go out and have a good time. he played an incredible game. >> he was the hero here. look at the saves, 16 in all yesterday. it's really just hard to imagine that the team could have made it this far without tim howard. he was the star up there. >> super hero. >> i loved it, good morning, america. >> and he started coughing. we cut out. >> we can't wait to get to tim. we have a lot of news to get to. right off the top, the hurricane watch for parts of the east coast this morning. tropical storm arthur gaining strength as we get on the air. ginger zee tracking it all. >> and looking more like a tropical storm. you can see the rotation paralleling the east coast of florida. still in the atlantic, strengthening overnight to 60 mile per hour winds, max sustained, and moving north. just grazing florida. but affecting mostly south carolina and north carolina. i think the outer banks get the first hurricane of our atlantic season. but i really wanted to focus on

the northeast. is it going to get us? rough surf into the weekend, but not a direct hit. this thing is moving. we're on hurricane watch right now as far as the outer banks goes. tropical storm watches, and even warnings out in the waters. especially for daytona beach today. that's where matt gutman is this morning. good morning. >> reporter: hey, ginger, good morning. just the past couple hours, really felt that wind and that surf pick up. it's up to about seven feet, and already over the past 24 hours, we have seen swimmers and paddle borders get into trouble, jammed up against the rocks because of the waves. and not just above the surface, but beneath it. rip currents a major concern. children and even adults getting swept far out to sea with these conditions. and with millions of people out on the beaches, that is the major concern here. now back to david and amy. >> yes. everyone, heed those warnings.

we want to talk about the world cup and that heartbreaking loss by team usa. the americans coming to close to pulling off a stunning comeback. we were all believing, but they fell short in extra time against belgium. bob woodruff is there this morning with the very latest. bob, good morning. >> reporter: well, good morning, amy. yeah, this is quite a game. i have to say this. the team just landed here in sao paulo just after midnight. even though they lost this game, they just never surrendered. from the very beginning, the americans were physical, pressuring the opposition, struggling to score. >> dempsey again. >> reporter: and while the belgians just kept firing, tim howard refused to let them in. saving one shot after another after another. 16 saves. the most saves by a goalkeeper at the world cup in the last 50 years. >> mr. invincible. >> reporter: with so many close calls but no score, the tension

was palpable. from the stadium in salvador to viewing parties all across the u.s. even the president getting in on the action. >> i believe that we can win! >> reporter: and with just minutes to go in regulation time, the u.s. nearly did win. jermaine jones heads it to a wide open chris wondolowski. >> wondolowski! >> reporter: but can't finish. >> score! >> in overtime, the belgians took the lead in the 92nd minute, a shot to the left. 12 minutes later. goal number two. >> bradley. >> reporter: but the americans would not give up. >> and look at this, it's julian green. >> reporter: with this dramatic goal by 18-year-old julian green in his world cup debut, keeping american hopes alive. a flurry of american chances, but with no more time, the comeback came to an end. >> i told them in the locker room, they should be proud, and take a lot of positive stuff

have you seen what is out there about you today? you are the new face of the quarter, you are mount rushmore, mount howard. and you have been promoted to secretary of defense overnight per wikipedia. did you see any of this? >> i -- i only just woke up, as you can tell. i've not seen any of that. but that's quite funny. >> well, and it's well-earned. you made 16 saves against belgium. and that is the best by a keeper in a world match since 1966 when they started keeping world records. you were awarded man of the match. how do you feel about your performance yesterday? >> well, i've said it all along, that's what i signed up to do. stick my face in front of balls and get in the way. that's my job. i was able to do a lot of that last night. for me, unfortunately it wasn't enough, we nearly did it. couldn't be prouder of the team. >> the entire country is proud

of the team. what is the mood in camp today? how are the guys feeling? the rest of the team feeling? >> i'm sure once everyone wakes up, we'll be probably disappointed still. but our heads are high, because we couldn't have given anymore. we played four phenomenal games. and, you know, last night everybody gave everything they had had. and sometimes you don't win. we're proud of ourselves. >> you won the hearts of americans for sure. it is just incredible. americans bought more tickets at the world cup than any other country except for the host country. it's remarkable, and you think about how soccer has been viewed by americans up until now. do you think that's changed after this world cup? >> it really says a lot about where soccer has come in our country. and it's exciting to see what the future holds. because this is still a very young and exciting team with a lot to offer. >> did you all feel the love coming from us to you watching? >> we were motivated by that. we were inspired. it gave us hope, a recognition

>> reporter: from food truck to fireball, this jaw-dropping surveillance video capturing the moment a propane tank on a mexican food truck exploded. it was during the dinner time rush. >> boom first, and then the fire just came out of nowhere. >> on my whole left side. >> reporter: at least 12 injured. >> she was in shock. it looked like she was dead. >> reporter: dropped inside the inferno, a mother and daughter who worked in the truck, rushed to the hospital in critical condition. >> i was walking, and it rocked me. >> reporter: as flames shot 200 feet in the air, two passing cars engulfed by flames. a utility pole on the other side of the street also catching fire. >> lunch truck has two similar propane tanks in the truck, one is still intact. >> the other ended up in a yard 150 feet away from the truck. >> it was like an earthquake.

>> the bomb squad and fire department are investigating if there was foul play. they want to make sure it's an accident. and now to breaking news this morning. sweeping new changes to keep us safe in the sky. the government proposing new rules to expand security screenings of passengers designed to prevent a terror attack. pierre thomas has the story. >> reporter: abc news has learned the department of homeland security has developed a series of urgent directives requiring other countries to expand screening before airliners can fly to the united states. increased random screenings, more intense scrutiny of electronics, and explosive detection screens, and adding to the list of clothing that may need to be removed. why the concern? radicals in war-torn syria are

trying to develop non-metallic explosives to be smuggled on to commercial planes. the fear is that some in syria are from al-qaeda's yemen branch, the innovative group responsible for the underwear bomb of christmas, 2009. many have arrived from europe and some from the u.s. radicals carrying passports from western countries, allowing easy access to the homeland. no final decision, but sources say homeland security is planning to move forward with some of these measures in the next two weeks. amy, david. >> important information as the summer travel season heats up. let's get the rest of the morning's stories from ryan. >> we begin with a fos-moving wildfire scorching california wine country. they have consumed more than 4 square miles of napa county. it's 30% contained and threatening hundreds of homes. fife structures damaged so far.

and a fed ex-plane landing in nashville after smoke in the cockpit. only the pilot and copilot were on board. they were not hurt. and new information about the government buses blocked from entering a processing center on tuesday by this group of angry protesters who say they were a safety threat. the buses turned back to san diego. but another bus is on the move carrying women and children from central america pouring across the border. this time, officers were seen blocking the entrance to the highway as the bus drove away. and a new record high on wall street this morning. flirting with 17,000. low interest rates forced investors to rely on talks. but one solemn headline, jaime diamond of jpmorgan chase has throat cancer. it's curable.

and accused of adding hundreds of millions of bogus charges to customer's bills, t-mobile. $9.99 a month for premium services like celebrity gossip. t-mobile calls the allegations unfounded. and former french president nicolas sarkozy arrested for corruption. accused of accepting campaign funds from moammar gadhafi in 2011. and your head in the cookie jar? in a scene straight out of winnie the pooh, this guy did just that, spotted crumbs, and then making matters worse, he climbed up a tree and couldn't get down. look at him. there he is. the experts were called in and the jar was safely removed from his head. six-month-old cub will be fine. he's a little bit embarrassed, but he get over it.

>> i hope he said it like that. i'm over it. >> i'm good. >> thanks, ryan. and now to the frightening moments at wimbledon. serena williams dizzy and disoriented in the middle of a match, shocking spectators. >> something is not right with serena. >> the drama unfolding for 17-time grand slam winner serena williams, playing a doubles match. she received medical attention courtside after a shaky warmup. once play got underway, williams still not her usual self. >> she can't even bounce the ball and catch it. i consider this dangerous. >> reporter: after losing the first three games, venus led her sister to her chair. >> he is not well, and i -- i can't imagine they're going to let this match continue. >> reporter: officials eventually calling the match, and williams walking off the court. appearing to be in tears. tournament officials saying the

cause of serena's behavior, a viral illness. and williams later releasing a statement through her publicist. i'm heartbroken i'm not able to continue in the tournament, i thought i could rally, i wanted to compete. but this bug just got the best of me. we are so hoping serena is feeling better and back at full strength to defend her title at the u.s. open in august. david. >> that was tough to watch. you are going to have much more in the next 24 hours. and an incredible story about the rescue on the highway. >> a driver pulled out of a burning car by a good samaritan who was at the right place at the right time. you won't believe how he managed to pull the driver to safety. the video is terrifying. a car burning on the side of a minnesota highway. now imagine actually being there. trapped in those flames. >> i knew i was in trouble. >> reporter: 51-year-old michael johannes was driving down the

road when his suv suddenly became engulfed. >> the power went out, the speedometer down to zero. >> reporter: and his doors locked. he was trapped. >> i decided to try to kick the passenger side out. >> reporter: but the window wouldn't break. the husband and father says he was preparing to die. >> i started thinking about my daughter, my wife. >> reporter: until a hero on the highway, 52-year-old bob renning, an air national guardsman, pulls over and sprints to help. what happened next is unbelievable. >> i didn't have anything to break the glass. i grabbed the top of the door frame and pulled until tglass broke. >> reporter: he went the piece of metal with his bare hands before pulling him to safety. we were there when the two men reunited. >> you came through here. i didn't do anything different than anyone else. >> reporter: but a different view --

as we look at the big picture speeds are down on the schuylkill, down to the single digits westbound from about approaching the boulevard to near gladwyne. traveling only about 9 miles an hour at times. don't forget in olde city the fifth street tunnel under the ben franklin bridge shut down for maintenance until 2 o'clock so you can't use that. we have this accident where a vehicle hit a pole still causing a problem on church road at willow grove avenue. when you have a downed pole you have to get crews to fix it. a little more difficult. west elm closed because of a water main break in norristown. stick to marshall street matt. >> thanks karen. now to that forecast. it's getting hot, it's getting hotter later today. here's meteorologist, david murphy. david. >> already feeling real humid on the terrace under the sun. heat advisory in effects as of noon today, it goes until 8 o'clock tonight and this is because the high temperatures are going to be in the 90's but the heat index will make it feel like it's over 100 in a lot of areas especially urban centers. already we're at 77 degrees in philadelphia and everybody pretty toasty across the

this horrific parasailing accident is speaking out. reunited with the people who save ed her life. what she's saying. and police trying solve the baffling murder mystery. a young mother killed out for a jog. it appeared to be a hit and run, but it was much worse. tough story to start with. >> reporter: wish i had more uplifting news. there is a task force to investigate this, the first homicide of the year in dalton township. lots of theories, but no leads, and what caused this wife and mother to be killed while out for a run. the death of 36-year-old rebecca bletch was thought or a hit and run, now a homicide. >> evidence pointed us in the other direction.

>> reporter: she was found sunday evening along this quiet country road, less than a pile from her michigan home. they found multiple shell casings near her body, and upon further investigation, a small bullet wound. the wife and mother had been shot in the head. >> no scenario can make sense, can bring any kind of understanding to what transpired. >> reporter: police say her last contact with a family member was around 5:00 p.m. a little over an hour later, the couple who discovered her body called 911. the physical therapist found along the same path she was regular lly jogged. >> the way she was dressed, she was getting some exercise. >> reporter: she was found with several valuables, making robbery an unlike limotive. her husband and 11-year-old daughter were out of town. her husband is not a suspect. he was too distraught to speak,

his uncle described her as a vibrant woman who's death is baffling and devastating. >> she pitched in, concerned about other folks. she was not just a person running down the road. she had a life. >> reporter: police are hopeful there are clues in the autopsy results. very little crime in this town. only three homicides in all of last year. this one mysterious. >> rattling the town. and dan abrams, this is a tough one. you heard the report, the husband not a suspect. begin with the people closersest to her? >> absolutely. first they think it's a hit and run, then she's shot. people they know the best. the husband was out of town with the daughter. doesn't necessarily mean he wasn't involved. look into him, exclude him as a possibility. then look to other people she

knew well. with a motive. the idea this is random, that someone is out jogs and gets shot and left with valuables is improbable to the authorities. it's not impossible, but it's inprobable. they will think that way. want to exclude those she knows best first. >> that's key, they found the valuables. the 5:00 p.m. phone call, going over the phone records? >> that's crucial. who were the last people she talked to? what was she texting about? who was she e-mailing? and back beyond just the most recent ones. was there any conflict? was there anyone there who would have had a motive to do this? how could this have happened? they wanted to piece together the story of her life now. the way to do that is by looking back at her computer records and, of course, her phone. >> dan, great to have you with us. and now to a texas cheerleader stirring up a

firestorm other her facebook photos that some may find disturbing. posing with the bodies of rare animals she's hunted in africa. sparking outrage, but she's speaking out in her defense. >> reporter: she's the texas teenager with a bow in her hair, and a bigger one in her hands. 19-year-old kendall jones, a cheerleader for texas tech, turning her facebook page into a tribute to her favorite activity, hunting. not just ducks and deer. a cheetah, a menagerie of endangered species he hunted in africa. it doesn't have animal rights activists picking up the pom-poms. they call her despicable, and the top-hated person. >> i'm kendall jones. >> reporter: when she was featured as a scholar of the

week on our dallas affiliate, she talked about her love of animals. >> do you have dogs? >> i have two. >> reporter: and firing back at her critics, pointing out the money she pace helps prevent poach. she writes, this is a conservation effort to ensure they never become extingt. >> in a modern day and age, killing an endangered species to save it, unacceptable. >> petition has more than 60,000 signatures. jones would not comment, but this may not be a bad thing. on a facebook page, she will be hosting her own reality show on the sportsman channel next year. the network, which airs hunting shows hosted eed by sarah pali others would not comment if she will be joining the cast.
