questioning a person of interest in the attack at a philadelphia parking garage. and life saving hands. how these quick thinking officers kept a family of three alive. kathy. >> cold gives way to warming temperatures and rain. "eyewitness news" starts isn't >> ♪ >> developing now at 10:00 a person of interest questioned following a brazen broad daylight attack. a woman sexually assaulted at a philadelphia parking garage. good evening to you i'm jessica dean much chris may is off tonight. police say this happened this morning at a garage on 17th and callowhill. "eyewitness news" reporter david spunt joins us live from special victims unit with developing details on this story. david. >> reporter: jess, today police here at suv confirm they have a male person of interest in custody. that person not officially a suspect yet. police are not saying that person's name just because they are a person of interest at this time. we know the victim is recovering in local hospital. police hope these evidence bags hold the key to identify the man they say sexually assaulted a 33-year-old woman just before lunch on new year's day. detectives spent hours collecting evidence at this parking garage at 17th and khalil. >> i have not had an issue in the three and a half years i've lived here. i feel very safe. so i'm very surprised. >> reporter: police say the suspect followed the woman sexually assaulted her then ran away. residents of one franklin towers use the garage every day. alexis tannenbaum lives in the building. >> i know my building has 24 hour security both inside the

building and the parking garage. >> reporter: police say the suspect somehow bypassed security and assaulted the woman on the second floor of the garage. "eyewitness news" spotted several security cameras. police are combing through the footage. >> i feel so in shock and very upset. i can't believe it. it's awful. >> reporter: police are still asking for the public's help. if you know anything that could help them with the investigation, they would love to hear from you. you can give them a call and remember you can always remain anonymous during this investigation. again, one person is a person of interest right now but police they would like to hear from you if you have information. we're live at special victims unit, david spunt "eyewitness news" on the cw philly. >> david thank you. new tonight health officials warn about two new cases of hepatitis a in hamilton township. both patients ate food from the same restaurant where a worker was infected. that was rosa's restaurant and catering on south broad street. one of the patients works at the hair port salon on south broad street. the other works as a part-time fitness instructor at hamilton area ymca's jkr branch on when i say horse mercerville road. health officials say if you've been to any of those three businesses you should contact your doctor or the health department. hepatitis a is a contagious liver disease that in rare cases can can cause death. the signs of a cold night in philadelphia. people bundled up as they make their way down the avenue of the arts on this new year's night. meteorologist kathy orr is on the cbs3 sky deck with a check on your frosty forecast. kathy. >> that's right, jessica, last

night we were down at the river rink at penn's landing ushering in the new year and it was pretty comfortable. tonight much colder and it's not really the temperature it's the wind. winds still about 10 to 15 miles an hour and those temperatures are falling fast. right now 36 in philadelphia. 30 in allentown the poconos 31 in reading as well but when you add the wind it feels much colder. 28 in philadelphia, the poconos 17. right now in reading it feels like 25. tomorrow morning we'll wake up to temperatures right around freezing but look at the wind chills. at 7:00 a.m. 23, 9:00 a.m. 25 and at 11:00 a.m., it will feel like it's 29. even though the temperature will be in the 30's. next all eyes on a developing storm to the south. warm enough for rain but this storm will be moving in overthe weekend. so, coming up we'll talk about that weekend rain and time it out for you and also a brief warmup. not going to last long but at least we'll have temperatures bouncing back to more comfortable levels. after that, it is back to blustery for january which typically is the coldest month of the year. we'll talk more about that with the seven-day forecast when i join you inside. >> okay, kathy thanks. the music the dancing the costumes the not new year's in philadelphia until you see the comics, the fancies the string bands and the fancy brigade shake their sequins. tonight cleanup is under way after another day full of tradition mixed with a little controversy z here's diana rocco. >> reporter: the parade route may have started off a little different this year but the celebration always culminates here on two street where the brigade took one last chance to perform and show off their costumes.

>> ♪ >> reporter: in south philadelphia style, mummers are partying the night away on two street. but new year's day started early for the 10 mummer brigades and the thousands that came out to see them. lining the parade route for fancies on display as they strutted their feathers and costumes. one hundred fifteenth year the big change this year was to the parade route. previously parades have started in deep south philadelphia and end heed at city hall. this year that flipped with brigades starting at city hall and marching south to washington street. 2 miles shorter but an attempt to draw more crowds. >> my sister, my niece and my brother are all marching witmer recomics so we're all here to root him on and yell and who the and holler and have a great time. >> i really like how they work so hard on the costumes. they're really awesome. >> reporter: then it's on to the convention center where the fancies put on their well choreographed and practiced shows. with music dance and props before audience of hundreds. when it's over everyone heads to two street to celebrate another year of hard work and philadelphia tradition. after the winners are announced it's back to the drawing board january 2nd where the 10 brigades start getting ready for next year. in south philadelphia, i'm diana rocco forints another ott cw philly. >> each group was scored throughout the day and night. we posted a list of the winners. the winners earn bragging rights. mourners remember a 10-year-old boy who was hit and killed by a police cruiser sunday night.

friends and family lit candles for matthew mccloskey in franklinville. his funeral is tomorrow. matthew's aunt said the whole family is grieving their whole loss and feel grateful for the outpouring of support. >> there's always going to be questions and peace is what everybody wants. we all just want peace. >> the officer who drove the cruiser is on leave while authorities investigate. a mother and her children are alive tonight thanks to brave camden county police officers. two officers were on patrol when they were alerted to a fire on the 800 block of atlantic of a yesterday. two others joined in. they kicked down the door. at that point the smoke was so thick one officer collapsed. they shouted for the mother to bring her four-year-old son and seven-year-old daughter to the rear window and that's when the officers formed a human net. >> guys were positioned, we put our hands together. >> the mother and children are listed in critical condition can. the injured officer was treater for smoke inhalation and released today. no word yet on the cause of this fire that tore through a burlington county warehouse overnight. firefighters rushed to the vacant building in mount holly around 3:30 this morning to find the heavy flames. they did manage to get things under control with no injuries but some people were forced from their homes. just five hours into the new year philadelphia police responded to their first homicide of the year. a 19-year-old man was shot in the head on the 5800 block of north philip street in olney. he was pronounced dead at the scene and so far no arrests.

"eyewitness news" has exclusive video tonight of a crashed van that police say was stolen by a patient at lake long medical center. the unidentified patient was still in a hospital gown and still had an iv in his arm when he tried to pull that off. police say the patient was airlifted to the hospital of the university of pennsylvania with serious injuries. we learn tonight that former new york governor mario cuomo has died. he served as governor of new york from 1983 to 1994. cuomo was hospitalized on november 5th with a heart condition. new jersey governor chris christie issued a statement saying in part our country and our region lost a giant today with the passing of governor mario cuomo. he was a strong eloquent leader who loved new york and its people. mary pat and i send our deepest condolences to matilda governor andrew cuomo and the entire cuomo family. mario cuomo was 82 years old. a new year brings higher gas taxes in pennsylvania. that tax went into effect at midnight. and it increases wholesale prices by nearly 10 cents a gallon. right now prices at the pump are still relatively low. according to aaa's latest numbers a gallon of regular costs an average of $2.54 in pennsylvania, that's going to be the highest in the area. in new jersey it's $2.27 a gallon and drivers in delaware are paying an average of $2.42. pennsylvania -- pennsylvania drivers now pay 70 cents a gallon in state and federal gas taxes and that's one of the highest rates in the nation. penndot says the taxes are needed for roadway improvements but not everyone is convinced. >> you can see the construction going on. you can see the improvements.

>> newborns in our area will have quite the story to tell when they grow up. mom says she was excited to spend the new year with her special little man. sophia was born at temple university hospital. her parents say she is a miracle they have been waiting for. >> she's special for so many reasons but that's just another -- another reason she's special. >> very excited yes. >> we've been waiting for 10 years for her. >> they can't wait to take their little girl home now. the delaware county spca runs a promotion that coincides with the new year and families swamped to the facility in media to bring home a furry family member for $20.15. now the price may have brought them in but every candidate had to be screened by a counselor and if he or she already has a met that animal had to be present too to make sure the potential siblings get along. >> just started jumping up and jumping up and he got all excited so we took him to the kennel and walked him and just fell in love with him. >> it's kind of like a match making process sort of like dating so we want to find the right match for these families. >> there are still plenty of animals at the facility looking for a great home. very cold weather right now, summer probably seems like even too much of a dream to think about. one of our area's favorite vacation spots is earning some high praise. ah according to trip advisor wildwood, new jersey, is the number one destination on the rise in the u.s.

these rankings are based on 52 spots around the world that have seen the greatest increase in positive reviews and wildwood finds itself in good company. it topped the list featuring nags head north carolina, prescott arizona telluride. >> kathy joining us now with her forecast. >> for the stormy weather it's more like spring weather than winter weather. we have cold and our eyewitness weather watchers are ringing in the new year with clear skies. the moon shining bright and also cold temperatures. take a look at these numbers really ranging from 30 to 35 degrees across-the-board. right now we're looking at a temperature of 30 degrees. doug is reporting in a very light wind in vincentown the relative humidity at 72 percent. pennsylvania side not much of a difference. temperature 30 degrees. in berwyn chris is reporting a pressure steady at 29.83-inches. delaware we have a freezing temperature in middletown and jason reporting a light wind at about 6 miles an hour. the winds a big issue a little bit early during the day today. some of the high temperatures in berwyn, pa, 46 degrees. phil reporting reporting in philadelphia 45n trenton peter says 42 for the high and sam in lansdale says 42. temperatures will be very similar tomorrow. if you would like to join the team and become an eyewitness weather watcher you can be featured in one of our newscasts, sign up now. just go to cbsphilly.com/watchers. it is a very pretty evening though a little bit on the chilly side. you can see this beautiful view from campbell's field

looking across the ben franklin bridge. last night at this time we were getting ready for the fireworks. tonight just a quiet but cold evening. at philadelphia international airport our temperature is 36 degrees. in the poconos colder at 30. the winds still helping to keep the temperatures up a little bit but they will fall rather quickly overnight. temperatures out west in the 30's unusually cold in dallas and abilene. 29 degrees. little rock 36. but still mild enough to see rain and this is where our storm is coming from. so all of this moving toward the northeast. associated with it an area of low pressure. a storm that will be moving in. but it will be to our west so once again this happened many times during the fall season, early winter season we stay on the warm side of the storm. so, as we go into the overnight hours into friday, that clear sky turns into sunshine with some high clouds moving in. highs will be in the 40's. it will be much like today. the rain arrives saturday afternoon. possibly a wintry mix in the lehigh valley, little bit of light snow at the start for the poconos but it all changes over to rain saturday night. sunday some heavy rain and a warm front lifts to the north. a surge of warm southerly winds move in and that means temperatures soar some 20 degrees into the 60's but once this low passes to the north and this cold front moves through late sunday into monday temperatures will fall and we'll be feeling the change big time. rain amounts saturday afternoon through sunday night our american model the gfs is saying .8 of a inch a more. overnight mainly clear to partly cloudy low 30 in the city 20's in the suburbs.

tomorrow a cold breeze, seasonably cold with a temperature of 42. on the exclusive eyewitness weather seven-day forecast, we'll warm it up a bit. sunday really the peek of the warmth and then you can see how much colder it gets. temperatures will be falling through the 30's. a chance of a snow shower tuesday. and thursday blustery, the high only 29. >> breaking news now on our top story. police sources tell "eyewitness news" a 32-year-old pittsburgh man has been charged in that sexual assault at a parking garage on 17th and callowhill in philadelphia. police say he faces several charges including rape, robbery and attempted murder. we will have much more on this story and its new developments on "eyewitness news" at 11:00. we'll be right b >> it's the grand daddy of them all, the rose bowl in pasadena oregon ducks led by marcus marriott at a. ducks on the attack. marriott at gets the lateral to nelson. they called him down before the line but the effort sets up a touchdown just a few plays later. final seconds in the second quarter, florida state with this 10-yard pitch. dashed by carlos williams. first half ends with ducks up by five. that's as close as it would get. five turnovers for the seminoles. oregon a gig -- big edge. oregon won the rose bowl 59 to 20. sugar bowl under way right now in new orleans. alabama crimson tide leading 21 to six over the ohio state buckeyes.

winner will play oregon for the national championship on january 12th in arlington. the outback bowl in tampa. auburn tigers wisconsin badgers. wisconsin trailing by three. a field goal in the final seconds. we skip ahead to overtime and here's the kick, the one that matters and it's just a little bit off. badgers win 34-31. across the state in orlando missouri and minnesota in the buffalo wild wings citrus bowl. missouri's mattie mawk with a nice pass. that's enough to give the tigers a victory at 33 to 17. michigan and baylor. baylor could wrap things up with a field goal but it's blocked. third and goal, they do or die and they do. a stunning come back win for michigan, 42 to 41. new year's day also means winter classic for hockey fans. this year the seventh in the series chicago blackhawks dropped the puck on 2015 at washington. washington jumped ahead in the first period, two goals by eric fehr and alex ovechkin. chicago tied it up in the second period with a shot in front. a third period washington back on the attack on a power play. they get the goal and the win for the final of three to two. meanwhile the flyers are hoping for a better luck in the new year. they lost 2014 in colorado with an overtime loss to the avalanche. they continue their road trip tomorrow night taking on the caroline hurricane. >> beasley thanks so much. we'll
