to hurricane irene. as hurricane irene raged, more than 2,000 customers lost power for days. >> it was very frustrating. >> reporter: tonight some frustrated customers sounded off about irene's aftermath. >> poorly run company, did a poor job. >> we lose power all time. >> saturday, sunday, monday,tuesday, wednesday, thursday, flashlights. couldn't eat. had to go buy all our food. all the food in the freezer completely lost. >> reporter: susan o'brien says lost power could be dangerous for the nursing home she represents. >> just as a hospital, we believe nursing homes especially large nurses homes should be prioritized as well. >> reporter: it wasn't just homes and business that were in the dark. students here missed a week of classes because of the power outages. bob slowie's kids were home from school, electricity was out for eight days. >> i would like to at least

have somebody drive by and say we're working on it. anything. >> reporter: rob gold says irene was an epic storm causing an estimated $81 million in damage. >> we were hearing from our guys on the field that this was a storm that brought unprecedented damage. >> reporter: the company working on better communication with customers in the future. >> reporter: bge has submitted this 67 page report to the commission, bge will have their opportunity in front of the committee next month. >> the commission would need to approve any rate increases to cover the cost of hurricane irene. the fire is out but the smoke remains after a massive tire fire in northwest baltimore. this was the scene yesterday as the auto repair shop went up in flames. tonight firefighters are still finding smoldering tires. the department says despite the smell it is safe to breathe the

air. no word yet on how the blaze started. serious charges against a baltimore city police officer he's accused of leading county police on a drunken high speed chase. tonight he is off the job. wjz is live. kai jackson has the accusations and how the police department is responding. >> reporter: officer smith is charged with dui and speeding and these charges have placed his career in jeopardy. this happened friday september 23rd. they say a patrol clocked a speeding black car at 78. investigators say when the patrol officer attempted to stop smith he kept going. in the charging document, the officer drove the lexus failed to stop and rapidly accelerated and crossed over all lanes cutting in front of several

other vehicles. they say smith abruptly stopped his car on lower baltimore drive. baltimore county police say when they finally caught up with city officer timothy smith they had to forcibly remove him from his car and place him in handcuffs. according to charging documents, officers found the defendants eyes to be glassy and blood shop and his speech slurred. >> he is currently suspended working administrative duties which means his gun and badge have been taken away. officer timothy smith faces a criminal investigation. once that's complete an internal investigation by the city police department for whom he worked, back to you. >> kai thank you. officer smith is a five year veteran of the department. power for sale. that is the charge as the prosecution lays out its corruption case against euleses curry. the power could bring down one

of the state's most powerful politician. >> are you feeling confident about this trial? >> no comment. >> reporter: 74-year-old state senator euleses curry saying little now, but all the while claiming his innocence. the evidence will accomplish beyond a reasonable doubt shoppers bought the power of a state senator. he sold his power for nearly a quarter of a million dollars. in 2003 through 2008, it is claimed he used his power. his political maneuvering allowed shoppers to transfer a liquor license from to the college park neighborhood. all without ever disclosing he was working as a paid consultant for the grocery chain.

curry's defense attorneys are trying to convince jurors that while he may have failed to disclose a conflict of interest, he did nothing illegal. this was not a secret, there were no secret files in the safe his attorneys told jurors. not only did he disclose every dime and dollar he got from shoppers he paid taxes on it. not one dime of maryland state money go to shoppers. shoppers did not buy his influence. did not buy the chain, did not buy him. they have a number of witnesses they would like to call. the trial is expected to last six weeks. at the federal courthouse, derek valcourt, wjz eyewitness news. along in the trial, are two shoppers. postal workers rally against drastic cuts. >> we just want to get the mail out. we don't want a bail out. >> reporter: the workers are

cast in central maryland right now. the complete forewarning weather forecast is coming up. unbelievable scenes from the philippines as a typhoon turns streets into rivers. at least 18 people have died and more than 100,000 have been forced to evacuate. rain fell at a rate of an inch an hour while winds gusted up to 90-miles-an-hour. manila has not seen flooding like this in decades. the number of deaths from listeria tainted cantaloupes continue to grow. 13 deaths have been linked to the fruit and three more may be connected. a maryland woman is among those who has died. the outbreak has been traced to a farm in colorado. the produce was sold in 25 states but not in maryland. most healthy adults are not

affected by listeria. however, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems are at high risk. fire officials say a possible leak in the basement watt -- nationwide controversy over an actress flying out of bwi marshall airport. she is calling for a boycott of southwestern airlines because she says she was thrown off a flight for kissing her girlfriend. the kiss took place on a flight off southwest. actress lisa shelian who was seen on the l word and was most recently seen on csi says she was escorted off the plane for
