the officer approached him and he stabbed him and took off in his cruiser. he was found a short time later in a playground a short distance from where the vehicle was abandoned. he is an escapee from the bucks county prison. we are looking to see if he was a work escape prisoner or on if he escaped from the prison. we are waiting to hear the information, and from what i'm told he is about to take the podium. this is fred haren, the public safety director of bensalem. >> is there another nbc guy here? >> we are in good shape.

>> fred haren from bensalem police department, we got an email from buck county prison to look for an individual wlanted for escape. matthew miller out of ben salem, 23 years of able, he walked away from work release from the prison. he was spotted near route 13, and another officer went to make a pedestrian stop on the suspect, at the time, the individual seemed to be complying and the officer when to put handcuffs be the individual lunged up with a knife and stabbed the officer in his stomach, the bruntd of stab was taken to the vest. the subject then gave chase and ran from the officer and jumped

into his police car and took off. the car was located from the philadelphia police department and bensalem officers and pennsylvania state police on fair hill road in philadelphia. then the police saw the individual running through rush elementary school in philadelphia and he was apprehended by philadelphia pd, and the suspect has been retaken into custody and will be arraigned this evening on a various amount of charges that i don't have at this time. the officer is okay. a 6-year veteran of the philadelphia police department. this is another great story where the bulletproof vest, not from a bullet but a knife this time, saved his life. the officer was on the roadway faced with a serious criminal wanted for escape.

one student is dead after a shooting at a high school. police just gave us an update. alicia vitarelli is live in the satellite center with the very latest. >> a very tragedy day in troutdale, oregon, panic and fear across the school, one student as you mentioned is dead, police are updating us on the situation and telling us that the gunman is dead as well. >> i was really scared, like this is happening, this is real. jada is a sophomore and walked in as the gunman fired. >> heard gunshots and someone finally let me in and i am going get down on the ground, the suspected shooter entered the school at 8:00 a.m. while the school was in session, one student is dead and so is the lone gunman, they are still in

and a half inches of rain, about 40 lightning strikes in the last 15 minutes, near barnes bro and an inclusiver near swededboro near the turnpike. they are releasing a lot amount of water in a short amount of time. flash flood warnings are issued in newark up to 2.5 inches of rain have fall and and anywhere from salem to woods town to mullica hill and gloucester county all within the flash flood warning as the area roadways take on the excess water that can't drain down the drains because it is coming down so quickly. what to expect this evening, scattered downpours around the region are slow moving, 1 toe 2 inches of rain per hour with these particular downpours, they are causing localized flooding. we'll see if they move at all to

the remaineder of the week, with the dark clouds it's releasing downpours and a few thunderstorms especially in interior southern new jersey in gloucester county, we had this cluster releasing one to two inches of rain per hour. we are pushing into the atlanticic county and 53 lightning strikes with this particular storm, and why is this one particular area? we are throwing on extreme lines on double scan live, this is surface winds, they come in out of the northeast here, and it comes out of the east-northeast here. from the easterly direction, all the winds are converging from southern new jersey than bumps the air at the surface and lift its to the atmosphere and we have the cluster of storms in southern new jersey now and that is the main focusing mechanism

and putting southeastern pennsylvania on the back burner so to speak here this evening. flash flood warnings there is a vast amount of them from wilmington to baird and newark from mullica hill and franklin, up to 2.5 inches of rain, with these storms near wilmington as it passes to the east, can you expect that amount of rain near glassboro as these storms slowly drift to the east. if you head to the phillies game it's warm and cloudy and the thunderstorm threat, but again wtd streamlines converging south and east of the philadelphia, most of the game should be dry with temperatures by the ninth inning down to 75 degrees, 77 in wilmington and cooler there, and muggy because of the rain, dry in dover, and dry in reading with the temperature coming in at 80, early showers through chester and burlington county and we caught a break and they are popping east of the

a lot of work to be done and this bridge will be closed all summer and perhaps even longer. >> the expertise and the equipment and material to get this bridge reopen said on their way to delaware right now. >> the southbound lanes could be open by labor day with northbound opening a month later. the plan is to build entirely new foundations for the four tilting towers, it will replace existing steel pilings now bent. the new reinforced foundations. temporary support towers. to get traffic on the bridge as quickly as possible. >> if that fails it's on to plan b. >> we'll have to completely tear down this section of the bridge and build a new section. if that is the case, we'll be looking at later this year or

"action news" delaware valley's leading news program. with jaime apody, meteorologist, cecily tynan and rick williams, and monica malpass.eteorologist, a drug investigation is underway at a west philadelphia elementary school. narcoticsing detectives combed the school today after a student brought a substance into class that might be heroin. the big story is the drug scare at a philadelphia elementary school after a third grader brought in several packets of a white powdery substance. it happened here in philadelphia and there is a large police presence for several hours. sara bloomquist is live outside of the school with more details.
