here at the enoch pratt free library. it was a chance to say goodbye. and some people missed their lunch result of -- as a result of it. but they say they would do it again. ♪ [ music ] >> reporter: it was a part of history they couldn't miss. this simulcast was a chance to say goodbye to the king of pop, and dozens of enoch pratt library visitors. >> people don't have a chance to show their remorse. and i think this is one chance they get. >> reporter: they watch from the library atrium. and a three-hour time difference. some brought their children. >> reporter: others saw the simulcast as a chance to remember the past and jackson's music. >> it's his whole lifespan. it just intrigues me. he was more than just what everyone sees him on the screen and entertaining in the entertainment world. he was a human being.

>> reporter: the library says part of the reason it decided to simulcast the memorial service is the increase in michael michael jackson's popularity since his death. all of his books and c ds have been checked out here at the library. this one is the last one left. >> every time something like this happens, people tend to want to learn more frvment books to cds, everything. we're happy they're coming to us. >> reporter: some watching from enoch pratt say jackson's music had a message for them. but today, they have a message for the king of pop. >> it's an enjoyable ride. >> reporter: and some folks we talked to today said they enjoyed the music and they would go out and purchase michael jackson music to add to their personal collection. the library says it continues to be out of some of those things like the books and cds, they will try to accommodate everyone. back to you on tv hill. >> thank you very much, gigi. and wjz 13 is always on.

for extra video and pictures of michael jackson, along with an opportunity to e-mail your memories of the king of pop, log onto wjz.com. be sure to tune in tonight at 10:00. it is a special "48 hours, michael jackson: the last dance." thal be immediately-- that the immediately be followed by eyewitness news at 11:00. we want to update you on breaking news. an emergency landing at bwi. captain mike perry with the latest. >> reporter: yeah, around 5:15 this evening. southwest airlines jet 69 was departing runway 28 at bwi thurgood marshall airport. it hit about 40 birds. now, it appears that these birds were small, like starlings. but immediately after the bird impact, the pilot called the tower and requested an emergency landing. apparently not sure what the damage was or if there was any to the airplane, but it startled the captain of the

airplane rather seriously. very short time, a bwi personnel handed them off to approach control, who advised everyone of the emergency. they basically stopped all of the traffic at the airportux while -- airport, while the flight was placed on a very long downwind. we know there were 169 people on board this southwest 737. apparently there were no injuries. that flight was destined for providence, rhode island. we know that people were off- loaded at the terminal and taken to another jet. the jet that struck the birds is being inspected for damage by southwest airlines personnel. for a brief period of the traffic along runway 28 at bwi was severely affected as they cleaned up the birds on the runway. >> an exciting afternoon. captain mike perry, thank you very much. new information within the last hour, about the mysterious deaths about two baltimore county teenagers.

their bodies were found near the light rail tracks in lutherville. weijia jiang explains, mta investigators now believe they know what happened. weijia? >> reporter: yeah, we have a lot of new information that just came in, all from video surveillance. the mta says both teens were struck from behind and then run over and the operator did not see them. the mta says most likely the boys thought they would be able to spot a train coming. but a technical error changed the direction the trains normally travel. >> the whole thing doesn't make sense. >> reporter: it's a story that only has one certainty. the devastating ending. >> it's a terrible tragedy for the family. >> reporter: two 17-year-olds, connor peterson and kyle wenkman lost their lives. >> that's a stretch of our track, where it has a greater speed. so a person's reaction time would be a lot less with a train that doesn't have the

loud, locomotive engine that runs on runs on electricity. and that factors in. >> reporter: investigators focused on the underceacialg of two light -- undercarriage of two light rail trains but stopped short of identifying either one as striking the boys. >> you have to understand, these boys were distraught. >> reporter: family members left sunday at 2:00 on their bikes. police are not saying whether they recovered the bikes. >> something went wrong. join if someone pushed them or maybe they were already hurt before the train hit them. >> why were there two kids on the tracks. >> i feel there was foul play. >> reporter: the boys lived together, like stepbrothers. family members say they also believe their deaths were not accidental. with so many unanswered questions, the mta is not ruling that possibility in or out. >> if you were in the area

surrounding the tracks. we need help in identifying what circumstances led up to those boys getting on the tracks. >> reporter: police are waiting for official autopsy results. but breaking news showed that both teens were struck from behind, and run over while they were walking on these tracks. we're live in lutherville. weijia jiang, wjz eyewitness news. >> the family is having two separate funerals. connor peterson's viewings are 2:00 to 4:00, thursday and then again 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. the funeral will be friday at 10:00 a.m. kyle's arrangements have not yet been finalized. there are stunning new developments in the investigation into steve mcnair. police say now he was threatened shortly before his death. >> reporter: police have been very cautious to label this a murder-suicide. now, tonight, we know why this

isn't such a clear-cut case. >> reporter: soon before steve mcnair and his girlfriend were found shot to death inside his national -- nashville condominium, we now know he was bar hopping. a woman claims he slipped her the date rape drug and threatened to get her boyfriend to kill the quarterback. police are looking into it. >> we will be questioning persons who were there, the management and the staffs. that is on the list to do. >> reporter: residents claim the relationship was healthy, saying mcnair took her on vacations, and promised he would leave his wife for the waitress. if that plan wasn't true or broken, however, it could be a possible motive with the double killings with mcnair shot four times and the 20-year-old dead with a single bullet to the head. >> she clearly could have done this to herself. >> and police confirm cassini bought a gun found near her body.

>> they continue to conduct ballistics and gunshot rizz due test -- residue testing. that testing is not complete. and the classification of miscassini's death -- miss cassini's death will not be identified until tests are done and results are back. >> reporter: police have also expressed one other major concern in this investigation remember they want to know why mcnair's friends who discovered the body, waited more than 30 minutes to call 911. they say so far, there is no evidence of tampering with the body for evidence, however. >> mcnair's wife has not publicly commented on the status of their match. baltimore county police have released the out. -- identity of the young man who drowned. sally has the latest. >> reporter: 19-year-old sedrick hart appeared to have a seizure and drown. sky eye chopper 13 was over the scene. his body was found.

he was rushed to johns hopkins bay view medical center in cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead at the hospital. full autopsy is being conducted on hart. denise, back to you. >> police say hart was from dundalk. surprising news from out of baltimore county tonight. towson catholic school is closing its doors. eyewitness news is live now. kelly mcpherson with more on the school closing. vic, the school is closing. and the reason why, they say, is simply money. a $650,000 deficit for the high school means they will not be opening this fall. there were 244 students epirolled in may. that number is -- enrolled in may. that number is down. there is the shortage in the money. they're blaming the economy, as well as a record number of low enrollment for catholic schools. >> 81 students. and you have your sole source

of income is tuition. and you have $160,000 in tuition that you didn't even collect from last year. those things all conspired to a perfect storm. and they feel like this is an unprecedented situation for them. they've never experienced this kind of decline in enrollment. >> reporter: the decision was to shut down. it was made by the parish. but the diocese said it didn't have the money either to help the school. 20 people need to be relocated. and as for the students, more than 160 families will be scrambling now, as they learn today. and we're only six weeks away. but the diocese says they will get help from other schools if that's what needs to happen to get the kids back in school in time for the mall. well, our string of incredible july evenings continues.

live look outside now. there's no humidity, which make its very pleasant out there. we are live with first warning coverage. there's humidity. but you can't feel it. that's the key. the low dew points. dry air. makes it very, very comfortable this time of year. right now, we've got a front coming through the region. west winds at 10. temperatures, 85 to the north. that's where all of the action is across new england up this way. showers and thunderstorms all over the place. particularly around boston, harford. portland, albany. hail and gusty winds. as cool air moves in and reacts with the sunshine this time of year. that's why they get in that type of activity. for us, however, nothing like that. in fact, looks like we'll stay dry, maybe until maybe saturday night. humidity will come back for the weekend. you're going to feel that and perhaps a few pop-up showers by then. until then, nice, july weather continues. vic? the time numbers are in tonight on the fourth of july holiday weekend in ocean city.

monitoring and cut off his. the tragedy is that a young mother who should have the who should have the joy of sending her kindergartener off to school has to deal with a hospital setting. >> reporter: margaret burns would not speak about the details in this case, but says the system as a hole -- whole was fading. >> our hands are tied behind our back, with laws that are arcar -- archaic. >> reporter: sources say davis had been in custody since 2008. and had been arrested four times since then. the department spokeswoman said they were looking for him. she declined an on camera interview. >> we should not assume that all of this is survived by some

evil child. over and over again. cases of juvenile on juvenile crime has sparked outrage. including a stabbing caught on tape in 2008. and a teenager caught on cell phone in 2006. a studied that year shows the typical juvenile charged with murder had been arrested at least four times. more than half were on probation. >> reporter: the ability for the system to address the level of violence that we see for prosecutors just doesn't exist. >> mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. the commissioner has called on parents to take greater responsibility. some of the state's horse racing entities. they are suing the maryland jockey club and several other organizations. the $20 million lawsuit claims the jockey club and other facilities interfered with the simulcast.
