of an attempted bank robbery. this is in gladwyn. the doors were locked and they left. police and canine dogs are now searching for the suspects. >> we continue to follow a developing story that shots were fired outside the kip charter school. kids were on the playground at the time. witnesses tell nbc 10 the children hit the ground when they heard the gunfire and took shelter. former raven's star ray rice could appeal his ban as early as today. rice was suspended indefinitely. right now, the nfl is embroiled in a controversy over rice's initial two-game suspension.

roger goodell said that three experts will serve as senior advisers to the league. new jersey is working on changing its own domestic violence laws. that began before the ray rice scandal. nbc 10's cydney long is live tonight in trenton. what's the latest? >> reporter: lawmakers have been talking about this legislation for several months now. they're trying to tackle it in such a way that would give police more power for their victims. they want to be able to help abusers as well so personal violence is not persistent. trenton mother of four francis rogers. >> some try to brush it off. >> reporter: says she'll never forget the abuse she suffered at the hands of her fiance back in 2007. >> he held me down and slapped my face. i had bruises under eye eyes.

>> reporter: rogers didn't realize lawmakers are harder in new jersey now to protect victims with a six-bill package that passed today by unanimous vote at a time when the ray rice domestic violence saga is on the forefront. >> it can happen to anyone. >> reporter: this assemblywoman says what the rice situation is teaching us -- >> it tells you how complicated the issue of domestic violence truly is. it's not something that you can solve overnight. >> reporter: they say no victim should have to testify face-to-face with an abuser. so one of the laws that would change would allow testimony to unfold by means of closed-circuit tv. >> domestic violence affected by home when i was a child. >> reporter: the bills also make mandatory domestic violence counseling for abusers. >> the way to end it is to empower the victims and seek help for the abuser.

>> learning how to control the anger that's inside of them. because anger was taken out on me and i did nothing really. >> reporter: now, the bill would also give theç police authorit statewide to compare any arrest to a database for restraining orders in the state and alert that abused victim of the abuser's empanelled with law enforcement. it goes next to the senate but so far, there's no set date for that vote. live in trenton, i'm cydney long, nbc 10 news. ray rice is not the only nfl star facing allegations of abuse. adrian peterson is charged with child abuse after hitting his child to discipline him. the case has led to a national discussion on corporal punishment. we'll hear from both sides of the debate in just about ten minutes. new at 6:00, a former new jersey teacher is arrested for

allegedly assaulting one of the students at a private prep school. nolan johnson was a theater technology teacher. johnson has been charged with sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child. he's accused of having sex with a 16-year-old girl several times both on and off campus. all that's left after saturday's implosion of the parms in germantown is a pile of rubble. we went back out to the neighborhood to see how things are going two days later there. today, workers continuing to hose down debris as nearby residents check to see if their homes were damaged when the buildings came down. there had been fears that windows or foundations would crack. so far, home owners tell us it all looks good. >> we didn't get dust.

alfred street had a lot of dust. it wasn't as bad as i thought it was going to be. >> you could hear it from miles away. some small problems were immediately fixed. turning now to the weather. a live look outside at boat house row. sunny skies at the feeling of fall. you're about to feel a change. rain is moving in as you see on the nbc 10 first alert radar. it's arriving just in time for the morning commute. let's go to nbc 10 first alert meteorologist sheena parveen. sheena, will the rain causeç problems for drivers? >> i would say just take it slow on the roadways because some of you may run into some ray tomorrow morning. just be careful like you would any other day when we have rain during a busy morning hour, the morning rush for sure. the rain is back off to the west, locally it's nice and dry. the rain is on its way. it won't be here tonight. it will be here mainly tonight, early in the morning. by 9:00 a.m., 65 degrees. rain should start to move out of the area.

by 11:00 tomorrow morning we should see clearing and improvement. right now, though, it is cool, feels like fall outside. upper 60s through parts of the lehigh valley. 71 in philadelphia. 70 degrees through parts of south jersey and delaware. coming up, i'll show you a closer look at the timing of the rain and how cool you'll stay through the rest of the week. >> thanks, sheena. new information in the casino crisis plaguing atlantic city. the auction was approved after a $90 million cash bid from a florida developer was made public last week. an attorney for glenn straub says that parts of the building could be open a couple weeks after the sale. he also said the casino will likely operate in the building at some point. less than 12 hours now, another atlantic city casino will close. trump plaza closes its doors for good tomorrow.

casino operations are scheduled to end just about 6:00. the hotel will close later in the day. the closure will leave about a thousand workers without a job. the trump plaza is the fourth atlantic city casino to shut down this year. the atlantic club was the first to close in january, showboat shut its doors august 31st. two doors later, revel closed and the trump taj mahal could be number five. police are asking for help to track down whoever killed a pregnant woman and her baby yesterday. megan doddo was hit by a stray bullet whileç sitting outside r home. she was eight months pregnant. the baby was delivered but later died. cremated remains have been identified. some belong to people in dover. the state is hoping to locate

new at 6:00, the search is on for a missing woman in south jersey. 61-year-old valley frick was reported missing last night. she was last seen around noon. frick is the director of education at the camden children's garden. they don't know if her disappearance is suspicious. tonight, nfl star adrian peterson is apologizing after being arrested on child abuse charges. the vikings running back says he was disciplining his son by striking the 4-year-old with a switch, a tree branch. peterson released a statement that reads in part, quote, i have to live with the fact that

when i disciplined my son the way i was disciplined as a child i caused him injury that i never intended or thought would happen. i also understand after meeting with a psychologist that there are other alternative ways ofç disciplining a child that may be more appropriate. but deep in my heart i have always believed i could have been one of those kids that was lost in the streets without the discipline instilled in me by my parents and other relatives. meanwhile, the vikings have reinstated peterson after benching him yesterday. the team says it takes allegations of child abuse seriously but peterson is entitled to due process. lu ann cahn, you spoke to an expert about when discipline crosses the line into abuse. >> dr. maria mcculgan says this is something she sees too often in the emergency room of

st. christopher's children's hospital. she wishes she could get every parent to stop spanking their child. >> you should spank your child if he or she deserves it. >> reporter: those who told us that they believe in spanking says they were spanked. >> my mom whipped us, spanked us. it was a belt. >> i got spanked when i did something wrong. i turned out fine. >> imagine how much better you could be if you weren't spanked. >> reporter: dr. maria mcculgan spends a great deal of time to educate parents that this is not the way to go. >> bend over the bed. bend over the bed. >> reporter: this video of a texas judge spanking his daughter went viral in 2011 and there was a public outcry. today, many, even those who believe in spanking are condemning the minnesota viking running back adrian peterson about using a switch on his 4-year-old son.

the injuries were photographed by houston police. >> some people don't deserve to have children. >> it's a fine line between abuse. so in order to not even go towards that line, you shouldn't just do it at all. >> reporter: dr. mcculgan agrees. >> there's studies that it leads ìáhpú poor parent/child interactions and it doesn'tç work. >> reporter: but this parent believes it does work and that unlike peterson, he knows when enough is enough. >> letting him know that you're in charge, they're still kids. >> reporter: listen to this. 32 countries in the world have actually banned all forms of corporal punishment. but in this country, a year ago, a poll showed four in five parents believe in spanking their kids. lu ann cahn, nbc 10 news.

rutgers university is apologizing for a controversial t-shirt. here's a look. some of the shirts worn by fans tailgating before the game, posted on facebook, you can see the fan on the left that said beat ped state. that's a reference to the jerry sandusky scandal that rocked the campus several years ago. julie hermann says i would like to apologize equally to the penn state university fans as well as rutgers fans that were subjected to this classless display. >> now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist sheena parveen. >> well, another fall-like day today. we started off with cool temperatures this morning. here's a live look out at the ben franklin bridge where we have nice, dry conditions.

tomorrow morning we'll see big changes, showers will be moving across the area. temperatures will still be on the cool side, just not as cool as this morning. the cool weather does stay in the forecast after the rain, we're talking still 70 degree high temperatures, as we go through the week. dry stretch of weather, too. this will come after the rain. it will be cooler and drier for the rest of the week, too. the lehigh valley, 71 philadelphia, through south jersey and delaware. temperatures around 70 degrees, closer to shore we're getting more into the mid-70s. we are nice and dry. back off to the west, we're watching an area of moisture. this will be moving in early tomorrow morning. some of you will be dealing with the rain. here's a live look near the schuylkill river near the art museum. you're seeing thin clouds starting to move in. future weather does keep us dry as it brings the clouds in tonight. we don't expect rain tonight. early tomorrow morning between

:00 and 9:00 a.m., we see the rain moving through. by 7:00, this could be one of our better hours of rain coverage. if you don't leave as early as 7:00, you may not run into rain. by 9:00, 10:00 it's moving out of the area. into thia of noon, more clearing. for tonight, clearing, 53 north and west. more clouds overnight. then tomorrow we'll see the early rain. part of your morning commute we may be dealing with the showers. 73 to 76 degrees for the high as we go through the afternoon. and also through the afternoon we'll seek gradual clearing. more sunshine building in after the rain and with the pretty good conditions through the later half of the day tomorrow. as we go into wednesday, thursday, friday, a nice stretch of dry weather that i mentioned high temperatures will be in just about the mid-to-low 70s. the average high 78 degrees. we'll be below that, starting off the week, 77, nice and sunny on sunday around 80 degrees. a few more clouds move in.
