>> cbs broadcast center in philadelphia. this is cbs-3 "eyewitness news". and we've got our eye on the storm this morning generally quiet right now as we take live look at storm scan3, we did get some light snow this morning, in some areas. just a tease of what's to come. major nor'easter is on the way that could dump inches of snow on the philadelphia area, and even more in parts of new jersey. hi, good morning everyone, glad you're with us, monday, january 26. i'm ukee washington. >> i'm erica von tiehl. as you might imagine schools already are closed for today or plan to send the student home early because of the snow. philadelphia public and archdioces schools are closing at noon today. in case your student goes there, might need to pick them up early. full list of the bottom of your screen, cbsphilly.com. now we do have team of reporters for you all across the field katie fehlinger carol ericson weaver jessica here keeping our eye on the roads, people everywhere watching us. >> we do. let's tart this thing offer katie. good morning. >> good morning, nor'easter has yet to form, but the combination of it, are certainly out there. and this is going to be a whallop by the time it actually develops, into the monster that we expect it to develop into. now, let's start things off just by taking/to the to the live neighborhood network couple of camera shots kutztown area middle school fresh powder on the soccer fields palmyra cove nature park gently at this point real low clouds over the center city skyline. in the distance see the skyscrapers, can't at this point, down at the area shore

points, it is just quiet and dry actually at this point in rehoboth. do you have some stronger surf, the choppy waves beginning to move in here. winds in a second. but as we go back out to storm scan, there are places where you're finding little bit after lull. now one zoom out shows that you there is more moisture on tap here. specially through central pennsylvania, and then down into virginia and portions every maryland, see the heavier rain, rain, still warm enough for it down that way as well as the snow starting to pack up. so that's going to help this storm, you know, gather it moisture energize, means we'll have much more to deal with even as early as we hit the noon hour, things will start to begin to deteriorate here with winter weather advisories hot pink indicating winter storm warnings, philadelphia included there blizzards warnings at noon for ocean monmouth county. your current win speeds are out of the northeast we'll keep the win pick one time. how much are we talking? well, this is general look at the impact, the brunt of the storm tonight, into early tomorrow morning but will all be tapering through the day. we will be dealing with six to 12 inches, in philadelphia, higher through east central new jersey, gusty winds that will potentially create white out conditions, poor visibility, at or under a quarter after mile. and snow covered roads to definitely slow you down. so, you know we'll say it again. if you can manage to do it, it is a good idea to just stay home, once this really starts to pick up. but, so far it, hasn't been as bad. for more information on how

things are looking on the roads right now we want to send things out to meteorologist carol erickson, actually we send things to ever jessica, how are the roads looking? >> i can tell you actually not doing too bad. just at clock 03, doesn't have ton of volume to speak of. knock steady falling at the current team. you can see right on route one past ridge, everything still moving along great. north or southbound, over on the ben franklin bridge, same story, all lanes open. you can see visibility, seems to be doing okay, and since all lanes are open headed westbound into the city no problems there no problems heading into new jersey as well. there are a few accident though, because even though there is not steady snowfall everywhere, there are some slippery spots. out in conshohocken, on easel many at fayette accident pushed over to the right hands shoulder towamenson, sumneytown pike, near towamenson avenue, another crash there. now, problems for the philadelphia international airport, of course. we do have some delays and concellations do you want to check with your airline to see if you're affected by. that will speed restrictions as well due to reported icing conditions on 495 southbound, right around 95. drop the speeds down to 45 miles per hour. but, mass transit is a perfect, perfect way to go today. everything is running on time so far with no delays for patco, new jersey transit and dart. ukee back over to you. >> thank you. off initials south jersey say they are ready for the storm but they're not seeing any snow as of yet. >> our eye on the storm coverage continues right now with cleve bryan in pennsauken, last time we checked with you not much happening. now seeing i think couple of

flakes there, good morning. >> good morning, yes, the snow start today come down much more steadily before just kind of swirling around very sporadic quite a bit more than the last half hour, so matter of fact right along the sidewalk here, just the first combination of some accumulation slightly slick but as i rub my foot across the concrete little while ago still had great traction, this is the merger between 38 and 70 headed into philadelphia. so it has been good commute so far for those headed into the city. we do know that a lot of work has been done, in preparation to make sure that the roadways are in the best possible conditions. crews, from the state level, the county level out all day sunday and overnight looking the treatment stays for the much bigger system coming our way. many longer we can hole off on the moisture, better off the roads will be for the next rounds. reporting live in pennsauken cleve bryan. >> thank you clever. time to check the roads on the other side of the delaware river. >> "eyewitness news" reporter jan carabeo joins us now in warminster, bucks county, january, good morning. >> roads are wet, could be some slick spots this morning and doing just fine. coming to you live from county line road york road here in warminster bucks county. you can see the traffic moving through this intersection, pretty smoothly this morning. that intersection watts actually covered with snow when we first arrived but so many salt trucks have moved through this area.

(record scratch) you say stand n' stuff tortillas old el paso says... start somewhere fresh >> we have our eye on the storm this morning some light snow fell overnight. and that slowing down things just little bit this morning. however, the heaviest part of the storm not hitting us until later tonight. we'll get an updated forecast of katie coming up in just a minute. don't forget to keep an eye at the bottom of the screen for today's school closings and early dismissals, a loft children affected today. >> well, blizzard warning is in effect this morning for 250-mile stretch of the northeast, that includes north jersey, new york, and boston. millions of people are in the path of this storm. forecasters predict the nor'easter could dump up to 2 feet of snow for some. many people spent the weekend understandably stocking up. new york city mayor bill de blasio, says that the storm could be among the biggest the city has ever seen. >> so, my message to all new yorkers is prepare for something worse than we have seen before, prepare to be safe. >> now, with all of the snow and the wind and in the forecast there is storm is expected to paralyze travel

despite efforts to pre-treat roads and also get the plows ready, more than 3,000 flights have already been canceled, across the country and many more could follow when the heavy snow arrives they've been saying all morning flying out today tomorrow, want to call your carrier just to make sure your flight is still a go. right now 7:13, want to check in with katie and get the latest on the storm. >> true, you know, it is sort of still in clipper mode out there right now. we say clipper all we're talking about is one of the quick little systems originates in canada, sipping across the usa typically come through with light ac laying cents of snow and then you wipe your hands clean of them and done. this is much different story because, there is few factors that come into play here, here's the clipper itself, beginning to gather some moisture, there is an atmospheric roadblock, you can see some of the clouds far off to the northeast our storm from the weekends, still messing with us, inadvertently because setting up traffic jam of the rest of the atmosphere, so this storm will get stuck gather some warm energy, you can see more snow falling right now through wisconsin that will dive in. join up with this, help this storm to energize itself and become a monster nor'easter. so by later on today headed into tonight especially, you start to see thump snow, strong gusty winds could lead out to white oust conditions. it is still warm enough through southern delaware even south most new jersey cape may county, that you are even finding some light rain showers, winter alerts, posted up and down the new england coastline, we've got winter weather advisories as you head further inland, but generally philly, southern new jersey,

certainly the lehigh valley and west -- northwestern portions of the garden state included in the winter storm warn, and then blizzard warnings that start in ocean go to up monmouth, right up the coastline as we expect to see some really strong winds kicking in in that zone. what is a blizzard? it is a specific definition. it is defined as a large amount of snow or blowing snow, with winds that are either sustained at 35 miles per hour, or frequent gusts that continue to exceed that future winds gust, sustained winds ten 15, out to say 25, further inland, but as we look ahead to this evening see how things are starting to pick up here 40, 45 miles per hour gusts, the model pegging, at the shore line here. it is pretty gusty as well inland but it will be as strong regardless, light fluffy snow, that can accumulate quickly for one thing, but could also blow and drift and really reduce your visibility. so that said, i have a feeling we'll have a lot of school closing tomorrow. through tomorrow night, it is still quite breezy but the storm will be pulling away thankfully meantime you have high tide psych they will will come in, so coastal flood warnings take effect, at 11:00 and they'll be including the entire new jersey and delaware shore lines here for tidal flooding. not the thing you think about when talking about nor'easter and snowfall totals. but regardless, here is our updated and exclusive eyewitness weather snowfall map. six to 12 easily we're going to flirt with 12 inches here in philadelphia, further

inland go, four to 8 inches, still significant but that's your lightest total of snow. and then east-central new jersey burlington, ocean portions of western monmouth then into mercer counties, you could even lower bucks, could pick up up to a foot and a half worth of snow. now, if you go close enough to the shore line, ocean monmouth county that's where could you even have 2 feet by the time this is all said and done. so we are sedgley dodging the worse hard to believe but the brunt of this storm as we saw from mayor de blasio up in new york definitely going up to the big apple. snow timing, through midday today, light snow. you may have some lulls in the action, but will be there. heavy snow, and wind, the strongest of it, coming through tonight and early tomorrow morning. but i do think that the evening rush will be impacted, that's when you start to really see these conditions begin to dramatically deteriorate, so, you know, this morning's drive isn't ideal either. but it is the bert of the two typical rush hours. by tomorrow, still snowing still windy but gradually tapering, and then by later tomorrow night thankfully done with the storm. but boy are we going to have clean to up do on wednesday. basically the one and only guaranteed sunny day of the forecast. but it will be a messy day and then by thursday night maybe more snow. >> more. >> i'm thinking two 4 inches, the general expectation right now for that event. but, we saw this one change too. >> let's get it out the way. >> hey, young lady, good morning. >> now actually not doing too bad. there is snow falling some places but nothing real that i bad. little bit of slippery spots

we go outside, show you what we're talking becomes first out on the schuylkill expressway, where roadways seem to be generally dry. not whole lot of volume really, in either direction see just little shiny this is the schuylkill right around 202, headlights are headed eastbound, into the city. no problems there westbound lanes you can see little brake lights starting to happen there. but everything still moving along just fine. now, over on the ben franklin bridge, you can see tiny bit of reduced visibility here, headed on into the city all lanes open, westbound reports of the burlington bristol bridge scheduled for opening in the next 15 minute or so, expect residual delays around the area accident germantown, over to the shoulder currently some delays and concellations of the philadelphia international airport so you definitely want to check with our lines to see if you are affected by that. great alternate so far for the morning, as the patco speed line, new jersey transit and dart and everything joining on time with no reported delays, ukee, back over to you. >> jess, thank you. between today and tomorrow, as you know we're in for big snowstorm. >> tough couple every days for penndot. joined on the phone by penndot charlie metzger to talk more about the work they've already done, heard such great things from the crews on the road, charlie, roads really are ready. good morning. >> morning, how are you? >> doing well. so what exactly has penndot done up until this point to make sure that the roads are clear for all of the folks going on them today? >> we started yesterday where we had our salt brine operation in full swing. we had 393 trucks in, and that was during the overnight hours. we were brining during yesterday.

we were getting our trucks loaded up with salt, getting our plows on getting them ready to hit the roadways as soon as the snow started to fall. >> explain to everyone the brining process, what's it do, why put it down before all of the activity happens? >> solar salt, and water and we are able to apply it through spray bars off our trucks first level of salt our first layer of defense that prevent snow and ice from bonding to the roadways. >> we want to give all of these trucks room. you don't want to be too close to them when driving behind them? >> you want to stay at least six car lent behind the snow plow. because you'll have salt coming offer the back of the truck, and never try to pass the snow plow. because the blade can be wider than the truck. and you might not be able to see it. so the safest place for you to be is behind the plow by six car lengths. >> we appreciate what you and all of your colleagues do for us around the region, thank you so much, my friends. >> thank you. >> faulty theater to blame for carbon monoxide scare in the northeast that left family of five hospitalized. so the general expectation gusty wind will below and drift the snow tonight evening drive will start to deteriorate big time. poor visibility, snow covered roads, travel will be a mess, through the day tomorrow, it is all beginning to dramatically diminish, but not really completely out of the woods until about late day tomorrow at the earliest, jess. >> thanks, katie yes currently seeing some slight snowflakes here on the vine street expressway, every once in a while on the camera see couple flow nation around 24th street. right now looks like it is just doing okay, though. headed westbound toward the schuylkill expressway, toward 95, still moving along just fine though, so far and out in new jersey, starting to see a lot of volume here in the northbound lanes roadways look particularly dry though, headed northbound toward the bridges, 295 looking okay speaking of 295 an accident on 295 northbound right before road 70 pushed over into the right hand lane. ukee, back to you. >> thanks so much. let's check on the roads now in south jersey where the snow is starting to fall. we saw last time we checked in our eye on snow coverage with cleve bryan in pennsauken, cleve? >> good morning, ukee, we are getting baby flakes right now. little tiny ones, that pelt you in the face, but they're starting to accumulate, just little bit on the sidewalks here. you see dusting, but over on the roadways, which have been treated, it looks a lot better. it is clear here, at route 38 and 70 headed into philadelphia so far. it's been very good morning commute. just slight slickness to the road, but really overall in very good condition. we know a lot of hard work put

in here, over the weekends, it is still really looks initially like it was just going to be simple little clipper system that would zip through, dump light snow and be done with it, but atmospheric roadblocks being set up. more energy, and moisture, that this is going to garner with time. and that does mean that we'll start to see things really deteriorate over time too. you can see the steadier, rain and snow, now picking up through delaware, so, you know sends us pictures, let us know what you're seeing, hashtag cbs-3 snow. would love to see it. going through the day we start to see the whole area gotten develop opened once again with more snow, although few little lulls along the way. once it starts, the storm needs to time before it will be over. it is really until tomorrow, afternoon, early evening, at the earliest, that we start to see things really completely depart. now, winter storm warnings, take effect at noon, as do winter weather advisories shade the until the purple. also have blizzard warnings. yep. for the eastern most edge of our viewing area, so, up toward new york sit. the big apple long island, boston, that's where the main brunt of this storm will be confined, but it does include part of our area, too. and you will be dealing with gusts in some of the counties, as high as tropical storm force or greater. and that will easily lead to blizzard conditions where you have got the blowing and the drifting snow. now, timing it out when you're trying to travel in there is the morning drive, as we've been hearing from the field crews hasn't been horrible. it is not perfect, but it is not as bad as it will be, folks. because as we go through the day, it is only going to get progressively worse and worse

with snow and the wind, picking up. >> so start to see the visibility, get reduced start to see that potential for white oust conditions tonight. in the meantime high tide cycle, led to coastal flood warnings, out toward all of the area shore points, and we have a nor'easter on our hands, folks not there yet. but will take shape with time. for heavy snow, gust that is could exceed 40 miles per hour not just at the shore but certainly inland, too and visibilities will be reduced. so hazardous travel is a un statement by the time we hit the brown the. -- brunt of the storm tonight into early tomorrow morning. but, again as i mentioned it, hasn't been ideal out there on the roads so far this morning. for more on it we want to send things out to meteorologist carol erickson, live for us in the mobile weather lab hi, carol. >> well, katie, you know, we've been driving around a lot. and we just stopped in haverford, and got out and very icy on the shoulders of these roads. parking lots, the same deal. unless somebody's been out you can't see it, it is this black ice out there this morning, because we've got temperature of 28 degrees right now, in the mobile weather lab on areas that have not seen the brine or the salt, you're finding that very slick coating of ice. we're on the blue route right now going southbound, ridley township headed to the 95 area, 295, there you may be finding few snow flurries, south enough in jersey finding the rain showers. >> give you an eye ad of the change over that you'll be experiencing through the southeastern counties. in new jersey.

between now and 10:00 the rain that's that has started some spots, should be turning over to some steady showers between say 10:00 and 8:00. the area warm enough for that to be happening. but it doesn't stay that way. as this low pressure system, nor'easter really starts cranking up tonight it starts to pull down colder thayer changes everything over to snow. that general time line is between eight p.m. and midnight. visibilities, of course, in the dark would be reduced anyway. expect to find with the blowing and drifting snow that we will be finding through our new jersey counties and pennsylvania, as well, that you're going to be finding a situation that will be very difficult to navigate. so we're back out here live, we're headed onto 95 at this point, and at this point traffic is moving along just fine. but dow want to caution you that if for any reason you had to get out be really careful on the sides. the brine is pretty much in the running lanes. it doesn't go that far off into the shoulder of the road. and it is a whole different story, the second you get off onto anything that hasn't been treated with the precipitation like it is the moisture that just is hanging in the air and any that far moisture that's fallen or just hanging around, is ready to freeze on any surface that will take it, and that will be a lot of these areas. so we'll continue to follow this for you as we travel on 95 to 295. jess? >> thank you carol. great to see some first-hand accounts, as well, especially because we can see that the roads are doing much better than we previously thought. we know it will get little worse later on, this afternoon, but right now everything is doing just okay.

but, out on 422 you can see some snow covered roadways, shoulders right here, definitely very wet, you can see, a lot of slow going in the eastbound lanes around trooper road, and headed eastbound toward the king of prussia area see most of the delay and back up. over on the ben franklin bridge reduced visibility here just all lanes open, though, so that's good thing. no problems headed into new jersey and some slow going heading into the city westbound, and currently speaking of bridges in the middle of a burlington bristol bridge opening. and the tac-pal will be opening scheduled to be open about 8:15. so take the set is he ross bridge to get on bust those for now. 422 oaks into 202 eastbound really heavy trip there about 15 minutes for. that will 95 woodhaven road into the vine street expressway pretty slow, about 26 minutes, and currently no problems on the pa turnpike eastbound from vale forge into bensalem that will take you 24 minute. currently mass transit perfect alternate, all running on time with no delays, patco speed line, new jersey transit and dart all running just fine. we do have delays and concellations at the philadelphia international airport. so just check with your airlines to see if your @ expected by those delays, ukee back to you. >> jess, thank so much. as you might imagine salt trucks busy all over the area specially in the northwest suburbs trying to keep up with mother nature. >> driving to work you want to be careful. eye on the storm coverage continues right now with jan carabeo out in warminster bucks county to track all morning long for us. hey, jan? >> reporter: erika ukee, good morning. snow's not falling any more right now, that's the good news, because the roads have cleared up quite a bit since we first arrived at our live

so far it has been a very safe and fairly dry commute, here headed into philadelphia, and pennsauken reporting live cleve bryan cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> cleve, thank you both. >> just wait. >> ya, ya. indeed. >> things will change. >> traffic and weather together and weather watchers, here's kate. >> i exactly right. you know what? we are going to start to see things just conditions start to not only deteriorate with time here, but really just become at one point i would say impassable in some spots because really start to see the snow kick in as time goes on. our eyewitness weather watcher network in full force this morning, many of you sending in temperatures that are below freezing so, atmosphere absolutely ripe for snow. we start you up here in coopers berg pa 22 degrees, with just clouds. >> i says large snowfall, waiting for the larger snowfall, it is on it way given it time. great picture of fresh snow, 1 inch so far. and that is going to add up over time. we take you little further off to the south here, we go in to 26 degrees sent in from phil chaplain he's if philadelphia modest northeasterly breeze for now but that is set to change as well overcast, no snow just yet where he is, just a little trace in terms of how much he's fawn on the gown. one of the gold star weather watchers, tim mitchell, send us report every single morning, tuckerton he's got 31 degrees and clouds, and's he is also got bit more after breeze out there more of, you know northeasterly breeze anywhere from 15 to 20 miles per hour and just few flurries at this hour anyway, where tim is located. dow want to take you out to

storm scan. got to talk about what's going on with the storm. and there is just basically several factors that are going to turn this storm into the monster we expect. this huge nor'easter. so you can already see some of the heavier moisture, starting to build in across virginia, maryland, all moving in, our way and you can actually see too see the heaviest bands of some snow and some rain coming in to kent and sussex county too. so all eventually going to roll our way with time, and the whole delaware valley will gotten compass dollars by the moisturement on ton of it all see the leftovers clouds, doesn't look like much. that's what's left of our past weekend storm. it is setting up its own little roadblock. doesn't want to go anywhere. and as a result, the whole atmosphere is getting into a traffic jam. now, there is additional energy that's going to sort of ride the rim of our trough join up with the clipper already here, and that's how the storm's going to essentially get more energy, and turn itself into this huge storm system. so winter storm advisories across the map here. you have got blizzard warnings in all of the red shaded counties notice, it is essentially here for down east main down into our area, ocean monmouth counties. winter storm warnings in the hot pink, and winter weather advisories as you head further inland. so how much are we really talking here? well, this is our exclusive eyewitness weather snowfall map. we are specking in philadelphia a general six to 12-inch swat. and that goes up to the poconos, down to the shore. now, just through east and central portions of new jersey, a really good shot to see a foot plus, up to foot and a half worth of snowfall, and then the bull's eye goes

to eastern ocean and monmouth counties then up into the big apple new york sit that's where we could even see the city get shutdown. that's how bad the worm somebody l we'll right on edge of the real brunt of this storm. but the brunt for us, coming tonight, i would say as early as typical evening rush, we really see conditions go downhill. it is with us all night. starting to taper through the day tomorrow. and then, another chance for snow. if you can believe it by thursday night. we'll keep on top that far too. jess over to you. >> yes, we will. thank you, katie. good morning everybody outside start things off on 95 where fortunately so far we don't really have much to speak of weather wise really, in any of the cameras not a lot of snow falling anywhere. every once in a while see little trickle after snowflake, you can see the roadways little shy. there is some snow but nothing currently falling right around 95 at girard. but the typical morning volume here headed southbound toward the center city area, over in new jersey, starting to see some delays here, on the 42 freeway, headed northbound, into 295 possibly to philadelphia and the surround area bridges, everything moving along just fine, though, over in the southbound lanes. and speaking of bridges the burlington bristol bridge currently open, tac-pal bridge opening at approximately 8:00 czars so plan your trip accordingly for, that take the betsy ross bridge, to get on by for the time being. otherwise, out in new jersey on 295 northbound, right before the entrance at route 70 there, there is an accident pushed over into the shoulder, and a lot of the majors starting to slow up, 422 very snowy out around on 422, as well. from observation into 202 eastbound little heavily about

15 minutes little slow on the schuylkill, currently no problems out on the pa turnpike if you're headed eastbound. erika, back over to you. >> all right thank you jessica. we want to check in on the roads right now in the suburbs, jill melwert from kyw1060 out in mobile three. >> last time he was having weber appetizers, small portions streaming live, driving pictures from wayne delaware county. how is it looking jim? >> 252, just about to turn onto lancaster avenue here, in paoli. and really you can see the roads are just wet at this point. you can see maybe a coating here on the sidewalks where it hasn't been shoveled. really not slowing you down too much. light snow falling here. the thing that you might run into is your washer fluid testifily going to need that today with the salt sprague up off the road. temperatures are in the mid 20's, roads are wet you might see refreezing, but really as i drive around, here, it is mostly just wet roads couple of turn lanes maybe on and off-ramps aren't use that much. might have bit of coating as you get further off 422 for example, westbound from king of prussia, you see little bit more snow. maybe an inch, up to 2 inches, out toward limerick. but as the morning rolls on, things clearing up pretty nice out on the roads so far at least. >> now, jim, you mention the refreezing that possibly will be happening. did you finds any slick spots? have you slid at all while on the roads? >> not from refreezing. there are couple of turn lanes maybe that might be snow covered. you know, just the little coating where they either didn't treat but really few and far between for the most
