metro trains. we first told you about it. now what is being done. this is chicago's very own wgn news at 9:00. a suspicious package, a suitcase wrapped at an l squad with a bomb squad on the scene. a very tense night, especially for this guy on the north side. >> our top stories seen around the country. six lanes of traffic all trains and everything else stopped at the blue line addison station. we are there. finally got the all clear. . >> reporter: almost the all clear. we are standing right new just east of the l stop as well as east of the kennedy expressway. and right here it's filled with neighborhoods, homes and alleys that overlook the express wais

as well as the station. to ta --;ñ?ñ? expressway as wes the station. tonight a suspicious package. at some point someone called#mñt in around 6:40 in the evening.a? when we arrived to the scene, all lanes of lanes of traffic@ñ? were stopped on the kennedy in both directions and thereñ?ñ? be line had been halted. not a sole at the addison stop. not a sole until 7:30 p.m. when a man cautiously approached the briefcase. backed away. he returned minutes later, took his equipment and backed away a second time leading the briefcase just where it was. the next time he came back, he had opened it.5qñ?ñ? just four trips back to the scene, the man fromñ?ñ?ñ? the bb squad was in nothing more than plain clothes. no suit of armor. he took pictures, packed up the once suspiciousykñ?ñ? briefcased took it with him.

by then lanes of traffic were backed up. the worst news is the kennedy was shut down for more than an hour. no blue line traffic either. and the latest from the cpa is that the blue line traffic is running again. and by passing the addison stop which is right here behind me. we just saw our first l train. shuttles are in service to get people from the addison area where they still need to go. but, again, the trains while they're running are not stopping here at addison. as for what was actually inside that briefcase, we don't know. none of the experts or authorities are telling us at this time. we suspect someone two or from o'hare left their briefcase and caused a whole lot of trouble. >> all that for that. julie ann drew reporting from the blue line. new developments tonight in the race for the mayor of chicago as we try to work to keep you up-to-date on who is in and who is out. tom negovan is on it tonight.

of political capital. i'm ready, he says, to move forward and become mayor of the city of chicago. but here is the thing. this isn't the only coalition. the@9ñ?ñ?ñ? city's black vote ht with a separatejqñ?ñ? group of business leaders now supporting? former senator carol moseley brawn and the reverend james ñññ meeks. the meeks campaign issuing this statement tonight, it seems as though the coalition reverses course weekly. so i like our chances that senator meeks will be the consensus candidate next week. >> how are you? >> leaving the other candidates declared and otherwise campaigning today a little unsure of exactly who they're up against. >> it certainly does take the definition of coalition in a new direction, so i don't know;lñ?ñt ñ?ñn drñ?ñ?ñconsensus of any kind. >> everybody has responsibility to offer the people of the city of chicago?ñ?ñ not only a choict a future.

>> they persuaded the committee to raise the fines of possession of sulfuric acid. if the full council approves, fines would jump from a maximum of 200 to $1,500. the fbi says it has rescued children forced into sex slavery right here in chicago. a nationwide prostitution ring with roots here in chicago led to the arrests of hundreds. it's called operation cross-country five. here in chicago 45 have been arrested. three miners were rescued. they were allegedly being held captive in three different locations, downers grove, lansing and hazel crest. authorities are attempting to contact their families. a follow-up to a story we mentioned on friday. air pollution in metro stations and inside some of the train cars the senator is now getting involved calling the epa. i talked to senator durbin during the wgn evening news at 5:00 today. they were asking for investigations at the rail hubs of union station.

what is most alarming about the investigation is the air inside the passenger cars which can contain levels, it said, of diesel up to 75 times outside. they are are fact asking for funds in mass transit systems. >> the first thing we need is a thorough investigation. let's find out how serious this problem is and where it's concentrated. michael hawthorne has pointed us in the right direction and given us fair warning. >> metra is holding a meeting on this problem tomorrow. jobs and law enforcement at stake in several suburbs. there is more at stake than work. it's about safety. and speaking of, don't think of taking a box of ink car trijs to yourehñ?ñ?ñ mom's plain. the newest ban. recalling breakfast again. eggs. a great weather warmup again. tom skilling points out the best day of the week in his forecast.

days. okay. you're fired. prospect heights leaders canned deficit. dan, iszeñ?ñ?ñ that about how i? >> reporter: that's right, mark. and they went up to the alderman and the mayor and thanked them for their unanimous votes. six officially out of a job. i spoke to several of them at the meeting tonight and they say that tonight's vote means that this community of about 17,000 people is now dangerously underserved. >> i don't know how they're going to command the streets. this is not enough police officers. >> reporter: this officer is the most senior of the@sñ?ñ?ñ sx officers who has been laid off serving in the prospect heights police department for almost 14 years. he says tonight's decision by the mayor and the city council means the police department will now have to be strictly reactionary instead of working to prevent crime. they say the city council should have found a way to keep the

officers on duty. >> instead of trying to govern, they keep trying to cut things off. and when it comes down to the is what everybody really counts on. >> reporter: prospect heights city leaders sy the last thing they wanted to do was to lay off the officers, but there is not enough money to keep them. the city imposed 30 furlough days for all employees. the police union challenged that saying it was illegal to make officers take furlough days. the police union won so the city claimed they had no choice but to make the layoffs. >> nobody on the city council disputes the fact they would like to fully fund the police department. that is not possible. >> reporter: alderman we spoke with tonight say the police union is partly to blame. >> the city's hands are tied and we have to lay off these six employees unfortunately. i really wish that the union had been worked with the city and had a better longer range of vision and worked with the city on the furloughs so that everybody could keep their job,

especially now during the holidays. >> reporter: the layoffs are effective immedy . it leaves the city with eight patrol officers, four sergeants and two commanders. now, the city of prospect heights isn't alone tonight in terms of laying off police officers who have also learned that the naperville police department has laid off seven police officers. they're facing some tough economic times right now facing a $5 million budget deficit. the city manager says it's possible they'll have to lay off even more officers and potentially some firefighters as well. mark and micah. >> all right, dab. reporting from prospect heights. thanks. a new security measures on u.s. planes is has a ban on toner and ink car trijs. they discovered bombs shipped inside printers and packages from yemen. now all cartridges or shipments are now banned on all u.s. flights. it has now been expanded to somalia. hundreds of thousands of eggs sold in illinois and seven

other states being recalled due to salmonella threats again. bacteria discovered at the kal main foods in ohio. the company now recalling roughly 300,000 eggs. nobody has gotten sick yet. calmain food bought the eggs from ohio eggs and it was linked to salmonella outbreaks that made 1600 people sick. well, have you ever fallen asleep or nodded off while driving? the triple a foundation for traffic safety says 41 percent of drivers have fallen asleep or dozed off behind the wheel. the report also says drowsy driving played a roll in 17% of fatal crashes. teenagers 16 years and old and men much more likely to fall asleep while driving. coming up, a world war ii relic with quite a story. the plane fished out of lake

in tonight's medical watch, sex and some surprising findings for teens. girls are having unprotected sex more often than boys. they wanted to find out the relationship between early sex education, sexual activity and safe sex. when young people are taught about sex and the consequences of unprotected sex, they're more likely to delay their first sexual experience and use contraception. 15-19-year olds have the greatest number of sexually transmitted disease, but overall young people are waiting longer to have their first sexual encounter. aspirin relief pain may stop production. male babies were more likely to be born with undescended testicles. a study documents the link between aspirin and ibuprofen and male reproductive disorders. researchers say across the world sperm counts are day and they suspect painkillers and pregnancy may be to blame.

jordan gazardo and steve tool, how can you lose. >> how can you lose. >> that's right. but thank you very much. that was really nice. and i'll tell you what else is really nice is this weather. >> isn't it, though. >> owe, yes. >> this is amazing. it really is. we continue marveling at this. we had highs in the low 70s today. those temperatures are more than 20 degrees above normal. they're more typical of what you would see back in early october than early november. so this is like the weather of a month ago. and it continues this trend of great autumn weather. look at this, 95% of our possible sun. do you know this is the second cloudiest month of the year as we watch the sun sinking into the western horizon. we had 77% of our possible sun this year and we sure had it today with a high temperature officially at 67. but look at some of these temperatures off our weather bug network across the area. 72 buffalo grove. itasca hit 71 today. dekalb 70 and same at nathaniel green school in town.

it's down to 50, though, at o'hare. the air is dry so it warms up fast but it cools off fast. and this is kind of interesting. a little bit of an easterly component to the south wind. that means the wind will be slicing in through the lake to our north shores. there will be a little bit of a lake cooling there but low 70s are expected back in the south and west suburbs tomorrow. 58 at midway airport. there are dew points so it gives you an idea the air is dry when you have 30-degree dew points and we have a ways to go in terms of temperatures dropping. this is madison, new york and brooklyn. and the point we're making here is we're somehow managing to sandwich ourselves in the nicest weather in the country. there is quite a storm blowing out in the east and another out to the west. the mountains east of fresno have had up to 14 inches of snow, and there's big snows falling in the tetans. even southern alaska wound up with the first snowstorm today

in the anchorage area. but we continue in the sunshine here as we will the next couple of days. there are frost advisories in alabama and north florida tonight. and these are winter weather advisories for snow which our rpm model shows you. you'll notice the dark blue areas, each of the areas maximizes snow. dips indicating a punch of cool air and when that happens out west, the flow turns southerly here and we warm up. it's bonus time. so we have at least three to four more days of the mild weather to go the rest of the work week. 76 in rampant city and here is the reality check. that is the cool temperatures that has it down to 20. some of the cool air we have a big cooloff in the next two weeks. 95% see measurable snow from this point forward and about 67% of those years we'll see in the next month here about an inch or

more of snow. about a third of the year we'll see three inches or more. but we don't worry about that right away. we had lake-effect snow over the weekend. it melted in indiana. and tonight temperatures are seven degrees warmer than they were 24 hours ago as the southeast winds blow and the humidity stands at 27%. you'll see how the southerly flow that keeps us warm through the end of the week gives way to a couple of these storm producing dips. one system will move through southern midwest and could send some rain up here late friday or saturday. then the flow begins to buckle again, and look at this trough here. some of the models are developing quite an active autumn storm is that would come up here with cool rains, maybe even close to the rain-snow line by tuesday of next week and some really chilly air expected to dump in behind that. but for the moment even the low temperatures which is what you're seeing on this map aren't a dom

abominable. they're occurring in the low elevations out west and yet we stay high and dry here in chicago. look at all of the action out on either side of us. our forecast is for clear and mild weather tonight. mild by early november standards. low temperature 40 inland ranging to the upper 30s on chicago's shoreline. 45 at o'hare will be our low for tonight. then tomorrow beautiful day again. mostly sunny. unseasonably warm. temperatures low 60s. waukegan, kenosha and zion to 68 at o'hare and low 70s south and west suburbs. so kankakee, joliet, aurora, fair and mild. low 40s inland. 50 lakeshore. 45 at o'hare.

thousands of acres in 1986 and began restoring it. >> we move the seed around. >> bill klineman moved in to manage the land. >> this is the prairie state. this is what we inherited as we came to this place. it's home to over 700 native plants. over 180 bird species use the area. emersing herself in these surroundings and picking plants to tell the prairie's story and create something of function and beauty for the organic art exhibit. she has a couple of ideas. >> those things i'm thinking about doing don't really require fresh plants but more dry plants. i'm not sure how they'll react to light and how much color will stay. but i think a dry plant shape should stay in shape for a while. >> i'm going to go get it. >> milkweed seeds may be the mill until you see them through the eye of an artist. >> look at the shine on that.
