it's 4:30. 62 degrees on this wednesday, october 14th. the cool weather moving in with temperatures rising into the upper 60s, sun and clouds coming up today. good morning. i am chris wragge. >> and i am mary calvi. we will have traffic and weather on the 2s in a moment. but first, the vacant hospital building where a teenage boy fell to his death last week will be demolished. >> janelle burrell has the story from staten island this morning. >> reporter: well, chris, the staten island president says that the building could come down as early as this week. this building has been empty since 1979. and even before marcos

castillo's death, people have been asking why it is still standing here. five days after the 16-year-old tumbled seven stories to his death inside of an elevator shaft in the abandoned staten island hospital and after his grieving father demanded answers -- >> i want the truth. >> reporter: a permit has been issued for the building's demolition. >> why they wait till something happen to take it out? they should take it out before. >> reporter: tuesday cbs 2 news asked the staten island borough president that very question, why were he and his friends able to access the building? >> we pushed to have this eyesore become something that's a positive for the community. >> reporter: but there was no security? >> yeah that's a tragedy. >> reporter: and he says ownership of the structure was in legal limbo, stalling any action. officials with the city's department of buildings say the abandoned site is owned by

former nba and reality star lamar odom is currently in critical condition after being found unconscious in a brothel. the sheriff's department responded to a call at the love ranch. the owner spoke to cbs radio. >> they're saying it's not looking good and that he was taking some viagra supplements. >> like the actual viagra? >> no, like a herbal viagra. >> odom was going to be air lifted to vegas but he was too tall for the available helicopter so he was driven by ambulance to a local hospital. odom grew up in queens. we will have more in the next half hour. a suspect in a fatal shooting outside a manhattan nightclub is in custody this morning. he left the station house last night after his arrest in brooklyn. he is accused of opening fire outside the club early monday,

two other women were wounded. he posted a picture of himself on social media hours after she died. they say he was aiming for the club bouncers who threw him out. hillary rodham clinton, bernie sanders and three other candidates clashed over gun, email. >> reporter: it may be the biggest slug fest las vegas has seen since the fight in the spring but on the issue that's preoccupied hillary rodham clinton's campaign for months, her email, surprise support from her closest competitor. >> let me say something that may not be great politic, and that is that the american people are sick and tired of hearing about your [ bleep ] emails. me too. >> enough of the emails. >> thank you bernie. >> reporter: discussion also

he is accused of putting together a bottle of flammable liquid and throwing it on to a sidewalk aafter getting into an argument with two men. >> he got into one of the guys that own the carts. they were sitting down and then the guys, he was like, homeless or something, but he was already drunk. he told one to get off the chair and smacked him. the guys, the drunk guy smacked the guy sit ising down. and the guy sitting down threw the coffee at his face. >> no one was hurt in the attack. the king of beer, two major brewers are joining forces. plus this -- >> the only thing that's going to speed it up is if someone gets hurt. and that's not acceptable. >> parents outraged over what they say is a lack of crossing guards. and are you stressing over your child's home work? >> the square roots of -- what? here's the deal, let's put

yesterday we hit 72. and 66 lunchtime. hitting the high, 68 in the afternoon. and then the mix of sun and cloud, breezy conditions as well. 60 as we wrap things up tonight. and you can see the skies right now, clear for much of the area. north and west, there's more cloud cover. and the models are hinting that those clouds will fill in, roll in and race by this afternoon. in fact, could see a little suspended moisture in sullivan county. the odds for a shower are low. it would just be north and west if you saw one of those. and you get a sense of that, it's going to be a breezy day today. and that will serve to reenforce the chill. thursday night is bright. and by friday afternoon, that's when we see a better chance for a shower. and more coverage of that rain. so remember that, friday afternoon, and then we will get rid of that and we dry the out this weekend. but it is going to be cold. not so much today. 68 with the stray shower

apartments. delays back to jerome avenue. and alternate side of the street parking rules are in effect city-wide. and remember, be safe, don't text and drive. over to you. >> thank you. if you're just waking up, a quick look at the stories making headlines this morning. officials in florida say there are unknown number of victims after last night's crash of a small plane into a mobile home park. two of the homes caught fire. no word yet on how many people were aboard the aircraft. a dutch investigation blames a russian-made surface to air missile for bringing down a malaysia airlines jet over ukraine in july 2014. this shows how the missile detonated just outside the cockpit. all 298 people onboard killed. russian officials call the report, quote, flawed. in wisconsin, a jury has ordered a gun shop to pay nearly $6 million to two milwaukee police officers wounded by a gun bought at the store. the gun was sold to a so-called straw buyer who bought the weapon for someone who could not legally buy guns.

years of appeals are likely. stock futures are down after the markets lost ground. points. and nasdaq dropped by 42. the s&p lost 13. twitter employees have gotten the message. off. they are slashing about 8% of the global work force in an effort to turn around finances. 336 workers. twitter has struggled to attract new users and impress wall street. it comes during the co- founder's second week as the permanent ceo. they have reached a deal to buy sab miller. the new company would include a wide variety of popular brands including miller and budweiser, representing over 30% of the global beer mark e. the deal needs to be approved by regulators. parents in lower manhattan say a crossing guard shortage is putting their children at risk.

they say they have pleaded for more crossing guards and something needs to be done before someone gets hurt. >> reporter: how badly do we need a crossing guard? >> badly. >> reporter: parents at this school in lower manhattan say there's a dangerous crossing right outside. speeding cars heading to and from the brooklyn bridge and small children walking, a bad combination. >> the we have crossing guards, they'll be able to stop the traffic and people will naturally see them and it will make it easier and more peaceful for us to get to school and not worry about the children's safety. >> reporter: it's a frightening race for parents and students crossing west street near battery park city too. many take the pedestrian walkway to avoid danger. >> we need more crossing guards. all along the area, there are so many building, so many children, the parks. it's really surprising that i only see one right outside the school over there. >> reporter: a parent helped

have signed urging the city to add more crossing guard, especially at spruce street where there is no agent at all. >> the only thing it's going to speed it up is if someone gets hurt and that's not acceptable. >> reporter: the nypd says they have money in the budget to add crossing guards here but they say they haven't found qualified applicants to fill the positions. >> they say they can't find the right people. >> reporter: is that a good enough reason? >> i wouldn't think so, no. the unemployment rate is still fairly high. >> it's up to the people who review the application process make the hires but this is -- could be a life or death situation. >> reporter: the nypd says it doesn't have a time line on whether to hire crossing guards. parents say they hope they don't come too late. cbs 2 news. well the youth and education committee met with the police last night to discuss the crossing guard need. it is 4:49. coming up, something you might

approaching 3rd avenue. we will update you. alternate side of the street parking rules are in effect city-wide. and remember, be safe, don't text and drive. chris and mary, back to you. >> thank you. and now to a developing story in nevada where former nba star lamar odom is reportedly in critical condition. >> he was rushed to the hospital after being found unconscious in a brothel. andrea grymes has more live from madison square garden this morning. >> reporter: well, chris and mary, lamar odom was on the knicks roster for a few months last year but he is now said to be in critical condition after that trip to a brothel in nevada. he came florida south jamaica queen, becoming famous on the basketball court for the lakers and clippers and off the court for his marriage to reality star khloe kardashian. and now lamar odom is fighting to stay alive in a las vegas hospital. investigators say he was found

a nevada brothel. >> yeah, passed out. 911 rolled him over on the left side. awful looking stuff came out of him. and the paramedics got him to the hospital. >> reporter: he says he arrived on saturday and was not drinking much. the owner says he put odom in his home attached to the ranch. the local sheriff reports they got the call around 3:15 yesterday afternoon asking for an ambulance. he says the girls found him passed out. >> they're saying it's not looking good and that he was taking some viagra supplements. >> viagra, like the actual viagra? >> no, like a herbal viagra. all around there. so we don't think it was that. hopefully it wasn't. i'm concerned about lamar. and we hope that he's okay. >> reporter: he was taken to the local hospital and then transferred by ambulance to sunrise hospital in vegas. the sheriff says he was going to be the taken by helicopter

but they had to scrap those he's 6'10". off the court, odom made headlines for his marriage and divorce that was the finalized this summer from kardashian. kardashian is completely inconsolable. they had split after he issues and cheated. but she has been open about her ongoing concerns for odom. authorities have not said exactly what led to odom's hospitalization but kardashian is reportedly at his bedside. reporting live outside madison square garden, andrea grymes, cbs 2 news. >> thank you. to campaign 2016, the first democratic presidential debate took place last night in las vegas. bernie sanders was asked if a democratic socialist could win a national election. and hillary rodham clinton was asked about her shifting views. >> i did say when i was

and now police say the shooting may have been related to an argument over a drag race. his wake will be held today. and his funeral will be held tomorrow. the abandoned staten island building where a teen fell to his death could begin demolition as early as today. >> cbs 2 news demanded answer and got action. janelle burrell is live in staten island this morning. >> reporter: yeah, chris, we are just outside of the abandoned hospital where steps from the entrance to this facility, you can see some of the candles and flowers that friends and family have left in tribute to marcos castillo who will be buried tomorrow. demolition on the building could begin as early as today. and that permit approved last night after years of complaints since the building was first abandoned back in 1979. five days after 16-year-old marcos castillo tumbled seven

normal by about four degrees. and record high of 84 set back in 1920. sun's up at 7:06. breezy and bright at 6:17 when we say so long to the sun. a mix of sun and clouds for the day today. clouds well to west. north and west, you see the little system. that's radar picking up on moisture overhead. and dew points are be lower today with the west wind. the odds of a stray shower unlikely and low. definitely a touch cooler today. and with the wind, you will feel it. so a jacket and the shade in the city will feel good. and probably a little refreshing for the kids after school. and tomorrow we're in good shape. not as windy with the proximity of the high closer to us and it should be brighter from start to fish. mostly sunny in the mid-60s for thursday. and friday here comes the front. so a shower or two. a better bet on friday and even still, it's not a wash out. and not talking about a significant rain maker on
