6:00 pm
frontrunner, protecting that narrow lead. well, it's the final round of the john deere classic. we're at t.p.c. deere run in silvis, illinois, on the illinois-iowa border. tim petrovic now, who currently is one shot back. bobby: also a 4-iron from 202. got a hooking lie and was able to hold it. good-looking shot. bill: look at that final round leaderboard. playing 36 holes today. they came out at 6:45 this morning to start the third round. and so these guys have all had a long day. fortunately, it hasn't been that warm. it's been a beautiful day here in the quad cities.
6:01 pm
here's action from earlier. at the seventh, j.j. henry for birdie. ian: he was really rolling the ball well. greens are perfect, though. no excuses. bill: brett quigley had a nice start, beginning his final round at the 10th. that was well-done. four birdies in his first five holes. but then he cooled off. tim petrovic, second shot at the par 4 eighth. ian: both he and steve stricker are playing great golf today. bill: birdie there. matt jones, the aussie, 29 years old from sidney. former all-america at arizona state has had a good day as well. finished with 69. minus 16. zach johnson finally after eight tries, in contention here at the tournament he calls his fifth major. shooting 66.
6:02 pm
and he waits in the clubhouse at 17 under. so far, it's been a day for steve stricker, who shot 61. in the second round, holed out for eagle there. tied the course record with his 61. tied the record of j.p. hayes set in 2002. but he has not been able to shake petrovic and zach johnson. quigley is two shots back. j.j. at 17. david: tough one to get to the hole. virtually no one has got it all the way up the hill here. that will be par for j.j., who rattled his way up the trees on the left. 6:03 pm
[closed captioning provided by cbs sports division.] bill: that will be disappointing. ian: darron won't be happy with that one. needed to take a little less loft there. greens are soft when you're going uphill. bill: darron stiles. he opened with 64, 64. as we go over to the signature 16th. ian: brandt snedeker wan 8-iron. the lovely rock river down there on the left, about 50 feet below this green. most of the players taking a 9-iron here. hard to get it up to the hole with the 9-iron. he chose the little 8. bill: the rock river there. along about nine of the holes here. again, we want to mention that the level of support by the community here is really
6:04 pm
remarkable. they've raised almost $30 million for charity since 1993 alone in this event. historically the john deere classic has raised more money per capita than any other event on the pga tour, and that says so much about the generosity of the people here in the quad cities and the folks from the john deere company. they should be very proud. and once again, we've got a good finish. ian: exciting finish. bill: unfolding in front of us. three playoffs and four one-shot victories in the nine times the john deere classic has been played here since 2000. another tight one down the stretch. if you're just joining us. at one point when the third round was ending, the fourth round was already under way. they didn't re-pair. there was an eight-way tie for the lead.
6:05 pm
just over 30 feet. bobby: kind of had five written all over it right after the tee shot. ian: tee shot let him down, bobby. bill: there's the tee at the last. j.j. henry. ian: just a 3-wood for j.j. he'll going to rip one down that bunker. bill: 476 yards. ian: best position here is to keep it just down the left half. keep those trees on the right out of play. that's well back, but it's in the fairway. bill: back to 15. bobby: very makeable for petrovic. bill: see if he can close the gap.
6:06 pm
he's played well, too. bobby: putting is normally his strong suit. ian: heast made a couple, but could have made a lot more. his iron play was beautiful. bill: 16. ian: 15 feet for birdie for brandt snedeker. birdied this hole earlier this morning in his third round. they did mow the greens in between third and fourth rounds and they redid the hole locations. cut new holes. we go back to 15. really is a picture, isn't it? course is presented beautifully. bill: what a beautiful day it is. temperatures very comfortable. we can get some wet weather and some heat here, but it's just about perfect.
6:07 pm
got the mississippi close by, the rock river. so you know it can get pretty humid as well. ian: moisture coming from the sky and the ground a lot of times. a lot of humidity. bill: steve stricker. bobby: should break a little right to left. i see it about three inches outside. ian: always tricky when you're putting into or through shad dose. bobby: it is. ian: just takes your focus away. that would have been a nice cushion. bill: can't get any closer than that. snedeker by the way made his putt. he's five under for his rounds. three shots back. steve stricker. oh, so close. six under for his final round.
6:08 pm
a one-shot advantage, trying to win on the pga tour for the second time this year and the fifth time in his career.
6:09 pm
bill: here's the lineup tonight on cbs. "60 minutes" and "big brother." "cold case" and "without a trace." it's all tonight here on cbs, america's most-watched network. on this gorgeous late afternoon, melding into early evening here in the quad cities, let's go back to the picturesque 16th. ian: i love the short par 4's like 13 and short par 3's like 16 here. so often lost in golf course design these days because
6:10 pm
everyone is after the longest course they can make so they tend to lengthen the short 3's and lengthen the short 4's to get total length. bobby: but the player architects designing courses today no differently, like d.a. weibring. ian: exactly right. d.a. has done a great job here. a bend in the rock river there. seeing a lot of people enjoying their jet skis and party boats over the weekend down in there. we see tim petrovic on the tee. bobby: a couple different ways to play an 8-iron here. 157 yards. he can take it right and play a little draw into it. but you can't go left. ian: 8 is plenty of club, so it won't spin that much with an 8. i like what you said, the little holdoff. a little at the flag with a slight cut. bobby: that's the way timmy plays. ian: yeah. beautiful.
6:11 pm
excellent shot. applies the pressure once again inside 10 feet. let's go to 18. bill: j.j. henry. center of the fairway. that's a nice job. too late, but that was a lovely effort. he's three back, 16 under in that group. 16. ian: steve stricker. bobby: also an 8-iron in hand. little breeze just coming up about 10:00 right now. ian: just coming up the river. slightly off the left. beautiful extension.
6:12 pm
bobby: all over it. ian: how about that. absolutely beautiful. two opportunities for birdies there for our leaders. at eight. bill: quigley. still hanging around. ian: swinging well. bill: and that will back up. quigley will have a chance. still looking for his first victory on tour after 12 years. we'll be back with more after this message from your local cbs station.
6:13 pm
bill: well, it's not all about
6:14 pm
golf here in the quad cities this weekend. that's a nice way to see the rock river, ian. ian: i love those standup jet skis. i used to have one of those. good for building up the by accepts -- biceps in the shoulders. not good for golf, though. bill: we have the tournament within a tournament to try to qualify for the british open. matt jones, you can move him out. j.j. henry has a little bit of a chance. really it's petrovic and quigley. the top player not eligible already in the top five will qualify. petrovic and quigley are in the field, by the way, in milwaukee for the event here next week. they would qualify for turnberry. either one of those. right now it's petrovic who is alone in second at 18 under par. he's not thinking about that. he's thinking about winning the tournament and he still has a shot.
6:15 pm
brett quigley, by the way, shot 62 in the third round to get himself up the leaderboard. so if you can combine the rounds for him today, 14 birdies and an eagle. ian: in one day. bill: that's pretty good work. this would be a 15th birdie. get him to 18 under. ian: the last two holes, bill, they could have both quite easily gone in. he's no stranger to playing 36 holes. he often plays 36 with uncle dana quigley. they often go down to bear lakes in the west palm beach area and zip around, play 36. dana sometimes 54 hole miss a day. they're golf addicts in the off-season. bill: we go back to 16. ian: a couple of makeable putts here. darron stiles to go first, just inside 20 feet.
6:16 pm
bobby: and darron missed that little one back at 15 for bogey. ian: disappointing afternoon for darron. a tie for ninth is his best finish on the pga tour. so i was hoping for him so get something a little better than that today at least. played so beautifully thursday and saturday. bobby: he said to me that thursday and saturday were kind of unusual days because every number he had into the greens was a perfect number. ian: i think there's a lot to do with pressure when that comes along. when you're handling the pressure well, it seems like it's always the perfect number. but when you're under pressure, quite often you talk yourself into the fact that it isn't. and tend to second-guess a lot, don't you, bobby, if you're under pressure. if it's 155, when everything is flowing easily, you just hit
6:17 pm
the hard eight. but when you start thinking about it too much -- bobby: and the greens have firmed up and quickened up a little bit, so there's more that goes into it. ian: let's go to 18. j.j., big putt. bill: trying to get it to 17 under. didn't give himself a chance. ian: he'll be disappointed with that leaving it short. never leave those short when you've got a chance. bill: 68. shot 66 earlier today. let's go to 16. big putt again for stricker. ian: can he extend his led? 10 foot, six inches. bobby: ball outside left edge. started a little right. ian: he thought he hit a good putt there. bobby: i think he did. i think he read it differently than me. imagine that. ian: steady round there. two birdies, no bogeys.
6:18 pm
tim petrovic, nine feet, eight inches. pretty normal, pretty average putter. 96th this year. he's normally a little better than that on tour. eighth this week. bobby: he once won the world putting championship though. ian: that's right. just too firm to take the break there. i think he read that a little right-left. but just ripped it through the break. bobby: exactly. it was a good read. ian: i thought one of them would make it. ian: me, too. maybe both. ian: this is where you check your nerves. make sure the routine is exactly the same. don't do anything different. keep your head steady. trust it, release the putter. all of those simple thoughts.
6:19 pm
nine now. brett quigley on the tee. took the driver, trying to get it all the way down there. aggressive play. all right. brett quigley is in the fairway. he needs a birdie at the ninth to get to 18 under par. steve stricker and tim petrovic will walk over to the 17th tee. a birdie opportunity coming up. stay with us. final round of the john deere classic.
6:20 pm
bill: steve stricker lives just 180 miles north of here in madison, wisconsin. played his college golf at the university of illinois. so considers this something of a home tournament for him.
6:21 pm
we've had a little bit of a holdup at 17. watch what happened here with lee janzen. a chop from the bunker. you see the ball didn't get out of the bunker. he's not sure where it ended up. david: i have never seen anything like this. he is looking into the sun. he didn't look. he didn't look at all. and he finally figures out that it's actually, we believe, imbedded underneath the lip there. now you can -- with the aid of two referees here. so he can identify that. meanwhile, back in the fairway, brandt snedeker is just having a liedown in the shadow. that ball, i believe, must have been deemed unplayable.
6:22 pm
and it has rolled a long way away there. i imagine that must have been the second drop. it depends on whether that ball -- i don't know, whether it buried through green or -- certainly he got to place the ball. that was a free drop. ian: it must have been buried under the lip, david. not in the sand, but in the turf. david: with the conditions as soft as they are. what amazed me was he literally didn't know what it was. he was totally confused. when he didn't see the ball, he couldn't figure out where it had gone.
6:23 pm
there was sand involved there. that's something you don't see every day. meanwhile, back in the fairway, snedeker is wondering what the heck is going on up there? and on the tee, the leaders are -- they're thinking, what the heck is going on here? and lee janzen is thinking pretty much the same thing. and he is spending a lot of money that really would have done him and his confidence a world of good, the slump that he's been in the last few years. a really high finish here really would have helped. a very difficult shot from behind the green now.
6:24 pm
>> what's going on up here, bobby? david: asking bobby clampett what's going on up ahead, will is fairly pointless, i would have thought, at the best of times. bobby doesn't have a picture. he only has our description to go by, which has been confusing, i would have thought to say the least. so for this fifth shot from back here, try and clip the top edge. oh, good grief. and that's not even going to come into -- if that interferes with his through swing, he would get a drop. but he may like that. he's going to look for a referee, i believe. we're not quite done here yet. it's been a long day already and this is not making it any shorter.
6:25 pm
just a moment ago. i know how you feel, son. that was a beauty. a yawning cazz. . -- that's a good shot. he was in ninth place before this hole. he will have that for a double bogey seven. that is not an easy putt. it is across the slope, left to right. seven or eight would not help him at all. now on his 18th hole. ian: he's pulled it left. and that was from 222 yards. pretty hard to hit a high fade from that lie from 222. he's going to have a long putt left for birdie. two putts for par. leave him at 17 under in a tie for third with zach johnson.
6:26 pm
so unless tim petrovic does spg silly, i think brett quigley will be playing in milwaukee next week, not at the british open. back at the tee is darron stiles at the right, tim petrovic at the left. david, it's been a long wait. david: a huge wait. it's nice to see someone on the fairway. on 17, everyone's been in the jungle on the left. this for seven. oh, dear. that's a triple bogey. snowman. goes from ninth to just inside the top 20. spent a fortune on number 17.
6:27 pm
actually, i believe he's gone from inside the top 10 to tied for 23rd. that's just painful. brandt snedeker. you know, with a terrific second shot here and a chance for eagle, that would put him at 18 under par. it's going to be left. yeah. and that will be no basket of fruit from there either, that bunker shot. ian: he ate a basket of fruit while he was waiting to play, i think. david: yeah, probably. wow.
6:28 pm
bill: well, as we come down the stretch, let's have ian take a look at the closing holes here at t.p.c. deere run. ian: as they come to the final two holes, anything can happen here. you've got a reachable par 5, rip it down the center of the fairway here, 290, 300 just around the corner. the long hitters can get there in two. for those that drive it in the rough or have tree troubling you must avoid these two bunkers short of the green. you have to be going in here from the short grass. you must control your spin on this green because there's steep runoffs to the right-hand side here and a lot of spin on the soft greens today. back right hole location. they find their way up the hill here to 18. drive it down there to an elevated tee, around 290 to 300, just short of that bunker. avoid the big trees on the right-hand side, because if you need birdie here to win, you must be to the left side of the
6:29 pm
fairway here firing into this back left hole location. the water comes in to play as well. that's in the players' minds. do they bail out a rilt bit to the right or do they go for it? if you need a plea to win here, this is a really good hole location today to be able to go for us. but trust me, that water is in play, difficult to get it up and down from long with a right bunker. david: back on the tee, this is a big tee shot for petrovic. he's act like that's a little left, too. boy. i don't know what it is. there's a lot of fairway up there. the right-hand side of the fairway will kick the ball to the left. ian: yeah, that's right. david: have a look there at this graphic. 290 yards there to a spot where you have a chance to hit
