good evening, everyone. burning cars and death in the streets. thousands are protesting tonight, calling for their president to step down. now americans are being put on emergency flights out of that country. here's the latest for wjz. >> reporter: egyptian government fighter jets roared low over cairo minute before a tear curfew on sunday. but thousands of protestors remained outside throughout the night. opposition leader dr. barraday joined them and echoed the sentiment for president mubarak to step down after 30 years. looters burned vehicles and broke into stores overnight. state tv showed what it said are dozens of inmates captured after they broke out of prison, but many more are still free. tanks guarded cairo's museum where the king tut exhibit and

ancient mummies are on display after looters tried to storm in saturday. the state department issued travel warning for american citizen in egypt, recommending they leave as soon as possible. now, the u.s. embassy in egypt is make arrangements to begin flying americans out on monday. secretary of state hillary clinton urged the egyptian government to remain law and order but protect peaceful protestors and their right to express themselves. >> we're focusing on a transition to meet the needs of the egyptian people and will truly establish democracy. >> reporter: the military filled the gap for police forces, which are just returning to the streets. so far, the armed forces have not cracked down on peaceful protestors who say they won't leave until mubarak resigns. >> according to our media partner "the baltimore sun," the university of maryland has several students study in egypt this summer. all have been in contact with

the school, except for one. burned alive, a cat is recovering tonight after animal rescuers said it was doused in fuel and then set on fire. wjz is live at the animal shelter tonight. derek has more on the disturbing story. >> reporter: that's the kind of story that can make you cringe, the first case of animal abuse in the city so far this year. a word of warning to our sensitive viewers -- some pictures of the cat your about to see are tough to look at. [ meow ] >> i know, beatty. >> reporter: mittens the cat has a lot to me you about. she is alive after a harrowing ordeal. >> she was intentionally set on fire with lighter fluid, thrown in a mill crate. >> reporter: third-and-fourth- degree burns on her back and side and trauma to her ears. despite it all, vets expect mittens will recover. >> she's a little worse for the wear. her ears will probably fall off and she will heal. she is growing some hair back here. you know, her medication is

take care of her. it's long-term. >> reporter: police are work mittens' case but could not provide information. animal shelter rescuers said it happened january 8 in the 3300 block of st. ambrose in west baltimore. >> from the report, it looks as though she ran and extinguished herself and came back to fight her kittens. >> reporter: you're right. mittens is a mama. her three kittens were born before her serious burns despite her injuries, vets said she is taking excellent care of her family. >> i know. >> reporter: mittens' recovery is expect to take several months. meanwhile, police are not able to confirm whether any juveniles were arrested. back to you. >> the people who did this are sick, derek. thank you. the animal shelter takes in 12,000 animals a year. we'll update you on the investigation. >> a man shot in the head in broad daylight on 2:30 this afternoon on 25700 block of east bury avenue.

the man's condition is not released but homicide detective have been notified of the crime. a man robbed at gunpoint in anne arundel county. three teens are charge with holding a man on tiffany drive in deal. detectives said they showed victim a gun and forced them to hand over cash. police tracked down these three superintendents in a car mean the scene of the robbery. a college bar goes up in flames and tonight, the investigation continues into the fire that destroyed the charles village pub in towson. more than 100 firefighters battled the flames last night. it shut down the heart of towson for hours. it likely start in the kitchen. we're still waiting for the official cause, however. texting while driving is claiming more lives. one study say that 5,000 people are killed every year. now a maryland entrepreneur has invented new technology that could save lives.

well, it cost $5 a month and working on all smartphones but the iphone but could change in the near future. we have just learned that last week's snowstorm is officially in the history books. that fast-moving storm cause plenty of problems across maryland. boy, you will remember that if you were stuck on 83. tonight, the national weather service confirmed a record. meteorologist tim williams has the detail in the first warning weather center so it was bad, wasn't it? >> it really was, adam. details just came into the first warning weather. the record set back in 1966 were eclipse by wednesday's snowstorm. we got 7.8-inches at bwi marshal, 7% 3 at dulles. the old records were around 6.5 inches so for that particular day, wednesday, january 26 -- yes, we went into the record books. again, it's not exactly the way we want to start the year.

a horrific crime scene in tampa, florida, where a mother admitted to murdering her own children because they "talked back." police arrived at the home of julie schnecker in the backyard, covered in blood. her 16-year-old daughter was shot to death in a bedroom and her 13-year-old son dead in the garage. hundreds of people attended the candle light vigil in memory of the siblings last night.

the day. 42 degrees help to start melt down or continue melting down some of the snow already on the ground. overnight lows stale bit chilly. we will continue this drill of freezing and refreezing every day and night as these temperatures stay above freezing again. watch out for thin ice on the ground in the morning and we seem to be melting it down through the day. we got to 54 now. now we're down to 37 at the airport. 35 in ocean city. the river at 36 this evening. 27 in oakland and 36 in cumberland. winds are come in from the northwest currently around most of the state, light breeze, calm at the airport. and this is what we're talking about as far as the cold and warm air mixing in. we're not far from either. we're on the line and that is really our problem here. we're at 37. temperatures to our north in detroit and chicago out to the northwest -- even towards kansas city -- in the 20s. down to our south -- atlanta, carolinas, memphis -- in the 60s. and that is why we are gonna have problem with the next storm system moving on through.

it is going to be the result of high pressure directing very cold, arctic air over top of us. that will stay with us if remainder of the next two days and then we'll get a fluctuation of warm air. with several systems move into the region, gulf moisture, with two separate portions of a system from the west that will close in here and start to fill up and move into our area. as they start to pull on in, what we're going to see is that air mixing. cold irair means whatever come in, freezes. warmer air means whatever it hits will melt down. that will make for a mix of sleet, freezing rain, potentially snow mixed in there. but we never get dominated by one or the other. on wednesday at a point, temperatures up to about 47- degrees but then drop off. what starts potentially overnight tomorrow night as basically a light snow mix into tuesday will then turn to maybe freezing rain on tuesday, melting down on wednesday, spending again with a bit of

freezing rain and sleet. that is the problem we're going to have -- the sleet and freezing rain could mean for a quarter inch or to half inch of rain on the roads. tonight, 21 degrees. 32 our temperature tomorrow. turning cloudy with overnight coating of snow and then again, that frozing precipitation and then tuesday into wednesday, temperatures will start to go up and then drop off again -- sleet, freezing rain, temperatures back down to 32 and 30 for thursday and friday. it's just gonna be a bit of mess, eye dam. >> i know you will keep a close eye on it. thank you. sports is next. we'll l ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
