's a lot of

custody in the lehigh valley after slamming into a tobacco shop. the stolen suv crashed into the store yesterday morning. the suspect sped off in a chef chef -- chevy blazer. store shelves were knocked over and nobody was hurt. the suspect faces cheferl charges. -- several charges. the dow jones told me 17,000 for the the first time. a california company issued a major food recall there were salmonella in chicken breasts made by foster farms. it is only sold on the west coast him. surging prices on beef, bacon and ice cream are to blame

and tam's parade? >> reporter: a little iffy, but it won't happen all the time. we have rain off to the north and west, there's a little bit creeping up to cape may. as we come in tighter you can see this is moving from the southwest to the north/northeast it's basically moving in a line through places like berks county and lancaster and areas close to allentown, earlier, allentown, bethlehem and easton are getting this. there's steady rain in there highlighted in yellow, but it's not a steady downpour. i want to drop down to the south, there's lighter stuff along the shore. i talked about heavier bands coming up this is rain attached to arthur. this is an outer rain band as this pushes up cruel -- you'll get steadier rain down the shore. there also the shore, it's not

great beach weather right now, it's warm and muggy. 73 degrees in philadelphia. along the beach, 72. 72 in wilmington, 67 in allentown, feeling comfortable there, but everybody is dealing with the relatively sticky air. future tracker 6 showing between now and 9:00 a.m., we have the chance of showers and maybe a thunderstorm popping through areas close to the coast and we can't rule out, matt and tam, some of the stuff making it up into the i-95 corridor and perhaps into the vicinity of center city where these guys will be doing their broadcast. this is 9:00 a.m., i think you guys start add -- start at 10:00 a.m., according to future tracker we may see the rain pushing away and toward the northeast. afternoon the cloud cover sweeps off and during the afternoon we expect the return of sunshine and with that drier air comes

lower humidity. allentown, a nice afternoon, 77 degrees, lowering humidity that's comfortable. it will be breezy across the region, including in allentown. at the shore, 72 at noon, 76 by 3:00 p.m. you may have to wait longer down the shore to get the clouds out, by 12:00, 1:00, most of the showers should be done and you will get some drying. a little bit cool in the water, of course you've got the rip currents anyway, so it's not a great day to be in the water. this afternoon, high of 80. temperatures will climb from the mid 70s up to the upper 70s, not a lot of change increasing sunshine and lowering humidity. the fireworks looking good for that, isn't it fortunate that arthur is moving away and we're able to get this stuff in. partly cloudy to mostly clear skies, northerly breeze. 77 at 7:00 p.m., 70 at

11:00 p.m. arthur a hurricane down to category 1 after being briefly a category 2. 100-mile an hour winds. always it pushes past us, it will be far enough out to sea, it will give us a little bit of rain, heavy in the morning and less in the afternoon. we're looking at rip currents the rest of the day and this evening. clearing today that's the call for the 4th of july, high of 80. lower humidity. sunny and nice on saturday, 83. another super day on sunday with a high of 87. it will be hotter on monday, though, and gradually more humid we'll get back into the soup by tuesday and beyond and there will be thunderstorms next week, too, but a great weekend and generally speaking for the past comf -- couple of months the weekends have been good.

tonight and great to have good news finally with the airport regional rail line, they have restored service now, the bad news the wilmington/newark regional rail line is not running because of signal problems. if you're in media, use the owe 1 or -- 101 or 102 trolleys. volume is not a problem. issues have to do with the events like the events on the parkway. they have the eastbound ramp blocked along the vine as well as rambles toward the schuylkill expressway and the spring garden and the parkway. they are closed because of the fest tifts and the preparation -- festivities and the preparation for them. parade east greenwood avenue and wycomb avenue.

>> developing now on "action news," hurricane arthur has come ashore.eloping now on "action howling winds and heavy rain has chased away vacationers from the north carolina coast. >> the jersey shore is feeling some of the effects of the storm, we're live in atlantic city, monitoring the conditions while accuweather tracks arthur's path. >> it's all systems go as the city celebrates the 4th of july celebration as we look down the benjamin franklin parkway where the wawa welcome america festivities will be underway very soon. >> reporter: david murphy has the forecast, and matt pellman is in for karen rogers.

>> reporter: as we look at satellite there's hurricane arthur off the coast of north carolina. we'll see some impact especially during the morning there's showers out to the west. you see those clusters of heavy showers and thunderstorms pushing into cape may county, that will be partly of the package down by the shore for the morning. there's a flood watch until noon today it's been dropped in the northern and western suburbs and philadelphia, but in jersey and delaware it's still up because of the last five six hours of rain you're about to get at the shore. it could be heavy at times. rip currents will be heavy all day into this evening. remember if you get caught in one, don't panic, swim parallel to the beach north or south and you will get out of trouble and make your way back to shore easily. 72 in wilmington, some areas seeing rain right now.

as we go through the day, 76 by 9:00. 777 by noon. most of the area will be drying out, but the shore will be the exception. this afternoon, lowering humidity high of 80. looks like a great day for afternoon barbecues and fireworks looks good, too, i'll have the rest of the weekend call coming up. looking up on the weather front and the traffic front. they have restored service to the wilmington/newark line as well. they are all running now, they are running on holiday schedules, that means a sunday schedule. looking up on the schuylkill expressway here in king of prussia, where we had a westbound accident approaching 202 and 422 that's completely gone. all labels open. go forth if you want to use the schuylkill expressway on this 4th of july. everything is nice and dry. egypt road at wedge wood way a crash.

curfew until later this morning. a full report is just a few minutes away. >> arthur is expected to pass the jersey shore, but well out to sea. holiday travelers will feel the effects of it, eva pilgrim is atlantic city where it is raining. >> reporter: the rain literally a second ago have picked up. the winds have picked up. if you look out toward the beach, the fog is lifted off the water. the water is rushing in. we got a few people despite the rain down by the beach getting into the water. while the jersey shore is not expecting the brunt of hurricane arthur, he will have an impact on holiday festivities. this is what it looked like yesterday, beautiful sunshine, but lots of wind. the wind churned up the water raising concerns about rip

currents which will be a concern throughout the weekend. in ocean city lifeguards kept swimmers close to the beach and no boogie boards were allowed. >> stay waist deep and don't go much further than that. have a parent around you. >> we pulled boards it's much safer not having the boards drifting from the crowds and what not. >> reporter: you can seem the ocean churning up as the rains and winds move into the area. the people seem to be putting their toes into the water this morning. and the rain is going to put a damper on some of the festivities that were supposed to be going on earlier today, but the water, because of how rough the water is, that will put a damper on the fireworks shows that were supposed to happen along shore communities. because the water is rough, even if it symptoms raining, the conditions will be too dangerous

to do fireworks, so many of the shore communities are postponing the fireworks show. in atlantic city they moved the fireworks to sunday night. we're live in atlantic city where it's raining eva pilgrim channel 6 "action news." matt. >> all right, eva, umbrellas come in handy, don't they. severe thunderstorms dealt a bunch across the delaware and lehigh valleys last night. in delaware a woman suffered minor injuries when a fallen limb slammed on to her car driving in mill creek. this is brand new video of arcing wires in the somerton section of philadelphia. peco is making repairs. >> the skies have cleared up in time for the culmination of the wawa welcome america festivities. the action cam is live at the main stage where the party is set for the parkway. thousands are expected to pack this space for the largest concert in america. crews put the finishing touches

creeping up into philadelphia this morning, the afternoon looks better. storm tracker 6 live double scan right now shows you two things, first of all we have that relatively speaking lighter shower activity to the northwest, but there's heavy rain bands coming in off the coast up through lewis, delaware, seaford and rehoboth beach getting this. and cape may picking up this, as well. not picking you mean lightening, i wouldn't be surprised to see lightning pop up, as well. that's a rain band from arthur. as we go out wider we have that cold front rain, kind of missing allentown, but reading getting that. the big issue is the band coming in from the south, because that's heavier rain. we as we look outside sky 6 while there are patches where the sky is looking bright, generally speaking a fair amount of clouds cover, things get

better this afternoon. 73 degrees right now, it's still rather mucky. the dewpoint has dropped off over the last couple of hours, but it's sticky out there. winds out of the north at 13, starting to pick up as the hurricane center gets closer to us. there's a chance of heavy showers and thunderstorms at times. some of this may reach into philadelphia and the northern and western suburbs will be hanging on to that stuff i showed you on radar. generally speaking as we get into lunchtime, it does look like the storm is pulling past us enough where a lot of rain is shifting away from philadelphia. we expect the storm to pull out of here and we should see improvement with the rain stopping and clouds break up and we wind up with sunshine and the humidity levels drop, so a lot of good stuff coming later today, once we get through the morning. 77 degrees by 8:00 a.m., 79 by

11. 2:00 p.m., 79 degrees, high of 80. 79 degrees by 5:00 p.m. i don't necessarily thing we'll get full sun, but it will be brighter and breezier, too. 77 degrees in allentown and mid 70s down the shore, too. a northerly breeze 20-mile an hour through the evening. 77 degrees by 7:00 p.m., 70 by 11:00 p.m. and some of the suburbs will hit 66 degrees. there's a chance of rip currents and high surf at the shore, i have a concern in the afternoon when the rain may die down some folks may want to go in. the ocean water temperature is in the mid 60s so it's not as

bbq fired up later this morning. lots of people heading out for the lots of festivities, not the least of which will be the party on the parkway. we have ramp closures, coming off the schuylkill expressway at spring garden, the eastbound ramp is blocked and eastbound to the vine shut down and the westbound to take you to the parkway. these will remain closed until the endful festivities and the cleanup. kelly drive closes at 10:00 a.m. for the independence day regatta. so many people are going to line the street to see matt and tam in just a few hours, chestnut is blocked at independence hall. we talk about parades because i want you to know where they are so you can go out and watch them, and where the streets are blocked. they won't necessarily happen depending on what the weather does. one in norristown starts at airy

and dekalb street. and jenkintown leadham street. south hampton ton one at second street and bustleton pike. middletown township bucks county starts at 9:00 a.m. it will close 413 near lincoln highway. morris town this has been cancelled, they called it because of the expected bad weather. >> hurricane arthur has knocked out power to thousands in north carolina, marci gonzalez has been there riding out the hurricane in nags head. alter art lashing the north carolina coastline making landfall as a category 2 with 100--mile-an-hour winds. >> when i got my kids in the

living room, i took them to the bathroom and we were heading to the, the ceiling was just -- to the, the ceiling was collapsing behind us. >> reporter: arthur moved up the coast taking aim on the outer banks. on hatteras island evacuations were mandatory. >> it's a bad situation there's nothing you can do. >> we're packing up to head to safer grounds and hope they call us back. >> reporter: no heading back just yet as arthur continues pummeling the shoreline. and now that we have daylight once the rain let's up a bit people will be able to to go out and assess the damage. one of the major concerns was coastal flooding with a possible storm surge up to 5 feet. abc news nags head, north
