investigators right now looking into this deadly bus crash in new castle county. two people died in the rollover crash. two dozen others are being treated for their injuries. we broke you this story last night as breaking news at 6:00. the tour bus was returning to new york city after a trip to washington, d.c. tim furlong is live outside christiana hospital in newark. >> reporter: i've been checking and rechecking all day with the hospital. 20 victims are still here at the hospital. one of them remains in critical condition. we can also tell you today, the feds got involved, trying to figure exactly what happened at that off-ramp, if there was traffic, maybe you want to jump over to avoid some of that traffic you could go down to delaware 1 up to 13 to get to the delaware memorial bridge quicker. if you get after that off-ramp, you have to go real slow.

>> a bus rollover, approximately 50 people on board were you knew right away it was serious. everyone on that bus had some sort of injury after it rolled over going from delaware 1 south on to route 13 north. a guy who witnessed it tried to help. >> i guess what really got to me is when i found out one woman died. i do recall someone -- i guess she was trapped underneath the bus. one man saying my wife, my wife. >> reporter: 54-year-old chen died at the scene. another woman died at the hospital overnight. today at the scene, an exit hatch rest in the brush along with lots of the victims' belongings. the ntsb announced it will be investigating the crash and what led to it. >> it keeps on replaying in my mind. it made me think about how fragile life is. >> reporter: the bus driver went to st. francis hospital in wilmington with minor injuries. police are saying drugs and alcohol not appearing to be a factor. the bus was headed home after a long weekend tour in d.c.

decide for themselves. and like i said, we admitted to our -- we admitted to a lot of things last week. and i had an interview with join and i had an interview with jeff and i had an interview with james brown. i saw all 34 -- i answered 34 questions with james brown and then i found out actually, i think, this morning, there were only five of them on the news. i had thought that we had gotten our side of the story out, but as it turned out, very few of the 60 answers that i gave to those three sources were actually ever put out or published or something like that. so i realized then that i'd be getting a lot of the same questions, because you all hadn't seen them. >> steve -- [ inaudible ].

espn report. we'll continue to monitor this news conference and we'll bring you new updates as soon as we get them for you. now to a developing story from the vast woods and terrain of the pocono mountains. >> pennsylvania state police believe they're closing in on the self-taught survivalist wanted for the ambush shooting of two state troopers ten days ago. nbc 10 doug shimell back in monroe county where the manhunt is still under way. >> doug, describe the manpower and firepower effort involved here. >> reporter: well, with that road block back there, much of the day, it has been massive and it has been relentless. but as these woods are known as hunter's paradise, over the last two weeks, they've proven to be a fugitive's paradise as well. they'd been straining to see any movement at all. police had reports of a man seen covering himself with leaves in dense woods in price township, monroe county. >> do not approach.

bring the bloodhound over. >> reporter: searchers said they found no one. >> we need to push guys to the right. >> reporter: the police hunt for eric frein has been on and around alex'sç 35 acres. he continues to check the padlocks on the buildings he's renovating. >> it was in the back of everybody's mind, what if one of my workers open up a door or a building, hey, there's a crazy guy in there. it's a concern. >> we'll be moving, coming down at you. >> reporter: it's been the frustrating part in the search for the survivalist sniper who ambushed and killed pennsylvania state police corporal bryon dickson and wounded trooper alex douglass ten days ago. >> i always believe there's progress. troopers are out there very actively. the fbi is out there very actively. and i feel confident that we should be able to apprehend this individual. >> reporter: and the governor has pledged this search will not

bird's-eye view, showing you the scope of the search in that densely wooded area where police believe eric frein is on the run, all new this afternoon at 4:30. now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> cool, windy conditions outside with only hours now left of summer. nbc 10's first alert weather counting down to fall and boy, it sure feels like it. nbc 10's countdown clock ticking away the last few minutes, last few hours of the summer season. just over now six hours until autumn arrives at 10:29 tonight. just how cold will it get tonight? >> nbc 10 first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is outside on the nbc 10 patio. how does it feel out there, glenn? >> i happen to be in the shade at the moment. it's pretty chilly. if you're out in the sun, it's certainly a lot more comfortable. the wind is constant, then it gusts sometimes 25 to 30 miles an hour, obviously making it feel even cooler. well, the temperatures are a whole lot lower than they were at this time yesterday.

look how blue that sky is. but it is only 66 degrees in allentown. 69 in philadelphia. and warm spots, 73 in georgetown. those temperatures are way below average, especially for a fairly sunny day. look at the wind gusts, 30 miles an hour, still up in reading, 28 miles an hour in lancaster. now, those winds will die down. that's going to be the key to how cold it's going to get tonight. and do expect it to go nearly calm and with the light wind and low humidity, philadelphia itself down to 49, to the northern, western suburbs, as cold as 39 degrees. again, way below average. we do have a big warmup coming but we also have the threat of some significant rain, at least in parts of the area. that's coming up with the seven-day in a few minutes. >> see you then, glenn. new information about the kidnapping and murder of two brothers from chester county. philadelphia police are asking for the public's help finding this guy right here, 42-year-old tamç lee.

he's wanted for his involvement in two murders. the brothers along with another man were tied up and thrown into the schuylkill river last month. the third victim survived. he told police they were kidnapped, stabbed and dumped into the river. investigators say the brothers gambled away $100,000 they were given to buy drugs, then they were ab duducted and held for ransom. a political lobbyist arrested for sexual assault is free on bail tonight. his firm confirms he's been placed on administrative leave. a.j. marisco. his cousin is a pennsylvania state rep. neither have returned calls for comment. his lawyer says he is stunned by the allegations. nbc 10 news has learned the investigation into the attack on a same-sex couple in center city

is moving from the police department to the d.a. nbc 10's deanna durante continues our 20 minutes of nonstop news. >> fill us in on the latest developments here. >> reporter: police here at the police administration building tell me they can confirm the case file has been sent to the office of seth williams, the philadelphia district attorney. it's now up to that office what, if any, charges will be filed in this case. i've been in touch with several lawyers who are representing people they say have been seen on surveillance video, surveillance video police released early last week. this following that attack that happened in center city back on september 11th. now, police did release those images they told us in the hopes of being able to identify some of the people on the tapes so they could learn more about what happened on that street cornerback on september 11th. now, late last week, those what

had knowledge of the case began showing up to the central detective's division to tell investigators what they say happened that evening and some lawyers tell me their clients that they represent did nothing wrong, they were merely seen on the video. the archdiocese confirmed some are graduates of archbishop wood in bucks county. one of those seen is a former coach who resigned once that tape was made public. police had been investigating this case as a hate crime. pennsylvania law does not cover sexual orientation in the hate crime statute. it's up to the district attorney as to which charges will be filed. they expect the determination to be made sometime this week. defense lawyers i've spoken to say they've not yet heard anything from the d.a.'s office about bringing their clients in or potential charges. we'll bring you the latest as soon as it becomes available. live outside of police headquarters, deanna durante, nbc 10 news. now to decision 2014 and the

race for pennsylvania governor, the two candidates will face each other this evening for the first of three scheduled debates this campaign season. republican incumbent tom corbett and democratic challenger tom wolf will square off on the issues in hershey tonight at 7:30. jacqueline london is live in our digital operations center this afternoon. >> jacqueline, give us a snapshot of what the viewers can expect from the candidates tonight. >> renee and jim, political analysts think tonight is the night for governor tom corbett to go on the offensive. that's because going into this debate, democratic challenger tom wolf has the advantage when it comes to polling and money. for months, independent polls have shown wolf with a wide lead over corbett. in fact, a new quinnipiac university poll shows new york businessmen with a ç24-point ld over the governor. wolf is also headed into the final seven weeks of the campaign with a more than $1.5 million cash advantage over corbett. while we know the candidates disagree on many issues from education and taxes, this will

give them an opportunity to explain their ideas not only to the expected 1,600 people in the audience but also everyone watching at home. we did speak with one political an test who says these candidates have been heavily coached and he would not expect any major winners or losers this evening. live in the digital operation center, jacqueline london, nbc 10 news. as we mentioned tonight's debate in hershey is the first of three total debates, the second to be held october 1st in philadelphia. while the final debate will happen october 8th in the pittsburgh area. this all leads up to election day november 4th. nbc 10's lu ann cahn is in hershey. full coverage on nbc 10 news tonight at 11:00 and nbc10.com. happening now, more than 500 nurses from crozer-chester medical center in delaware county are back out on the picket line. the planned two-day walkout began yesterday. the nurses have been working

without a contract since june 8th. the major sticking points are staffing, pay and retirement funds. there are temporary workers in place to fill the spots of the striking nurses. no new contract talks are scheduled. the hospital says they continue to deliver high-quality care during the strike. officials tell us patient volume has increased at crozer. ed amissions at crozer yesterday exceeded planned levels by 30%. this included four new moms whose babies were born at crozer. the hospital issued a statement today saying, in part, patients and he their loved ones can be assured that crozer is fully staffed with licensed, certified, experienced and highly trained nurses. a bill to provide crucial funding for the cash strapped philadelphia school district is slated for a vote today in harrisburg. the city's $2 per back cigarette tax would provide about $50 million a year. a committee approved the plan last week but the house put off the vote until at least today. house leaders tell nbc 10 they

do have the votes to pass this. the school district is about $81 million, right now, in debt. the world meeting of families kicks off in philadelphia one year from today. to celebrate this milestone, a cutout of pope francis visited the philadelphia zoo today, all indications are that the pope himself plans to attend the world meeting of families though his official travel plans have not yet been confirmed by the vatican. nbc 10 traveled with the delegation from philadelphia as they visited the pope at the vatican back in march. they were there to personally invite him to the city. now preparations are in full swing and the countdown is on. >> we're going to be bringing international visitors here from at least 130 countries. it's an opportunity for us to come together to emphasize the role of the family and also to show what a spectacular archdiocese we have and a terrific community we have.

seen out there today. still going on and a really cold night, especially for this early in the season. more like middle of october than late september. it's only 69 degrees, despite the sunshine, northwest wind at 15, gusting at 23. we're 8 degrees cooler than we were yesterday at this time yesterday. and we have places, many places, in the 60s, even with the sunshine. gives you an idea of how chilly this air mass is. and these are the sustained winds. you can see the direction, the northwest bringing in cooler weather, about 15 miles an hour. and once the wind dies down, the temperature will be able to go down pretty quickly. 39 in allentown, 41 quakertown and reading. these are the lows i'm predicting for tonight. 49 in mt. holly, 40 in vineland. 46 in dover. and 44 degrees in glassboro.

that's a chilly night. you need some kind of jacket or sweater in the morning. fair weather clouds, with an otherwise sunny day. where we're watching is down to the south where there's moisture. it's not all that well organized now but it may very well get organized. and the question is going to be how far north is this moisture going to go. there's nothing going on here on tuesday. tuesday we're in the clear. wednesday the clouds may start to increase and then here comes some of that rain. it has east winds, going to keep things cool. this particular computer model brings in fairly heavy rain and other models don't even bring it up at all. so we'll keep trying to refine that as we get closer to thursday. in the meantime, it's clear and unseasonably cool tonight. 49 for the low in philadelphia. mostly sunny, temperatures up near 70 degrees.

the summer decline of gas prices is extending now into the fall. there's been a dramatic drop over the past week. prices have fallen to a yearly low for 2014. aaa expects the national average to drop more by the end of next month. prices in the five-county philadelphia area dropped 6 cents in the past week. a gallon of gas will cost $3.43 on average. you can expect to pay $3.17 in south jersey. that's down 5 cents since last week. the drivers in delaware saw the biggest drop. the average price there is down to $3.28. the news gets better. aaa says barring any unforeseen circumstance, prices at the pump could fall another 10 to 20

philadelphia. you see that big tanker there and the red car where the door is open and it looks like the white car wedged in between. don't know the details on what caused this accident but what we do know at this time of day, there is a significant backup, again, this is on i-95 in northeast philadelphia near the cottman accident. look at that. we'll stay on top of that story and work to get more information for you on that. right now at 4:30, police believe they are zeroing in on the pennsylvania survivalist wanted for ambushing two state troopers and killing one of them. eric frein has managed to elude police ten days after that shooting. >> but heavily armed federal, state and local agents continue their manhunt at this hour. nbc 10's keith jones is live in our digital operations center. >> what indications are police giving about their search right now. >> they are narrowing the search area. state police say they're following up on, quote, very credible tips. take a look at skyforce 10 over that search area hours ago

today. police have reports of a man covering themselves with leaves in price township, monroe county. they didn't find anyone. the search is focusing on several square mile areas near where eric frein grew up. it's described as rural, rugged terrain. he's charged with killing one trooper and seriously wounding another ten days ago. he's said to be a self-taught survivalist who hates law enforcement. he had been planning a confrontation for months if not years. they believe he may be hiding in self-built bunkers. police say frein ambushed and killed pennsylvania state police corporal bryon dickson and wounded trooper alex douglass in pike county. today tom corbett praised the members of law enforcement who been involved in the search for frein. >> my thoughts and prayers are constantly with those individuals out there, the men and women who were looking for this individual, because they are doing their sworn duty yet they know they are putting their life on the line for somebody who has the intended purpose of killing police officers.

beating scene. police believe they're responsible. sources say the d.a.'s office will now make a determination on charges this week. jury selection continues in montgomery county in the trial of a man accused of killing a 10-month-old girl and her grandmother. seven jurors were selected last week and this morning, a new pool of jurors was brought in to fill the other spots. raghunandan yandamuri is charged with kidnapping the baby nearly two years ago and killing the grandmother. that baby was later found dead. prosecutors say the suspect planned to hold the little girl for ransom to pay off a gambling debt. if a jury is seated, the trial could become by the end of the week. police in west milford say a 22-year-old was hiking with four friends in the apshawa preserve

yesterday when they encountered the bear. they ran in different directions. when they regrouped, they noticed one person was missing. a bear at the scene was euthanized. evidence indicated darsh patel had been attacked by that bear. a rutgers university sophomore died after attending a party at a frat house. cause of the death has not been determined. officials believe alcohol may have been involved here. friends say 19-year-old caitlyn ve kovacs appeared to be in distress early sunday. they took her to the hospital where she died. it has been nearly two years since superstorm sandy struck. now billions of dollars in federal funding is on its way to make public transportation in our area more storm resistant. a total of $3.6 billion will be

available to fund 40 projects. new jersey transit will receive about 1.3 billion. nearly 87 million will go to septa. the money will go towards sealing street level vents and manholes to protect underground pump room and circuit breaker houses. now to the latest on atlantic city's casino crisis. the parent company of trump plaza wants permission to sell off its assets including gambling equipment and furniture. the company filed a motion in bankruptcy court today asking to sell off items from the failed casino which closed last tuesday. the sale would help trump entertainment raise money for its ongoing bankruptcy proceedings and spare the expense of storing and maintaining that equipment. so far this year, four atlantic city casinos have closed. the atlantic city club in january, the show boat on august 31st, revel closed on september 2nd, trump plaza last week and the trump taj mahal could close

down in november. a south jersey firm that manages construction projects around the world planning to move its headquarters to philadelphia. hill international incorporated is currently based in burlington county, marlton but the company will be moving across the river to philadelphia. the company will move 222 jobs to the city over the next three years and has approval for $1.8 million in grants and tax credits. earlier this year, theç philadelphia 76ers announced plans to build offices and practice facilities in camden with the help of tax incentives. foodmaker dietz and watson announced its moving a distribution center to philadelphia from south jersey. today, a boost or a bust? >> new research on electronic cigarettes and whether they're really effective, helping some people kick the habit. >> here's what we're working on right now for nbc 10 at 5:00. over a billion dollars being put into new jersey transit and

breaking news this time over a double shooting in olney. this is happening at old york road and tabor road. you see the police activity. a lot of police vehicles there. officers on the sidewalk there as well. we don't have any word yet on the condition of either of"át two people who were shot but we're working to get more information. there you see part of the scene there cordoned off by crime scene tape. this is very near einstein medical center. no arrests as we understand it right now in this double shooting investigation in olney. count on us to bring you more information just as soon as we get it. new research is fanning the flames in the debate over e-cigarettes. it suggests the devices may not help cancer patients quit smoking. the study found patients who use e-cigarettes as well as tobacco cigarettes are more nicotine dependent. oncologists say it's particularly important for cancer paetschs to quit because smoking increases the risk for

a man who served more than two decades for murder is

getting a new trial. >> his family hopes that new dna evidence will lead to his freedom. anthony wright was convicted of the rape and murder of a 77-year-old nicetown woman. new dna evidence shows the crime was actually committed by another man. wright is not a free man yet but the judge today vacated the verdict against him and ordered a new trial. background here, louise tally was stabbed to death in her home in 1991. wright was convict for the crime in 1993. dna testing was done in 2011. it was linked to another man who died in 2013 in south carolina. >> i'm just happy the process has started, you know. we're not trying to rush our blessings but at least it's in motion. i'm grateful and thankful that the light is starting to show. >> since wright is charged with first degree murder, he's not eligible for bail.

he'll stay in a state prison at graterford for now. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. this fruit stand at broad and snyder at south philly is ready for fall with some of the pumpkins on sale. we're saying good-bye to summer today with fall-like temperatures on the way. and that wind, that's one of the big culprits here. it's bringing in all that cold weather from the great lakes. summer ends in just a few hours. of course we have the chilly winds out there that we've had all day. the temperature certainly hasn't gone up much. we have a cold night. it will be colder tomorrow morning than this morning, significantly so. right now, 69 degrees, 15 mile-an-hour wind gusting to 23 miles an hour. we have seen gusts as high as 30. it is in the 60s across much of the area, low 70s, about the warmer we can get and that's well below average for this time of the year.

like a taj mahal. >> reporter: it's a microhome. thomas o'malley believes little houses like this can make a den in the ocean county's homeless problem, while reducing the amount of taxpayer money currently spent on housing the needy in motels. >> people making $8, $10 an hour cannot afford an parm but they can afford this. >> reporter: o'malley and his group, catholics with friends and a heart for the homeless are pushing pushing for a pilot program. they've popped up in other parts of the nation but o'malley says not yet in new jersey. the group says this year's demolition and shutdown of lakewood's so-called tent city escalated their motivation. >> this is fantastic. >> reporter: steve brigham, a previous ten the city leader now sleeps in the back of a donated mini van. >> we need this for the homeless and low income. >> organizers say donations will

nbc 10 news starts now. pennsylvania state police believe they are closing in on the man wanted -i ambushing two troopers, killing one of them. pennsylvania governor tom corbett said today he is confident authorities will be able to apprehend eric frein. the search for frein is now in its tenth day. police used helicopters and dogs to check dense woods, cliffs and a cave in price township, monroe county. searchers had report of a man in the woods seen covering himself with leaves but they failed to find him. police have described frein as a survivalist who hates law enforcement. the search has left many in the community on edge. property owners like alex say he's been checking the 15 buildings he's renovating. >> it was in the back of everybody's mooned like, hey, what if one of my workers open up a door, open up a building, hey, there's this crazy guy in there. yes, it's a concern.

>> neighbors say police have been using remote controlled drones in the search as well. frein was placed on the fbi's most wanted list after the ambush that killed corporal bryon dickson and critically wounded trooper alex douglass. tonight a federal investigation is under way in delaware. >> two people were killed, dozens more injured after a tour bus lost control and flipped over. it was heading back to new york after a weekend trip to washington wd.c. tim furlong is in newark. how are the victims doing at the moment? >> reporter: it's a little tough, this math. here are the numbers as we stan. there were 50 people injured in the crash. two women have now died. the three children in the crash were released today from the hospital. the driver of the bus had minor injuries. he went to st. francis hospital. here at christiana hospital, there are still 20 people in the hospital, one of those people is in critical condition.
