>> announcer: nbc 10 news starts now. 5v right now on nbc little girl is the victim of a hit and run driver. the 77-year-old is rushed to th hospital as a witness takes off after the suspect. good evening, that witness followed the suspect's car until the driver blew a red light on 38th street in west philadelphia. the witness tells nbc 10 says he heard a boom and saw the car driving off. he chased the oupñander and shot video that included the license plate. he gave that video to investigators. they tell us this is the car they're looking for tonight.

it happened around 6:45 tonight in west philadelphia. 67-year-old mccclane is in guarded condition tonight. >> the driver, he or she, i don't know if it's a male or female, took him -- came around another car and basically hit her, then ran over, stopped, looked back, seen that he hit someone or she hit someone and then took on. so what it is, i hope you're man or woman enough to turn yourself in. >> police are looking for a distinctive lime-green mitsubishi outlander last seen on 38th street and jigirard ave.

we first told you about this story on nbc 10 news at 6:00. john and joy zerks heridan were killed when their home in central nj nj went up in flames. but their circumstances surrounding their deaths are still under investigation. the fire started just after 6:00 this morning. it was contained to the couple's bedroom. but investigators still don't know what sparked the flames. investigators say john sheridan died at the scene. his wife was taken to the hospital where she died a short time later. well, late tonight, governor chris christie released this statement to nbc 10 on the sheidan's desk. >> a true new jersey treasure. joyce was an outstanding teacher, wife and mother. in a statement to nbc 10, cooper's chairman of the board of trustees, george norcross

says it is hard to overstate how great a loss john's death is to his family, friends, co-workers and cooper. there is no one else who has had as big an impact on me as john did except my father. and before joining cooper, sheridan had a long career in state government. he was new jersey transportation's commissioner under governor tom cane and held roles for chris christien and christine todd whitman. count on nbc 10 and nbc10.com to follow the developments surrounding the deaths of john and joy shreridan. >> there's no suspect ins the philadelphia woman shot while walking her dog. the victim's son identifies her as 42-year-old catherine berry. nbc 10's doug schimel spoke to

her family and has more from police head kwaurlters. >> reporter: the victim's family tells us there's no warnings, no threats and now a mother is gone. >> they tore a family apart. for what? >> reporter: 42-year-old catherine berry was walking home to her family saturday night. >> she was a good mother. she was a dear, sweet woman. she was a goodhearted. and the senselessness of it. >> reporter: around 8:30, a man stepped out of the shadows. >> she went to the store, you know, she was walking down the street and he was standing there waiting for her and just shot her. >> at close range, catherine berry was wounded in the head and leg and police say she did not survive the night. >> i give my sympathy to the family. like i say, it's just been going around here so long. it's time to stop. >> her family says they don't know why someone would target the home health aide and mother of four.

. a stunt show turns tragic today. the monster truck failed to brake after driving across a row of parked cars. it plowed into a group of people who were just watching. local police have tweeted the driver has since been arrested. tonight, an american doctor exposed to a bullet is at the national institutes of health hospital near the nation's capitol. he arrived today and was admitted to a special isolation unit for observation. now, the head of infectious diseases there says an exposure to a bullet doesn't necessarily mean someone will become sick. now, the philadelphia union

west, southwest. we'll see a mild start in philadelphia, but we will see cooler temperatures for suburbs north and west. 62 in pottstown, low 60s in swedesboro. still in the low 60s more mt. holly. closer to the shore, we're at 70 degrees and 68 in avenue lon. we are expecting a cool down as we head into next week. our average this time of year, 73 degrees. we'll still be well above the average, but not quite as warm as what we saw today and yesterday. 78 as we head into tuesday and then the cold front will help drop down below average. we do have a service here that's bringing showers to parts of florida. we are going to look to the great lakes. we have another weather disturbance here and a cold front associated that's going to show a little bit kroeser to us. that's what's going to help drop our tempature.

the man hunt for cop killer frein is moving in a slightly different direction tonight. officers are combing through the woods as residents hope it will payoff.

they're keeping tabs on a massive man hunt. >> just before nightfall, federal agents get in position, barely visible in the forest. they're hoping the darkness gives them the break they need. an eerie silence everywhere, except for the sound of a chopper flying low and slow. that intense operation playing out almost in the rivera family's backyard. >> they were behind the house there and nearly down our driveway. >> they say the police makes them feel safer sometimes. and sometimes more afraid. >> i like when there was more light outside. then, we just go to sleep and pray and hope for the best. >> the longer this goes, the longer it is that police estimate frein planned the ambush and his escape. they're now saying he probably took years based on the trail that he's left behind.

investigators saw a man jump out of a car. they chased him down and made the arrest. he was identified by a witness at the scene. a delaware driver who police say wasn't wearing his seat belt was arrested and charged with much more than a traffic ticket. officers stopped matthew trently in camden-kent county friday. police say they found an ar-15 assault rifle, brass knuckles and marijuana in his car. he's being held on $13,000 bail. >> now, your nbc 10 first l:÷

rescue operations continue today in japan. many sight seers have been rescued. but officials found 31 bodies near the summit. >> searchers used helicopters and stretchers to bring injured helicopters down in japan today.

at one point, hundreds were believed to be trapped on the mountain. members searched lodges and paths covered in ash looking for sur visors. they were able to bring 19 people down by helicopter. rescuers also found another 31 people near the peak. rescuers weren't sure how many people were on the mountain when it erupted. they plan to climb the mountain again tomorrow. >> dinner, dancing and fund raising.

hundreds of people pay their way to the fundraiser tonight. the money raised goes to michael shell lee, a high school freshman who was diagnosed with limb foe ma. the 14-year-old was able to go home for a week. he'll head back to the hopt tomorrow for his first round of chemotherapy. nbc 10 for a fifth annual lobster party. >> good evening.
