mr. obama will meet with the italian president before flying by helicopter to the summit site. let's get more from susan roberts in washington. >> reporter: good morning to you. we don't know what was said behind closed doors at the kremlin, but publicly president obama's ambitious i should say summit hopping trip has gotten off to a good start in russia. the president left moscow after a tightly scheduled summit that he characterized as a bid to reset relations that soured in years. >> we think there is an excellent opportunity to put u.s./russian relations on a much stronger foot. >> reporter: he held private meetings with both and signed an agreement to commit both fashions to reduce their arsenals by a third. he calls that leading by example. >> once you do that then you've got an international community that is collectively focused on the issue so that when we

approach north korea or iran, it is as a united front. >> reporter: north korea continues to issue threats and test-fire missiles and cbs white house correspondent chip reid asked the president about that. >> reporter: do you worry about the possibility of war with north korea? how close are we? >> i don't think that any war is imminent with north korea. i think they understand that they would be overwhelmed in a serious military conflict with the united states. >> reporter: international concern over north korea and iran's nuclear ambitions will also be on the agenda at the g-8 summit. but the main focus there will be the global economic recession. leftist protesters have clashed with security forces if rome but the g-8 will be meeting in italy's central mountains hard hit by an earthquake in the past. many are still unable to return to their homes.

l'aquila is still experiencing aftershocks and later today mr. obama will join other g-8 leaders for a tour of the region. michelle. >> susan, thanks. turning now to michael jackson, the official farewell by family, friends and fans is over. though for his most devoted followers, the mourning goes on. also continuing this morning is the investigation into his death and many other questions remain, as well. manuel gallegus has the latest. manny, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, michelle. with the michael jackson spectacle history there's still unanswered questions about his death, his children and still don't know where he will be buried. michael jackson's fine resting place is still a mystery. his gold casket was taken to an undisclosed location following tuesday's emotional memorial service in los angeles. ♪ we are the children we are the children ♪ >> reporter: 0,000 people packed the staples center to bid a final farewell to the icon. among them an all-star list of

musicians, athletes and other celebrities. >> the more i think and talk about michael jackson, i feel the king of pop is not big enough for him. i think he is simply the greatest entertainer that ever lived. >> reporter: on the same day as his memorial, the consider rower in released his death certificate. no cause is listed. still waiting for the results of toxicology reports that could take a few more weeks. >> ever since i was born, daddy has been the best father you could ever imagine. >> reporter: one of the most moving moments of yesterday's tribute came when jackson's 11-year-old daughter paris took the stage. >> and i just want to say i love him. so much. >> reporter: it's still unclear who will have permanent custody of jackson's three kids. his mother katherine is currently taking care of them but there is a chance ex-wife

debbie rowe will try to fight for custody for the older children. a guardian hearing is scheduled for monday. after the memorial yesterday jackson's family went to a private reception but it's unclear what happened to his casket and so, michelle jermaine said publicly, jackson's brother that he would like his brother eventually buried at neverland but we just don't know. >> you mentioned the hearing on monday for the two oldest children. what about the custody battle for the youngest. what's going to happen there. >> reporter: we got to see what happens with monday. so far nobody has come for as a surrogate for prince michael, the 7-year-old, ets the youngest. we don't know who the mother is and that hasn't become a public situation yet. >> all right, manuel gallegus in los angeles, thank you. millions of michael jackson fans around the world and elsewhere in the u.s. were also able to remember him and say their farewells. >> reporter: from churches -- >> i just want to be around

quarter for corporate earnings. investors will be closely watching the dow component for signs the global economy is rebounding from the shock of the financial crisis. the dow jones industrial average does begin the day down 161 points. the nasdaq starts off 41. the battle for domination between microsoft and google is getting nasty. google is upping the ante announcing this morning that it's developing a pc operating system based on its chrome browser. the new operating system named google chrome os will be an open source operating system initially geared toward netbooks that will be in the second half of next year. but it could be an uphill battle for google. microsoft already has the dominant windows operating system which controls more than 90% of the world's computers. there's one benefit to the recession. you aren't wasting as much time in traffic. a texas transportation institute study says for the first time in its 25-year history rush hour

and president obama has arrived in italy for the g-8 summit after meeting with russian leaders in moscow. in italy, the president and other world leaders will discuss what to do next to help ease the global economic slump. cbs senior white house correspondent bill plante is traveling with the president and joins us now from the summit site in l'aquila, italy. what's on the agenda for today? >> reporter: good morning, michelle. well, global warming, the climate change issue, the global economy, of course, but global warm something probably the paige issue for this president. you know, the house of representatives at home has passed a bill. he'd like to get one through the senate. he could use some support here from these nations but don't look for that because india and china, two nations that use a lot of energy, don't want to move until the bigger nations like the u.s. move first. and in any case these annual meetings are well known for more talk than action. the president would also like to get some uniformity on iran's

nuclear program. he could probably do that. >> bill, why is it supposed to be held there but an island off italy? >> reporter: yeah, it sure was. on a very luxurious island off the coast of sardine ya but prime minister silvio berlusconi moved it here after an earthquake devastated thousands of people and ruined a lot of homes so he moved it here in support. locals are critical enmany think the summit will be more of a distraction an a help and they don't necessarily think this is a great thing. meanwhile, we're here. they're still having aftershocks although we haven't felt any yet. >> italian prime minister berlusconi is a little bit of hot water at home. do you think any of his problems will affect the g-8 summit? >> reporter: well, i tell you, he is to say the least a colorful figure. prime minister berlusconi is in

the middle of a divorce, the tabloids are feasting on him with pictures of him with young women, but, you know, he never met a camera he didn't like and i'm sure he'll be all over the summit and probably won't affect the outcome but there's been criticism the planning hasn't been great and the u.s. has had to step in so we'll see. michelle? >> what's the view of president obama's trip up to now? >> reporter: well, the obama people feel very good about their reaction -- their interactions rather with the russian leadership and they feel they were able to present what they believe is in the u.s. national interest to russia and have russia tell them what they think without any theatrics or histrionics and think they're off to a good start in dealing with the president of power medvedev and the prime minister putin. >> all right, bill plante is traveling with the president. we really appreciate it, bill. thank you. and comedian al franken is now officially a u.s. senator.
