another case. virginia state police say the arrest of 32-year-old jesse matthew jr. gave them a forensic link to follow in the death of morgan harrington. the 20-year-old disappeared while at a concert at uva five years ago. >> her remains were found a few months later. matthew was charged in connection with the disappearance of uva student hannah graham. jason culver has the breaking details. >> reporter: it's been five years of not knowing for jill harrington, wondering what happened to her daughter morgan. >> i am so pleased that that has happened but it doesn't change a lot for us.ç in some ways, you know, our bedroom is still empty upstairs. >> reporter: in 2009, someone abducted and killed morgan outside a concert in charlottesville. her remains were found but no one was ever charge. today police confirmed morgan's case is linked to the disappearance of hannah graham. >> however this unfolds, i know where my girl is. she's in a box in the living

>> do you know him? >> i do know him, wonderful young person. very smart from an excellent family. >> david culver reporting. police say they have what they believe is a new sighting of fugitive sniper eric frein. researchers, trackers, canine crews spent much of the afternoon near a campsite in barrett county. they found a checkbook with eric frein's name on it and ammo for a .308 caliber rifle. >> we have granola bars by a tree that have not been open. >> file it in. file it in and move towards him. >> police say the canine unit's lost the trail by midafternoon but kept searching near frein's alleged campsite. he's wanted for the deadly ambush of two pennsylvania state troopers earlier this month. a tragic accident claimed

the life of a worker at the philadelphia zoo this morning. >> nbc 10's jim rosenfield is live in the digital operations center with the latest. >> jacqueline and keith, authorities are telling us the work was working on a heavy duty golf cart when it fell off the jack and landed on top of him. when the employee didn't show up to a regular 10:00 a.m. meeting, his boss sent someone over to the garage to check on him and that's when they found him pinned under the vehicle. this accident happening this morning in a garage that's not open to the public. the 59-year-old victim was taken to the hospital but he later died. his name's not being released right now but a spokesperson-to-the zoo tells us he was a long-time mechanic who's maintained the zoo's fleet of golf carts. >> he was a lovely person, he really was. he was a great colleague, a great co-worker and asset to the zoo. he's going to be missed. >> lombardo told nbc 10 grief counselors are being made

available to other zoo workers. jim rosenfeld, nbc 10 news. watch as flames devour an suv outside of atlantic city synagogue. that vehicle belongs to the congregation's rabbi. it went up in flames on rosh hashanah. nbc 10 jersey shore reporter ted greenberg is live in atlantic city. ted, there's no avenue cause to this fire but the rabbi seems convinced about what happened here. >> reporter: jackie and keith, this right here is a charred piece of the rabbi's suv. you can see the damage to the synagogue left behind by this fire. it's taken an emotional toll on the congregation's members during theç holiest time on th hebrew calendar. >> it leaves room for suspicion. >> reporter: the jewish new year was just hours old when the suv erupted into flames near the

synagogue. >> it's a time of looking into the future. this puts a damper on the holidays. >> from several calls, they believe the vehicle involved may have exploded. >> reporter: firefighters were dispatched to the synagogue around 2:00 a.m. thursday. he left the car in the lot when he later walked home after services. >> is there anyone you can contact, arson investigators? >> reporter: the fire which left the synagogue with minor damage is still in the early stages of being investigated. i asked atlantic city authorities if it's being probed as a hate crime. please told me that possibility is not being ruled out and that increased patrols here. rabbi kushner is convinced the blaze was no accident. >> it's hurtful but it's not anger. it's more of a sadness that this

is a reality in our time. >> reporter: were there any threats the synagogue received prior to this? >> no. >> reporter: many holocaust survivors and their families belong to the congregation. >> the emotional scars that healed over the years may well have re-opened due to this incident. it behooves all of us to be aware of that, this type of action happens in the world and be vigilant in order to prevent it. >> reporter: yom kippur is friday night and saturday and synagogue leaders tell me as a result of the fire, they're in the process of hiring their own private security. live in atlantic city, i'm ted greenberg, nbc 10 news. two men are in the hospital after getting shot this morning in west philadelphia. police say the victims were hit multiple times this morning in the 200 block of north avendale street. we're told there have been no arrests in the case.

police in plymouth township are looking for two men for an armed robbery outside an outback steakhouse. first the men demanded their wallets, cash and phones. an employee was forced to empty out the restaurant's cash drawers. after that, both robbers took off. now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> well, today wasn't as warm as the weekend but it was still very comfortable outside. as people walked along main street in norristown. temperatures have been nice, we could use the rain. >> that's right. nbc 10 first alert meteorologist sheena parveen has her eyes on the radar. >> sheena, you're track something showers out there. >> we have light showers, sprinkles moving in. not exactly the type of rain we need right now. because we are in a deficit. at least it is something. you see the green, this is light rain or just sprinkles. there's a little bit of moderate

rain trying to fall as we zoom in on parts of new castle county, along 95. this area has the best chance of seeing rainfall, especially as you move up into parts of chester, delaware counties as well. even around philadelphia. all way up to trenton, lower bucks county and lower montgomery county. this is manly on the lighter side. we continue tracking these areas. we have cooler temperatures in the forecast, too, i'll show you that seven-day coming up. >> wilmington, delaware and camden, new jersey are both high on the department of justice's list of most violent american cities. but it is now trying to give those cities some help. wilmington and camden will join detroit, chicago and oakland, california in the justice department's new violence reduction network. this two-year program will assign each city a federal go-to person who can get them access to all sorts of federal crime-fighting resources like the atf and the fbi. this is not a federal takeover. we're told it is just another way to make sure cities have the

cools they need and the know-how to use them. wilmington has over the last few years steadily gone up in its violent crime. it is absolutely essential that we bring new strategies to the table and new resources to the table. >> wilmington mayor dennis williams along with his police chief and counterparts from camden went to the justice department's kickoff event in washington today. they will be part of a summit that continues through wednesday. money for the federal government will help students in the lehigh valley. a grant has been given. the school must also work with employers to help connect students with jobs after they graduate. northampton was the only college in the area to receive a grant. september is national preparedness month and the american red cross wants to make sure pennsylvanians are ready if a disaster should strike. today representatives from wells

there's a proposal on the table to save the trump taj mahal casino. but atlantic city's mayor turned it down. billionaire carl icahn offered to spend $100 million to keep the taj open but there were some

stipulations. he wanted steep tax breaks from atlantic city and $25 million from a state redevelopment agency. union workers would have to give up pension and health insurance. mayor don guardian says the city'sstressed to grant the request. stay with nbc 10 and nbc10.com for the latest on atlantic city's casino crisis. the trump name took another hit on twitter. take a look at this message posted by donald trump. it contains a photo that someone asked him to retweet. the man claimed that the couple were his parents who were inspired by trump but it's actually a pair of notorious serial killers named fred and rose west. trump took down the post about an hour later and wrote another message saying, quote, maybe i'll sue. an engineer injured in the

2013 derailment of a commuter train in bridgeport, connecticut is suing the railroad. the lawsuit claims metro north failed to provide a safe work environment and operated the railroad recklessly. four of the 28 people who sued metro north have accepted settlements. a train derailed and was struck about 20 seconds later by another train. more than 70 people were injured. jury selection began today in the trial of a friend of the boston marathon bombing suspect. he's one of three friends of dzhokhar tsarnaev. he's accused of lying to investigators. he pleaded not guilty. tsarnaev's other two friends have been convicted for impeding the investigation. last week, a judge granted a two-month trial delay for tsarnaev but denied a defense request to have the trial moved out of boston.

the bombing killed three people and injured more than 260 others. his brother was killed in a police shootout days after the bombings. if anybody agents co-- fbi come and kick in george zimmerman's doors, he'll probably shoot a couple of them, that's according to his father in an interview. he says they live like outcasts and are only able to get by by relying on one another. some family members have been forced to move. new questions about the secret service and its ability to protect the president of the united states. >> this comes after a seering "washington post" report which claims the agency grossly mishandled a shooting that occurred back in 2011. nbc news white house correspondent kristen welker has theç details. >> reporter: with the secret service under intense scrutiny for this fence-jumping intruder, new revelations about gunshots

fired into the executive mansion three years ago. >> this is where investigators believed the shots came from. >> reporter: "the washington post" reports back in november of 2011 oscar ramiro hertago hernandez fired a shot at the white house while parked a quarter mile away. >> the supervisor that night on duty calls out stand down, disregard. it's just a construction noise. >> reporter: it took four days for the agency to realize the white house had been hit seven times. the discovery came only after a housekeeper found broken glass on the truman balcony. >> there appears to be a bullet lodged in a window sill and certainly a bullet hole in one of the central glass windows. that is, again, right outside the family's living room. >> reporter: sasha was home at the time with her grandmother. the president and first lady were traveling and didn't find out for several days. it was an usher who told the

off. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist sheena parveen. >> well, after a beautiful, warm weekend, first weekend of fall felt more like summer, now we're starting out with cloudy conditions for the start of your week. also a mild start to your week. not as warm as yesterday and saturday. we're still on the mild side. we're tracking showers, though, a few light showers around tonight. some later on this week but we do have cooler temperatures coming, too. it looks like they'll be coming just in time for the weekend. so a cooler weekend so far. i'll show you that in the seven-day forecast coming up. right now, here's a live look outside across philadelphia. we're seeing overcast conditions. a few light showers around, mostly north and west of philadelphia. but either way, we're seeing the cloud cover. 72 degrees in philadelphia. this has helped to keep the temperatures down in about the mid-70s. humidity is up, 71% humidity right now. temperatures are in the 70s because of the clouds.

wilmington coming in at 69 degrees. light rain around wilmington and new castle county. 73 northeast philly through the lehigh valley. mid-70s, south jersey and delaware, mid-to-low 70s. this is closer to our average high temperature of the year. here's a look at the radar. the green coloring is showing you either very light rain or just sprinkles around the area. we'll start with parts of mercer county, the yellow showing moderate rain. this has moved up to the north of hopewell. possibly seeing sprinkles there. patchy areas of moderate rain through lower buck and montgomery county mainly. we slide down, missing philadelphia but still a few sprinkles around the area. also for delaware county and moving into new castle county around the i-95 corridor, few areas of patchy, moderate rain possibly but most of this is on the light side. so the rainç is mainly traveli to the north and west of philadelphia, traveling up to the northeast. we'll see a chance of a few sprinkles and the forecast as we

skyforce 10 live over breaking news in north philadelphia. we understand crews had to rescue a woman out of a manhole. >> she has been rescued at this time, the location of this is north 17th street and west ontario. the woman was stuck in a manhole. fortunately she was removed and taken to the hospital. we'll get more information to you about her condition as we receive it. new tonight, a scam warning for those who live in lower marion township, montgomery county. police say there's been an increase in phone scams where someone pretends to be a representative of peco. we tell the victim their account is the past due and typically demand they pay through a visa green dot money pack. police want to remind you that peco would never call you or ask you for money over the phone. if one of these scammers contacts you, you're asked to

call police. a stroll on the boardwalk has been costing south jersey communities big bucks. that according to a new study. it found in the last five years, $1.8 million has been paid out because of injuries people claimed they received on the boardwalk. just last february, a $400,000 settlement was awarded to a woman hurt while riding her bike on the boardwalk in wildwood. another case ended this month with a $150,000 settlement for a woman injured on atlantic city's promena promenade. general motors is warning corvette owners not to use one of the high-tech features. valet mode records conversation and performance data. secret recordings are illegal in several states. gm is working on a software fix. a north jersey neighborhood is mourning right now. >> the emotion stretches all the

this is nbc 10 breaking news. we continue with new details on breaking news, nbc 10 has been following in south philadelphia. skyforce 10 was over the scene of a school bus crash at 15th and passyunk this afternoon. the philadelphia school district now tells us that eight students were taken to the hospital. but all students had minor injuries. they were on their way home from the school. we're still looking into what led up to that crash. couldn't the on nbc 10 for the latest information on this breaking news story. right now, an investigation is under way in north jersey after a house fire kills two people. the victims, the president of cooper university health system and his wife. >> the fire early yesterday

morning has left the victims' neighbors and loved ones devastated. nbc 10's cydney long spent the day at the scene of the fire. there's still so many questions about what exactly happened. >> reporter: jacqueline and keith, so many more questions than answers, as we speak. like were there working smoke detectors inside the family's home and why weren't the sheridans, this couple, able to escape without harm. there's not very much visible fire damage to the outside of the home. it is still decorated with those halloween decorations out front and has been eerily quiet here today as police told this scene as a crime scene. just within the last half hour, though, a detective did appear. he appeared to be holding a search warrant. he went inside and came out within five minutes with some type of evidence in a paper bag. >> totally shock. >> reporter: friends, neighbors, the medical and political communities of new jersey will wait at least one more day to

learn how and why cooper hospital's ceo john sheridan and his wife, died suddenly sunday morning. somehow trapped in the second bedroom of their skillman, somerset county home. >> we have heavy smoke coming out of the room of the attic's second story. >> reporter: it's been nearly 36 hours since fire personnel respond, reporting thick white smoke but few flames. no one went into or out of the home today. the somerset county prosecutor's office tells nbc 10 they cannot say if the fire is suspicious or tell us the cause but that preliminary autopsy results are due back from the state medical examiner's office tuesday. sheridan was a prominent figure in new jersey health care and a former deputy attorney general. this doctor didn't know sheridan but news of the heartbreaking tragedy is spreading quickly to hospitals across the region. >> everyone at the hospital is in absoluteç and total disbeli. we have the newspapers for the patients. they're in total disbelief.

i saw the headlines. everyone is talking about that. >> reporter: now, fire investigators do tell us that the fire seemed to be contained to that second floor master bedroom. in the meantime, the somerset county prosecutor's office, their major crimes unit is asking anyone who may have any information at all about this fire to please come forward. live in skillman, in somerset county, cydney long, nbc 10 news. here are some of the stories making headlines at 5:30. a long-time employee of the philadelphia zoo died after a golf cart fell on him while he was working this morning. the 59-year-old man was discovered pinned underneath a vehicle after he failed to show up for a 10:00 a.m. meeting. after 17 days of searching, police say they believe they have a new sighting of fugitive eric frein. today the fbi found a checkbook with his name on it. they also reportedly found ammo for a .308 caliber rifle near a campsite in barrett township.

frein is wanted for the deadly ambush of two pennsylvania state troopers earlier this month. a former philadelphia sportscaster pleaded guilty to stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars intended for charity. don tollefson appeared in court today. prosecutors say he sold tickets for sport packages with the promise the money would go to charity but instead, he made off with it. new information tonight about a woman who remains in critical condition after she was shot while walking her dog over the weekend. it happened saturday night in the 3200 block of moore street in center city. police say someone saw the man who shot 42-year-old katherine berry, the witness says the man was standing on steps on the north side of the street as berry walked her dog, the witness says the man stepped into the street and began shooting her. new video from an nbc 10 viewer shows the two-story row home fire that displaced several people in philadelphia. it happened just before noon in the 3300 block of hope street in kensington. fire officials say everyone made

it out safely and the fire was quickly put under control. the red cross is helping those who were displaced. the cause remains under investigation. pennsylvania state police need your help catching a man who robbed a dollar general in berks county this weekend. take a look at the suspect who's wearing a gray t-shirt, white cap and jeans in this photo. police say he walked into the store on west weiss street in topton borough. he reached in the cash drawer and grabbed money before taking off. he was later spotted at the hess gas station in topt on. the city has received three grants from the department of justice worth nearly a million dollars. the money will be used for violence prevention programs that keep kids in school and help them get jobs. one of those programs is the school justice collaboration. its goal is to reduce school arrests by 50%.

well, instead of a day on the field, some of philadelphia phillies alumni spent the day on the greens. it was all part of a charity golf tournament at plymouth country club. the former philly is battling brain cancer. his foundation provides financial assistance to those affected by brain cancer, tumors and injuries. some of his teammates from the 1993 team were there, including tommy green, larry anderson and milt thompson. from baseball to football now, the eagles lost their first game of the season yesterday. they lacked solid offense but they're about to get reinforcement. john clark? help is on the way for the eagles and their offensive line. a suspended lineman is back. plus, could ryan howard be done as a philly? we'll hear from him, next. also ahead, rethinking school safety. how students areç welding thei way to boxing up classroom danger. but first, here's what's

yesterday's loss to the 49ers was the season's first for the eagles. >> the team lacked an offensive punch but help is on the way. comcast sports net's john clark gives us the details. >> the offensive line was playing three backups yesterday. chip kelly says the line got whooped. but lane johnson is back. he served a four-game suspension for using performance-enhancing drugs. the eagles had their fewest rushing yards in nine years and nick foles got hit a lot. take a look right there. he was under pressure. hopefully the return of lane johnson will bring stability to the offensive line. he'll be back at right tackle. chip kelly spoke with him today. >> we haven't seen him for a month. he told me he was at ati in dallas working out and there were other players there. he looked good.

a few areas of sprinkles around for the evening, maybe very light rain. that's about it. more showers as we go through this week. we have cooler temperatures and it does look like they should start to set in just in time for this coming weekend. some areas in the upper 60s. i'll show you the seven-day in just a second. here's what it looks like, center city from the adventure aquarium, still overcast skies and, again, areas with a few sprinkles around. temperatures have dropped because of that. 72 in philadelphia. we've already gotten to 76 degrees today but now we're cooling down a bit. 71 pottstown, 74 in allentown and reading. 73 northeast philly. low 70s through much of south jersey and delaware. upper 60s in wilmington. that's where they've seen a little bit of light rainfall on the east. the rain is mostly stretching from wilmington(tn the trenton area. this is the light rain surrounding the major interstates here. newport seeing light rain, carncair

carn carney's point as well. the philadelphia area mainly just seeing very light rain or just sprinkles. same thing if we go through parts of bucks county, lower montgomery county along 276, 295 into mercer county. this is very light. it's nothing that will help our rainfall deficit. for the rest of the evening we'll keep light showers or sprinkles just in the forecast. big area of cloud cover along the mid-atlantic states. not too much moisture with this. the green is showing you very light rain but off to our west, there is clearing. by tomorrow, this will all be shifting to the east and we'll see more in the way of sunshine. here's a look at our rainfall deficit for the month of september so far. in philadelphia, almost 2 inches. in mt. pocono, almost 4 inches below what's considered normal. allentown, 3. >>s below. same thing in trenton. in reading, 2 inches below what's considered normal so far for the month of september. we actually do need quite a bit of rainfall. i don't think we'll get it in the next several days. future weather showing some of

the clouds breaking up tomorrow. we'll see a mix of clouds and sun. 9:00 in the morning we don't really expect any rain. through the afternoon, more sunshine than today. as we go into wednesday, we'll start to see our rain chances come back. mainly the later half of the day. we should see showers as we go into wednesday afternoon. for tonight, cloudy and mild. we'll see light rain and sprinkles around the area. 61 for low in philadelphia, 55 areas north and west. tomorrow, mix of clouds and sun. 76 to 79 degrees. still pretty nice day as far as our temperatures are concerned. then wednesday you see the rain coming back into the forecast. not a ton of rain but at least we have some. on thursday, mid-70s going into friday and the weekend late friday night, overnight into saturday morning, that's when we expect real rain to move in. as we go into saturday morning, you could be waking up, early showers. it clears out. the temperatures drop down. on sunday for the eagles home game we could only be in the upper 60s. nascar driver tony stewart addressed the media and took

questions for the very first time since he found out he will not face charges in the death of kevin ward jr. last month, ward died after being hit by stewart's car in a short track dirt race. stewart said he thinks about the accident several times a day and has basically been in seclusion for the last seven weeks. >> i think about it a lot every day. you know, that's the great thing about getting back in the race car, it gives me time to forget about it for a minute and to stop thinking about it and then, you know, after you get done at the end of the day you start thinking about it again. it's not something that goes away. it will never go away. >> stewart says he's not sure if he's ever going to race sprint cars again. putting school safety in the handses of students. >> one unique idea being put in effect at one philadelphia school. how these boxes are helping keep darker out of the classroom.

>> nbc 10's rosemary connors is live outside school district headquarters. tell us about this new drop box program. >> reporter: here's what i learned. about six high schools throughout the district will get metal boxes lined with bulletproof material. kids can drop off things like weapons and drugs. less contra banned in the classroom means they don't have to stop what they're doing and process an arrest. the district came up with this program but the boxes are being designed by students. this metal box may not look like much but it's a source of great pride for these students at randolph technical high school in east falls. >> originally it was going to be a wooden box with a metal frame. i said why would it be a wooden box? there's going to be firearms in there. >> reporter: the teams in this welding class are designing these amnesty boxes as they're called that will be placed in philadelphia high schools that have a history of weapons or drug problems. students can drop off contra

banned before they go through the metal detectors, no question asked. >> because the drop box will be in the entrance of school, is it truly anonymous? >> it is because my personnel have been instructed whoever puts something in the drop box can go along about their business. they still have to go through the scan but now ostensively they've gotten rid of contraband or a weapon. >> reporter: representatives responsible for donating the welding equipment couldn't help but marvel at the students' ingenuity. >> anytime you can make a connection with how the students learn with something that can impact the local people in the local community, you haveç ownership. >> i'm glad i'm part of it. if it's a live saved, i'm glad i definitely helped. >> reporter: these six high schools where the boxes will be placed have not been named yet but the chief inspector tells me they'll be at locations where there's been a history of violence or drug problems, both in the school and in the neighborhood.

nbc 10 breaking news. >> we have this in to nbc 10 right now. skyforce 10 over north philadelphia where crews had to rescue a bowoman out of a manho here. this is north 17th and west ontario streets. we're told the woman is out of the manhole and she's being taken to the hospital. we don't have word on the extent of her injuries. a woman had to be rescued from a manhole in north philadelphia this afternoon. now to an update on breaking news we've been following this afternoon as well. eight students we've been told

have been taken to the hospital this afternoon after their school bus was involved in an accident in south philadelphia. skyforce 10 over this scene at 15th street and passyunk avenue. firefighters tell us the bus collided with a car. we're told the children's injuries are not serious. the students were returning home from al aqsa islamic academy when the accident happened. we're following a story out of the philadelphia police department. internal affairs investigating an incident involving officers in the 18th district. that's west philadelphia. not many details being officially released. domestic situation. it's a sources tell nbc 10 who officers wearing their uniforms got into an argument that turned into a fight on friday. it was a man and a female our. we're toll the woman has two black eyes this evening. the male officer has been re-assign. we don't know if the woman officer is back at work. we're working to get more information about this case and we'll update you as soon as we get it. other news now, i
