(record scratch) you say stand n' stuff tortillas old el paso says... start somewhere fresh >> ♪ >> from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia, this is cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> we're in the midst of a a bitter blast of cold air and if you're forced to head outside tonight you got to bundle up. we're bracing for temperatures in the single digits and wind chills even colder than that. good evening, i'm chris may. >> i'm jessica dean. there are some school closures and delays for tomorrow morning and you can see them scrolling at the bottom of your screen. >> we've got team three coverage of this dangerous cold tonight. our natasha brown is out in the elements. she's got a look at how people are coping but we'll begin in the weather center. meteorologist kate bilo is standing by now. kate. >> thank you chris. i hate to make natasha waitly she looks so cold. temperatures have dropped and are steadily dropping through the overnight hours. tomorrow morning will be the coldest yet. but actually the worst of the wind chill will be during the overnight hours. so, if you can bundle up, put a few extra blankets on the bed, crank the heat as much as you can and stay warm tonight things will gradually get better through the end of the week. storm scan3 shows the snow squalls we had earlier today have fizzled. we're not going to see more of that. maybe a stray flurry here or there but the bigger story is the cold. wind chill alerts in effect across the northern plains

the midwest and the eastern seaboard. we are under a wind chill advisory here in the philadelphia area. you can see the whole region shaded in that lighter blue, that cold looking blue. wind chills will range from five below down the shore to 20 below or colder overnight through the pocono region. that's where the coldest air will be. we're sitting at zero. it is zero in mount pocono at the moment, 15 in philadelphia, 9 degrees in allentown and 18 in wildwood. even colder as you head off to the north and west where we're subzero in minneapolis des moines and chicago. buffalo is at 2 degrees at the moment but the winds are still strong. current winds out of the north and west and these are sustained. these are not gusts. winds sustained at about 20 miles per hour at the airport, 20's miles per hour in wilmington. gusts 30 miles per hour through the next several hours and that's why we're experiencing the worst of the wind chills tonight into early tomorrow morning. the worst of it minus 15 to minus 20 in the poconos. mine news five in the city and slightly sub steer along the shore points and down into the southern delaware. coming up with the seven day i'll let you know if this has a chance of ending any time soon. jessica. >> stay on top of the winter weather by downloading the cbsphilly weather app. you'll get the latest forecasts. you can download it for free on google play and itunes. conditions very tough out there tonight. being outside for even just a few minutes is a challenge. our natasha brown continues our bitter blast coverage and she's live at the blue cross river rink where natasha some people chose to be outside tonight. >> reporter: yeah, you know, we have been from philly to

skate regular having a good time they're bundled up and doctors remind you to stay bundled up, limit your exposure to this weather in order to prevent frost bite. we're live at penn's landing tonight t-natasha brown "eyewitness news" on the cw philly natasha thank you very much. dangerous bitter cold has code purple locations opened across delaware tonight. this is milford delaware. code purple sites in all three of the state's counties are typically in houses or places of worship and community centers. that he provide warm short term housing and also hot meals for the homeless. code purple is similar to code blue in much of the rest of the area. well, the dangerous cold is as tough on pets as it is people. animal advocates encourage you to bring those pets inside in the winter. a new city of philadelphia ordinance can have owners fined up to $500 if their pets are outside during weather that is 20 degrees or cooler. act philly handles the complaints and as of earlier this day, they have made 16 site visits. the coldest weather does come tomorrow morning so be sure to wake up with "eyewitness news." we're starting at 4:30 on our sister station cbs3. >> a manhunt is under way in france for the three gunmen responsible for a terror attack that killed 12 people. police have converged on a town east of paris looking for the suspects. 34 year old sayyad and his 32 year old brother sharif and an 18-year-old. they opened fire at a newspaper in paris that parodied mohammed. they execute add french police officer before fleeing in a car. one person described the

"eyewitness news" reporter todd quinones is in bridgeton cumberland county with more. >> no peace, no justice no peace. >> reporter: enduring sub freezing temperatures demonstrators marched through the streets of bridgeton wednesday night angry over the death of 36 year old jeremy reed. he was shot to death by two bridgeton police officers following a traffic stop december 30th. >> just killed that dude. >> reporter: his wife was among the crowd who gathered at the scene of the shooting on south and henry streets. >> i want justice for my husband. so, i will walk with y'all. i'm going to talk with y'all i'm going to ride with y'all because my husband would want me to. >> reporter: the cumberland county prosecutor's office so far has released few details

butter authorities allege that a handgun was revealed and later recovered at the scene. officers braheem days and roger worley both shot reed. it's not clear what led up to the traffic stop but protesters question if the shooting was justified. >> what he want a special prosecutor because history has told us that the relationship that the prosecutors have with the police, it doesn't bring about a fair -- a fair showing to have them prosecute a case. >> reporter: court records indicate reed had a prior criminal record. in 1994 he was sentenced to 15 years in prison for reportedly shooting at three new jersey state troopers. but supporters say the father of a three month old boy was not a violent man. the two bridgeton police officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation which is standard procedure any time a police officer is involved in a shooting. in bridgeton cumberland county, new jersey, todd quinones for "eyewitness news" at 10:00 on the cw philly. >> well, tonight we know the army veteran who shot and killed a psychologist at the it pass so va medical clinic yesterday before killing himself was a former clerk at that clinic. today the fbi identified the shooter as jerry sarato and the psychologist as dr. timothy jorbach. investigators say sore ran no, sir threatened the psychologist last year. the fbi has not provided a full motive for the shooting. tonight police are increasing patrols in a bucks county neighborhood after several homes were burglarized on new year's eve. the search is on for the bandits of the pricey items they stole in lower makefield township. "eyewitness news" reporter

diana rocco tells us police and residents are on alert. >> reporter: on new year's eve a rash of burglaries in upper makefield township. police say five homes were all hit by the same crooks. >> burglar or burglars get in there and they look for jewelry. they bypass electronics bypass other items and go right for the jewelry. >> reporter: three homes in the meadowbrook development and about a quarter mile away two more homes were hit in the woodlands development. detectives responding to one were alerted by a neighbor that the people next door were away. it turns out their house was hit, also. police say it all happened after 9:00 p.m. while homeowners were out. in each case the entry was forced through a back door and the thieves got away with more than $100,000 in jewels. >> very unique pieces of jewelry, very expensive. we're asking that if someone tries to sell it or sees it, you know, to please give us a call right away. >> reporter: two of the items are heart shaped philly pendants with diamonds inside and a woman's name engraved on the back a communion bracelet with brazilian gold coins and a pearl cross necklace were also taken. police were able to recover evidence from each of the houses and neighbors we talked to say they are now keeping a close eye on each other's homes. police will be increasing their patrols to the affected neighborhoods. they are asking anyone who sees anything suspicious to give them a call. in lower make if he would township i'm diana rocco for "eyewitness news" on the cw philly. >> new tonight some folks in south jersey are getting gas at a price they have not seen in quite some time. the "eyewitness news" in deptford at a gulf station on delsea drive.

for meteorologist kate bilo tracking this frigid forecast. >> highjacked just like finney the anything my heels trying to walk in the parking lot earlier today. it was a sad sight. if you didn't shovel your driveway from yesterday, if you didn't clear off the walkway things are going to be iced over. please be safe and definitely remember to bundle up. our temperatures are plummeting already. 10 degrees, this is from lou in norristown, 10 degrees with a clear sky and a gusty breeze. as we head up to the north we're looking at a temperature of 6 degrees up in the mountains. this is chuck pressler, he sent us a feet low a little bit earlier today, a beautiful shot of that winter sky up in the mountains but boy, is it cold 6 degrees there right now. 13 as we head over into portions of new jersey. in vincentown, this is douglas and he says it's frigid outside with gusty winds creating a brutal wind chill value of minus two. already seeing subzero wind chills. if you love (no audio). this is the area that's going to be feeling the chill most as we go through the overnight hours. we're already (no audio). we're not seeing snow being made at the moment but definitely will be able to make snow quite easily over the next few days as temperatures stay at or below freezing right through the weekend. we can barely get above freezing friday and sunday but not much. storm scan3 shows everything is clear we had a few snow squalls. now we've cleared the out and we're looking at a stray flurry here or there. the real story. these temperatures.

zero right now at mount pocono, nine in allentown 15 degrees at the airport and 14 right now in wilmington, delaware but look at how it feels. it feels like two below right now in philadelphia t it feels like 10 below zero already in lancaster. feels like 20 below in mount pocono and it feels right at zero in wildwood and take a look at some of the wind chills off to our west, seeing schools close across the northern plains and they go to school when it's minus 20 outside but wind chills are going to be in the minus 30 or 40 range in some spots tomorrow. again minneapolis feeling like minus 20 milwaukee at minus 21. so, the cold extends from the northern plains all the way to the east coast and tomorrow is going to be the coldest day yet. the winds will die down a bit so that will help but still wind chills below zero in the morning, single digits in the afternoon. friday gets a little bit better but it is still windy so even though we get back to the mid 30's, wind chills will be low. today we had them in the teens. as we head into tomorrow, subzero wind chills especially in the morning. then friday still windy, wind chills will be in the 20's. saturday we take a step backwards, wind chills back in the teens and then 20's again on sunday. so not normal at all really all week long. take a look at this. temperatures drop below freezing right around monday at 5:00 p.m. we expect them to stay below freezing at least until midday friday meaning we have 91 hours below freezing here in philadelphia. that's snow will be here for quite some time. overnight down to 8 degrees the record is two. already feeling subzero. that will continue through the overnight. for your thursday starting off subzero feeling like subzero at least the high just 20 in the afternoon.
