legs or weakness of the muscles of the face, for example, they need to seek medical attention immediately. >> reporter: dr. brandwell is the head of neurology at children's hospital. she's treating the three children who have displayed acute muscle weakness. it's showing up as an abnormality in a certain location on the spinal chord. meanwhile, there have been more cases of enterovirus d68 in the community, five diagnosed recently at c.h.o. none of those case led to muscle weakness. children who start with the flu-like respiratory systems have the enterovirus d68 have also developed muscle weakness. that is why the cdc is asking all hospitals across the country to report these cases. >> so we have patients that are presenting with new onset spinal cord systems. one of the infects of interest

is enterovirus d68 but to date, the paetschs that we've reported today from c.h.o.p. have not been confirmed to have enterovirus d68 infection. >> reporter: three cases may not seem like a lot but in a year, they would normally only see maybe four to eight cases. to see three cases in the last two months here is quite a bit something they're concerned about. one initial test of one of the children being treated here has shown they are exposed to an enterovirus. it's to early to tell if any of these children were exposed to enterovirus d68. live at children's hospital, lu ann cahn, nbc 10 news. the enterovirus d68 is in 43 states including pennsylvania, new jersey and delaware. there are more than 100 other

types of enteroviruses. as news of this surfaces, concerns are spreading as well. >> definitely. nbc 10's christine madella is live at a south jersey urgent care center today. >> a lot of folks are worried, even staff members are worried. we just stepped out of this advanced care center, advanced urgent care. it's a walk-in clinic. we were told, a doctor told us he was treating a man for enterovirus d-68. the cases are more common in children but in this case the patient is a man in his 40s. he said he caught the virus while baby sitting his two grand kids in virginia. >> between i got down there, they were both sick, colds, flu, that kind of thing. they were miserable for the first four das. by the fourth day i started to feel under the weather, kind of like the flu. then i got back up here.

and my granddaughter wasn't getting any better. so she took her to urgent care. 11 months. they diagnosed her -- >> reporter: we're told the grand kids were diagnosed with enterovirus d68. i just asked the doctor here on city avenue how he confirmed the case in paul parker. the doctor said he was notified that the grand kids in virginia tested positive for enterovirus 68 so then he did a test on parker. those test results were sent to a lab and the lab then sent the results to the centers for disease control. the doctor said that when the lab heard back from the cdc, the lab sent a confirmation to him here at the clinic. we're working to get more information about this case here at the clinic. i'm working on that story for nbc 10 news at 5:00. reporting live, christine madella, nbc 10 news. right now on our website, we have a resource guide about this child virus and what parents need to know, including

symptoms, health tips to keep your children virus-free. all of that is waiting for you right now on nbc10.com. and now to the other big health threat with ties to our area. >> the ebola outbreak, an nbc news photographer covering the ebola spread in liberia has tested positive for the virus. he's being flown back to the u.s. for treatment. the 33-year-old has been working with nbc's dr. nancy snyderman who has ties to the university of pennsylvania. dr. snyderman and the ref of her news crew are in quarantine for 21 days. here's more on dr. nancy snyderman and her philadelphia connection. in addition to being nbc news chief medical editor, nancy snyderman is a doctor at penn medicine in university city. she's a head and neck surgery specialist who consults penn doctors. she does not see patients at penn. hazmat crews converged on an apartment in dallas this afternoon. they're decontaminating the home

where thomas eric duncan stayed before he was diagnosed with ebola. the family living there had been confined to the apartment for several days under armed guard. they've now been moved to another location. health officials are also reaching out to at least 100 others who may have had contact with duncan. local efforts to prevent ebola from spreading to our area. >> matt delucia has been investigating the situation at health departments and hospitals in our region. matt, what precautions are they taking? >> reporter: whether it's local emts or hospitals, they are taking directses from washington, particularly the cdc and this guidance, a checklist to make sure ebola doesn't spread. >> obviously this is much more of a fear and a very deadly situation potentially. we want to make sure we don't let our guard down. >> reporter: this is delaware county's senior medical adviser. on the heels of ebola surfacing in the u.s., he sent this letter to the six hospitals in the county urging them to protect

be, detect and respond. >> how do you deal with something you haven't seen her locally before? >> obviously we have to go by medical history. we get our information from the center for disease control that tells us what to look for and how to deal with it. >> that guidance includes a checklist of more than three dozen items, including a new question that emergency personnel are being trained to ask. >> we want to know where that patient has been, where that individual has been, if anyone has travelled to west africa over the past 21 days or past month. >> reporter: that starts on the way to the hospital. >> you treat them the same way. with the goal being that we're there trying to protect ourselves and treat the patient an then advising the hospital en route that this potential may be there. so they're ready to receive the patient. >> reporter: i spoke with montgomery county, they say they sent guidance to hospitals there and the state of delaware says

west. ahead of that, that's where we have the line of showers. this will be moving in later tonight. it won't be affecting your friday evening. we will see rain moving in late tonight and through the overnight hours, also starting off your weekend. we have the clouds around, the thicker clouds are back off to our west. those will move in later tonight and then we'll see that rain coming in as well. so here is future weather as the cold front gets closer, our cloud cover increases. as we go through your friday evening it looks pretty good up until 7:00, 8:00, still mainly dry. by 9:00 p.m., the rain will be back off to our west around harrisburg. as we get closer to the 11:00 p.m. hour, that's when we see more rain moving in from the west. coming up, we'll take a look at the timing of that and how cold it will get behind the rain. as the showers and potential storms in some cases make their way into the nbc 10 viewing area, be sure to follow me on twitter this evening, also get updates with the free nbc 10 weather app tonight and all weekend long. be sure to get my updated

weekend forecast tonight on nbc 10 news at 11:00. today marks three weeks in the mountain mault for accused cop killer eric frein. search teams have been looking for the outdoor survivalist for 21 days now. it was back on september 12th that investigators say frein ambushed two troopers at the pennsylvania state barracks in blooming grove, pike county, killing one and wounding the other. since then, the search focused primarily in the home around the area of his parents in c canadensis in monroe county. there have even been possible frein sightings but he continues to elude them. nbc 10 was there as state police gave an update on their search. investigators told us they are confident frein is stilt in the area. over the past 24 hours, police have drained the pond where frein's jeep was found shortly after the shootings. both police and the public have

reported three unconfirmed sightings of frein just this week. >> because we continue to push frein and to seize the items he needs to survive, we believe he will be forced to search for food and shelter in other locations. law enforcement will continue to search vacant cabins and homes in and around our search area as likely locations for him to obtain what he needs. >> police believe frein may be using dumpsters at restaurants and grocery stores to find food. they're asking owners to look for anything suspicious and check their surveillance video. skyforce 10 is over the scene of a deadly accident in chester county. west whiteland township police tell us one person was killed, two others hurt. the crash happened this afternoon at south whitford and commerce drive in exton. an elevator problems leaves people stranded in a center city philadelphia building. it happened inside of old strawbridge's building. the elevator simply stopped and

the doors would not open. one person was taken to the hospital. we have new information tonight in the death of a homeless man in camden county. back in 2013. 21-year-old daniel jurczyk has admitted to stabbing the victim. he died in june and his death has since been ruled a homicide. 20 minutes of nonstop news continues with this. the search for a group of women who pulled off a high-stakes heist. >> their target, a local restaurant. nbc 10 jersey shore bureau reporter ted greenberg is live in folsom, atlantic county. >> reporter: keith and denise, the owner of this chinese restaurant tells me she and her husband work six days a week and haven't taking a vacation in 17 years. but police say it took a group of women less than 30 minutes to steal a ton of cash here and

they want your help to track them down. >> i opened my door. i said, aaah! it's not there. >> reporter: her purse and $17,000 in cash gone after crystal vi says this group of five women, seen on surveillance video pulled 0 a heist at her chinese restaurant on the black horse pike in folsom, atlantic county. >> really angry. >> reporter: she says the women came in around 2:30 saturday afternoon and placed a lengthy takeout order. one she says called her away from the counter. >> she said i have a surprise party for my sister. i don't want her to know. she gave me a hug. i didn't know her. >> reporter: with the owner distracted, the video shows another woman taking vi's purse from behind the counter. the group was soon gone after driving away in this tan toyota ciena mini van. >> don't think they're sweet because they're older but they're not sweet. >> reporter: new jersey state

police say the same group tried to pull off a similar theft at a nearby nail salon but without success. >> it could be a network of people just working this corridor and what they do, they just look for places where they may see a high turnover rate. >> reporter: vi says the cash was supposed to pay for three months of food for the restaurant. >> all gone. i have no way to get the money. >> reporter: even so, vi is offering a $1,000 reward to help track down those women. she is thankful to her loyal customers who have been donating their own money to help replace some of what was stolen. live in folsom, i'm ted greenberg, nbc 10 news. now to the casino crisis. a judge denies request by trump entertainment resorts to be relieved of its pension obligations for workers at the taj mahal. the bankruptcy judge ruled the company had not shown it would suffer immediate harm if it continued to make pension

to drive home their point. >> reporter: keith and denise, that's right. those life-size silhouettes make you think about the people who have been hurt and their families, hurt by domestic violence. the numbers in new jersey are staggering. in 2012 alone, there were more than 65,000 cases of domestic violence. and 18 of them proving to be fatal, one of those right here in burlington county. that visual came behind these closed doors here at burlington county college an hour or so ago. we could feel the pain and hear the voices of surviving loved ones that more must be done to stop this overwhelming up demic. those life-size wisilhouettes stood for ones they loved. >> ramos is working with lawmakers to establish a statewide domestic violence registry. he says his sister's killer and exboyfriend fell through the cracks.

>> the background check came back clean. she had a full sense of security. two weeks later she died. he killed her two weeks later. when he got arrested for the crime, we found out he served 9 1/2 years for a 20-year sentence for trying to kill the mother of his daughter years earlier here in new jersey. all it took for him to hide his past was to lie about his age. >> reporter: new jersey has also allocated an extra $2 million into the state budget to go towards those domestic violence programs, one of them providence house who helps women and their children who suffer. also the sideline the witness project today is asking all new jerseyians statewide to please wear purple, this on october 23rd and that will promote peace in all of our households. live in mt. holly this afternoon, cydney long, nbc 10 news. the holiest day of the jewish calendar is about to

begin, yom kippur starts at sun down. in a ritual dating back thousands of years, jewish people confess their sins to god and ask forgiveness. yom kippur is the conclusion of the high holy day. they begin with the new year celebration of rosh hashanah. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist sheena parveen. >> well, we're seeing a nice day across the area. no rain right now but we will have rain moving in as we go through tonight. not really until late tonight. if you have the friday evening plans, everything looks dry. at about 10:00, 11:00, showers move in. to start off the weekend, the rain will still be here. it will be an overnight event. we'll have rain around and possibly a couple thunderstorms but it won't be all day saturday. it will clear out pretty quickly, especially through the afternoon. then we have colder temperatures setting in. so far sunday morning, and even sunday afternoon, it will be quite a bit colder across the

area. we'll show you the forecast in just a second. here's a live look out at philadelphia center city here. still seeing the overcast skies. we've had clouds the majority of the day. we certainly have seen our share of sunshine. 71 outside. pretty comfortable through the rest of the area, temperatures north and west at about the upper 60s. allentown coming in at 73, 68 pottstown, 67 in westchester. south jersey and delaware, temperatures comfortable. the upper 60s, closer to the shore at 66 degrees in atlantic city. and stone harbor. as we go into tonight, these temperatures won't be as chilly as maybe it was a couple mornings ago. the clouds will keep us a little bit milder and locally we still do have the clouds around. as you wake up you'll notice the rain. the closest rain is moving into western p.a. this is mainly on the lighter side. as we go overnight, we could have a few pockets of heavy rain. it's a big weather system. it's a cold front. once that cold front leaves the

area, we'll get the cooler temperatures behind it. ahead of the rain, temperatures in the 80s, not too far to our south in north carolina. as we go to the west, this is the air in place behind the cold front and that's the air that will move in as we go, especially into sunday morning. future weather, we do stay dry tonight. the clouds and the rain move in late overnight tonight. the cold front swings through in the morning. by 11:00 we could be cleared out of most of the rain. cooler temperatures start to move in as we go into saturday night especially and even into sunday morning. that's when we see some of the coldest temperatures waking up to the 30s, areas north and west possibly. as far as the eagles are concerned for sunday, cooler, 58 degrees by 1:00 p.m. by 4:00 p.m., temperatures in the low 60s. that will be the high on sunday. for tonight, clouds increase, rain mainly after 10:00 p.m. temperatures in the mid to upper 50s. then tomorrow we'll see morning rain, chance of a thunderstorm possibly with afternoon clearing. it will be a breezy day, too, temperatures only reaching about

70 degrees. then as we go into sunday, temperatures low 60s. but that's a quick blast of cold air. next week we're back into the 70s. >> another headache for car owners. and a new black eye for a major automaker. we'll tell you more about the recalls and find out if you're affected. also, calls of concern. the phone rings and you pick up. today, the warning about the person on the other end of that line and what they're trying to get from you. plus this -- >> so i am definitely in support of that right to give the address. >> commencement controversy. two days before this convicted philly cop killer delivers an address to students, nbc 10 is talking to those who support it and those who are outraged. and the local attraction that's becoming a fall flop. the popular event that draws thousands and generates lots of money for our area gets put on hold.

competitors suffer a little bit longer for the pumpkin chunkin'. organizers say they can't get it organized in time. the pumpkin chunkin' is 0 moving from wheatley farms in bridgeville to the dover international speedway. the new dates are november 6th to november 8th. >> but there's good news this weekend for car lovers in the first state. the delaware auto show is under way in wilmington. it's the first show in the region to show case the 2015 models. the show runs from 10:00 to 6:00 at night through sunday. >> those cars are too small for your taste, a monster truck jam is taking place in south philly. the show features freestyle competition between those jie jan tick monster trucks. we caught some of the drivers practicing earlier today. tough gig, right? it's amazing how they transform the wells fargo center.

philadelphia cop killer. jamaul will deliver a recorded graduation address. abu jamaul received a degree from goddard college in 1996. the 60-year-old is serving life for the 1981 murder of philadelphia police officer daniel faulkner. as with most issues surrounding abu jamaul, people are deeply divided. >> some approve, some are outraged. deanna durante got reaction today from the cop's widow. >> she has not only harsh words for the college that's allowing this speech but for the students who dieded to pick the convicted cop killer to speak. >> shame on them. they could have another commencement speaker that would give these students wisdom before they start out in life.

>> maureen faulkner has never shied away from voicing her opinion of convicted cop killer abu jamaul. she went from young bride to young widow when abu jamaul shot the fatal shot. >> having a radical, someone who hates america to speak to them is so wrong. >> reporter: supporters of jamaul, more than 30 years after his conviction and multiple appeals upholding that conviction say he's innocent. >> this has has been in prison for 33 years. the case against him has not been establish. this is a man whose voice has much to give. in many ways he is our nelson mandela. >> reporter: jamal has released other tape recorded speeches. his books and speeches are used in their classrooms, some tell me. >> mummia did not start this

controversy. >> reporter: it's been tweeted, murder is wrong, free speech is right. >> i did ask supporters of mumia abu jamal to supply a copfy of the speech. they said she would not until after the speech. reporting live from the digital operations center, deanna durante, nbc 10 news. here's some of the news making headlines on nbc 10 news at 4:00. the medical adviser for delaware county sent a letter to the county's six hospitals with guidelines on how to handle a potential case of ebola. those guidelines include a checklist of more than three dozen items, including asking if a parent has travelled to west africa. pennsylvania state police say they found food belonging to eric frein, the man suspected of murdering a state trooper. they believe frein is starting to break into cabins or trash

bins to survive. they've asked cabin and business owners to keep an eye out for anything suspicious. students at a local school are helping to fight hunger. classmates in grades six through eight packaged 20,000 meals for stop hunger now. it's an international hunger relief agency. after theboxed up, they work with international partners to ship and distribute them to the needy around the world. >> it makes me feel special and that i'm making a change in our community and globally. >> last month, there was a walk--a-thon held to race money for this endeavor. we have cued that unmistakable music that means one thing. the friday night high school blitz on nbc 10. you're familiar with this at this point. here's our spotlight game of the week. it's what you voted for.

gm announced two more recalls, the cadillac srx and the saab. the chevy spark mini car has a rust issue that could cause the hood of the car to suddenly open while driving. here's a look at the gm recalls for 2014. the automaker has issued 71 recalls this year. they affect almost 30 million cars. when we hear post traumatic stress disorder we think of war and other traumatic events. now a new study is linking ptsd to mini strokes. according to the study, there could be mental damage that makes a patient more susceptible to ptsd. about five out of every 1,000 people will have a mini stroke in their lifetime. most owners treat their pets like members of the family. a new study may have found out why. researchers gave mris to a small group of mothers.

fight against isis. australian planes have conducted their first operational noncombat flights over iraq. it's all part of the u.s.-led coalition. prime minister tony abbott says australia is sending two more fighter jets to the region. canada is also poised to launch air strikes against islamic state militants pending approval by that nation's conservative parliament. on the ground isis continues an offensive against the kurdish town along syria's border with turkey. u.s. air strikes have not stopped the assaults from islamic state militants. the continued fighting forced some 160,000 syrians to flee across the border to turkey. meanwhile, turkey's parliament is he couraged to launch military incursions into syria and iraq. the new poll shows that half of the public thinks there's high risk of future terrorist

attacks on american soil. the survey reports the public is split on whether they approve that the president is handling the threat from isis. clashes in hong kong during pro-democracy protests. they move to evict activists who have been occupying the city streets. some hong kong residents have complained the demonstrations are threatening their livelihoods. they are calling for them to consolidate and gather in the central business district. prime minister david cameron becomes the first world leader to meet with afghanistan's new leader. cameron pledged support for newly sworn in president ashraf ghani. cameron insisted there was no

prospect of britain going back to fight in afghanistan. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist sheena parveen. >> a nice way to end the week. temperatures very comfortable outside. but we have seen our fair share of cloud cover today. it's all ahead of some rain. the rain won't be here until late tonight. if you really have the friday night plans, most of your night will be dry. we'll see rain moving in mainly after 11:00 p.m. the rain and possibly thunderstorm would be here saturday morning. we have a chance for a thunderstorm across the area but it will be here to start off your weekend, too. more cold air moving in as we go into sunday. so especially sunday morning, some areas behind the rain could be waking up to temperatures in the 30s. here's a live look outside right now. looking at the art museum, we have overcast conditions in philadelphia. the temperatures are still cool outside, too, especially north and west of philadelphia through parts of montgomery and chester counties, pottstown at 68 degrees, westchester 68.

allentown 72 degrees, 71 in philadelphia. for south jersey and delaware, mainly the mid to upper 60s and mid-60s for atlantic city and stone harbor. closer to the shore, the temperatures are cooler. we're all dealing with a mix of sun and cloud today. the cloud cover is giving way to thicker cloud cover. it's approaching central p.a. this will be in the area mainly after 11:00 p.m. tonight. it's all part of a big weather system. this is a cold front. behind it, we'll have colder air moving in as we go into saturday night and especially on sunday. here is future weather, going through the rest of your evening. it looks good if you have evening plans. if you'll be out later tonight, 11:00 p.m., rain starts approaching to the west. getting closer to philadelphia, overnight the rain continues. by 7:00 in the morning, we could have areas of heavier rain

today a warning before you pick up that ringing telephone. >> someone on the other end of the line could have bad intentions. nbc 10 delaware bureau reporter tim furlong live in wilmington this afternoon. >> you've learn of a problem that's spreading across the first state. >> reporter: i know at my house we've gotten a couple of weird calls and lots of other delaware viewers have, too. one lady e-mailed us about it. the phone and computer scammers are out there and want your information and money. >> they called on my house line. >> reporter: nikki was shocked by the boldness of the scam caller she called the federal trade commission and e-mailed us at nbc 10. a woman who knew her name called

her house. she told nikki she needed to gain remote access to her computer to fix a problem. >> she was strong armed, this is an emergency and we need you to do this. they kept pushing me to open that computer. i did not do that. >> reporter: nikki is pretty sharp. she didn't give the woman access to her computer and all the personal information it holds. these phone scams are getting more common. >> these calls are not limited to delaware. this is happening nationwide. >> reporter: greg strong leads the delaware attorney general and consumer protection team. some callers say they're with the irs and demand you pay a fine immediately over the phone. greg has all sorts of advice for us but the most simple snnuggeto remember, is this one. when in doubt, hang up. >> reporter: this guy, greg, had a bunch of tips. if the caller says they're sending is the police right over, that's probably a scam. they want you to pay a fine over

nbc 10 breaking news. right now on nbc 10 news at 5:00, we are tracking breaking news from children's hospital of philadelphia. three children are inside the hospital with muscle weakness in their limbs. >> nbc 10's lu ann cahn is at children's hospital. what are doctors telling you? >> reporter: we're talking about an acute muscle weakness. and the three children with this condition who are being treated here also show an abnormality on

their spinal cord. three may not sound like a lot but children's hospital says in a year they might see cases that are similar to this maybe four to eight cases. so for them to see three in a couple of months is a lot. >> when we see that, we pay close attention. we look for something that's common in the community. >> reporter: dr. brenda bandwell is head of neurology at children's hospital in philadelphia. she says the three children who are experiencing acute muscle weakness are showing the same specific abnormality on their spinal cord. it's different, unique and it's a concern. what's causing it, they're testing to see if it's linked to the enterovirus d68. it's a virus that normally gives children flu-like respiratory problems. >> when this grouping of patients with acute muscle weakness began t b
