admitted to the hospital in serious to critical condition. the children were taken in good condition. taken to children's hospital not too far away. the children and the driver all were treated and released. and what about the worse? the horse was not hurt. as i go back to you, you may recall back in february, aldermen ed burke introduced a proposed ordinance that would ban these carriages altogether similar to what happened in new york city. he's got the support of the mayor but not much action has been taken since then. >> police are looking for two men who who shot and a killed a 16- year-old boy and critically injured his father in broad daylight on chicago's northwest side. witnesses say 16-year-old adam lara and his father, 49-year-old year old uriel, had just

finished having lunch at a restaurant near diversey and kennth at about 3:30. surveillance camera video show the pair got into an argument with two men in the parking lot outside the restaurant just before they drove off. gun shots were heard seconds later. >> it was like firecrackers. i said to buy and a few minutes later i heard screaming. i went over and asked are you ok? >>police say the teen was shot once in the head and his father was shot once the back. uriel lara was taken in critical condition to illinois masonic hospital. police say the shooting was most likely gang-related. it appears there will be another break in the fighting between israel and hamas. the israeli cabinet voted to accept a proposal from egypt to declare a cease-fire, after an ongoing exchange of rocket fire that has already killed more than 180 people in gaza. the proposal would also open border crossings, once the security situation in gaza stabilizes. president obama cheered the

development. >> further escalation benefits no one. work and a continued to do what we can to return to the 2010 ceasefire. we are encouraged that egypt has made a proposal to accomplish this goal. >>the cease-fire still needs the approval of hamas. western leaders hope it will lead to high-level talks toward a *permanent peace in the region. another cell phone video shows what was going on at montrose beach, before police officers were attacked. this video shows several fights at the beach, in different spots, on sunday. a large crowd had gathered for a beach party concert. several police officers responded, but that escalated when they got a call about a man with a gun. during that search, some people in the crowd threw bottles, rocks, and other objects at officers. four officers suffered minor injuries. ten people were arrested. >> that will receive additional attention as will other parks. >>out of the ten people

arrested, two amen are charged with aggravated battery to a police officer. a 17 year old boy is charged with criminal property damage. taking a look at the *other top stories this morning. murder charges have been filed against a reputed gang member in the shooting death of a photographer in rogers park. prosecutors say eric vaughn was driving in the 13-hundred block of west devon saturday, when a passenger said he saw a rival gang member ... and opened fire with a gun provided by vaughn. wil lewis was killed. police are still looking for the gunman and another passenger. the family of 8-year-old gizzell ford is suing the department of children and family services, for wrongful death. d-f-c-s placed gizzell with her father andre, and grandmother helen ford. police say her body was found last summer, beaten and strangled. the family says d-c-f-s failed to recognize that the girl was in an abusive home. an arrest warrant has been issued for rapper chief keef fish after he failed to show up in court for a child support case. cook county prosecutors say the south side rapper, whose real name is keith cozart, owes more than ten thousand dollars in back child support for his 17- month old daughter.

cozart has had a number of run- ins with law enforcement over the past couple of years. he was also arrested for drug possession and speeding. police officers, citizens and city officials of gary gathered to pay their final respects to a fallen police officer. jeffrey westerfield was laid to rest yesterday... nine days after he was shot to death in his squad car. 12 hundred people attended westerfield's funeral. most of them, like westerfield, were first responders. >> we are family that they never wanted to be a part of, the survivors family. >> we are here for you now and forever. we grieve as a family we will he'll as a family and we moved forward as a family. >>westerfield died on his 47-th birthday. he and his fiancee had planned to marry next month. he leaves behind five children. a man who was mistakenly trapped inside the cook county jail for more than 30 hours, is now suing the county. farad polk was visiting his son at the jail over the fourth of july weekend, when he was given directions to the visiting area. but, he entered an unoccupied

room for super maximum-security prisoners instead. the door closed behind him and polk wasn't found for 32 hours, when he set off the fire sprinklers. he says he was handcuffed and questioned before being released. >> your her won't believe it. the just kept coming. >> consciously disregarded. >>polk needed stitches for a cut on his finger. he is suing for emotional trauma. a jail spokeswoman says officials are very sorry, and are focused on figuring out why it happened. today's the deadline for car owners in chicago to get a new city sticker. you can get one at the city clerk's office downtown or at one of its satellite offices. you'll need your renewal form or your state vehicle registration i-d card. if you buy one after today, you'll face a sixty dollar late fee. police will begin giving out tickets for invalid stickers tomorrow. taste of chicago attendance was down this year. one good reason is that it was

closed on saturday because of heavy rain. about "one point one" million people showed up on the other four days. that's about 400-thousand fewer than last year. more than three and a half million people went in 2006 and 2007, when the taste was ten days long. customs officials at the los angeles international airport intercepted some very interesting cargo.. 67 live snails were found in two picnic baskets back on july first. they arrived on a flight from nigeria. paperwork indicated they were intended for human consumption. the giant african snails are one of the world's largest land snails and can live as long as 10 years and grow up to eight inches long. they can carry parasites harmful to humans. they usually eat fruits and vegetables but if they can't find any of those, they are known to eat the paint and stucco off houses. >> that sounds delicious. >> that's pretty sick this early in the morning. let's take a

prosecutors in boston have released a new video of accused boston marathon bomber dzhokhar tsarnaev taken the morning after the bombing. this video reportedly shows tsarnaev walking down a hallway

with his friend, azamat tazhayakov on the way to a gym. the video was presented yesterday as evidence in tazhayakov's trial. he's accused of taking evidence from tsarnaev's dorm room and throwing it away. his lawyer says he never spoke with tsarnaev about the marathon blasts. one of the suspects in the attack on the u-s diplomatic compound in benghazi, has been found dead. c-n-n reports faraj al-shibli was last seen alive three days ago when he was detained by a local militia. his body was found in a libyan town yesterday, but no one is saying what happened to him. al-shibli had ties to the al- qaeda group that u-s officials say stormed the benghazi compound in 2012. four americans were killed. a fast-growing wildfire in south-central oregon has forced more than one-hundred residents from their homes. the fire is burning on private land in a rural area with lots of trees and brush. it spread to nearly 3-thousand acres in the first day. no injuries have been reported, and the cause has yet to be determined.

it comes as firefighters in northern california are battling a more than 4-thousand acre wildfire, believed to be linked to an illegal marijuana growing operation. there is life, somewhere out there in the universe. and nasa says it's closer than ever before, to finding it. top astronomers and other scientists gathered for a panel discussion, and said telescope evidence suggests that practically every star in the milky way has at least one planet circling it. and a *new telescope, set to come online in four years, will determine whether any of those planets has an atmosphere capable of supporting life, either now or in the past. what you think? >> it's the first. before leave now, in about 1 million years we will get there. will find it. hopefully they have a faster way back. 57 degrees right now back here on earth. the very cool temperatures as we go to the day. wind of the west at 10 mi..

were hurt when an s-u-v collided with a horse-drawn carriage on the near north side. patrick elwood is at northwestern memorial hospital with the latest. >> the driver of the car taken to hospital the four children in the car that collided with the carriage were hospitalized as well. the incident happened around 11:30 p.m. last night at the corner of grand. the driver of the car collided with the horse drawn carriage while the driver of the carriage was taken here, 25 year-old initially brought in in serious-critical condition. children were taken up the street to the children's hospital. bottom line is, all were treated and released. the horse? the course we are told was not hurt. you may recall back in february, alderman edward burke introduced a

proposed ordinance that would ban horse-drawn carriages here in chicago similar to what happened out in new york city. it did receive the support of the mayor initially but not much action has been taken on the matter. from northwestern hospital. back to you. >> chicago teachers union president karen lewis is taking the first step toward running for mayor. a new poll for the sun-times concluded that lewis would defeat mayor emanuel by 9 percentage points if the election were today. lewis now concedes, she has already set up an unofficial exploratory committee. and she wants a representative in every chicago neighborhood. the calculus of a lewis candidacy could change dramatically, if cook county board president toni preckwinkle runs for mayor. the same poll gives her a *24 - percent lead over emanuel. taking a look at the *other top stories this morning. a 16-year-old boy was killed and his father critically injured in a shooting on

security situation in gaza stabilizes. congress is just a few weeks from another financial deadline. this one will take money away from highway construction projects, if a new deal is not passed. andrew spencer has more. >> of the multibillion-dollar trust which helps fund state transportation projects like road and bridge repair is once again running out of money. the obama administration says as soon as august 1st, a lack in funding could affect transportation project. >> this week we need the solution. there will continue to urge republican lawmakers to not block it. >> lawmakers are not sitting idle. house and senate are hammering out the details of the temporary extension. whether that deal gets done before the end of the month is a question. >> dozens of projects across the country hundreds of thousands of jobs are in jeopardy. >> discussing their version of the bill monday evening, a house committee hopes to put something for that would easily pass both the house and senate.

alliance. a new study found out how much a new study finds how much money correction is costing taxpayers. researchers found that illinois is among the ten most corrupt states in the country. they say corruption is costing states, one-thousand 308- dollars per person. the study found that most illegal deals are tied to large construction projects, police, wages, and borrowing. states that are more corrupt wind up spending more on those items, which takes money away from other necessities. the man who lost both of his legs in the boston marathon bombings has a big reason to celebrate this morning. jeff bauman and his fiance' welcomed a baby girl, nora gail, on sunday. bauman posted this picture of their new arrival on facebook. a photo of bauman being rushed to an ambulance following the blast became a lasting image of the attacks in april 2013. and, there's more good news for bauman. a movie based on his story is in the works. hollywood movie house "lionsgate" says it has signed a deal to develop a movie based

embarrassment for the veterans administration. the v-a's inspector general confirms that thousands of vets who were no longer entitled to disability payments, got them anyway, because the v-a didn't bother to review their eligibility. a backlog in processing claims is getting the blame... and that backlog is still there. because of the backlog, vets got >> there are veterans of waiting on particular decisions on initial claims which we are paying, 72 percent of everybody in the appeals process is getting resources from the va for any number of medical

issues. >> because of the backlog, that scott benefits without providing medical evidence of continuing disability. it's already cost taxpayers 230 million dollars... it it could cost another 370 million in the next five years if it isn't fixed. back to being a full-duty soldier. bergdahl returned to active duty after six weeks of therapy and counseling in texas. this comes after he was held captive by the taliban for five years. bergdahl is now working in an office on the base and sharing a barracks with two other soldiers. it's not clear if bergdahl will face a court martial for deserting his post in afghanistan. investigators still have to interview him first. former president george w. bush was back in chicago for another knee surgery. he had partial knee replacement surgery on his right leg, at rush university, in may. last weekend, he was there again for his left knee. he was able to fly back to dallas yesterday morning. u.s. stocks end higher; dow adds 112 points.

citigroup, one of america's largest banks, will pay 7 billion dollars in penalties, for offering bad mortgages. the company's settlement averts a federal civil suit that could have been even more expensive. some of the money will allow homeowners to get relief on their mortgages. the states will get a little money... illinois gets 84 million dollars. but most of the money will go to the federal government. home depot is taking its first major step into the 3-d printer market. under a pilot program, it began selling markerbot printers in a dozen of its stores in california, illinois and new york on monday. the printers are used to make 3- d plastic objects. each store that sells them has a kiosk staffed by makerbot workers to demonstrate how they work, and print small keepsakes for customers. going to the gym often is not only good for the body but it's great for the brain too. that's according to a new study by researchers at michigan state university who studied college students and the habit of "gyming". they found that students who were members of a gym or participated in sports during their first two years of
