7:11 am
loader, please call this number, 410-396-5752. obviously there's a lot of snow that needs to be moved. call that number if you have a bob cat or a front end loader. this gentleman is kind enough to come over. we saw him. what's your name? lee. >> how long have you been out? >> about midnight last night. >> what's it been like? >> it was raining. now it's all snow again. we just had it all cleaned up are from the storm before. i was down here two days on that one. back at it again. nowhere to put it. >> how long will you be out? >> i guess until it stops and we get rid of it. >> you are just piling it up on the side. >> we supposedly have some trucks coming to haul it out. >> where you hauling it? >> they're taking it to a vacant lot.

7:14 am
we have rob with us from bge. that cannot be a pretty sighing four and your crews to see that. >> no. i was up at 5:00 and i was looking outside. we have an equal amount of customers out of power. we expect that number to climb because of people who knew they did not have to go to work or school and slept in. they'll wake up and probably find they don't have power or they're going to be losing power. so broken record. when you know you have lost power, don't assume we know it. pick up the phone and call us.
7:15 am
with theses about bedses up and the wind kicking up, and the blizzard warnings, we'll have power outages today. >> some people have laughed at the past couple days when they say we're giving out a number to report power outages to people wore watching tv who obviously have power. you right down that number and you might not of the power in an hour. you can still make the call. >> that's right. you will probably have to make the call on a cell phone or corded phone. those things we used to use that have cords connected to the wall. thoses are things we need. you need to have the battery and flashlight. you need to have the portable generator if you have one. make sure it's properly vented. these are all things to think about in advance. if you are depending on electrical equipment for medical needs or have a relative that is, make sure you have plans in place. we're good about getting out there and restoring power.
7:16 am

7:18 am
7:19 am
the snow is now coming down with a vengeance. tim williams has the weather. >> we've been watching this system play out. it's continuing to play out through the latter portion of this morning. temperatures have reached our high of 30 and we expect to now start falling as a result of hitting that high now coming down. because we're below freezing in just about every place except ocean city everyone is seeing snow. we have 96% humidity. a north-northwesterly wind at 6. that northwest wind is bringing in the cold air. we have a falling barometer now at 29.37.
7:20 am
moisture everywhere all the way. you are seeing the couper clockwise flow. that is a function of the nor'easter type conditions moving up the coast. towson around the beltway really, everyone seeing snow showers right across the region. westminster out toward sykesville and all of carroll county, frederick toward gare eat algapey counties, fen seeing the snow panhandle of west virginia and our friendings along the mason dixon line, north of that line in pennsylvania up toward york county and over toward chambersburg is seeing showers. that will be the case throughout the day. winds will pick up. they're just starting to become a factor when you talk about the gusts. 30 degrees is the temperature. we're looking at 33 in elkton. 10 in oakland. 38 ocean city. northwest wind is bringing in the colder are air. some of the temperatures are reflecting the cold northwest wind. 10-mile-per-hour wins in cumberland. look at the gusts now starting
7:21 am
to really pick up. our sunrise is 7:0 4-6789d temperatures will level out here. we'll be dealing with cold air in place as that nor'easter starting to really set up shop. with winter storm warnings still in effect for most of the area until 3:00, but blizzard warnings in effect for most of the state from northeast maryland across the northernitier toward anne arundel county, lower eastern shore. that's because the winds will create visibility issues. we'll be seeing less than a quarter mile visibility with winds gusting up to and sustained at 35 miles per hour or greater. that's for a period of time of three hours or more. that's what constitutes the blizzard warnings. right now 30 degrees our high and falling heavy snow in the morning and then a snow shower through the after the noon. in the afternoon and evening we'll see the snow early and
7:22 am
then the wind will start blowing it around. 259 overnight low. mostly sunny, windy and cold, 4 for the high tomorrow. 34 the height tomorrow. we'll continue to keep you posted as this system develops and gives us this next one-two punch. tim just said anne arundel county getting strong winds and heavy snow. we have the county executive on the phone with us. good morning. >> you don't hear the -- >> i wanted to tell you that we were low yesterday and our salt. we have about 2,000 tons of salt left. the good news is very shortly we'll have full capacity, 12,000 tons of salt will be delivered to us. yesterday we were able to secure 400 tons of salt. you are right. these strong winds at 35 miles per hour and greater are headed our way with the blizzard conditions. we have close to to 300 trucks on the road.
7:23 am
7:24 am
7:25 am
>> i started yesterday. >> of course we're in good
7:26 am
spirits, just plugging away. >> reporter: plugging away in traffic is a real challenge. on monument street, front end loaders have to make their way through gridlock to find waiting trucks. >> please be patient with us. i think they did a good job. >> i think they're doing a good job. >> i see people out working and i believe everybody is trying to do the best they can. >> reporter: there is also a plus size for those doing the moving. >> i'm knot complaining. it's money. >> reporter: with more to be made, more snow on the way to be hauled to the inner harbor. >> and quickly, this is a
7:27 am
statement from the maryland democrat of environment, clean snow removed from paveed areas may be placed into large bodies without causing adverse impacts. those are the guidelines from the maryland department of environment. they say it will not have a lasting impact. in terms of visibility outside, we have these huge antennas on top of the tvs. i'm close to them and losing sight of them. it's getting to be that thick out here. i can't see the top of the big reason antenna. i know we're not in blizzard conditions yet but certainly visibility is less tip. back to you. >> thank you for reading that. all the snow on the streets
7:28 am
right now is going to go through the storm system and end up in the harbor anyway. it's a cay of putting it there now or waiting for it to trickle in later. it's all in the same place. if you have someplace you want to go, weapon advice against it but here is traffic control. the morning commute is just as we imagined it would be, very messy. cissoid of the beltway on the outer loop we have an accident blocking the right lane. 70 westbound at marriottsville road, and watch for a crash on north congressling at 11. activity on 83 southbound between belfast and sean. and there is a look at more activity following this all morning. here is a lock at drive times
7:29 am
and speeds. two of these are on the beltway. there is a live look at 95 at mountain road, and 83 at warren road, very snowy at this hour. brought to you by bill's carrot warehouse. back to you. we'll continue with the complete first warning weather coverage now. marty is taking mary's place in the outback, waiting for the snow to accumulate. >> we tried to bring you several observations this morning. one thing you'll be hearing from every crew out, is that this is a different tip of snow than the one we had over the weekend. everything was dry, fluffy snow. it landed, piled up. this is a wet snow. it's been mixed at times with
7:30 am
sleet, rain at times. as a result t frozen precipitation has been mixed in. sometime the amounts are not as great. nonetheless it's going to create quite the difficulty when you go out and around. it's creating an ice layer on the ground. now that this storm is starting to pick up in intensity, the radar shows moisture moving across the region. the radar composites shows the different layers. we've had all the blue there, sleet and rain down there. most of us are seeing snow because temperatures have taken a dive. that's also now just kind of rotating all the moisture back across the area. we're seeing wave after wave of snow showers that are more intense than the ones just before them.
7:31 am
national weather service issued a blizzard warnings in effect for all the areas shaded in pink through 7:00 tonight. they go into effect at 10:00. we talk about how the different kennedy of snows and sleet play into the moisture totals. our totals have been pretty much still off the chain because they're adding onto what we had over the weekend. >> it's interesting. i'll explain the weather stick behind me in a few minutes. we came on the air at 4:30, it was early calm. it was actually really creepy. you know how you kind of get that bad feeling that something not good is going to happen. that's what the overnight hours felt like. that's something not good. conditions have deteriorated by 75, 80% since we kale on the
7:32 am
air. i stuck this snow stick out here saturday and it hasn't moved. after storm one we were at 16 inches. owe the course of a couple days between evaporation and the snow settling, yesterday it was at 17 inches. when i came in this morning it was at 1 inches. now we're up to 24 inches. do the math. we picked up 7 inches since about 4:00 yesterday afternoon. that's here on tv hill. all the time look at snow totals from other locations around, keeping in mind we're going for a total of 12 to 18. so you can start with this.
7:33 am
with the city locations, we're trying the give you a lock at different counties and different locations. northwest baltimore 4.6, columbia 3.5. and all the time take a look at the estimated snowfall totals when this is over. 12 to 18 inches of snow. i want you to note that locally 20-plus, understand we have the low pressure offshore. as this ramps up, it will become a blizzard. we're going to go the least effects of the blizzard throughout the entire 95 corridor. it's not a rosy picture. in three hours you're not walking around skipping.
7:34 am
it's going to be bad. but the real very texas of the energy of the storm is going to be northeast of maryland. however, northeast corner of maryland will see up to 20 inches plus. then we start dealing with the winds. you start getting these 45- plus-mile-an-hour gusts out of the nor'easter and it's a bad day at the beach real quick. gail warnings either side of the bay, 35-mile-an-hour to 45- mile-an-hour gusts on those adjacent counties. inland 25 to 35-mile-an-hour gusts. this is really deteriorating. the morning and through the day, it's not going to get any better. as a matter of fact, it's going to go bad to worse before it gets better. let's lower it back inside. >> thank you very much. amazing to watch the accumulation out there. the snow is really coming down.
7:35 am
another human barometer, andrea in hampton. >> reporter: good morning. the wind has picked up quite a bit. you can see the snow accumulation out here. we've only been here for a couple minutes. you can see how the snow is swirling and going this direction now. a few seconds later it will be going the other direction. these people are pretty hard to see. i don't know if you can make them out through the camera there. conditions are getting worse. that man was almost tripping trying to get over the curb. some people are out and about. earlier today we saw a lot of plow, several of them going up and down the street. i haven't seen one for a couple
7:36 am
hours. conditions are getting pretty bad and snow is really accumulating.# a few hours ago it was almost bare pavement. i went to a rural farm about a half hour ago to get some coffee. there's almost nobody in there. some employees in there, trying to get their seasons of what they're feeling with all the snow. they are like when is this going to end. not only is it hurting business for them in the mornings, but they are just tired of it. people are wanting this winter weather to end. >> we all feel the same way, can't believe it's snowing again. we're going to check more after this break. stay with us. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
7:37 am
7:38 am
7:39 am
21 before 8:00, just lock at that whiteout. we can't see more than a block and a half. you see the rush hour this morning is starting to resemble last night's. everybody is moving slowly. look like we've had an accident
7:40 am
there. that's what it looks like if you're out there driving. good morning, jim. >> conditions are tough. the main roads are passable. that's fine. that's the way this storm is going to be. a lot of it is going to be slow going because we'll have to move a lot of snow. there's a lot of work being done by me and women and these crews that have been working. another great example of
7:41 am
remarkable work is the firefighters. we had five additional people there and they had additional had had a line here. it was a remarkable save. a lot of good things happening out there. people should be proud of the public services they have working on the highways and the fire service. i mean, it's pretty extraordinary. >> anything specific today? >> one of the things we have to do is make sure people
7:42 am
recognize and understand that we are providing fire service. we are running there. we are hall looking at evaluating other spikes where we can move equipment. so we're going to provide fire service for them. we're concentrating on brigging in additional backhoe an front end loaders. we've contacted contractors in connecticut, north carolina. we have more than 400 pieces of equipment either here on on their way and more than 500 people. this is going to be a digging out of snow. we're going to need the horses to do it. now let's go out to
7:43 am
richard. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. >> you have the overall view of the state. how are we doing at this point? >> i think we're, you know, struggling right now. the best thing is for people to stay off the road. it's going to be a challenge for the next 8 or 10 hours, no doubt about it. >> is there any particular area that seeps to be drawing your attention most at the moment? >> not really. we're waiting for the wind to pick up. we're concerned about the even this morning with the fire station. that kind of had our attention for a few hours. everything else has been quiet. >> we're showing traffic cams talking to you. it's amazing what we've seen so far on some major highways. >> quickly. of course as everybody's been
7:44 am
saying, it's very hazardous out there. we are concerned about the plow routes and watching that closely. >> anything el to impart? >> stay off the roads until there's an emergency. be patient. we'll try to get the roads cleared as quick as possible. >> thank you very much for talking to us. we'll organize our effort here and take a break. we'll be right back. ,,,,,,,,,,,
7:45 am
7:46 am
7:47 am
it's gotten really bad out here. we've been averaging at and inch an hour. since i last spoke with you, the total didn't go up an inch. we havement had that velocity yet. that's going to be later on. i'm wondering if the winds will reseat this stick here in a second. as we speak it's going to bring an all-out blizzard. believe it or not we are going to get the least effect of the blizzard. this thing will hit us and go. the long-term effects going to be northeast of the area. this is not going to be a
7:48 am
pleasant afternoon. believe me when i tell you the blizzard conditions start, the blizzard warning goes in effect at 10:00. that low is now maturing. energy is temperaturing from the ohio valley to offshore. it is that low continuing to grow and we'll see the wind start to pick up. we're beginning to see the intensity of the snow start to pick up. that's not a good combo. the wet, heavy snow and problems just start going multilevel. heavy snow, 30 degrees has already been the daytime high. we're in the 20s, overnight low about 25 tonight. tomorrow it's going to be windy, blowing conditions and residual problems, no condition. we are going to get a break thursday, friday, saturday and sunday. weather wise it will be okay but averaging 10 degrees below
7:49 am
normal. i spoke with bernadette and she's in the sure it's beginning to be a significant heavy duty scenario. nonetheless, there's more snow on the horizon. tell you what i want to do is go back inside. >> we just got another e-mail on the computers. that's begun to work again. seems like computer and phone communications have been affected by this. next we're going to tim williams over in the first warning weather center. >> we look hat the radar and get an idea this system is just really set up over us now. you see the storm kind of moving up the east coast and eastern sea board, seeing the rotation as the storm is setting up along the shore. crew ares the renal, everyone is for the most part freezing. every you're see is coming down 2349 form of snow. on the wider scan you see the
7:50 am
heavy snow showers south of hagerstown. we are looking at bake an all- snow event. we've seep a little rain earlier this morning but right now this is all supported with colder temperatures and what we're dealing with now is pretty much snow throughout. the national weather service again issued a blizzard warning in effect for all the areas there in the pink. they keep adding counties to this. they are starting to trickle up the # 5 ardor. again, this goes into effect at 10:00 this morning, stays with us through this evening. visibility is expected to be very low, wind gusting to 55 miles an hour for three hours or more. it have wind gusts we've been forecasting, 35 to 45 miles an hour say from the 95 corridor
7:51 am
making a swoop on down toward roughly cambridge. from that point down to the lower eastern shore, 45-mile-an- hour gusts plus. farther out west, 25 to 35 miles an hour. again, the snow is really causing problems with the visibility. again, we are expecting more. we'll have the complete update coming up. we'll continue to update you on forest warning weather. >> we'll have another accumulation actuality from ron, standing by in canton where somebody is at work. >> you know, they sure are, trying to clear the sidewalks here. let me echo what marty and tim have been saying all morning. the wind here are really starting to pick up. the conditions are getting worse by the hour and it's not pleasant to be out.
7:52 am
hardly anybody is out this morning, a virtual ghost town. boston street nearly 8:00 would be packed and jammed, right now not a car on the highway. baltimore needs your help with bobcats and front end loaders, please call (410)396-5752 if you're a contractor with a bobcat or present end loader. this type of snow, blizzard situations can have life threatening consequences. we'll take you back to a story we did last night. you met ann, who lives in northwest baltimore. her husband was in desperate need of dialysis. >> it was my husband's fourth day without dialysis. the fourth day. he can't go like that's. >> reporter: dozens of people saw that story and responded to
7:53 am
it. they went to the neighborhood, helped dig out their home and took him to get his dialysis treatment. the gentleman who took him to his treatment want today remain anonymous. we respect that. he's promised to take him to the next appointment as well. that's what happens in these type of situations in the worst of times, as the best comes out of the people of baltimore. hats off to all the folks who went and helped them last night, got him to his dialysis treatment. city schools closed today and closed for the rest of the week, and we urge you again, don't even think about going out. we have to tell you, we've met a numb of people here this morning who are headed over to johns hopkins hospital, doctors and nurses and other workers,
7:54 am
critical employees. that's happening at hospitals all around the area. it's a difficult time. and the visibility is really starting to drop here has the fog begins to set in and wind pick up. that's a great story about ann and her husband. thank all the viewers for responding and getting him to his treatment. back to you. >> thank you very much. we thank them very much. not only the public works people, safety people going out, but all the citizens have gone out and helped people in need because of this storm that's out there. don't put yourself in need. don't go for a drive if you don't have to. here is sharon in traffic control. it's getting more difficult to get around.
7:55 am
look at this accident on the eastbound side of the beltway, pulaski. only one lane that's not coffered with snow there on the east side. west side of beltway, visibility starting to be reduced in that area as well. and you're looking at one only 895 southbound at almost bard street, and watch for an accident on preston wick at loop 450, 83 southbound near belfast and activity there. that continues. there is a look at the three slowest spots on the major roadways. 21 is your average speed. there's a live look at the west side of the beltway. that is what you're dealing

hello again. we are a minute away from 8:00. if you are tuning in to see "the early show," we are pre- empting them to keep track of the conditions that may lead to worse things by later today. >> like blizzard-like conditions. >> taking mercy. >> thank you. did a little hair spray, shake out the hair. i was outside for two hours. really a remarkable difference in terms of 6:00 and 8:00, the snow has picked up and the winds have picked up a lot too. >> we have lots of reporters still outside. marty will be in as well in a moment. right over where tim is working. tim, take it. >> you know, we have been
8:00 am
talking all morning about how the storm system has been playing out through the day. now looking at two areas of low pressure converging on the region and it means a lot of power, wind and definitely the snow picking up into the latter portion of this morning. we have been seeing steady snow showers after snow showers and some of them solidly coming down heavy overtimes. a tour around the beltway. we're looking at columbia, pikesville seeing steady snow shower, and west, much of the same story. a bit of a break if you look west of flintstone, but we've getting another wave of moisture moving through. lower eastern shore has a bit of a challenge this morning. the temperatures above freezing
8:01 am
at time, 36 early this morning so. a mix as we talked about earlier this week. their mix has been rain, a bit of sleet and a bit of snow. but all this is going to make for a very difficult and just tough morning for anybody who has to be out and around. we're going to throw it over. she's going to take a look at what's going on with the radar. just a big storm and a big mess. >> it. is and we have been tracking it through the night here. one was the low that jumped from tennessee over the mountains down to the carolina coastline. that's now off to the northeast a little bit. and it brought in a little of the warmer air. and even a little bit f a break. the other low going onto the west there. is going to drive the rest of the storm system. as it swings by, that's what's going to explode these winds and more moisture and drawing down really cold air from the
8:02 am
north. that's why we say this is not done. a lot of people think, oh, you just got to finish with it. and as this low swings by, it's going to intensify, tap into more moisture and it's going to bring colder air in so the moisture will be coming in to colder air for more snow. we have seen the blizzard warnings get exthe ended to more counties. i'm holding off on that because marty is going to speak more about that in a moment. we have topped out at our high, down to 30 in baltimore. 37 in ocean city in the form of rain. the mixing line hung on for a while along the eastern shore. sleet and even freezing rain in cases. got some emails that there were hours of icing going on. that sort of wound down a little bit, but picked up again earlier this morning. you are going to get into the
8:03 am
snow when the cold air starts to take over from west to east. down to 8 in oakland. and just to the west of this area, a lot of temperatures in the teens. there is colder air out there. it's going to moderate as it comes our way. winds turning around. that will bring in some colder air. that's going to take some time before we get back in the cold air and the snow takes over for everyone. the winds with picking up. that's the other part of the storm. we're really concerned with it. and the bands of heavier snow, they kicked up a little. this is only going to pick up through the next few hours. that's why the blizzard warning does not go into effect until 10:00 a.m. because we are just beginning with that part of the storm. for more on that, we are going to accepted it to marty in the outback.
8:04 am
>> it's a very heavy wet snow to sosa i want to paint a picture of what we have in the outback for everybody watching. good morning there. is a natural park-like setting behind wjz. it got its name, we have picnic tables out here. about five minutes ago, a wind gust came across the building and i heard this awful creeking and i looked up at the tree, four, five stories tall and they were creeking. you could feel the branches moving. and this wet, heavy almost crusty snow trying to fall off of the branches which are now all sag like this so. a god send would be drier,
8:05 am
puffier snow that doesn't weigh as much onto that region. frankly, that captain come soon enough. watch, warnings and advisory. the blizzard notification has started to race across the map. check it out, most counties in maryland with the exception of far western maryland and the 50 corner going down are under a blizzard warning in anticipation of this low cranking up. now once the low patses, a beam of ocean city starts moving itself up the coastline. the blizzard warnings will be dropped from west, southwest to east to northeast. but in a winter storm warning through 7:70 tonight there. is a day of a lot of changes and not an easy one by any stretch of the imagination. and i think we're painting the picture calmly. i think we are maintaining an even strain in a couple of hours. throw it back inside. >> you know, i heard those
8:06 am
trees cracking. >> yeah, you did. >> it gets your attention. >> yes, it does. >> very much so. >> i bet it does. >> not nice. not nice at all. the mayor of ocean industry city is on the phone standing by. are you there? >> good morning. >> give us the situation in ocean city right now? >> well right now, we're experiencing the calm before the some. we've got light drizzle going on. but as you have been talking about, the temperatures are going to gradually drop and we're expecting snow to move in sometime later on this morning and probably expecting up to 6 inches or more during the day and throughout the early evening. >> we're watching the map, you're the warmest place in maryland, you're at 38. but a lot of people traveling the three hours to get a extra nine degrees. and they showed the wind arrows. the wind is coming off the bay
8:07 am
side. is that a problem? >> no, it's not a problem. we suffered very little erosion during the last storm. and now that the winds are from the north, northwest that shouldn't cause us any problems at all. but we continue expect it to cause any flooding, even many the low-lying areas. icy conditions, a lot of strong winds and throughout the day later today, we're going to encourage people to stay inside station off the roads and let this pass and everybody be safe. >> how bad it was damage this weekend into when the wind was come from you the ocean side? >> we checked out the beach. actually minor, minor damage if any at all. we were fortunate. we only went through one high tide psych billion the storm. >> -- tide cycle with with the storm. >> anything you want to say to residents? >> we want everybody to be
8:08 am
aware of the bad weather condition, expulse businesses are closed. hopefully this will move through, get out of here and everything will clear out in time. >> we'll check in with you throughout the day and throughout our coverage. the storms are going to intensify over the next couple of hours. thank you. >> look forward to walking down the beach getting a tan. >> that is the image we want to see. absolutely. i love taking the ocean city cams when it's beautiful out. >> yeah, we're going to take a cam in baltimore city right now. and no walking the beach there. >> no, i sure wish i was. i'm actually going home to high high in a cup -- to hawaii in a couple of weeks and i can't wait. >> hawaii's a little nicer. >> just a little nicer. swirling snow, that's what's going on here. almost blizzard-like conditions. i know it's going to get a lot
8:09 am
more wind i did, but visibility is pretty bad. we're almost going to lose sight of him. we can't see him beyond those street lights up there. and for those of you who have missed shoveling, well good news, there's more to shovel there. is a sidewalk where we've only seen a cup people here and there shoveling their sidewalks. some of the business owners. probably about a few inches. it's really fluffy snow. word reminders for city employees. we're told that city employees will not be reporting to work today. it's a man story furlough day -- mandatory furlough day. but you don't want to be out in this anyway. just stay home. it's almost a ghost town out
8:10 am
here. stay in and be cozy indoors. >> i'm surprised that nobody has ventured out to at least start shovel. >> i think people are over it. >> yeah. >> we're tired of it. >> sick and tired of it. and maybe we'll start to see some people here and they were probably listening to the news knowing that it's going to continue to snow later throughout the day. so it's still early. maybe they're just in bed. >> it will be nice when the snow transitions to really, really fluffy. i bet your coat is soaked. >> it is. and i think if people were to start shoveling right now, it would be easy. there's ice underneath it, a lot of it left over from the previous storm. now would be a good time to get a handle on it. >> but that's the danger of shoveling today. you're going to dig under and hit that ice. >> and you're going to be sorry
8:11 am
you didn't get the earlier snow. >> call on your husband or friend to do it: >> thank you. reporting live for us. >> she brought up another great idea, the local government had, take a mandatory furlough day and take it today. and then they adopt have the furlough day later on. the other one is downtown parking garages are free to get your car out of the street. and i think a great idea, dumping the snow in the harbor. getting rid of the snow. we got more coming obviously. >> and the snow mounds are huge. our coverage of round two ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
8:12 am
8:13 am
coming up on 814:67:89 that's a catchy phrase, a
8:14 am
february to forget. and we've got 18 days more of february before we see march. >> let's hope these days of february are forgotten a bit. although we're here to remind you that it's a tough go for today and until at least friday or saturday. marty bass is standing by in the outback with more on the weather conditions outside. >> as a matter of fact, a chance for you to let everybody in your family, all your friends from out of town know about the weather conditions. it's 39 days until spring. we're doing something cool. we did this during storm number one and got a huge response. we are treatmenting this broadcast at wjz.com. and every once in a while we give you this real nice pure picture that you can, that somebody from england, the steps of russia can tune in, can log on and see what's going
8:15 am
on in baltimore, maryland. somebody maybe trying to describe to friends and family from out of town. there's another thing, for you happen to be social networking talking to friends and family out of town, you can come and join us on facebook. become a friend of wjz. there's our facebook page. we just launched this about two weeks ago. we really debuted it over the course of the weekend. and between saturday and sunday, once we announced it, 2,000 people in just 24 hours became friends of wjz. friend us, we'll friend you back. why not. 2010, social networking, the internet and we're always on. and that's the truth. back inside. >> thank you. on the line with us now is the general for the maryland national guard. he's at the headquarters. general? >> good morning. >> good morning to you. i thought we had you on camera. >> i feel like we need to
8:16 am
salute you this morning. >> he can't see us. what's the situation again, talking with the maryland national guard at this point. >> yeah, we currently have operations on in 15 maryland counties. about 150 humvees out there supporting maryland state police and local jurisdictions. >> so tell me about exactly what your detail is today. what are your crews going to be doing? >> primary mission is supporting transportation needs for law enforcement and emergency medical services. >> we understood that one of your hum vies was damaged. >> we had one position that the fire house that had the incident early this morning with the roof collapse in the fire. >> of course anybody hates to lose a piece of equipment, but you have more to service the area. >> fortunate that no one was
8:17 am
injured in the ins did he want. and just give us an idea of your minute-by-minute job there today when you're done with orienter view, tell me about what you do and where to put your troops. >> well, what we will doing do has probably start as a conference call with the governor to kind of get together with the comrades on the cabinet to discuss the situation across maryland. and then i will go into a normal daily schedule where we're focused on the deployment of sold yes, sir airmen overseas. while we have 500 individual involved here in maryland, i currently have 500 still in iraq and afghanistan. and we're continuing to prepare for more deployments over the next 12 to 18 months, so daily business continues. >> it puts what we are dealing with in perspective. the snow, but not a war zone. and let them know that we
8:18 am
haven't forgotten them and won't forget in the snowstorm as well. >> thank you. and we're proud to serve back here in maryland. >> thank you. >> much needed. brigadier general james atkins. she is tracking conditions for us in the first warning weather center. we're going to head over to get the latest on the huge radar picture. >> there is a lot going on with this. and from this side, there's a lot that we're analyzing. that's what we do before the hits here. let's switch it over. step out for a moment there. is interesting here, an eastern parts of the eastern shore over to just along the bay here, notice how all of that is come from you the southeast. and we're going to keep in this in motion. address your atension down to virginia. notice how that's coming in from the west there.
8:19 am
is converging on top of us. so seeing the snow brands become a little bit heavier and it's adding to reduced visibility. and that's because of two different parts of the storm. they haven't merged yet, but they are in the process of that happening. on the radar, the first one, up along the coastline here, the second one, spinning out to the west. and trying to come together as we speak. that will continue to happen over the next couple of hours. as it does, it will swing by to the south and by the time they hit the coastline, they are going to explode. that's why we say this is the beginning to wind. and there's a lot more of that too come. now we have seen this get exthe ended also. blizzard warnings in effect for almost everyone at this point. and that comes out of the wake field national weather service office. we are broken down by a couple of areas here.
8:20 am
this area out of the baltimore area. and garrett county out of the pittsburg office. that's why you see the differences in the blizzard warnings. the one out of the baltimore --c office, extreme western parts of the state, continues longer even though the snow will come to an end. the winds are going to remain high. and through tomorrow morn, that's r, that's when the blizzard warning will continue until. for the eastern shore, this is through midnight tonight. varying times that this warn as good in effect. that's what we have at this point. another thing that we started out telling you last night, we haven't seen any official reports. and we know may be slow in coming. but going in, we had 60.4 inches of snow. 1995 was 62.5-inch tell us for the snowiest ever. we probably already broke that. but we probably already broke that.
8:21 am
the thing is, if not, we probably will by the end of the storm. and this is not the end of winter so there's a good chance that that is going to happen right now. so we're going to keep analyzing this. but for a little bit more, over to tim. we're going to talk about the temperatures. we have been talking about how the snow has come down over the course of the time of the event starting last night. we've been seeing different forms, all is adding to the accumulations. we have seen the sleet and rain that might cut into the accumulations at times. with the temperatures below freeze in most of the area and just at freezing, we're seeing mostly a snow event. 8 in oakland. 21 in comberland. and the warmest spot all day has been ocean city. their factors are different than ours. of course, this err going to
8:22 am
get accumulation down there, maybe a littleless because the temperatures are higher. but the winds are going to be a real factor could be there. only 6 miles per hour there now. but the winds are starting to pick up across the state. 17 at oakland. they're coming in from the west and northwest at 9 miles per hour. northwest wind in d.c. at 20 miles per hour. and double-double its from easton on over. gusts not a factor just yet. we are going to continue to monitor the gust. we expect them to exceed 45 miles per hour or so at times across much of central maryland. the winds are going to shift. they're going to start to low. and as a result of the winds, we've been talking about the blizzard warnings in effect going into effect at 10:00. and these are the winds, 35 to 45 miles per hours winds across much of central maryland. the 95 corridor down. and then 45 miles per hour plus winds down along the shore. head out to western maryland and really from the tip of the
8:23 am
95 corridor and on out to garrett county, maybe less one, but substantial none the less. 25 up to 35 miles per hour. we're going to keep you poisoned this. for now, over to ron for a look at what's going on outside. and we know the conditions have not been as good as now as they were earlier this morning. >> reporter: yeah, we have been hoer here since 3:30 this morning and it was a mix, rain, sleet and snow. and now it's a full blown snow fall and the winds really, really picking up. a friend of ours stopped by from pier point restaurant. how you doing? >> good. >> what are you doing out this morning? >> i need to get my computer out of the restaurant. i just came back from the super bowl, i need to get documents off of there. i walked, but it's not a good idea. >> it isn't. and very few people out this
8:24 am
morning. >> yes, i was surprise that had the coffee place was open. i live over in danton on the square, and somebody had mounded up ten feet of snow on top of my car. and the street is about, literally is three feet many the middle of the street. so four cars on the street. and if we can get out, we're lucky. otherwise w i get to my stuff, i'm going home and going to leave it there. >> thank you for joining us. be safe. >> you too. >> thank you. all right. here's the situation in baltimore city, phase two of the storm. snow emergency plan is going into effect. so the situation is, where do you park the car? the city has stepped up and is is providing free parking at a
8:25 am

8:27 am
>> thank you. you know, i gauge any weather event by the hat that ron is wearing. and i think i'm scare now. >> i think it's going to be pure white at a certain point. i don't know if he has anything heavier. >> but doing a great job. and we're going to continue to check in. for right now, traffic control watching the roads and the decreasing visibility on them. >> hi, we're talking about the decreasing vizzability. you can barely that see that that's 70 on the west side of the beltway. it was a clear shot this morning when we started at 7:00 a.m. and an accident on the west loop inner loop i-70. you can see an accident at 95 at mount road. that's blocking the left lane. and inner loop of the beltway, on the slept right shoulder. accident on 895 southbound. the second accident on 8958 northbound. fire activity in the city

8:29 am
and washington, dc took some early preparations. >> reporter: residents up and down the east coast can't escape winter's wrath. >> just finished shoveling and now i got to shovel again. >> reporter: just days after a monster storm dumped as much as three feet of snow on virginia to new jersey, another wicked system is blanketing the region. even new york city which managed to dodge the last winter blast isn't expected to be so lucky this time around. >> if the storm is what it is, you're going to be stuck on the roads for, who knows how long. >> reporter: across the eastern sea board, the snowplows were out, hundreds of flights kansas led and schools closed before a snow flake even hit the ground. forecasters are calling for nearly two feet of snow. >> we sold through every snow blower that we have. at least 1,000 shovels. >> reporter: they're going to need shovels here in dc too.

neighborhood close here. good morning. >> reporter: good morning everyone. people are starting to come out and about as the snow is whipping in my face. the wind is starting to blow more. as it gets later in the morning, people are starting to walk their dogs and i came across caroline walking her dog here. hi girls. why did you choose to come out? >> it wasn't much of an option. she didn't want to go into the backyard. she likes the snow. so we thought we would venture out. >> and she doesn't like rain because she is actually a rescue from hurricane katrina, but she's okay with the snow? >> i think it's part of the hopped that she likes to dig around and find what might be hidden underneath. >> what are your thoughts about the snow? >> i'm a little over it. luckily my husband is doing all the shoveling.
8:32 am
i thank him for that. but ready for spring. >> okay. thank you so much for joining us. go have your walk. thank you for joining us. >> a lot of people should be walking rather than on the roads. we are told that plows are up and about. just about ten minutes ago, i saw a plow go down. the streets are passable i guess. you could say if you have four wheel drive. we're told that 2700 workers are out on state highways right now. and as far as baltimore city goes, plows are out, but again, they are focusing just on main roads. they tried to get to the secondary roads yesterday, but they have to start from square one today so. city officials are asking people to be patient and stay indoors if you can. if there's a store nearby, reich these people are, head out there. but the blizzard-like central nervous system making it it hard for cars to see even passers by on the street. and the snow banks are so high that i know when people are
8:33 am
going through a road, they can be blocked by the snow bank and cars captain see see them. but people have to get out with fetes. you have to take care of business and then get back inside. >> the dogs like the snow so. they have fun nit. >> yeah, my dogs like it for a short time. >> they make yellow snow. >> they do, they make yellow snow. but there's so much that it just gets covered over. >> that's true. keep it wheel. >> we'll continue to check in. for now, we're going to go over to tim. they are in the first warning weather center tracking the massive storm as it is in our region. >> stay away from the yellow snow. >> don't eat the yellow snow. we have talking about the ( just looking at this. it's such a developing storm. and we've been trying to stay on top of it. and we have been getting a lot of emails.
8:34 am
a lot of people have, are sort of amateur meteorologist and watching the radar online, going to the national weather service site. and stay along wit. they have a lot of questions so. we were going to bring you into what we're going through this time in between the different hits. >> we can show you the radar and give you an idea of what we're looking at. one of the specific views. this is our state view here. and she can give you an idea of the different motion and what you are seeing when you see parts of the storm from the east to the west and parts going from the west to the east. and it's really fascinating how it is coming together from the meteorologist side. we don't like to see the damage. and it's heavy snow and high winds that part is not good but from the pure science of what is going on with the atmosphere, it's fascinating. we are shattering aroused for
8:35 am
all snow fall records possible so far this season. and it doesn't look like it's stopping any time soon. we are locked into this pattern. >> every five-day forecast, we try to get through the current event. but every five-day forecast has another storm on the horizon. and this one has another one. and we won't even talk about that yet. >> winter is not over. and this weather pattern is not over for the amount going on right now, we're going to send it out to marty. he has some updates. >> thank you. good morning everybody. i want to reset a scene here in the outback. when i left the broadcast on saturday during storm number one, wetted 26 inchesover snow and we call that had official here on tv hill. well, yesterday as i was ending the noon news, it was down to 17. some evaporated, some settled. when we came in this morning at
8:36 am
4:30, overnight we had a low, it was creepy between 3:00 3á 30:00 and 4:30 this morning. so figure it was at 17 when i left yesterday. 19 at 4:30. now it's showing about 25. but i think something interesting is happening. i know we are getting about an inch an hour. but that wouldn't account for that much of a dramatic increase. i think we're seeing drifting. what i want to do is reseat this. and we'll be able to over the course course of the next hour see if indeed we're getting any drifting. all right. fine. that's at about 22.5 so. about a 3 drift on the snow stick before we pulled it out. let's take a look at other aqume alligators around the area. 17, 23, do the math. 6inches since 4:00 yesterday
8:37 am
afternoon. eldersburg, 8.5 inches. columbia, 7. almost 5 until northwest baltimore. go ahead and change that display for me, please. thank you. sharpsburg 6. german town, 4.5. millersville, almost 4.5. with the cities, go around the compass, different county, different areas trying to give you an overall look of the innocence the area. smithsburg, 10 inches of snow. well, we've got 6 inches here. we're still looking at another 12 and it's going to be a hard go as the blizzard conditions start to fire up. up the 95 corridor, we could be looking at local amounts of 20
8:38 am
inches plus. half way down the county through southern howard and pg county, that's a sharp drop off, 6 to 12 inches expected. and then mixed precipitation. but now bring in the convince they have an equally dangerous situation as you folks up in cecil county with 20 inches of snow in isolated areas. 45miles per hour gusts possible off-shore. along the baby and eastern and western show, we're going to see gusts of 45 to miles per hour. 25 to 35 miles per hour once you get inland. and we've had this wet, heavy snow. just not a good combo. as a matter of fact, here in the outback, surrounded by a nice natural park-like setting. and every time a gust of wind comes out of the northeast, the trees are creeking and the
8:39 am
branches are starting to sag. so we've been telling you for 24 now, is a storm on a lot of different levels with a lot of different problems associated. so we're not out of the woods yet. i want to change the subject and talk about something. we're streaming this out on wjz.com. and we can register the amount of folks who have come to our website. it was, you new york city a million or so over the weekend. that's also our facebook page. we launched facebook about two weeks ago. 2,000 people joined us between saturday and sunday. since the last mention, the hundred people have friended wjz on facebook. go ahead, friend us, we'll friend you back. for you folks watching, out of town, let's say your coz sin said, hey, go to wjz dome.com, watch the streaming involvement if you're watch from you out of town, we want to know and we ask you to send us an email.
